So it looks like it will be Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski now for the starting job in Oakland...
In an interview with Josh Dubow, Oakland Senior executive John Herrera said JaMarcus Russell's three season are over and that "we wish him well."
The decision comes less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington.
Russell is definitely now in rare air: being considered the biggest draft bust in NFL history along with guys like Tony Mandarich and Ryan Leaf. He will have been paid more than $39 million by the Raiders in exchange for only seven wins- almost $6-million per victory... if our math is right...
He lost his starting job midway through last season to several other quarterbacks.
So, his Raiders history of being a rookie holdout, having poor work habits, being
overweight and not having a cast good enough to win will be with his pro football reputation.
He's got that going for him...

Lawrence Taylor May Be In BIG Trouble
***BREAKING NEWS***Former New York Giants Linebacker and Pro Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor is sitting in jail right now.
He was arrested by Ramapo Police after being accused of raping someone at a Hotel in Montebello, NY.

Apparently the woman in question was a 15-year old. She was escorted to the hotel according to the police report...by a "pimp".

1600 UPDATE: Taylor has been charged with third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute in an assault on a 16-year-old runaway who was, according to police, brought to his suburban New York City hotel room against her will.
Police say the victim was 16, one year below the legal age of consent in New York.
Taylor's attorney, Kenneth Gribetz, says he is confident his client will be proven innocent. Ramapo ((NJ)) Chief of Police Peter Brower says Taylor paid the girl $300. He wouldn't comment on whether Taylor knew how young she was, but he said, "Ignorance is not an excuse to an individual's age."
1635 UPDATE: Taylor and attorney Arthur Aidala appeared in court for close to 30 minutes Thursday afternoon. Bail was agreed for $75,000 after an initial prosecution request for $100,000.
A protection notice on behalf of the complainant, known as "CF" in court documents, was issued for a 6-month time period. The next meeting for the case between parties is set for June 10.

Harwell And The HQ
Everyone has their Ernie Harwell story...
And, yes, not to be left out I have mine...
My story cannot compare to that of a Mitch Albom, who so eloquently tells his story here with the Detroit Free Press here.
Or Jim Rome, who spent the first hour of his Wednesday show talking about him and Tour Stop 31 in 2003...((HT: PurpleLatex))
But someone like Harwell, when he rubs off on you, you never forget...
In 2002, he was making his farewell tour. And a lot of us in the business were making a huge fuss over the whole thing- something Harwell, I'm sure, pooh-poohed up-and-down since he never thought of himself as that much of a big deal.
I decided that when he came to HQ's base of Atlanta, I wanted to spend some time getting Ernie to talk about the past and the present. The Tigers organization told me to send a note to his representatives. The Tigers were playing the Diamondbacks in Phoenix, so I faxed a two-page letter to the hotel explaining what I wanted to do. I'm fairly certain, to this day, I have the letter somewhere in the stacks of paper I call "my life."
Returning home from a party at one in the morning, my cell phone starts ringing. Since I didn't have a holster to put it in while I drove, I dropped it in between my golf shirt and undershirt. It was resting on the belt line, and as I fished for it, I think I keyed it to answer.
After what seemed like forever, I dragged it out from the in-between and said hello...
"Mister Nelson?" the voice on the other end asked...
I knew exactly who it was...
"Well, sir," I replied, "my father is always 'Mister Nelson.' Mister Harwell, I'm just 'Jon.' But thank you for that..."
He laid out the time and place, and I was fortunate to sit with him for 17 minutes ((you remember little things like that)) to barely scratch the surface on a 60-year career. Good enough for, about, 2:00 minutes of tape that really should have been eight or nine. I'm fairly certain that I have that interview in the boxes of tapes that I call "my life."
And I realized after I hung up the phone for that call from Phoenix, that Ernie Harwell, THAT ERNIE FREAKING HARWELL, was hearing some odd sounds for forever before I found my phone...

