Coastal Carolina In Trouble...???
Coastal Carolina reported violations regarding its men's basketball team to the NCAA.
A statement from the university said the allegations were brought to the school's attention before the season began and President David DeCenzo ordered them turned over to the NCAA.
The New York Times reported the focus of the NCAA's investigation is possible illegal benefits that former player Marcus Macellari said were given to other players. Macellari spoke to NCAA officials and let them know he thinks he was booted off the team because head coach Cliff Ellis over-recruited...
Coastal Carolina's leading scorer, Desmond Holloway, was indefinitely suspended this month while the NCAA looked into his eligibility. The Chanticleers (25-4) close their Big South Conference regular season at Charleston Southern on Saturday.
The Pete Thamel piece in the Times outlines how the 'Cleers now only have seven scholarship players on their active roster and eight players dressed out for recent games. Two other players are ineligible, their star player was kicked off the team after a fight, and their starting guard is injured.
From Thamel:
“I told her (the NCAA interviewer)) that my scholarship wouldn’t have been revoked if these players hadn’t been bribed to come here and offered unfair things,” he said. “These players were bribed to come here to take my spot.”
Macellari said he told the N.C.A.A. that Holloway got a “care package full of stuff” that included clothing. If true, that would be a serious N.C.A.A. violation.

The university response today was:
“Coastal Carolina University is and has been fully cooperating with the NCAA in its current inquiry. Allegations were brought to the University’s attention in late summer of 2010. At that time, President David DeCenzo immediately directed Chief Operating Officer Edgar Dyer and University Counsel Tim Meacham to self report the allegations to the NCAA on behalf of the University.
NCAA’s rules of ethical conduct prohibit anyone at Coastal Carolina University from providing further comment until the inquiry is completed."

OSG Buzzer Beater: Dickey's Steal & Trey Gives UNC Asheville Win Over Coastal Carolina
UNC-Asheville and Coastal Carolina played a close one Tuesday night in Conway, South Carolina. With the game tied at 58 with 2.8 seconds left in regulation Coastal Carolina had one more shot to win the game, so they thought.

Gardner Webb Defeats Coastal Carolina Ending Nations Longest Winning Streak
Before Tuesday night's game against Gardner Webb, Coastal Carolina had the longest winning streak in Division I men's basketball at 22. The Chanticleers were getting some respect nationally too earning a number of votes in the AP poll but yet to crack the Top 25.
That streak came to an end Tuesday night as GWU escaped Kimbel Arena in Conway, South Carolina with a 59-57 win over Coastal Carolina.

The MAC Gets S- MAC- ed By A Pair Of FCS Schools, Both From The Big South Conference
Yeah I know, it's the Mid-American Conference and some think it's not much above the Football Championship Subdivision but that conference is in the Football Bowl Subdivision and a pair of MAC schools got schooled by a couple of Big South schools.
Gardner-Webb travelled to Akron, Ohio and to take on the Akron Zips and took the zip out of tire town. The Runnin' Bulldogs defeated Akron in overtime 38-37.
It was the first time Gardner-Webb had defeated a FBS team.

“Obviously we are very excited as a football team right now,” Gardner-Webb head coach Steve Patton said. “I was most proud of the way our kids did not quit in this game and kept fighting. [The win] was a direct result of those kids playing for 60 minutes. We’ve come close before, down at Georgia Tech [in 2008] comes to mind, so this is a great result for us. We’re showing improvement and playing hard, and that’s all you can ask for.”
The Runnin' Bulldogs were led by their redshirt freshman quarterback Chandler Browning who led the comeback by throwing two touchdowns in the second half to James Perry III.
One hero for Gardner-Webb was senior cornerback Bryce Nixon who blocked the PAT after Akron scored in the first overtime. Then Juanne Blount then scored on a 4- yard run for the Runnin' Bulldogs and Ryan Gates nailed the extra point and Gardner-Webb pulled off the upset.
You know they are celebrating in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
Then it was Liberty's turn to pull off an upset as the Flames scortched Ball State 27-23.
Liberty quarterback Mike Brown threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another in the win for the Flames.
If you keep score of such things, that's five wins by FCS teams this season over FBS teams, three this Saturday.
