At the morning press conference explaining the firing of head football coach Butch Davis a week before practice begins, Dick Baddour has asked Chancellor Holden Thorp to start a search for a successor.
The words Baddour used are "as soon as possible" serving out his contract, but will assume duties other than Athletic Director when a successor is named. Baddour wants to have the new AD start a seamless transition for the recruiting process with a new head football coach...
Interviews are this afternoon for the interim head football coach, but sources are telling OSG Sports that the Offensive Coordinator has the inside track for the sake of the athletes on the roster...

Butch Davis Had To Go
On Monday at the ACC Football Kickoff in Pinehurst, N.C. Butch Davis was answering questions about the past year and a half and accepting the responsibility. It all happened under his watch.
I had a chance to discuss this with Davis Monday and while the 2010 season was the most brutal in his coaching career he admitted that season turned into his most gratifying.
All that is water under the bridge. UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp and the UNC Board of Trustees decided it was time to cut bait and fired Davis Wednesday.
What the powers that be at UNC-Chapel Hill came to the conclusion that the Universities reputation was at stake after taking a major hit during the John Blake affair and tutor-gate and that bad smell would linger if Butch Davis were to remain in charge, so now he's gone.
The general consensus is that Davis may have coached this season but may not have survived following the conclusion of the NCAA investigation.
Keep in mind Butch Davis has never been directly linked to any of the inpropriorties listed in the NCAA report.
All a major university with a high academic standing has to sell to potential students and would be donors is it's reputation and UNC had to rebuild that.
And that meant firing Butch Davis.
North Carolina wanted to get serious about football. For the foreseeable future the Tar Heel football program will face series challenges.

DEVELOPING: Butch Davis fired by UNC
((ht: newsobserver.com))It had to happen this way. Particularly after he took full responsibility for everything just two days ago.
The University of North Carolina fired head football coach Butch Davis today, just before practice for the upcoming season was about to begin next week.
The University spoke in a press conference at length about "Restoring Integrity" and "Moving Forward", which wasn't wrong.
Really the question is just "Why now?"

There's a long list of problems the program has come under fire for over the past two years. Several players were suspended for the entire 2010 season for alleged improprieties and the list of problems continues to grow.
We suspect this was the first move to show the NCAA that administrators at the school are still in control, but again, the question is, "Why now...?" There's been nothing new since the Michael McAdoo incident...and that was a few weeks ago.
No word on an interim replacement for Davis, but the school is going to have a lot of work ahead to try and restore its reputation and live through what happened over the past few years.

University of North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp announced this evening that Butch Davis has been dismissed as head coach of the Carolina football program.
Davis was informed by Thorp and Director of Athletics Dick Baddour of the decision.
“To restore confidence in the University of North Carolina and our football program, it’s time to make a change,” said Thorp. “What started as a purely athletic issue has begun to chip away at this University’s reputation. I have been deliberate in my approach to understanding this situation fully, and I have worked to be fair to everyone involved. However, I have lost confidence in our ability to come through this without harming the way people think of this institution. Our academic integrity is paramount and we must work diligently to protect it. The only way to move forward and put this behind us is to make a change.”
Thorp said the decision was not related to any change in the NCAA investigation, but that it was the result of the cumulative damage to the University’s reputation over the past year.
“Athletics and football are an important part of this University, and a successful football program is essential to the overall health of our athletic program,” Thorp continued. “That’s why we have to put this behind us and move forward.” Baddour said, “The last 13 months have been some of the most difficult that anyone associated with the athletic department and football program have dealt with. At this time, a decision has been made to change the leadership of the football program to help the entire University community move forward.
“I want to thank Butch Davis and his family for their four‐plus years of service and dedication to the University and the Chapel Hill community,” continued Baddour. “My staff and I will work with Chancellor Thorp to transition to an interim head coach as soon as possible. It is critical that we do all we can to help our students and other staff members on the football team since preseason training camp begins in just eight days.”

