Phillies fans tossed from game for fan interference

The play in question/WPVI-TV
((ht: sun-sentinel.com))

This is, well, a bit odd. And it happened Sunday afternoon at the Philadelphia Phillies versus Florida Marlins game.

Here's the set-up: With Ryan Howard on 1st and Hunter Pence hitting during a tie game in the top of the 6th inning, Pence hits a ball to the right field wall. Florida's rightfielder jumps for it and two Phillies fans sitting in the corner reach over to try and grab it too.

Ball bounces off the wall and Pence rolls into 2nd with what appears to be a ground rule double. Florida manager Trader Jack McKeon didn't see it that way, asks for a review...and gets it.

The umps come out, toss the fans and call Pence out. Charlie Manuel blows a gasket, and he gets tossed out.

Read the whole adventure from Mike Berardino and the Sun-Sentinel RIGHT HERE

Hmmm. We thought the replay rule in baseball was only for home runs. And it appears the Phillies thought the same way. It's unfortunate the fans got tossed for interfering though, they were probably 2 of the 1500 or so actually in attendance at SunLife Stadium.

Okay, it's video of a video on a computer screen, but here's the play in question:

Will The Phils And Giants Do This Again In October...???

And, by that, we mean "brawl..."

The Giants' Ramon Ramirez drilled Shane Victorino in the 6th inning of a 9-2 loss to the Phillies starting a bench-clearing that led to ejections for Ramirez, Victorino and Giants catcher Eli Whiteside, who (literally) was hopping mad before setting off an all-out brawl. Whiteside was ready for Placido Polanco coming out of the dugout...
((HT: CSNBayArea/youtube))

Victorino was asked if he thought Ramirez went after him intentionally...

"Yeah, absolutely, I think he did. That's why I took a step forward. I had no intentions of going out there and charging the mound. I just wanted to go out there and get an answer. ... Obviously, Eli felt like, from looking at his reaction, I was going to go. He started jumping around. Polanco came in and he tackled Polanco. Everything escalated from there."

Here's Victorino...

Phillie Phanatic goes down...

((ht: bigleadsports/AP))

Haha! This is pretty funny video. The Phillie Phanatic, the mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies was at a minor league game in Allentown, PA last night and was doing what mascots do during games--working the crowd.

However, he was working the crowd during an at-bat and not necessarily paying attention, when a foul ball was hit his way. The mascot, and the guy in the costume, went down...and went down hard.

According to the Associated Press, the guy in the costume was sent to the hospital--we assume out of his costume--checked and released.

Phillies Win The Game That Wouldn't End, Defeat Reds 5-4

Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park it took 19 innings for the Philadelphia Phillies to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4.

The Phils won it on all things by a sacrifice fly by Raul Ibanez scoring Drew Stubbs.

Wilson Valdez started the game at second base and ended up the winning pitcher taking the mound in the 19th inning. Valdez become the first player in 90 years to start and game in the field and get the win on the mound. The last player to do that was none other than Babe Ruth in 1921.

Heck Valdez has more wins as a pitcher than Cy Young award winner Ubaldo Jimenez of the Rockies.

Here's the man of the hour after the game. (Thanks CSN Philadelphia)

The game took six hours and 11 minutes to play and ended at 1:19 am Thursday morning. The Phillies used 21 players, the Reds 20.

Florida League Game Goes 23 Innings

And it seems it almost had as many at-bats as people watching the game...

A Florida State League lasted 23 innings before the Jupiter Hammerheads Jose Duarte singled in Jaime Ortiz to beat the Clearwater Threshers 2-1.

The game ended after 5 hours, 37 minutes. Attendance was 330 for a game that began at 6:30 p.m. and ended after midnight.

The teams went scoreless from the seventh to the 23rd inning.

Each team used eight pitchers and both team's starting catchers played the entire game, and yes, not all the pitchers who pitched were pitchers...

Here's the 23rd inning and the merciful end of the game...

Clearwater is a Philadelphia Phillies affiliate, while Jupiter is a Florida Marlins farm team.

No word on if the catchers get the day off today...

Never Let A Robot Throw A First Pitch

Don't get the HQ wrong...

We wholeheartedly commend the kids at Penn for creating something that looks like an advanced version of those pitching machines we hit off as a kid...

