Cook High football player Roy White III ((pictured, thanks Pat Gallagher/VDT)) died Monday afternoon at Hornets’ football practice.
The 16-year-old White was participating in spring practice and according to reports went up for a pass and was hit in the chest.
Cook county coroner Ron Lipsey said EMS and the coaches tried to revive White, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital of Adel at 5:55 p.m.
Lipsey said it not known yet if White’s death had anything to do with the hit or if it was heat stroke or something else.
Lipsey said his body has been sent to Atlanta for an autopsy.
Former Cook head coach Jim Scroggins said he was told that White was tackled on the field, got up and fell down. Scroggins said he was told that an ambulance was called immediately, but efforts to revive White were unsuccessful.
“Losing a youngster is one the saddest things that can happen,” Scroggins said. “He was one of the nicest young men ever. He was very intelligent. There was no doubt he would have gone to college and played ball there. He has a wonderful family, and it’s sad for them and the community. He was going to be a star.”
Added Lipsey, “This isn’t the kind of thing you think about happening here; you think it can only happen somewhere else.”
