UPDATE: We know more...
California developer and pizza chain owner Alex Meruelo is the lucky guy, and the NBA team will remain in Atlanta. The deal, subject to the approval of the NBA, is to be announced on Monday.
Meruelo, who will have controlling interest of more than 50 percent of the Hawks, founded La Pizza Loca. It has over 50 franchised and company-owned restaurants in Southern California.
He also heads something called "The Meruelo Group," a Downey, California-based investment firm, which recently acquired the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, for a reported $42.45 million.

1615 UPDATE: We know more... he has a quote from Mark Bradley's interview in the AJC saying:
"I'm a person who doesn't give up. I want to bring a championship to the city of Atlanta."
Meruelo would become the first Hispanic owner of an NBA team, and his holding company is the owner of one of the largest Hispanic television stations in the US- KWHY-TV in Los Angeles. If Meruelo is serious about being an owner, then tapping into Atlanta's Hispanic market would be a natural fit- albeit a tough one...

Developing: Hawks to be sold

Without time to elaborate, Sports Illustrated writer Ian Thomsen is reporting the Atlanta Hawks are about to be sold to an unnamed buyer.
Few details have been released aside from the 2-sources who confirmed what is about to happen to Thomsen.

The HQ isn't in a mood to believe Bruce Levenson or any other part of Spirit at present... we don't buy it- pardon the pun...
Maybe the Hawks will be moving to Winnipeg as well...

Another Group Making Play For Hawks...???
Talk about tiresome...
We've gone from The Balkan to this...
J. Michael Falgoust and Jake Kaplan of the multi-colored daily have a group bidding on the Atlanta Spirit properties on the table. Once the Thrashers sale to True North Sports and Entertainment goes through and is approved by the National Hockey League, the overall dollar amount would drop to US$400-million or so...
The new buyers...???
The CEOs of Global Wellington Financial Corp. and Oriana Capital Partners jumped in after the John Moores exclusivity window died May 20 to acquire both teams and the arena before the 2011-12 NBA season.
This group, that would be called W/C Holdings, was interested in the Memphis Grizzlies at one point, but couldn't get a play.
Former LSU forward Bernard Woodside is managing director and CEO of Global Wellington. Dexter Chappell is managing director of Oriana.
From the USA Today:
"It's critical and something that weighs heavily on our entire team of African Americans because we look at this as something that would be favorable for the African-American community and representing the community correctly," Woodside said. "It's an important aspect we never lose sight upon."
But, the HQ has this question...
If the Griz, which owner Michael Heisley seems to want to get rid of, couldn't come to an agreement with these guys, what makes the rest of us think that they have the leveraged capital to pick up an arena and a more successful ((for now)) NBA franchise...???
Bully for Woodside if he can pull this off since the world would be rid of Spirit once and for all...

Ex-Thrash Coach Anderson Talks About Old Team, Moores-Hawks Deal Dead For Now...((UPDATED With Off-Ice Personnel Decisions))

The HQ will be the first to admit that Anderson didn't get anything close to a fair shake when he was head coach of the Thrashers.
He was a successful minor-league coach who was fully respected. He was also economically-feasible for Spirit's choice for a head coach at the time.
Anderson was on NHLHomeIce this afternoon to discuss the possible/probable/inevitable move of the Thrashers to Winnipeg...
Among his money quotes...
"It's very difficult when you have an owner not willing to spend the money, or have a solid interest in the team itself."
And, from Tim Tucker at the AJC, the time period that soon-to-be-ex San Diego Padres owner John Moores had to negotiate exclusively with Spirit is wiped off the books.
"We no longer have an exclusivity," Gearon told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It was ended by mutual agreement after preliminary discussions."
Eklund and his HockeyBuzz-ness are relaying that the only way that True North fails in getting a team to Winnipeg is by not making an appointed season ticket number of 14,000. True North is also saying, through Eklund's sources, that they want it written in the deal that Spirit won't get a dime until that marker is achieved.
1800 UPDATE: In what may be another sign of the coming hockey demise in town, the flagship radio station for the Thrashers broadcasts, WCNN-AM/680TheFan, has let go all associated, on-air personnel that were not directly under contract with Atlanta Spirit itself. Remember what we were telling you about good people now having to find work because of the abject hubris of others...???

Monday NBA Playoffs: Surprise, Surprise, Surprise
How many people had Dallas beating L.A and Atlanta beating Chicago in the first game of their respective series...as the visitors?
Yeah, thought so.
Well, they did. The Hawks got 34 points from Joe Johnson and some solid defense from forgotten backup point guard Jeff Teague and took care of the heavily favored Chicago Bulls 103-95.
The schizophrenic Hawks took control early and never really relinquished the lead. Most so-called "Experts" had them getting swept and beaten in 5 games. And while the 5-game part is still an outside possibility, the Hawks seem to have stood up and said "We ain't going down without a fight".

