Gus Alert: Gus Johnson moves to FOX from CBS
![]() |
| Our man Gus/Courtesy: thepenaltyflagblog.com |
Gus Johnson, he of the crazy end of game call, as we reported last week, no longer works for CBS Sports. But, he will be officially announced as part of the FOX Sports team today.
More from the New York Daily News RIGHT HERE
Okay, we are taking deep breaths here. The cult of Gus will continue with him doing NFC games (when/if the NFL resumes) and Pac 12 football. However, most of us east of the Mississippi won't see or don't watch Pac 12 football.
Supposedly, some in the world of CBS Sports were not happy that Gus had rapidly become a huge part of the NCAA Tournament voice. And considering the ego's involved in TV, that doesn't surprise us. Disappoint us, yes, surprise no.
Guess that means we'll get more of the "Golf Whisperer" (Jim Nantz).
Since we won't get basketball Gus anymore, re-live a video we posted awhile back with Gus describing great moments in history. Thanks Funny-or-Die:

Gus Is Out...
((HT: CBS/youtube))
But it's not all bad...
Gus and CBS couldn't agree on a new deal, so they've gone their separate ways...
There's talk he'll end up somewhere very high-profile, sometime very soon...
We always have this...
And this...

The Spanish Gus Johnson!
(ht: chad ford/espn))
This....is awesome. We've talked at length about our infatuation with the end of game calls of Gus Johnson. Gus is one of the most exciting play-by-play guys you'll ever want to listen to.
Well. We found his doppelganger. Or at least his compadre. Check out this Spanish announcer calling a Spanish League game from Saturday. The calls are awesome. Although even with our rudimentary understanding of Spanish, we don't understand a word he says. But we don't need to. The excitement says all that is needed to be said.

The Cult of Gus: And the Tournament Begins
![]() |
| Gus/Courtesy: cbssports.com |
We couldn't pass this story up, because to us...Gus Johnson is "The" voice of the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament, which by the way kicks off today (Tuesday).
The calls are borderline legendary and the hope when a game starts and you find out that he is calling it...that its a close, no, a buzzer beater game. Because when it comes down to it...who's better at calling a buzzer beater than the OSG's favorite play-by-play guy.
Read the profile in the New York Times RIGHT HERE
Here's the most recent Gus favorite call from this years PAC 10 Finals:
Really, does it get any better than that?
We understand the whole thing about Gus not being the #1 announce team guy. He's not for everyone. But really, we'd rather listen to a game with him and Bill Raftery calling the action than any game Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg will do for CBS Sports.
But he can't be everywhere. We wish he was. However he's been regulated to doing games in places such as the "Big 10" network.
Here's a great Gus game from the incredible Xavier/Kansas State double OT game in last years (2010) tournament:
As great as Gus is, this might be his craziest call of all. From a Cincinnati Bengals vs. Denver Broncos game in 2009:

The Politics Of Dancing: Wazzu, Alabama State, and Princeton
All the HQ has to say about the end of the Pac-10 title game...???
Cold... blooded...
And you know that means it's just Gus...
((HT: CBSSports/NCAA/youtube))
Douglas Davis' buzzer-beater gives it to Princeton and denies Harvard for the 428th consecutive year from going into the tourney...

Alabama State beat Grambling for the SWAC bid...
Here's some postgame...

Just like a cat, the Jacksonville Jaguars have 9 Lives....With Gus on the Call
This is your Sunday play of the day. The dreaded Hail Mary at the end of the game never works. Does it?
Well, this one did. Here's the situation, 3 seconds to go, Jaguars and Texans tied at 24. Jacksonville has the ball on the 50 and there's one last play.
Without spoiling the moment, look at the video and enjoy the perfect person to call the play....our pal Gus Johnson...Hopefully it won't get pulled.
Thanks BSOUncut and YouTube:

When Strikeforce MMA became the WWE...
Many people regard the MMA sport as a violent version of Professional Wrestling. Heck, the state of New York will not allow them to stage an event there. However, if you follow or pay attention to it, really it is quite controlled and regulated and up until last night, had become quite an honorable sport.
And then this. Saturday night in Nashville, the Strikeforce group, not the most popular MMA group, UFC is, had a post fight issue that basically looked like a battle royal in the WWE.
Check out the video: ((thanks: big lead/you tube))
The melee ensued after the featured bout, which by the way was shown on CBS and coincidentally announced by OSG and internet favorite, Gus Johnson.
That headline bout, where Jake Shields beat Dan Henderson, was supposed to be the end to the program. However, CBS had some time to fill, so Gus went into the ring to get an interview with Shields. That's when fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller went WWE. He bounced into the ring and interrupted the interview. Other fighters saw this and didn't like it and that's when the mayhem ensued. Though strangely, other than a brief attempt at stopping the craziness, Gus didn't have much to say.
Read more from Yahoo Sports RIGHT HERE
Needless to say, it was both a humorous and scary attempt at theatrics. It begs the question of whether it was a planned set-up or it was just a coincidence. Either way it was interesting and undoubtedly it will draw a little more attention to sport...and a promoter in need of it.

Calling Gus Johnson Fans!

For any of you who enjoy your college hoops, you've certainly heard CBS's Gus Johnson call a game. Perhaps nobody in Sports Announcing is more over the top...and more entertaining than Mr. Johnson calling a buzzer beater. Unfortunately, he's been relegated to the 4th team games in this years NCAA Tournament.
So...in honor of Gus...we give you GusJohnsonCalls Website RIGHT HERE.

Johnson Apologizes For Comment On Johnson
Get your head out of the gutter...
Here's the play-by-play guy in question... either you like him or hate him for his tangents, his calls, and his general excitement...
((HT: NFL on CBS))
So...was there a call in that stack that drew your ire or a cocked brow...???
Go to the :38 mark...
Listen to it again...
Anything...???
Nothing here at OSG HQ, but Gus is apologizing anyway...
From Florio and PFT...
"If there is a perception of racism in this analogy, it is not coming from me," Johnson said. "People of all races have run from the law. However, to those who are offended, I apologize."
Dude, it was funny...
Carry on... with "breaking away from the cops speed..."