You know...

Throw in a quarter, get 8 swings...

As the ballpark was celebrating Science Day, the robot was the headliner...
And it short-armed it badly...

Here's what the Philly fans got to boo about this time...

Dallas Green Discusses Granddaughter At Spring Training

Former Philadelphia Phillies manager Dallas Green discussed for the first time the death of his granddaughter Christina during the shooting rampage surrounding US Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona during Super Bowl week.

He stood for 20 minutes and answered questions about his "princess."

Sigh!....Cliff Lee goes to Philadelphia

Cliff Lee/Courtesy: michael s. wirtz-philly.com
Really, Major League Baseball isn't fair. It's the only game where the rich get richer and the Pittsburgh Pirates are a Triple A team.

Yes, in a move that left Sports Journalists and Philadelphia fans excited, top free agent pitcher Cliff Lee spurned the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers, to sign a 5-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

More from the gloating Philly.com RIGHT HERE

We truly are conflicted here. While we are very happy he didn't go to the Yankees, we are a little disappointed he ended up in the National League East. Particularly a team that already has Roy Halliday, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels.

Here is the reaction from an odd sounding...and gushing reporter Ross Klavens from NBC Philadelphia who we suspect may be getting his 1st ever Sports related story.

View more news videos at: http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/video.

Now....the part of this we take humor in. The Yankees are not getting any of the "High Priced" Free Agents they wanted. And the New York fans, media and team...are already whining, not understanding how anyone could spurn them.

Enjoy your New York perspective from Mike Lupica of the DailyNews RIGHT HERE

While Daily News columnist Andy Martino says "Surprise"Lee will regret it. RIGHT HERE

There isn't much TV coverage in the Big Apple, so we'll do a quick breakdown. Short of injury, the Phillies are now your team to beat in Baseball. It's safe to compare them to the Miami Heat. We can't fathom how much money they must take in every year, because their payroll is quickly approaching Yankees/Red Sox status.

As for the Yankees, they'll be alright. They still have their mega-gazillionaire's in the field and C.C Sabbathia on the mound. Sure, they'll have to rely on Andy Pettite to be good--and healthy, but they will hit well enough to win most of the time.

The only potential saving grace here is that the team with the biggest salary doesn't always win the World Series. The San Francisco Giants proved that again this year. We hope that trend will continue, because as much as we like baseball, we really don't want to see a forgone conclusion before the season even starts.

An oldie, but something you'll probably here in Philly....

Halladay A Hero In Philly

While I was watching Roy Halladay's post season no hitter against the Cincinnati Reds I kept reminding my seven year old son who happens to be a big Halladay fan that he is witnessing something extremely rare in baseball. I told my son that I have never seen a post season no hitter and the only one that was thrown, Don Larsen's perfect game, his grandfather was 19.

It was a great baseball moment shared with my son.

By the way, there was a Dallas Green sighting in Philly who may be the only individual who witnessed Halladay's no hitter and Don Larsen's perfect game in person. (Thanks CSN Philly)

And here's a morning after report from NBC 10 Philadelphia.

BREAKING: Halladay's First Start Goes Well, No-Hits Reds

Roy Halladay's first post-season start went pretty well...

Halladay no-hit the Cincinnati Reds on 104 pitches- 79 of them strikes...

His ninth inning was fairly tame in the 4-0 shutout...

Ramon Hernandez pinch-hitting appearance was a pop up to Chase Utley.
Miguel Cairo popped up into foul ground to third baseman Wilson Valdez.
Brandon Phillips then grounded out weakly to Ryan Howard to seal the deal...

By the way, it's the first post-season no-hitter since Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series... not bad...

The Phillies opened the scoring with a Chase Utley fly ball scored Shane Victorino in the first inning. Victorino had doubled and stolen third.

The Phils then chased Reds starter Edinson Volquez from the game in the second, when Halladay drove in a run. Victorino drove home two more with another single.

More when we know more...

Here's the post game comments from Roy Halladay following his post season pitching gem. (Thanks CSN Philly)

Matt Diaz Helps Philly Security

((HT: SportsSouth/MLB/MLBAM/Youtube))

The Atlanta Braves season seems to be in somewhat free-fall these days, but left fielder Matt Diaz gave a Philadelphia fan some free-fall of his own last night.