Hawks don't believe in Magic: NBA Playoffs
A brief recap of the 3-month long NBA Playoff season is in order here:
To the apparent surprise of more people than it should, the Atlanta Hawks last night again took advantage of the Orlando Magic and now lead their best of 7 series, 3-1.
The Hawks, possibly the most schizophrenic team in the history of the NBA, matchup incredibly well with the 4th seeded Magic and if its possible, they've managed to out think Magic coach Stan Van Gundy.

The 5th seeded Hawks, despite losing their last 6 games leading into the playoffs, look the better prepared of the two teams.
The strategy has been simple. Leave Dwight Howard alone, if he scores 40 points so be it. The Hawks have managed to play the other 4 guys Orlando puts on the floor very well. Orlando's other 4 guys can only shoot what my former High School coach called "Dollar Bill" jump shots (meaning they can't jump over a $1 bill). And they aren't making them. At all. The Magic haven't adjusted to this and thusly will lose this series if not Tuesday, then by the end of the week.

Jamal Crawford Suing Single Mother

Most athletes have homes in more than one city- their home town and the town in which they work for their living.
In the case of Atlanta Hawks guard Jamal Crawford, he was renting a house from a single mom who had certain stips as part of the deal.
It appears that Jamal may have taken some liberties as part of his rental agreement, and he's suing/counter-suing anyway.

Dominique Wilkins attacked by former ref---Now with fight video
((ht: ajc.com))This is just plain weird. NBA Hall of Famer and Atlanta Hawks VP and Broadcaster Dominique Wilkins was attacked after the Hawks game on Wednesday night against the Orlando Magic.
The attacker, Rashan Michel jumped Wilkins, hitting him in the chest and hitting a security guard. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Michel was previously an NBA and College Referee and previously owned a clothing store. He claims Wilkins owes him money.

Interesting. Wilkins, for his part, wasn't hurt. But we are guessing he, along with everyone else who witnessed this was a bit stunned. Michel, at least judging by this mugshot, could possibly have tripped and fallen into someone's fist.
Having worked many Hawks games in our career, we know that they do have some security at Philips arena, but they tend to be off to the side and out of view. Perhaps that's something they might want to look into.

Two Groups Interested In Hawks, Thrashers, Philips... Really...???

Not much to update off the headline except the idea that neither group is close to signing anything on the line which is dotted. No paperwork has been filed. Both groups want to keep the teams in Philips, and one idea has some "developmental" aspects added to the proposed purchase.
Presumably, that means that what is referred to as "The Gulch," the undeveloped parking lot area adjacent to the railroad tracks and the arena itself, would be developed. Into what, no one has said. And the space for variances to construct anything other than parking decks would come, instantly, into question...
Vivlamore adds that it would take at least two months for any kind of vetting process to get an ownership swapping point. But out of town groups have been mentioned in efforts to move the Thrashers to three Canadian towns- Hamilton, Winnipeg, and Quebec City.

Chris Ciovacco has surfaced as the leader of the pack, and was recently interviewed by our friends at WXIA-TV in Atlanta.

NBA Silly Season Continues With Williams And Bibby
First, the Utah Jazz surprised the civilized world by sending resident-alleged trouble-maker Deron Williams to New Jersey for point guard Devin Harris, power forward Derrick Favors, and two first-round picks (from the Nets in 2011 and the Golden State Warriors in 2012).
The word associated with it, normally, was "shock..."

Then, this evening the Atlanta Hawks send 2011 underachiever Mike Bibby to the Eastern Conference version of Siberia- Washington- for Kirk Hinrich and centerman Hilton Armstrong.
The Hawks sent Bibby, rookie Jordan Crawford, swingman Mo Evans and their 2011 first-round draft pick to the Wizards.
Bibby, Crawford and Evans were informed of the trade prior to the team’s game against Phoenix tonight. Jeff Teague replaced Bibby in the starting lineup- his first start of the year.
The Hawks proceeded to get blown out early on in Phoenix against the Suns. They were down 11 in the third quarter...
Bibby was interviewed recently on GPB's SportsCentral program about what advice he would give high schoolers about the game...