DEVELOPING: UNC Gets NCAA Notice- And It Ain't Good...
And you know that's never good news...
Here's the Notice of Allegations from the folks at the NCAA...
Basically, it says that UNC, through their relationship with former assistant coach John Blake providing false and misleading information to the NCAA enforcement staff and to the institution and for failure to cooperate with the investigation, steered athletes to agent Gary Wichard, and Blake got paid for things he didn't report to UNC that he got paid on.
Tutor Jennifer Wiley refused to provide information to the NCAA enforcement staff and to UNC and provided extra benefits by paying travel and parking expenses and tutored athletes.
There are also allegations of academic fraud against unnamed student-athletes and Wiley, allegations that student-athletes received preferential treatment and accepted impermissible benefits, allegations against a former student-athlete for unethical conduct, and... the ever popular...
"Failure to monitor" Chris Hawkins, the social media activity of the football team in 2010; and possible extra benefits to a student-athlete triggered by agent legislation connected to Hawkins...
That's a lot...
Quoting Chancellor Holden Thorp:
"I deeply regret that Carolina is in this position. We made mistakes, and we have to face that. When the investigation started a year ago, we pledged to cooperate fully with the NCAA, to go where the facts took us, and to face the issues head on. Our level of cooperation is evident in the allegations, some of which arise from facts that we self-reported to the NCAA. We will emerge with a stronger athletics program, and we will restore confidence in Carolina football."
Quoting AD Dick Baddour:
"We are disappointed to be in this position because it goes against everything we believe in, but we are thankful to get to the next step in the process. These are the issues that we have been dealing with since last summer. We will gather the information the NCAA has requested and prepare to address the notice with the NCAA in the fall. UNC has 90 days to provide a response to the NCAA Committee on Infractions. The gets to appear before the committee in Indianapolis on October 28th...

Blake, UNC Players Talked In 2009

Surprising no one, really, the release of the University of North Carolina phone records revealed that former assistant coach John Blake was in contact with suspended players Marvin Austin and Cam Thomas during the trip to a California training facility in 2009.
The same cell phone records also indicate:
1) That contact was made among Blake, Butch Davis, and agent Gary Wichard and,
2) Blake contacted Wichard and Austin during the first NCAA visit of the investigation...

Austin said in a March 2011 interview that no one at UNC knew about the trip to California. The trip came under scrutiny during the NCAA investigation into whether players received preferential treatment, benefits or services.
"They had no reason to know," Austin said of the trip at UNC's pro day before the NFL draft on March 31. "I didn't think I had to call the university and say, 'Well, I'm going to California to go train.'"

UNC Prelim Numbers Reveal $13K In Unpaid Tickets

The University of North Carolina has released their preliminary findings in the investigation in and around their football program, and the early numbers show $13,000 in unpaid parking tickets...

The inundation of paperwork requested by a lot of media outlets came on the same day that the state Court of Appeals denied UNC's request to delay the release of those records. This may give us all an idea where the NCAA is heading in their investigation at present...
The News and Observer requested information on:
Charles Brown, Kendric Burney, Bruce Carter, Ryan Houston, Dwight Jones, Donte Paige-Moss, Robert Quinn, Kevin Reddick, Greg Little, Johnny White, Deunta Williams.
But, in return, UNC did not release the names of players listed on the citations, and did not release the citations either. The school maintains there is only one copy of the ticket.

Here is a statement released by UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour:
Oct. 11, 2010 Statement from Dick Baddour, UNC Director of Athletics on today's events:
“It’s a sad day when three young men are no longer able to represent their school based on actions they have taken and decisions they have made contrary to NCAA rules. Unfortunately, they made serious mistakes in judgment in accepting extra benefits and then not being truthful with our staff and NCAA representatives. Now they must forfeit the privilege of playing again for the Tar Heels. Although they are responsible for their actions, they are part of our university and our program and we will support them as they move into the next phases of their lives. I know they love to play the game, but I hope they will learn from their mistakes and lead productive and responsible careers.
As an institution, we must learn from these mistakes and work with the NCAA and others who love the game of football to repair the environment in which they occurred. College football is a wonderful game, but we need to closely examine and address the agent-related problems. The University of North Carolina pledges to do all it can to do that.
I hate that these issues have hurt the University of North Carolina and our fans. We have so much to be proud of as a University. We will learn from this and we will become a better program as a result.”
According the NCAA: Little accepted diamond earrings, travel and other benefits, Quinn took 2 black diamond watches, earrings and more travel. Austin's benefit's were not specified.