There was one more game I wanted, almost needed, to watch... his last... in Toronto against the Blue Jays on September 29th. I was one of the few, strangely and surprisingly so, to stay in the Tigers radio booth on that day. The list was very small: The Tigers radio crew- Harwell, Jim Price, Dan Dickinson, the local radio engineer- a videographer from WDIV-TV, Richard Sandomir of the New York Times, Chuck Swirsky ((Toronto Raptors play-by-play announcer at the time)), and me...
Traffic was intermittent... a production assistant had a handful of baseballs for the gentleman eating his popcorn in the middle innings to sign- asking "Are you Mister Harwell...?"
And, then, he said a "Thank You."
Remember, it wasn't a good-bye... thanks to our friends at FSDetroit...
It's the only time I've ever asked an autograph from someone I interviewed...
The lessons I learned in only two days of being around him are still with me...

Copycat Runs Out In Philly, No Tasing This Time...

Disappointingly...
34-year-old Thomas Betz climbed out of the Citizens Bank Park stands at a crucial point in the game Phils-Cards game last night.
Cole Hamels was about to deliver his first pitch of the ninth inning in a 1-0 game when Betz hopped the fence in left field and ran along the warning track, waving his arms.
"Aww, man. What an idiot," said Phils color guy Chris Wheeler. "Just, that's just an idiot to do that in a game this important, at this point, with Hamels all pumped up. What a dope."
Security did not use a Taser to apprehend Betz, despite boos and chants of "Tase him, Tase him" from the sellout crowd. Security simply surrounded Betz, and he gave himself up without incident.
Betz now faces charges of defiant trespass, disorderly conduct, disrupting a meeting, criminal mischief and possession of marijuana, according to police. He was still being held on Wednesday morning.
Can he be tased after-the-fact...???

UVa Prepares For Love Vigil, Huguely Has A Past...
Wednesday night's vigil for Yeardley Love at the McIntire Amphitheater on the UVA campus will be public and open to the entire university and Charlottesville community.
The vigil begins at 8pm.

President John Casteen, Student Council President Colin Hood and fourth-year class President Sarah Elaine Hart will deliver remarks at the vigil, all accompanied by musical tributes and a candlelight vigil.
Hood said the entire program will last about an hour.
Other developments Wednesday: A police officer in southwest Virginia says she arrested Huguely in the town of Lexington back in November of 2008.
Officer R.L. Moss says Huguely was arrested for public intoxication after leaving a fraternity party at Washington & Lee University. The arresting officer said Huguely was yelling obscenities and threatening to kill her.
Moss shocked Huguely with a stun gun after resisting arrest for public intoxication.
She said in a statement Tuesday that she felt it necessary to use the stun gun because Huguely became abusive, and his size was "no match" for her.

Officer Moss says she wasn't surprised that Huguely turned physical again. "Surprised that he was involved in another incident involving physical violence? No. Surprised that he was involved in an incident to this extent? Yes," said Officer Moss.
Records show Huguely pleaded guilty to two charges last year, was placed on six months of probation and given a 60-day suspended sentence.

It really looks like I've moved to the home of wayward football players.
The Satellite office can only shake its collective head when staring at the thought of the Cincinnati Bengals signing Adam "Pac-Man" Jones to a contract.

It would make some sense if they actually needed someone to play the position that he does. They don't. They already have some pretty good cornerbacks on the team. They drafted another in the 3rd round this year.
We can only surmise that Mike Brown and Marvin Lewis envision the Bengals as the "Land of Misfit Toys". Either that or they are trying to re-claim the "Team Turmoil" label from the Steelers. Or maybe they just want to see how many hardship cases you can put in one stadium before it explodes. Who knows?

According to Mr. Reedy the "Pac-Man" contract would essentially be for the minimum, which is great. But what does he have to offer? I believe what is being said that he is working out like a madman and desperate for another chance to show he is a changed man. Really, I do. I just don't believe that he is that sincere. I don't think he realizes that the problem...from the get go hasn't been anything else, hasn't been his talent...no, the problem has been him.

