Broseph's Bits And The Weekend Gospel
It's Super Bowl Sunday coming up and the fun part of this day for those of us who don't have a team playing is wagering on it. It is rare that the Big Game is this close. I've gone back and forth on both the spread and total making a case for all four things happening. I'm jaded by the fact that the Eagles should have beaten Green Bay, but I'm also angry that Pittsburgh (the lesser part of PA) could win another Super Bowl. I've envisioned a shootout as well as a defensive struggle. Because of the fact that I can't seem to make a selection there, I've decided to turn to the props. There are hundreds of wagers to make in this group. In this space, I'm going to give you five to take a chance on and three that I'd like to see made:
Christina Aguilera National Anthem Length... The O/U has been set at 1 minute and 54 seconds. The money is coming in on the over which is a good bet because a lot of these artists like the spotlight. Aguilera did the National Anthem at Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals and it was approximately at 1:54. One would think that she would want to soak up the attention and hold those last few notes just a bit longer. (OVER 1:53)
Both Teams Make 33+ yard FG's... Using the sportsbook BetPhoenix, the yes is at +155. In a few scenarios, one can see the defenses stiffening up a bit more in certain parts of the field. 33 yard FG's are essentially chip shots and these kickers are pretty solid. Mason Crosby is 22-28 this season with a long of 56 yards. Shaun Suisham has been a great acquisition missing only one kick in 15 tries. His long is only 48 yards, but he doesn't need it to be that long. (YES +155)
Team scores 2 unanswered times... Once again using the great sportsbook BetPhoenix, we get this gem of a wager. Most books offer this wager, but it's three straight instead of two. As discussed, this is a very evenly matched Super Bowl. Both teams have potent offenses with defenses that are built to slow each down. With a game like this, wagering the no is actually worth it. There's no reason that you couldn't see a back and forth affair. (NO +3300)
Mentions of Brett Favre during the game... Another favorite sportsbook of mine, Bodog, features this gem. They set the number at 2.5 which seems to be ridiculously low. You do realize that FOX will be all over this angle. We heard this week that Aaron Rodgers specifically mentioned that he did NOT talk to Brett in preparation for Sunday's game. That's at least one mention while past Super Bowl successes for Green Bay will be another topic. It seems almost too easy to not take the over. (OVER 2.5 -160)
Color of Gatorade dumped on winning coach... This one is always intriguing. Clear/Water used to be the selection but it has lost the last two super bowls. Yellow has been the dominant color as of late especially in the Super Bowl and BCS Championship games. Mike Tomlin was not happy after his dousing in the AFC title game so there's a small chance there may not be one at all. This is the type of prop that you can shop around for the best number though. Each book has it's own theories and it's own opinions so if you like a color, then go ahead and find a place to get it at a number you'd like. (YELLOW +150)
Now for props I'd like to see:
Number of people watching Puppy Bowl VII during halftime vs. Number of people watching the New Jersey Nets vs. Indiana Pacers -- I can honestly say there have been Super Bowls where I've turned the game off to watch Animal Planet's "Puppy Bowl." It's especially tough for someone like me who likes dogs yet can't have one in my apartment complex. The channel has promised that they are going to have chickens play cheerleaders which is very intriguing in it's own right. The Nets are averaging 12,856 people for their basketball games. The Pacers aren't exactly a big ticket team either. I think this one's pretty easy. The Nets lose again. (PUPPY BOWL!)
Number of touchdowns from Big Ben vs. Number of douchey comments from LeBron about the Super Bowl on his twitter account -- The Steelers might need Big Ben to throw often as they could struggle to run the ball on the stout Packers defense. BJ Raji, Clay Matthews and AJ Hawk are a part of a unit that has been able to slow down the rushing attack of their opposition. LeBron always seems to have something to say on his twitter account. Karma's a bitch I believe is one of his favorite things to say. He even commented on the Jay Cutler situation which he had ZERO reason to do. LeBron's commentary on everything from basketball to the Yankees to the NFL isn't always on point. I'll take Big Ben's passing TD's as this one may be 2-1. The bigger wager might be if LeBron makes any comments at all on the Super Bowl. (BIG BEN TD'S)
The Highest Scoring NCAAB game or total rushing yards by both teams -- This one is going to be tough as the majority of the games on Sunday feature defensive minded teams. The highest scoring affair figures to be Ohio State/Minnesota, but that total won't exactly be that big. The rest of the games figure to struggle to get 135 to 140 on the point total. The Steelers give up 62.8 yards per game while the Packers allow almost 115 yards per contest. The Steelers offensive line might struggle a bit without Pouncey up front so bring that number down a little. If you think these teams combine for 145 or 150 yards then go the rushing route. If you think that North Carolina/FSU or OSU/Minnesota is going to be a shootout, then play that side.
Hopefully you'll enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday. Spend Saturday trying to figure out how to get out of work on Monday.

