DEVELOPING: USD Coach, Players Indicted On Point-Shaving Scheme

A former University of San Diego assistant basketball coach and two former players, including the school's all-time leader in scoring and assists, are among 10 indicted in an alleged conspiracy to affect how USD games wrapped up.

A federal grand jury indicted former assistant coach Thaddeus Brown who coached at USD during the 2006-07 season, former players Brandon Johnson and Brandon Dowdy, and seven others.

The indictment alleges that Johnson took a bribe to swing a game one way in February of 2010 and tried to fix another game in January 2011.

Federal investigators called the work "Operation Hook Shot," and it evolved from a probe the FBI began a year ago into a marijuana distribution operation.

The 10 charged are accused of conspiracy to commit sports bribery, conduct an illegal gambling business and to distribute marijuana. If convicted, they each face up to five years in prison and $250,000 fines.

Nine of the 10 were arrested in the sting. One person remains at large.

Garrett Weber's RBI single in the 22nd inning gave Fresno State a 3-2 victory over San Diego in a game that lasted 7 hours and 12 minutes. It tied for the third-longest in NCAA Division I history.

Fresno State (17-2) tied it at 2 in the bottom of the ninth on a Brennan Gowens' two-run double.

Danny Muno hit a leadoff single for the Bulldogs, stole second and scored on Weber's single to left with two outs to beat San Diego (4-16) and end the game after 7 hours, 12 minutes.

The teams tied Baylor-Houston from 1999 and Colorado-Nebraska back in 1974 for the third-longest game. The Division I record was set in 2009, when Texas beat Boston College 3-2 in 25 innings in an NCAA regional game.

Team That Could Surprise - San Diego

All 5 starters return from a team that upset Gonzaga in the WCC Tournament Final and Connecticut in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Toreros have been in the heat of battles over the years and while they might not overtake Gonzaga, San Diego could be the runner up and sneak in the NCAA's again. One thing is for sure in Gonzaga's perspective, San Diego won't be fun to play against.

3 new coaches join the WCC. Bill Bayno takes over at Loyola Marymount, Tom Asbury returns for another tour of duty at Pepperdine and Rex Walters is the new head coach at San Francisco. Walters has some talent to work with but will have to change the Dons reputation of not playing as a team.