Bobby Petrino's House For Sale, Razorback Fans Panic
[HT: Whole Hog Sports.com ]Arkansas Razorback head football coach Bobby Petrino has his house in Fayetteville on the market. This caused the Razorback message boards to light up.
Calm down Razorback fans, coach Petrino isn't going anywhere (Are there any openings?) but Arkansas media relations did e-mail this statement to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and the Northwest Arkansas Times.
"Coach Petrino owns a home here in Fayetteville and he still owns a home in Atlanta. His home in Atlanta has been on the market for some time and with the market being what it is he would like to sell at least one of the homes. Another factor on the timing is that … his daughter is headed to college this fall. His other children are older and at a point where they have their own residences."
There you have it, coach Petrino just wants to downsize. A $2.85 million salary only goes so far.
In case your interested in Bobby Petrino's home in Fayetteville it's 8,000 square feet with six bedrooms and six bathrooms with a pool and 3 acres of property. Asking price, $2.2 million.
Before the rumors become rampant I have no plans in moving back home to NW Arkansas right now.

Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox was honored by the United States Congress for 50 years in baseball on Tuesday. A cake was made in Cox's honor. Unfortunately spell check wasn't an option.

When staffers for Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson saw the error they quickly sliced into the bottom half of the cake.
Here's what Isakson spokesman Sheridan Watson said about the cake gaffe.
"The catering company had delivered the cake and we immediately realized his last name was spelled incorrectly. The only people who saw it were me, the scheduler and unfortunately some media members who had arrived early and took pictures. We immediately started cutting the cake.”
Those of us at the OSG HQ hope the cake didn't taste like the way the Braves manager's name was misspelled.

There will not be a public memorial service for long-time Detroit Tigers play-by-play announcer Ernie Harwell. A public viewing for Harwell will be held at Comerica Park on Thursday, starting at 7AM...
“It might be an all-night vigil,” Harwell's friend and attorney, S. Gary Spicer, said.
Spicer's probably right...
The Tigers will raise a flag bearing Harwell’s initials on the centerfield flag pole before Monday's game against the Yankees- their first home game at Comerica after the service. It will be flown through the end of the season. Also, for the rest of the season, all players will wear a patch on the right sleeve of their uniform in memory of Harwell.
A private service will be held by his family.
If you'd like to make a donation of some kind: Donations can be made to the Ernie Harwell Foundation. The Foundation furthers the endowment of the Ernie Harwell Collection at the Detroit Public Library and funds partial scholarships to the four colleges that bestowed honorary degrees on him: the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Northern Michigan University and Adrian College.

Harwell, who was 92, had been battling cancer of the bile duct for the past year. He had retired a few years ago from baseball and was living in the Detroit area.

Tasered Kid's Mom Apologizes For Tasered Kid

Steve Consalvi, 17, of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, was tasered after he ran onto the field at the Phillies-Cardinals game last night.
Consalvi's mother, Amy Zeigler, says her son was very sorry for what happened, and she also apologized to the team for causing the publicity about the incident:
"My son is upset about this. He regrets it. He still loves them. We want them to go far."
Zeigler said her son went to the Phillies game with friends, but his behavior at the game was atypical.
"He is a wonderful kid. This isn't like him," she said.
Zeigler said she didn't know what motivated Consalvi to jump onto the field.
"It was stupid, absolutely stupid."

UVA Lacrosse Death "Not Intended," Seasons To Continue

The lawyer for the defendant in the UVa lacrosse murder case told reporters that George Huguely did not intend to kill Yeardley Love, and that it was a "tragic accident."
Huguely is the accused in the murder of Love.
Both played for the university's lacrosse teams.
He appeared in a Charlottesville courtroom this morning through a video link-up from Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail.
After the hearing, defense lawyer Fran Lawrence told reporters that Love's death was "not intended but an accident with a tragic outcome." Lawrence also said in a statement that Huguely would be withdrawing from the university.

The next court date in the Huguely case is June 10- what is set to happen on the 10th is not currently clear...