UPDATED: Packers fan fired over tie at Chicago car dealership....Really?
![]() |
| John Stone/Courtesy: alex garcia/chicago tribune |
Okay, this is going way too freakin' far. Apparently, a salesman at Webb Chevrolet in the Chicago area lost his job Sunday after showing up for work wearing a Green Bay Packers tie.
Yeah, seriously. Apparently his boss told him talk off the tie or he's fired.
The story from the Chicago Tribune RIGHT HERE
What's worse, the boss who fired him, didn't dispute that why he fired him. He says its because the dealership does promotional work with the Bears.
No, sorry dude, that's a really lame excuse. We all get rivalries in sports and we get that people take their sports seriously, albeit sometimes too seriously. But there is not a legitimate excuse in the world for firing someone for freely speaking.
We hope the salesman, John Stone, gets his redemption on the clowns that run the dealership. If you are firing someone strictly on that basis, you got problems. Last we checked, wearing an opponents tie isn't against the law, it's some little bitty thing called...oh...FREEDOM OF SPEECH!
Apparently someone in Chicago does have a heart, and after hearing about Stone's plight, has already offered him a job.

Let the hype begin: Your first Superbowl preview of the year
![]() |
| The Lombardi Trophy/Courtesy: coacheshotseat.com |
Though none of our personal favorite teams are in this game, we kind of like this matchup. To quote the legendary Jim Ross "It's gonna be a Slobberknocker". Two really physical teams with two really good quarterbacks.
Though on a personal level, we feel Ben Roethlisberger is a total and complete dirt bag, he's a really good football player. Aaron Rodgers, well, he's been out of his mind most of the season and in particular in the playoffs.
However, this game will come down to defense. The Dick LeBeau coached Steeler D is legendary. Troy Polamalu, James Harrison and company will bring it. But Green Bay in their Defensive Coach Dom Capers is pretty good too.
We won't make a score prediction this early, but at least right now, we'll take Green Bay, but not by much. It may be one of the lower scoring Super Bowls we'll ever see.
Here's your game preview from JB and the boys at CBS Sports:

DEVELOPING: Packers Advance To Dallas With Win Over Bears
It took a little while but the Green Bay Packers are heading to another Roman Numeral Classic- and some guy named Favre has nothing to do with it at quarterback...
Thank goodness...
Aaron Rodgers ran for a score, threw for 244 yards, and saved a score from happening with a shoestring lunge at Brian Urlacher and the Packers win in Chicago 21-14 over the Bears.
Bears starting QB Jay Cutler only lasted into the third quarter with a knee injury. Todd Collins saw some duty- going 0-for-2- before Bears OC Mike Martz had to talk into the ear of third-year player Caleb Hanie from...???
Anyone...???
Colorado State...
Coming into the game, Hanie was 5-for-7 for 55 yards passing on the season...
Here's BJ Raji's pick and return for score against Hanie to make the game 21-7 before Hanie threw for a score of his own... to a teammate...
((HT: NFL on FOX/Youtube))
"It's a dream come true," Rodgers said after the game. "It's an incredible feeling. I'm at a loss for words."
Trent Dilfer and Merril Hoge analyze...

NFL Playoffs: Packers, Rodgers Shoot Down The Falcons
Pardon Atlanta Falcons fans if they have visions of 30 years ago. The 1980 Falcons had the best record in the NFL heading into the playoffs but had nothing to show for it. Danny White led the Dallas Cowboys to a come-from-behind win in the Divisional Playoff. Do you remember? This will help. Vin Scully and George Allen were in the booth for CBS Sports. (Thanks Youtube.com)
30 years later the Falcons had the best record in the NFC, home field advantage throughout the playoffs and will have nothing to show for it.
The Green Bay Packers destroyed the Falcons 48-21, or should I say Aaron Rodgers did it.