This...well....there really isn't anything good that can be said about this. Between this and the John Blake investigation, UNC is in a world of trouble; the only question is--how much?
Already, there have been whispers that Head Coach Butch Davis won't survive this either. He may survive the season, it would be somewhat counterproductive to do anything now, but we wouldn't be surprised if the Tar Heels are looking for a new coach...someone who will have to rebuild a program that is in deep trouble.

Busy Day In Chapel Hill: Searcy Back, Davis Not Resigning

North Carolina safety Da'Norris Searcy has been cleared to return for the game against East Carolina after missing three games while the NCAA is investigating, pretty much, everything going on at UNC...
Searcy started all 13 games last season, but the school has held him out this year until his eligibility was figured out.
Tailback Shaun Draughn was cleared to return against Georgia Tech, while the NCAA announced a six-game suspension for cornerback Kendric Burney and a four-game suspension for safety Deunta Williams last week.
Nine other players still remain in limbo including Marvin Austin and Robert Quinn.
Item 2: Butch Davis says he has no plans to resign considering what's going on...

Back on Thursday, Yahoo!Sports released a story that showed links between sports agent Gary Wichard and former UNC coach John Blake.
The report said that over the past three years six wire transfers were made from Wichard to Blake. Blake also carried a credit card tied to Wichard’s agency, Pro Tect Management.
Attorneys for Blake say their client received loans from Wichard, but there was never an arrangement to direct players to Wichard once they left for the NFL.
Pardon the HQ while it clears it's throat on that one...

UNC SGA To Handle Athlete Tutor Issues

Yeah, this doesn't have any kind of funky smell to it or anything...
UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp told the Board of Trustees Thursday that information on the cases of athletes and their academic tutor shenanigans have been handed over to the student attorney general.
"If they violated honor code," Thorp said, "they go before student court."
Not like the fellow students won't have any kind of rose-colored-glasses approach...
The student justice system gets to review each case and figure out if athletes face charges in the student honor court.
And, if they're found to have wronged the school...??? What then...???
They have to read books or something as punishment...???
The one saving grace is that student-athletes can't play football until they are cleared by the student court even if they have been cleared by the NCAA.
To recap: Twelve players- cornerbacks Charles Brown and Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive ends Michael McAdoo, Robert Quinn and Linwan Euwell, safeties Brian Gupton, Da’Norris Searcy, Jonathan Smith and Deunta Williams and tailback Ryan Houston out of the team's first two contests while the university and NCAA determine their eligibility.
The university announced penalties Wednesday for Burney and Williams- six and four games, respectively, and the two have to pay the amount of their benefit to a charity of their choosing...
Another player believed to be linked to the probe, defensive tackle Marvin Austin, is suspended for a violation of team rules.

Corner Kendric Burney and safety Deunta Williams got the biggest hits...
Burney, who received $1,333 in benefits, must miss six games and make repayment of $575.19 to a charity of his choice. Williams, who received $1,426 in benefits, must miss four games and make repayment of $450.67 to a charity of his choice.
North Carolina AD Dick Baddour says the school plans to appeal the length of the suspensions on behalf of both players.
"While I respect the NCAA process, I believe the penalties to be unduly harsh given the individual circumstances in these cases,” Baddour said.
The two games the players have missed to date will count against their ultimate punishment, the NCAA has said.
Counting against instead of counting for...??? Huge...
In a statement, the university said the violations included trips to California, Atlanta and Las Vegas for Burney and two trips to California for Williams.