Bulls Officially Fire Del Negro

The biggest non-secret in the city of Chicago became official this afternoon as the Bulls and GM Gar Forman fired coach Vinny Del Negro after two 41-41 seasons.
Chicago Bulls executive John Paxson says he isn't planning to join fired coach Vinny Del Negro in looking for a new job. Paxson spoke to reporters for the first time since the did-he-choke-did-he-not-choke Del Negro late last month over playing time for the Bulls' Joakim Noah.
Paxson says he accepts the criticism and "people saying I should probably be fired or released." But the executive vice president also says he's not going anywhere and plans to contribute to the Bulls' organization for years to come.
Of course he does, now that his job is safe for another season...

Run On The Field, You Get Tased Bro
A 17 year old Phillie fan acted like a horses back side and ran on the field Monday night in the eighth inning of the Phillies - Cardinals game. A Philadelphia police officer brought the fan down using a taser gun.

Philadelphia police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore did say that an internal affairs unit would open an investigation to determine if the firing "was proper use of the equipment."
The 17 year old fan is being charged with criminal trespass. Those who keep up with such things say its the first time a fan has been tased at a Major League Baseball game.
Those of us at the OSG HQ say if you a stupid enough to run onto a field during a game you deserve whatever punishment is coming to you.

Did Marc Savard Take A Bite Out Of Dan Carcillo...?

In Game One of the series, Marc Savard made a bit of a triumphant return to the ice after taking care of a Grade 2 concussion. In a scrum in the corner, Carcillo made a bit of a run at number 91 and finished the group gathering by reaching for Savard's throat...
A lot of people, the HQ included, thought Carcillo's move wasn't cool and hope it was a work and not a genuine disregard for the Code.
In Game 2, the second period had another scrum where Carcillo ended up paired up with Savard again. Carcillo claims that, in the pile, Savard bit him. Carcillo made a point ot yell at any official that "he (Savard) bit my hand."
James Murphy of NESN caught up with Savard after Game 2:
"He pummeled my face, pulled on my teeth, so I guess that’s biting when a guy tries to pull your teeth out like [he did]," Savard claimed. "I don’t know. I don’t see how that is biting. Yeah, I mean, he embellishes stuff. Obviously, under the pile, you try to pull out my front teeth, so if that’s a bite then I don’t know what to say."
But Savard said more and took a shot at Carcillo’s rather scattered dental situation.
"I don’t know if you want to look like him, but he pulled on them."

DEVELOPING STORY: LP Field and Bridgestone Arena Flooded
The Nashville flooding is of, what the locals are calling, a 100-500-year flood...
It's bad news, folks...
From a sports perspective, both the Bridgestone Arena and LP Field are now underwater to varying degrees.

A Nashville Electric Service substation had to be shut down because it was being threatened with flood waters. When the substation shut down, it cut power to the stadium, which cut power to the stadium’s pumps.
A two-day cause-and-effect for a lot of long-term damage...
Within the last hour, the home of the Nashville Predators, now-Bridgestone Arena, has water on the ice level. Everything below is dressing rooms, and expensive video equipment...

Mettenberger Pleads Guilty, Banned From Georgia Town

Zach Mettenberger's attorney said he pled guilty to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery for inappropriate touching dating back to a March 7 incident at a Remerton, Georgia bar, according to Southern Judicial Circuit district attorney J. David Miller.
“The sexual battery counts were the result of Mettenberger grabbing the breasts and touching the buttocks of the victim,” Miller said in an e-mail to Tim Tucker and the AJC.
Mettenberger is now responsible for the following:
A) He was sentenced to "two concurrent 12-month periods of probation under the First Offender act..."
B) Gets to pay $35 per month for a probation supervision fee and a fine of $2,000- totalling $2,840- if our math is correct.
Mettenberger also cannot drink any alcohol. He can't be at a place where alcohol is sold. He's banished from the city of Valdosta and cannot have any contact with the victim.
The other charges in the case were dropped in light of the specs laid out by the Lowndes County DA.
