Baseball legend Gary Carter dealing with brain tumors

Former baseball player Gary Carter is dealing with a diagnosis of four small brain tumors and will have surgery at Duke University Hospital within the next week.

Carter, a Hall of Fame catcher who played for the Expos and Mets, Giants and Dodgers during his 19-year career currently lives in West Palm Beach, Florida and is manages the baseball team at Palm Beach Atlantic College.

Carter doesn't yet know if the tumors or benign or malignent.

We wish Carter the best, he was one of the greatest catchers ever to play the game of baseball and was very well liked.

Harmon Killebrew passes away: Baseball legend

Harmon Killebrew

One of baseball's legends passed away this morning. Harmon Killebrew, Minnesota Twins first baseman and prodigious home run hitter passed away at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 74.

Killebrew hit 573 homers in a 22-year baseball career that ended in 1975. He broke into the Majors in 1954.

Twins team president Dave St. Peter issued this statement on the team website: "No individual has ever meant more to the Minnesota Twins organization and millions of fans across Twins Territory than Harmon Killebrew." "Harmon will be long remembered as one of the most prolific home run hitters in the history of the game and the leader of a group of players who helped lay the foundation for the long-term success of the Twins franchise and Major League Baseball in the Upper Midwest."

Among his accomplishments, 11 All-Star selections and the 1969 Most Valuable Player award. And for those not aware, he was the model for the silhouette'd logo used my Major League Baseball. Killebrew was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.

Killebrew spent his retirement as a successful businessman and occasional stops on the memorabilia circuit. He was one of baseball's greatest hitters.

No word yet on services, but you can be there will be a large Major League Baseball contingent there.

BREAKING: Blyleven And Alomar Heading To Cooperstown

Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven have been elected to baseball's Hall of Fame.

Alomar and Blyleven were chosen by the Baseball Writers' Association of America after near misses in the past few seasons of voting.

Alomar was picked on 90 percent of the ballots. He was a 12-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner at second base.

Blyleven was listed on more than 79 percent of the ballots. He won 287 games and ranks fifth on the career strikeout list.

Just so you know... Rafael Palmeiro, Jeff Bagwell and Mark McGwire all were under the 50 percent mark.

The induction ceremony will be held July 24th in Cooperstown, New York.

The Big Hurt (Frank Thomas) rides off into the Sunset

Legendary baseball slugger Frank Thomas made it official today. He is retiring from baseball, although he really didn't play last season either. Thomas will also get his jersey retired by the team he spent the majority of his career with, the Chicago White Sox, this upcoming season.

Thomas, finished a very successful career with 521 home runs, a .300 plus batting average and probably will be headed to Cooperstown sometime in the future. Even through the steroid era, Thomas' size, strength and hitting ability were never questioned. A former football and baseball player at Auburn, he was just a big dude with some game.

Thomas, who could at times be not totally comfortable or friendly with the media, never the less leaves with a huge legacy in the city of Chicago. The White Sox were not always the best team during his tenure, but with him in the lineup, they were always a threat.

We suspect Thomas will be visiting Cooperstown somewhere on or around 2014, though it is hard to tell with the bizarre election practices that the Baseball Hall of Fame has. We think that he more than others however will be a fairly easy choice.

Dawson Elected To Hall Of Fame...

And that's it for this year...

Dawson received 420 of 539 votes in voting announced by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. That was 15 votes over the 75 percent necessary to gain election.

The eight-time All-Star, appearing on the ballot for the ninth time, was 44 votes short last year.

Bert Blyleven had 400 votes, up from 338 last year, and will likely get in because he has two more tries on the BBWAA ballot. The HQ is still trying to figure out, for the life of us, why he hasn't gotten in yet.

Roberto Alomar received 397 votes in his first appearance and was followed by Jack Morris with 282.