OK... So, He's "Joshua" This Week... Tech Over Tar Heels 30-24

Brother Wilkie and I have had this discussion off and on this year...
The HQ has covered Josh Nesbitt since his days at Greene County ((GA)) High School. He's always been a talented athlete who could run out of a spread offense, and has converted himself to a triple-option runner on the Flats.
Since he's older now, he wants to be called "Joshua."
Since he's winning this week, we'll acquiesce...
Nesbitt ran for a touchdown and threw for another to help Georgia Tech beat the North Caarolina 30-24 on Saturday.
Nesbitt ran for the game-tying touchdown late in the third quarter. Orwin Smith and Roddy Jones also scored for Tech to hang on for its 11th win in 13 meetings against the Tar Heels.
"Any time you win, I'm happy. It's hard to win," Johnson said. "People who take winning for granted aren't very smart, because it's hard. I don't know in my three years if we've had any easy wins. They're all hard."

Butch Davis Gets Testy
Especially, when a reporter asks the same question over and over when Davis doesn't want to answer the question asked over and over...
Chris Hawkins, the alleged middleman in the Miami-agent fiasco involving a decent portion of college football players including the University of North Carolina players, is now up on other unrelated charges.
He now faces a felony drug charge from a 2009 arrest during a traffic stop- officially, he is charged with felony trafficking of cocaine and misdemeanor marijuana possession. The former North Carolina and is scheduled to be in court next month.
A Georgia State Patrol report said authorities initially stopped Hawkins for not wearing a seat belt while driving a truck carrying furniture.

Former North Carolina Assistant Coach John Blake Had Sports Agent On Speed Dial
[HT: Raleigh News Observer, Charlotte Observer]More news from agent gate in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Ken Tysiac of the Charlotte Observer and Robbi Pickeral of the Raleigh News Observer did some digging and found that former North Carolina associate head coach John Blake, who resigned Sunday, had many conversations with sports agent Gary Wichard. 61 communications during a two month period.

Marvin Austin, Greg Little, Deunta Williams, Kendric Burney, Bruce Carter and Quan Sturdivant were all making their decision to stay or go pro during that time. This doesn't look real good.
North Carolina head coach Butch Davis said he had no idea about the communications. Tar Heel fans you better hope that's the case.
North Carolina athletic director Dick Baddour did discuss those communications with John Blake but wouldn't go into detail.
Those of us at the OSG HQ feel agent gate and tutor gate at UNC keeps getting uglier.

6 Ineligible, 6 Withheld By UNC For LSU Game
More than a dozen players from the University of North Carolina football team did not board the bus Friday morning as the team was getting ready for their game against LSU in the cow-based kickoff classic in Atlanta.
The university declared six players ineligible for Saturday's game: defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn.
An additional six players won't play while their eligibility is in question: tailback Shaun Draughn, defensive end Linwan Euwell, safety Brian Gupton, tailback Ryan Houston, safety Da’Norris Searcy and safety Jonathan Smith.
InsideCarolina's Greg Barnes said there are three players still in eligibility limbo-linebackers Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter and safety Deunta Williams.

BREAKING: UNC's Austin Suspended Indefinitely

University of North Carolina head coach Butch Davis suspended defensive tackle Marvin Austin indefinitely, according to a statement from the team released Wednesday.
“This decision is not a result of the ongoing NCAA review,” Davis said. “Marvin has violated team rules and has neglected his responsibilities to the team.”

