A federal agency says it had just one ranger patrolling a 50-mile off-road race where one of the participating vehicles killed eight spectators that were watching too close to the Mojave Desert course.
The Bureau of Land Management said that the ranger was patrolling the course in an off-road vehicle area when a spectator flagged him down to report the crash.
BLM also says the race organizer itself was responsible for the safety of the spectators, but the incident raises questions about the agency's oversight of such events on their property.
The agency would not say how many rangers would be on hand for events like, but the BLM had eight employees staff a motorcycle race in the same area last weekend.

BREAKING: Permits Suspended For Off-Road Promoter
The Federal Bureau of Land Management has suspended future event permits for the promoter of last weekend's off-road race in the California desert where eight spectators were killed by a racing truck.
BLM said Thursday the suspension of any MDR Productions permits will remain in effect while an investigation of the accident is under way.
Eight spectators were killed Saturday night during the California 200 off-road race in the Mojave Desert northeast of Los Angeles. Ten other spectators were injured.
Video of the accident showed spectators gathered along the edge of the narrow dirt course as trucks sped past. One truck went out of control and overturned in the crowd.

8 Killed In Off-Road Race In California
At least eight people were killed and a dozen injured in a desert off-road race in a rural part of San Bernardino County in east Los Angeles Saturday night..
Local county fire departments sent seven ambulances and 10 air ships to the scene of the accident at the California 200 race in the Lucerne Valley area.
Authorities said a dozen people were airlifted to hospitals in the area. According to published reports, winesses saw a pickup ((pictured, thanks Kris Reilly/Victorville Daily Press)) hit people who were sitting on rocks
Amateur video on the internet of last year's race shows off-road vehicles performing stunts close to spectators with only plastic netting between them.

"There was dust everywhere, people screaming, people running," David Conklin, a photographer covering the event for off-road magazines, told The Associated Press. "When I got up to the vehicle I could tell that several people were trapped. There were just bodies everywhere," he said. "One woman with a major head wound [was] lying in a pool of blood. Someone else was crushed beneath the car."
