Mountain West Conference Has New Logo.

The Mountain West Conference has a new logo. It's on the upper right of this column. This is what Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson said of the new design.

"This initiative is emblematic of the evolution of our league," Thompson stated in a Mountain West Conference release. "The overwhelming majority of the people we spoke to said the Mountain West is bold, feisty and highly competitive, and we strongly believe these qualities are reflected in our new brand identity and our new logo."

When I see that block "MW" I think bold and feisty. In fact the Mountain West has to be the first conference to give it's logo a nickname. It's know as "The Rock."

Here's a portion of the release from the Mountain West Conference.

The unique logo itself is a strong symbol of a league on the rise, invoking comparisons to stately campus buildings and the Rock of Gibraltar. It is unlike any other conference mark. Reflecting the expanded membership from the mountains to the ocean and addressing the previous prevalence of mountain imagery and word marks, the letters representing 'Mountain' and 'West' are given equal weight and dimension.

Don't you love explanations of a logo.

Those of us at the OSG HQ think the new logo looks a lot like the old MTV news logo. Either that or the new "Doctor Who" logo from the show that runs on BBC America...

Mountain West leaves Boise State hanging....

Well, we know one conference that isn't expanding at this moment. That would be the Mountain West who, many had speculated would try to woo Boise State away from the WAC.

The Mountain West Commissioner, Craig Thompson, announced today that "The board did not make a decision to expand at the present time".

We aren't sure what this means to well...pretty much anyone. The only thing we can figure is they want to sit things out and see what the "BCS Boys" do and then cherry pick the remains.

Really, it doesn't hurt Boise State either way. Their national profile has never been stronger. They can afford to wait things out and see if anyone want to take the proverbial "Cinderella to the Ball".

Boise State Thinking Mountain West Move...?

((HT: KTVB-TV Boise))

Or the Mountain West is thinking of adding Boise from the Western Athletic Conference- take your pick on how to look at this one... as they are in Jackson Hole, Wyoming through the weekend...

Brian Murphy at the Idaho Statesman looks at the tea leaves currently being brewed at the Mountain West Conference meetings.

"If you're going to explore conference membership changes, you have to look at what brings significant value," Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson said. "When we added TCU, we did it for one reason, to strengthen the league. . . . If it strengthens the league, expands your television markets and enhances scheduling opportunities, you must do your due diligence and be proactive in preparing for the future."

Ferd Lewis of the Honolulu Advertiser is looking at Boise to the Mountain if others skip out on the conference when all hell breaks loose...

The kicker: Boise State would have to give notice to the WAC by July 1 if it intends to leave for the 2011 football season.

So there...

The Sports Department at Channel 7 thinks about the move...

Your Tax Dollars At Work: A BCS Hearing

With all the other stuff going on where your tax dollars are being sent so the gub'ment can spend money without your okey-dokey, guess what they're spending it on now...?

A committee meeting on the BCS...

Like there isn't anything else important going on...
Unfortunately, it had to be covered. When your Congress calls, you have to show.
But look at it this way...those of you that don't like the BCS as it stands today will agree with Congressman Barton- "it's like Comma-nism..."

No, none of us can get our money back on this one, either.

((HT: Deseret News/Lee Davidson))

Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, told big colleges and football bowl executives that their sworn testimony before Congress on Friday finally and truthfully made clear why they oppose a playoff system, and why teams like the undefeated University of Utah were excluded from last year's Bowl Championship Series championship game.

"It's about money," he said. "It's not about athleticism on the field."
Then he gave the BCS some advise: "You should either change your name to BES, for Bowl Exhibition System, or just drop the 'C' and call it the BS system. It's not about determining the championship on the field."

Barton is sponsoring a bill that would prohibit calling any game a football national championship if it is not determined by a playoff system. "It's about truth in advertising," he said. About the current BCS, he said it is a bit "like communism. You can't fix it…. Sooner or later, you're going to have to try a new model."
Bobby Rush, D-Ill., chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, seconded the assertion and said, "It seems to me we have a championship series that is not really a championship series. It is a misnomer."

There's more to the piece, but those of us at OSG HQ got physically ill.
Barton is just hot about the Big 12 schools getting jobbed in the process. We imagine Senator Hatch of Utah is just as hot, and just as full of hot air.

There's a simple solution to all of this... vote them all out and start over.
Oh, you thought we had a solution for the BCS...?
Nah, it's flawed.

And when was the last time you saw a conservatively-ideological Congressman chapped about the free-enterprise system...?
Dig in to it more here at C-SPAN, if you're trying to stay awake...