The Packers quarterback could do nothing wrong. Aaron Rodger went 31-of-36 passes (86.1 percent) for 366 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions for a 136.8 passer rating. On third down Rodgers was off the charts going 10-for-10 on third down for 151 yards, with eight of those throws going for first downs as the Packers finished the night 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) on third down.
How many times did Rodgers' legs help avoid blitzing Falcon defenders?
"Aaron Rodgers was excellent today." Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. "His ability to play a run/pass mix, especially in the first three quarters, was impressive. In or outside the pocket, he was on fire."
"I just got into a rhythm not only throwing the football but moving around in the pocket." Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "It’s just a special night.”
Here's the highlights from the Georgia Dome. (Thanks Youtube.com/Fox Sports)

Your Wild Card Weekend Wrapup
We know who won't be moving on to the Super Bowl now. Sunday's games didn't really produce any surprises like Saturday did. Two teams are now done for the year.
One, the Phildelphia Eagles. They got beat. At home. By the Green Bay Packers, in a really good, old fashioned slobberknocker. Though it took at Tramon Williams interception of a Michael Vick pass in the end zone with 33 seconds left in the game to secure the win.
Your newspaper wrapup, from Packersnews.com (Part of the Green Bay Press-Gazette) RIGHT HERE
Next up for the Pack. A trip to a currently snowbound Atlanta and a date with the top seeded Atlanta Falcons. The two teams played just a few weeks ago, with the Falcons winning a nail-biter 20-17 at the Georgia Dome. Kickoff is set for Saturday night at 8.
How the Packers beat the Eagles, Courtesy of some guy on YouTube doing his own sportscast. This video may not last very long so watch it while you can.
As for the AFC game....the Ravens did what seemingly always do, win their 1st Playoff game on the road. They squared off with the upstart Kansas City Chiefs, in KC, and took care of business. 30-7, a relatively easy win for them.
The game story from the Baltimore Sun RIGHT HERE
It was an emotional day for the Ravens and safety Ed Reed. Reed's brother had gone missing the day before after supposedly jumping in the Mississippi river. His brother has yet to be found.
More about that from the Sun RIGHT HERE
The Ravens will square off Saturday afternoon with their arch rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Here are your Ravens/Chiefs highlights, from the same guy. Let's see if they'll stay here...

Dan Connolly almost breaks one...
This, was pretty funny. You just don't see offensive lineman break long runs...pretty much ever. But yet in Sunday nights Packers/Patriots game, that's exactly what happens.
Here's your set up. The Packers have just scored and are about to kick off to the Patriots, the kicker, Mason Crosby hits a grounder that is scooped up by wedge blocker/guard Dan Connelly. Connelly proceeds to bust out of the pack and go 71 yards before he's finally tackled.
Yeah, it's pretty funny...and slow, but hey, it's a big return and as Chris Collinsworth said, probably a career highlight.
Here's your video before it gets pulled.

Cards Take Wild Pay Tackle Football Game
((HT: KTVK-TV Phoenix))
In, without a doubt, one of the wildest games in modern NFL his-to-ree Karlos Dansby showed the hometown Arizona Cardinals fans that defense only needed to show up when it needed to...
On the first drive of overtime...
Because, as we all know, the team that wins the coin toss always wins in overtime, right...???
The Cards had a 17-0 lead early, and a 24-10 lead at the break. But the Green Bay Packers, behind a ridiculous afternoon by QB Aaron Rodgers, tied the game at 31, 38, and 45...
Normally dependable Cards kicker Neil Rackers pull-hooked a field goal attempt as time expired in regulation which sent the game into free football mode...
The rest was up to Dansby...

Here's your tailgating package from our friends at AZfamily.com and Channel 3...

More Proof Favre Is Coming Back
Brett Favre hasn't signed with the Minnesota Vikings yet but the question seems to be when rather that if.It seems Favre's family is making their travel plans for the upcoming 2009 NFL season including booking some hotel rooms November 1st in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Favre clan isn't coming into Green Bay for the Packers to honor #4. That date just happens to be when the Vikings play the Packers at Lambeau Field.
According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette about 2 months ago Favre's family and friends had booked 25 to 30 rooms at the Midway Motor Lodge (pictured) near Lambeau Field for the weekend of the Nov. 1 Vikings game at Green Bay.
OSG contacted hotel manager Doug Warpinski who had no comment.
Warpinski told the Green Bay Press-Gazette “They called and said if he goes to Minnesota they definitely want to be at the game,” and added that Favre's family normally stay at that hotel when he played for the Packers. By the way, they can cancel up to 45 days of the reservation without a financial penalty.

Favre Meets with Childress, does anyone care?