North Carolina Football Going Through Tar Hell
This was suppose to be the season where the North Carolina Tar Heels broke onto the national scene in football. Instead its the beginnings of the season from hell for the Tar Heels.
The whole agent thing involving Marvin Austin, Greg Little and associate head coach John Blake has been ongoing. Now with the NCAA investigating an alleged academic mis-conduct with a tutor that was once employed by head coach Butch Davis the program is teetering on lack of institutional control. That's not a good thing with the NCAA.
Who is going to suit up in the baby blues Saturday at the Georgia Dome against LSU is anyone's guess. We do know T.J. Yates is going to start at quarterback and that's about it.
It would appear with all the disarray in the North Carolina football program that this would bode well for LSU however, Les Miles is the head coach. Need I say more.
"It would be nice to know whose exactly going to play so we can kind of get past it and move on." Tar Heel quarterback T.J. Yates said during UNC's weekly media availability. "I know this team is ready whoever is going out on that field is going to go play."
Make so mistake the University of North Carolina is embarrassed by the who investigation. It's one thing for a player to have improper contact with a sports agent, that's out of control of the university unless their is a connection with a member of the coaching staff. The NCAA seems to be on that.
It's another to mess with a universities academic reputation which UNC cherishes.
Does this make Butch Davis' job status shaky? I don't know, Davis got a vote of confidence from his athletic director Dick Baddour and let's see if that has any value or not.

UNC Self-Reports Academic Infraction To NCAA
The University of North Carolina self-reported academic infractions involving current football players and a former tutor to the NCAA, school officials said Thursday.
A report is claiming that the tutor is head coach Butch Davis' former nanny. Officials on campus say the tutor is no longer employed with the school. And this is separate from the current NCAA investigation involving eligibility due to possible contact with sports agents.

Butch Davis did confirm that the tutor in question was hired by his family to tutor his son. During the press conference, UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp gave Davis and AD Dick Baddour his vote of confidence.

Butch Davis Surprised By NCAA Visit

North Carolina coach Butch Davis says the NCAA probe into potential rule violations in his football program came "out of left field."
Davis said Thursday the school is cooperating with the NCAA and that his program follows its rules.
Senior defensive tackle Marvin Austin and senior receiver Greg Little are the focus of the probe, although others were apparently questioned in Chapel Hill about a week ago when the investigators hit campus.
Here's his first round of comments on the issue, outside in a hallway...
The interview took place at a preseason North Carolina-centric football luncheon that was also attended by Duke coach David Cutcliffe, East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill, North Carolina Central coach Mose Rison and North Carolina State coach Tom O'Brien.
Davis, obviously, can't comment on the NCAA probe directly, but he danced around it as best he presently could. The Secretary of State's office in North Carolina has even gone as far as launching their own investigation into agents as a result.

TWTW: Pitt Feeling Butch, Beats UNC In Charlotte

Pitt's Dion Lewis rushed for 159 yards and a TD to bump Tony Dorsett in the Panthers record books for freshman yardage and Dan Hutchins kicked a 33-yard field goal with 52 seconds left, giving 17th-ranked Pitt a 19-17 victory over North Carolina in the Car Care Bowl.
Winning 10 games for the first time since the Marino era in 1981, Pitt finishes their year at 10-3.
"It's back," Lewis said of Pitt football. "We're not satisfied with just 10 wins. We want to get more next year."
Lewis was only recruited by three schools coming out of high school- Miami of Ohio, Tulane, and Pitt. Head Coach Dave Wannstedt, as legend has it, watched four plays of Lewis on TV and offered Lewis a full ride on the spot.
Nice going for the rest of Division One...

Nope... they actually held on to beat North Carolina 28-27 Saturday.
“This is the hardest year I’ve ever been through,” NC State Head Coach Tom O’Brien said. “Your best football player on defense [linebacker Nate Irving] almost kills himself in the summer. You end the year with your offensive coordinator with cancer. We played with a walk-on corner the whole second half.”
O’Brien said his team was “like a MASH unit out there.”
“It’s a disaster right now,” he said. “Thank God it’s over. I don’t think we could play in a bowl if we wanted to.”
The Tarheels finish up at 8-4 and could, now, be going anywhere for a bowl...
O'Brien gets his wish and gets to stay home for the holidays...
From all impressions, this was the most excited Lieutenant Bogumil has been all year long...
Those of us at OSG HQ send our thoughts and prayers to Dana Bible and the whole Wolfpack family as they go through this together...