You know those one piece suits that make kids look creepy...??? Someone wore one last night and rushed onto the field at CB Park thinking their anonymity would add speed to their on-field dashing abilties.

It was working for a while, then Diaz stepped in and tripped the kid- slowing him down enough for the tackle by the resident blue jackets...

"I thought he was coming at me," Diaz said, "so I was ready at first. I didn't want to get hurt, and I didn't want to hurt him," Diaz said. "So I stuck my foot out.

"I figured the guy would probably rather I trip him than get tazed."

Oswalt To Philly Okey-Dokeyed

Houston AStros ace Roy Oswalt may be on his way to Philadelphia, but he has to waive his no-trade clause to do it...

So sayeth David Murphy, Phillies beat writer for Philly.com...

It looks like the Astros would get starter J.A. Happ and prospects in return...

Happ is economically feasible, at just under $500-grand for a salary figure...

FOSG and MyFoxHouston Sports Director Mark Berman broke the story last night, and says that both sides have agreed on just how much money the Astros and Phillies will divvy up when it comes to paying the Astros ace. The 2012 option year of Oswalt's contract is still in play.

More when we know more...
In the interim, Ken Rosenthal from FoxSports tells us who isn't getting Oswalt...
((HT: FoxSports))

1830 UPDATE: Mark Berman confirms that Oswalt waived his no-trade...

"It feels pretty good actually to have all of this stuff out of the way and I can concentrate on baseball," Oswalt said.

Oswalt said he will pitch for the Phillies Friday against the Washington Nationals.

"I love the city of Houston and the Astros fans," Oswalt said. "They have been great to me and the Astros are a great organization. I think it's time for us to separate and do something different.

"Philly has a great team with a chance to go to the World Series. I wanted this deal to be good for both the Astros and me and I think it is."

Breaking: Hallady equals Perfection....

***BREAKING NEWS****

We now have 20 perfect games that have been pitched in the long history of Major League Baseball.

Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies in number 20 after he threw a "Perfecto" against the Florida Marlins on a warm Saturday night in South Florida.

More from Philly.com RIGHT HERE

((Roy Halladay tonight//Courtesy: cbc.ca))

He had to be perfect to beat Marlins ace Josh Johnson and 2 relief pitchers who held the Phillies to 1 run on 7 hits tonight.

We tip our hat to Halladay who has pretty much dominated National League Hitters upon his arrival this season.

Philadelphia's "Throw Up" Kid pleads guilty....

One of our favorite and grossest stories of the past couple of months has reached a fitting end today.

Matthew Clemmens, the 21 year-old who "Vomited" on or towards an off-duty police officer and his kids at a Philadelphia Phillies game back on April 14th, pled guilty this afternoon. Mr. Clemmens was charged with several different offenses, not including the one to humanity and had a couple of others dismissed.

More from Philly.com RIGHT HERE

Clemmens will have a sentencing hearing on July 30th. While he doesn't necessarily need to rot in jail for a long period of time, he needs to, along with the ridicule heaped upon him...fully understand the classlessness and stupidity of his behavior and actions.

Copycat Runs Out In Philly, No Tasing This Time...

((HT: WTXF-TV))

Disappointingly...

34-year-old Thomas Betz climbed out of the Citizens Bank Park stands at a crucial point in the game Phils-Cards game last night.

Cole Hamels was about to deliver his first pitch of the ninth inning in a 1-0 game when Betz hopped the fence in left field and ran along the warning track, waving his arms.

"Aww, man. What an idiot," said Phils color guy Chris Wheeler. "Just, that's just an idiot to do that in a game this important, at this point, with Hamels all pumped up. What a dope."

Security did not use a Taser to apprehend Betz, despite boos and chants of "Tase him, Tase him" from the sellout crowd. Security simply surrounded Betz, and he gave himself up without incident.

Betz now faces charges of defiant trespass, disorderly conduct, disrupting a meeting, criminal mischief and possession of marijuana, according to police. He was still being held on Wednesday morning.

Can he be tased after-the-fact...???
Here's coverage of the copycat, thanks to our friends at MyFoxPhilly.com

Tasered Kid's Mom Apologizes For Tasered Kid

((HT: WTXF-TV Philadelphia))

Steve Consalvi, 17, of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, was tasered after he ran onto the field at the Phillies-Cardinals game last night.