Gearon On Thrashers: Looking For Investors Or A Change Of Address

Michael Gearon was a guest on the "Buck and Kincade" show on WCNN-AM Wednesday afternoon and was placed on the spit by Kincade...
Gearon admitted that Atlanta Spirit is looking for minority investors or majority investors to help the viability of Spirit and the Thrashers. Kincade is of the mind that local investors would be the best approach long-term, and Gearon replied that the group is of an open mind for any kind of investor.
"We're in a position now where, ideally, we need more fan support. We've been writing checks for the Thrashers for seven years, and it's a lot of money," Gearon admitted. "I know there's a correlation between winning and losing. I think the big challenge we have in Atlanta, is that we're not as strong a sports town as a Philadelphia or a Boston."
Gearon admitted that the on-ice product has had a difficult three or four weeks. From his prospective, he cares about both franchises and that both are important to the city. He's been handcuffed for five years, and he wants to strengthen the ownership of the team. He doesn't want to divest his share.
He also said his greater strength is basketball, but he loves the hockey team. He wants a strong group committed to the teams. It would be an ideal situation to have other locals involved along the line...
The perception of the owners being "cheap" is a misnomer in Gearon's mind- especially with the offer that they gave Ilya Kovalchuk last year, and the signing of Dustin Byfuglien this year to a 5-year, US$26-million dollar deal.
This is what the team is getting for that time...
There's talk that the deal is back-weighted, so the onus is on the new owners should the current owners go ahead with the sale...

Two Williams Suspended Three Games In NBA

The Atlanta Hawks’ Marvin Williams has been suspended two games without pay for throwing punches and fighting with the
New York Knicks’ Shawne Williams. Shawne Williams has been suspended one game without pay for throwing a punch during the
altercation.
The incident occurred with 43.7 seconds remaining in the fourth period of the Hawks’ 111-102 win over the Knicks last night.
This would be the altercation in question...

Magic Divests From Lakers, Hawks Next...?
This is just something we're putting out there after talking to a few of our own sources...
In the past few days, it was announced that Earvin Johnson was divesting himself of his shares in the Los Angeles Lakers franchise and selling them to local SoCal philanthropist and doctor, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, a season-ticket holder for 25 years.
Johnson paid a reported $10 million for his stake in ownership in 1994.
The Lakers did not say what percentage of the team Johnson owned, but some in the industry report put it as high as 5 percent, which could put the value of his stake at almost $30-million.
There was talk that Johnson was interested in the Pistons and the LA Dodgers- both of which he has publicly denied to the LA Times' Broderick Turner.
But the HQ isn't dumb. We all know what denials are good for...
Johnson was also linked to a possible percentage in the Golden State Warriors, but those talks didn't go anywhere, either.
So, that brings us to Atlanta...
The team is up for sale, regardless as to what Atlanta Spirit, LLC is saying publicly. They lack the capital to compete on various levels with any and all of their properties. The HQ even knows of an investigation by a CPA firm of the value of the Spirit properties within the last year.
We know the firm and the location of the investigation...
And, no, we're not telling you...
Don't be surprised if any move involving Joe Johnson is a sign-and-trade eventually. New Thrashers GM Rick Dudley has deftly waded through the Spirit waters to create a competitive team at a little over US$46M- US$17 under the cap. Donald Brashear's US$1.4-million buyout is included in that US$46-million.
Only 11 players on the current 25-man roster have signed on the line which is dotted for the 2011-12 season, and only five of those are under a deal for anything longer than that...
If the Thrashers are in no position to make the playoffs, most of Chicago South could be dealt by the trade deadline.
The NBA desperately wants a marquee name in Atlanta. Magic has had both his theater and fast-food franchises anchored in Atlanta at any given point of his entrepreneurship. He could gravitate toward the Pistons if Joe Dumars continues to flounder in his front office post.
But the opening in Atlanta is too large to ignore...

Johnson Handcuffs Hawks By Accepting Max Deal
Joe Johnson is staying with the Atlanta Hawks, his agent said in a blog published on the Huffington Post website Sunday.
Arn Tellem, Johnson's agent, said that Johnson agreed to accept the club's six-year, $119M contract offer. He confirmed the post to The AP ((presumably, FOSG Paul Newberry)).
"For his next act, Joe plans to actively recruit other top free agents to Atlanta, a place not unlike his hometown, where he feels comfortable and appreciated," Tellem wrote. "LeBron, you've already met with the front offices of six teams. How about considering the Hawks?"
The HQ thinks everyone associated with this deal has lost their damn minds. Tellem for even floating the above paragraph, Johnson for signing after a season where he criticized ownership, and ownership for thinking that this will help cure what ails this moribund franchise.
They still have to sign more players as Johnson is overrated and cannot do this alone. The interesting point now for Atlanta Spirit is who they think they'll attract and/or even re-sign for this roster with the money they don't have.
