Dueling Newpaper Covers

We did a story on this a couple of days ago and thought to ourselves "Hmmmm...wonder what the New York and Boston papers will do on Sunday to top this".

Well, here's the answer to that question. While it would be really hard to top the Star Wars cover the New York Post came up with, they tried. Today they went for the gold. They went after the snickering little joke that the New York media finds humorous, the Rex Ryan alleged foot-fetish. Check out the cover on the right.

As for our friends in Boston. They didn't get quite as graphic or tawdry or whatever descriptive adjective that you'd like to use.

The  Boston Herald, they just called the Jets "Little Green Invaders". Humorous yes, belly laugh...not so much.

Really, as much as we hate both of these city's sports teams, we've enjoyed the back and forth banter leading up to this game. That's with the exception of Antonio Cromartie's stupid commentary and Bart Scott comment that "It will be the last time he wears that uniform" in response to Wes Welker's hilarious press conference.

Because of Scott's idiotic statement, now the NFL will be watching with both sets of bi-focals. Hopefully nobody will do something stupid during the game. We're guessing if they do, it won't be New England, they really don't need it. They seem to be laughing all of this off...as they should. The Jets, they seem to be taking it a tad more seriously. Too seriously.

For what it's worth--we're taking the Patriots in this game....31-21.

NY Post, the cover...too funny to ignore

We were going to let sleeping dogs lie as the cliche' goes, but this was too funny...and creative to ignore.
The folks at the New York Post, known mostly for their bombast, but not necessarily the carrying out of actual journalism topped themselves this morning. They came up with a cover for their daily tabloid that can only be described as "Epic".

Look at the image on the side of this story. It covers everything. Heck, it even has Rex Ryan's wife on it as Princess Leia.

Yes, really, we've grown tired of the bluster coming out of this game, which has mostly been from the Jets. They seem to, for some reason believe that the Patriots are talking crap about them behind their backs too. We think laughing might be a better way to phrase it.

Oh, by the way. Don't think the Boston papers are sitting idly by and missing an opportunity to pile on. This is what Boston's Metro paper is featuring on its cover. Wonder where they came up with that idea?

Really, despite the battle of humor, we are growing weary of this. Both teams, though we think mostly the Jets are trying to make this into a Red Sox/Yankees type of rivalry.

If it weren't for the Patriots and people of Boston injecting some humor into this, we'd be as angry as we were the other day when we reported on Antonio Cromartie's idiotic rant. Really, we never thought we'd ever be rooting for New England, but we are hoping that they'll put the Jets out of all of our collective misery.

As for those of you don't believe the Patriots think this whole thing is just funny, then listen to wide receiver Wes Welker's subtle jokes as he speaks at a press availability on Thursday.

Joe DiMaggio In The Raw

WHERE have your clothes gone, Joe DiMaggio? A full-frontal nude photograph of Joltin' Joe is hanging in a San Francisco art gallery, part of an exhibition, "Hunted and Gathered," of photos from the collection of museum curator Robert Flynn Johnson. The image shows DiMaggio, circa 1940, before he became intensely private, in a postgame shower, wearing a goofy grin. Asked how he obtained the photo, Johnson joked to the San Francisco Chronicle, "I have friends in low places." The nude Joe is not for sale. "It's too interesting a photo," Johnson says.

Makes sense that a dude named "Johnson" is the curator of the museum. It's actually being displayed at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.

Those of us at the OSG HQ are really creeped out about this. It's one cultural experience we think we will pass on.

Broadway Brett Now A N.Y. Jet

I swear I could hear a collective J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS when the announcement was made that Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets. Jet fans haven’t been this excited over a quarterback acquisition since Joe Nameth came aboard in 1965. All Broadway Joe did was win a Super Bowl and change pro football forever. Broadway Brett has some work to do to equal that.

Of course, this signals the end of the Chad Pennington era with the Jets
and typical of New York, there is always someone to crap on the Jets big moment. Like Jay Greenberg’s column in the New York Post

I think it’s a great move for the Jets. It will make them at least a playoff contender but more importantly, the New York Giants won’t have a monopoly in the New York media.