Consalvi's mother, Amy Zeigler, says her son was very sorry for what happened, and she also apologized to the team for causing the publicity about the incident:

"My son is upset about this. He regrets it. He still loves them. We want them to go far."

Zeigler said her son went to the Phillies game with friends, but his behavior at the game was atypical.

"He is a wonderful kid. This isn't like him," she said.

Zeigler said she didn't know what motivated Consalvi to jump onto the field.
"It was stupid, absolutely stupid."

You got that right, lady...

Run On The Field, You Get Tased Bro

A 17 year old Phillie fan acted like a horses back side and ran on the field Monday night in the eighth inning of the Phillies - Cardinals game. A Philadelphia police officer brought the fan down using a taser gun.

Here's the video (Thanks Youtube.com)

Philadelphia police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore did say that an internal affairs unit would open an investigation to determine if the firing "was proper use of the equipment."

The 17 year old fan is being charged with criminal trespass. Those who keep up with such things say its the first time a fan has been tased at a Major League Baseball game.

Those of us at the OSG HQ say if you a stupid enough to run onto a field during a game you deserve whatever punishment is coming to you.

Jason Heyward is the second coming....

Ok, we here at the satellite office have made no secret about our life-long fanship of the Atlanta Braves. And for the 1st time in a very...very long time, we have not been able to watch games on a regular basis, either in person or on TV. Last night was a treat.

By now, most baseball fans are beginning to find out about the legend of Jason Heyward. The OSG have been keeping tabs on the prodigious youngster from McDonough for several years. And as much as we thought that he would end up a star one day, nobody could have forseen this.

20-years old, he hits a 3-run homer on his 1st official MLB at-bat. He wins a game last week against Colorado with a 2-run single with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. He ties Tuesday's game with Philadelphia on a low outside pitch, one that he merely pulls and deposits in the Right-Center field seats.

Trust us when we say that everything that you've heard about the young man is true: it is. He's one of the guys who is going to change the game of baseball. Really. We are very sure that all of this talk about him isn't going to go to his head, he's not that type.

Heck, he's gotten the city of Atlanta and his Braves teammates riled up like they haven't been in years. Last night, to top his game tying HR, Centerfielder Nate McLouth, who was hitting .138, wins the game on the 1st at-bat in the bottom of the 10th inning. He circles the bases only to find the time emptied the dugout, there was nobody to celebrate with until he went into the tunnel.

You'll have to go to the Braves website to see the video. You can find it HERE

For anyone not familiar with Mr. Heyward, check this out: Thanks You Tube

Can Philadelphia fans behave worse than this?

((ht: big lead/nbcphiladelphia))

If you ever needed proof that Philadelphia fans are the worst of the worst, we now have it. This past Wednesday, they did something that if you didn't read the account or see, you would never believe.

Several fans were ejected and one forced himself to vomit on an off-duty police officer and his kids who were in the stands watching the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Washington Nationals.

More details from NBC Philadelphia RIGHT HERE

((Matthew Clemmens mug shot//Courtesy: philadelphia police/nbc10))

To say that this is wrong would be possibly the largest understatement of all-time. Truly, if there was ever a case that exemplifies why there shouldn't be alcohol allowed at sporting events, this is it.

While we do understand that fans have a right to enjoy the game and either cheer or boo players and teams...there is nothing...absolutely nothing that can justify this.

Most of us have attended games and either seen or experienced unruly fans. A lot of stadiums now have family friendly areas. It just is really pathetic to have a need for such places. There are ZERO....ZERO reasons that fans have a right to yell out curse words at players. Argue the 1st amendment all you want, anyone who does it should be immediately ejected from the park.

To their credit, it appears that is what the ushers at Citizens Bank ballpark did. However they missed one. A 21-year old, who we are quite sure was drunk.

Thankfully, while his alleged friends just were asked to leave the stadium, the 21-year old, Matthew Clemmens was not only ejected, he was taken directly to jail and charged with assaulting the officer and his family. Mr. Clemmens..."Fat, Drunk and Stupid is no way to go through life".

Here is the TV Version of the story done by the folks at WCAU-TV in Philadelphia:
