No Cable Charges In Oakland

Napa County District Attorney Gary Lieberstein said late Thursday he is not filing charges against the Oakland Raiders' coach for allegedly assaulting one of his assistants.

Randy Hanson says Raiders Head Coach Tom Cable attacked him back in August during a coach meeting at a Napa hotel.

Cable has been in legal limbo ever since.

Cable has not commented on the matter, even though reporters have dogged him with questions almost every day since Aug. 6. The one exception was this past Monday when no reporters brought it up at Cable's weekly post-game news conference. Apparently members of the media were still a little shell-shocked from the Raiders surprising victory against the Eagles.

"Lock-step corroboration of Hanson's story by three witnesses having no natural incentive to corroborate Hanson's version would have and should have triggered a much quicker decision on whether to charge Cable with assault," says ProFootballTalk writer Mike Florio, an attorney himself.

This does not mean Cable's troubles are over.
Hanson will likely file a civil lawsuit.

In typical Raiders fashion, coach Tom Cable simply said: "It's an internal issue that we are dealing with and that's all I'm going to say."

If you asked some other folks with knowledge of the incident, they'd tell you that it was Cable who clocked defensive assistant Randy Hanson earlier this month, a punch that sent him to the hospital.

If Cable did indeed land the blow that broke Hanson's jaw, he wasn't saying when meeting with reporters after practice today in Napa.

"Yeah, I can address it," Cable said. Asked if he was involved in the Aug. 5 incident, Cable repeated his previous quote verbatim. Asked a third time over the loud objections of a team official, Cable said, "I'm not going to comment on that. No comment."

Asked if Hanson was still employed with the team, Cable said, "I'm not going to comment on that."

Tom Cable Channels Buddy Ryan

Oakland Raiders head coach Tom Cable punched one of his assistants on Aug. 5 at the team's training camp headquarters in Napa, Calif., several media outlets reported on Monday.

The Web site National Football Post first reported that defensive assistant Randy Hanson was punched in the jaw by another member of the Raiders staff. Unidentified sources later told Fanhouse.com that Cable hit the third-year assistant.

Hanson reportedly did not want to pursue the matter, but staff at Queen of the Valley Hospital alerted authorities, according to Fanhouse.com.

"The victim didn't even want any police action taken," Napa Police Lt. Brian McGovern told the Web site, "but we were following hospital policy that authorities be contacted in cases where there may have been an assault."

Hanson suffered a fractured jaw. McGovern said, according to the Web site, that the Napa Police consider the matter closed "unless we are re-contacted by the victim, and the victim changes their mind that they want us to follow through and pursue an investigation. At this point we're not doing anything else with it."

McGovern said the police report has not been made public over privacy concerns.

Cable had a regularly scheduled meeting with the media scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday.