Ok, we held off reporting this, mostly due to our aversion to the name Brett Favre. That and the fact that every year for the past 5, he's threatened to retire and eventually after much hoopla (mostly the 4-letter word), he came back.
The story from a gushing Minneapolis Star-Tribune here
Now it seems as though he's doing it again. And as you would expect, it's all over the 4-Letter word (ESPN) and been going in other media...including smart-ass bloggers like us, too. This time though, it's been a little different. Aside from the folks in Minneapolis, who obviously don't realize that they are getting football's version of Sergio Garcia, and the folks in Bristol; pretty much everyone else is taking shots at Favre. And they should. Sometime in the past few years it became evident that the guy is strictly a self-centered, whiny bitch. He or at least those close to him (they tell him he's great a lot), are even admitting that he just wants to go into Lambeau Field in another jersey and beat the Packers. Or more specifically to embarrass the G.M and coaches who decided that they no longer wanted to deal with his wishy, washy ways.
Well dude, that really isn't a good reason to pretty much ruin what little is left of your credibility. Rather than rehash the same long-winded reasons as to why this is an idiotic idea and explain why we should see Favre for what he is rather than what the 4-Letter word makes him out to be, we will just link you to some stories from other people who are beginning to see the light when it comes to one...well...just read some of this.
Read SI.com's Don Banks here
Or this from the New Jersey Star-Ledger's Dave Hutchinson here
Or this from Yahoo Sports right here
The point we are trying to make is this. Everyone in Minnesota and in Bristol, Connecticut will be going gaga over this story. All the Favre fans will come out from under their rocks and proclaim "Brett is great, he's doing this for his fans, he loves football". No...maybe he loved football at some point in time, but now, more than ever, it is plainly obvious, he doesn't love anyone...other than himself.

Are The Packers Desparate At QB? Greg Paulus Works Out For The Pack
You remember Greg Paulus. The fiery little reserve point guard for the Duke Blue Devils who got under the skin of the Duke haters. Well Paulus didn't play a down of college football yet he worked out for the Green Bay Packers last week on the Duke campus.ProFootballTalk.com reported and a Duke spokesman confirmed that Paulus worked out for a Packers scout. He threw passes to All-ACC receiver Eron Riley who could go in the late rounds of the NFL draft.
Seriously Paulus has football skills in fact he has quarterback skills. As a high school senior Paulus was ranked by Scout.com as the 9th best quarterback in 2004 and was ranked ahead of Colt McCoy from Texas and Chase Daniel of Missouri.
Paulus could have played quarterback at Notre Dame or Miami but chose to play basketball at Duke.
The last time Paulus took a snap at quarterback was at the 2004 U.S. Army All-American game for which he started.
If the Packers do not draft or sign Paulus he does have a year of eligibility for football. It's doubtful he would suit up for David Cutcliff because Thaddius Lewis returns for his senior year as a 3-year starter and Sean Renfree, Lewis' back-up, was a top QB prospect Duke landed.
So the only option is for Paulus to go the Division II route and give it a go.
Those of us at the OSG HQ can't help but think is the NFL that desperate to find quarterback prospects that a back up point guard from the ACC that hasn't played the position in 4 years really on the radar screen.

UPDATE: Midnight EST Wednesday
((HT: WRAL-TV))
Foxsports.com is reporting that sources close to the situation place Paulus in Ann Arbor talking with Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez about the possibility of suiting up for the Wolverines in 2009.
Paulus has one year of football eligibility and doesn't have to sit a year because it is a different sport.

Favre Didn't Really Want To Go
Apparently, if you're Number Four in Gang Green, the answer is not the AFC despite the smiles shown in the press conference photo from Cleveland ((thanks Antonelli/NY Daily News))...
According to the guy who flew Brett Favre around in his recent round-trips to Green Bay from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Four had some misgivings about his new home...
Grant Goetsch, the Vice President of Wisconsin Aviation, had both hands on the wheel and one ear in the cabin as the Flock du Favre went back and forth. But then he was interviewed by Adam Tobias of the Watertown (WI) Daily Times when it was all over.
“He and his agent were continually working I'm sure all night talking on and off with the different teams,” Goetsch added. “He was aware of both (teams), but the comment was made that he wasn't as interested in the Jets."
We also got to find out that Favre likes to do crossword puzzles on those flights back and forth from Goetsch... never would have guessed.
Enjoy the 21st-Century equivalent of Namath as a Ram and Unitas as a Charger Jets Fan...the saga moves to Gotham...

The Circus Moves To New York
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports believes that the compensation is a single draft pick. The value of that pick will depend on Favre's output in New Jersey.
SI.com's Peter King reported earlier on Wednesday evening that the Jets offered a solid third-round pick that could bump to a first-round pick depending on how well the Jets and Favre play this year.
The NFL Network reports the dynamics of the draft pick to be this convoluted formula:
It's currently a fourth-round pick.
If Favre plays 50-percent of the snaps on offense, the pick turns in to a 2009 3rd-rounder.
If Favre plays 70-percent of the snaps on offense and the team makes the playoffs, the pick turns in to a 2nd-rounder.
If Favre plays 80-percent of the snaps on offense, and the team makes the Super Bowl, the pick turns in to a 1st-rounder.
There will be a test on this later...
Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy and EVP/GM Ted Thompson sent out a joint statement.
Here's the middle paragraph:
"We respect Brett's decision that he could no longer remain here as a Packer. But there were certain things we were not willing to do because they were not in the best interest of the team. We were not going to release him nor trade him to a team within the division. When Brett ultimately decided that he still wanted to play football, but not in Green Bay, we told him that we would work to find the best solution for all parties involved. We wish Brett and his family well."
The New York Jets version through Randy Lange relaying Chairman/CEO Woody Johnson's thoughts goes a little something like this:
"I am looking forward to seeing Brett Favre in aReaction from Green Bay from the Press-Gazette is hyah
The New York Post reacts hyah
UPDATE: Larry Hardesty, Jets beat reporter of ESPNRadio 1050 in New York City, reports that a decision should be made on Chad Pennington by 4PM Thursday afternoon. A team in the "AFC West" seems to be interested in Pennington... see the Kansas City Chiefs. Hardesty also thinks that Favre will be around for one year, and the Jets after that year, will review the situation.

Another Episode Of The Brett Farve Soap Opera
Brett Favre arrived in Green Bay yesterday to report to training camp. Favre will be officially reinstated on the Packers roster at 1:30pm est today. With Favre in town it seems the Packers attitude is changing. Since the team couldn’t pay Favre to say retired, they now welcome him back. You can read the A.P. story here from the Green Bay Press Gazette.
Now there will be a quarterback competition in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers is ready to fight for the starters job the head coach Mike McCarthy has said is his. Rodgers acknowledges that it’s going to be a dogfight.
Brett Favre has started more games consecutively that any other quarterback in the NFL. To keep that streak alive, he will have to earn it in camp and beat out Rodgers. McCarthy has made ”no promises” to Favre.

Mark Murphy's statement
"Sixteen years after Brett Favre came to the Packers, he is returning for a seventeenth season. He has had a great career with our organization and although we built this year around the assumption that Brett meant what he said about retiring, Brett is coming back. We will welcome him back and turn this situation to our advantage."Frankly, Brett’s change of mind put us in a very difficult spot. We now will revise many actions and assumptions about our long-term future, all predicated on Brett’s decision last March to retire. As a result of his decision, we invested considerably in a new and different future without Brett and we were obviously moving in that direction. That’s why this wasn’t easy. Having crossed the Rubicon once when Brett decided to retire, it’s very difficult to reorient our plans and cross it again in the opposite direction – but we’ll put this to our advantage."Brett will be in camp tomorrow. Although there has been uncertainty regarding Brett’s return, Ted Thompson and Coach McCarthy had previously discussed this and have had a plan in place. Coach McCarthy will talk to the team and the quarterbacks about the plan moving forward, and after he has done that we will share it publicly."No matter what, I look forward to another successful season for the Packers and our fans. This has been a tough situation, but the Packers will make the most of it."

Fun With Favre- A Game We All Can Play...
You know you can track air traffic in and out of both the Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Green Bay, Wisconsin airports...?
FlightAware has some really cool things to look at hyah ((the Hattiesburg airport)) and hyah ((the Green Bay airport))
The picture below is a snapshot from Austin Straubel International Airport from early Friday morning... as you can tell, nothing is going on... and there are no current flights scheduled to arrive from Mississippi...

Just so you know, nothing was going on at Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport, either...
There weren't any flights scheduled to arrive from Green Bay, Wisconsin at the time the snapshot was taken...

Time For Another Episode Of The Brett Favre Soap Opera
The bizarre saga between the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre continues to reach higher levels of the absurd. First Packers President Mark Murphy flies down to Mississippi to reportedly offer Favre $20 million just to go away and stay retired. Now every Packer fan or reporter including some poor production assistant at ESPN is tracking every flight out of Hattiesburg, Mississippi in case Farve shows up at the Frozen Tundra.
More on that Thursday’s Green Bay Press Gazette
Favre’s agent Bus Cook says his client understands he would be walking into a media frenzy but that he is willing to do so and not have retirement forced upon him.
“He’s prepared to deal with it.” Cook told the Associated Press Thursday. “He’s ready to go back, but he can’t go back until the commissioner reinstates him.”
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday that the Packers are so desperate that the team has discussed internally about trading Favre within the NFC North. That would include the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings.
Meanwhile Packer fans seem to want Brett Favre back in the Packer colors. There seems to be a lot of support for Farve according to Lori Nichel’s article in Thursday’s Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
