Georgia high school football is in its second full week of doing games, and The Tigers had their season opener at their home away from home for the year- UTC's Finley Stadium- against rival Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe ((or "LFO" as the locals say))...
Let's just say it was a good night...

OSG High: If You Can't Beat Em, Join Em...

This is the first time that the HQ can remember something like this ever going down...
Lincoln County ((GA)) High School's Red Devils are coached by Larry Campbell. Coach Campbell has been around as head coach since 1972 and is 7th in the nation in career wins.
Garrison Hearst...??? Played under Campbell... the list of stars for all of Campbell's Class A state titles is huge, and when you see what can happen if you play under Campbell- you want to chase the bright lights.
Harlem High lost to LCHS 69-6 last weekend...
Their star running back, sophomore Mike McIntyre, after grinding out 60 yards in the loss transferred to Lincoln County...
McIntyre's eligibility is currently in question and evaluation by the Georgia High School Association and Coach Campbell has held McIntyre out of practice until he gets a final ruling...

The high school football season is either underway or just about to be underway in the state of Georgia. One eastern Georgia school is having to switch head coaches on the fly after a big no-no...
And, in the modern day and age of making sure everything is covered before your kids take the practice field, much less the field, this is huge...

OSG High: Parents Want Investigation In Son's Death

The HQ has covered Fitzgerald High School football in our Georgia workings. We have both personal and professional friends in the town, and we feel for their loss in the DJ Searcy case...
Earlier today in Atlanta, Searcy's parents held a presser at the national headquarters for the Omega Psi Phi fraternity...
"This was such a preventable death," said attorney Benjamin Crump, representing DJ Searcy's parents. "It never should've happened."
Doug Evans was at the presser...
"My question to the coaches is why didn't you call 911 on Monday night and notify me when he first went down unconscious and unresponsive," DJ's mother, Michelle Searcy, said.
The Searcy's are calling for an investigation by the Georgia High School Association as to what the Fitzgerald coaches knew and when they knew it...
FOSG Shayne Wright caught up with the Executive Director of the GHSA, Dr. Ralph Swearngin to ask about the heat policies over the weekend...

OSG High: Georgia Coaching Legend Luther Welsh Passes

Georgia high school head coaching legend Luther Welsh passed away Thursday morning...
Welsh was a head coach in the state since 1955 and continuously since 1968 at Dougherty, Camden County, Greene County, Screven County, and two terms at Thomson High School in suburban Augusta. He was head coach of the Bulldogs for 19 years and three titles to go with ten region titles.
Brent Buffington talked to those who Welsh touched most...
The following is an excerpt from a book the HQ has just finished...
"Georgia High School Football: Peach State Pigskin History"
On the field, changes took place all over, starting in Thomson with the retirement of Luther Welsh. Coach Welsh conquered lymphoma in the past decade, but succumbed to the disease in July of 2011. Both he and his wife, Anne, were facing battles with the disease, and at the end of the 2010 season decided that it was time for him to return home to Bishopville, South Carolina, and leave the coaching to another.
Anne had half of a lung removed in September 2010 as part of her battle and she passed almost a week before he did. Coach Welsh traveled to Augusta for his own treatments for cancer. The couple, who would have been married fifty years in September of 2011, were looking to enjoy their time at home. “The devil is trying to get us,” Anne told the Augusta Chronicle’s Scott Michaux after she fell and broke her hip during her own recovery in 2010.
The new Bulldogs coach comes from the town of Twin City, otherwise known as “Greymont-Summit.” Milan Turner won a Class A title at ECI with Georgia tailback Washaun Ealey in 2007, and he understands his new place—having been chosen over one hundred other applicants.
“You don’t replace a Coach Welsh,” Turner said after his unanimous confirmation by the McDuffie County School Board in February. “He leaves a legacy that will stand. It’s a great honor to follow a coaching legend like Luther Welsh. I understand the expectations. I understand the tradition.”
Welsh passes on having coached his way into the top eight on the all-time national list of most games coached. Welsh coached 507 games with eleven different schools, winning 329 of them. His record at Thomson was 174-47-2 with the Bulldogs, and his overall record was 333-181-6.
The book is set to be released in late August through The History Press...

OSG High: Jeremy Williams Resigns

The HQ received a bit of sad news last night...
We have covered the story of Greenville ((GA)) High School head football coach/Athletics Director Jeremy Williams and his fight with ALS- Lou Gehrig's Disease. The amazing attitude of Jeremy, his high school sweetheart and wife Jennifer, and his kids Josie and Jacob has been well-documented here.
Jeremy has decided to resign from his post at Greenville High as he battles the disease and focus on what he termed in his text message to us "his new adventure."
What the Williams family has been able to show us is a great lesson of perseverance, love, understanding, and faith that is not being forgotten by everyone that they touch as we all move forward.
We just wanted to tip our hat to Jeremy, the Williams family, and to Greenville...
We're thinking about you...

Rebuilding Ringgold...

It’s random, but at the same time, systematic…
It’s cruel and uncaring- like the idea that anything Mother Nature would put in our way would be handled with care…
The same person who makes sure that sunrise and sunset are two of the most beautiful parts of the day can also make sure that you know what is beautiful can also be hard to handle and, regrettably, deadly.
We always have this vision of Mother Nature, from the days of those Chiffon margarine commercials from the past…
And, I know, I just dated myself…

So, what happens when her fury is thrust upon you and you have no choice…???
Ask the folks of Ringgold…
A lot of us have seen what the damage has been in Alabama, but right here close to home, it’s just as bad…
You ask anyone and the sky went from purple to black and everyone tried to hide. But even if you hide and make it from one side to the other, you’re still stuck with what’s left. Mark Harmon, Shane Keating, and myself went to Ringgold to see first-hand how the town is coping with rebuilding- not just the physical, but the mental and emotional aspects of that word… “rebuilding…”
Two weeks after the fact, it still looked an unhappy child was ready to start over with his or her set of Lincoln Logs and smashed the work to pieces…
Driving up Interstate 75, the town of Ringgold (population 3,000) has access from three exits- 345, 348, and 350…
The first one and the last one were fine… the middle was where a tornado, probably 500 yards wide at some points came screaming down the Alabama Highway from west to east.
And it didn’t play favorites…
It didn’t matter if you owned a gas station, a convenience store, a restaurant, a hotel, or a car dealership. It didn’t matter if you owned, rented, leased, or borrowed. Your personal possessions were in the crosshairs or something very angry with a singular purpose… But at the intersection of Alabama Highway and Main Street, it stopped in one place, reinvented itself, made a right turn and picked up speed and momentum and decided that the subdivision that cradled Ringgold High School and Ringgold Middle School would be the new path. And the part of the tornado that stopped at Main Street would meet the other half at the school grounds… hopping over Main Street itself…
Graciously, head football coach and Athletics Director Robert Akins and Assistant Principal Kyra Rhyne allowed us to tour the grounds with them and see what this tornado did to people’s livelihoods, and their lives, as the Tiger family lost two students on that night as they were with their families: a wrestler and a National Honor Society inductee.
You could tell the rotation of the tornado and what it did along the way…

There is a nine-minute tour that the four of us took... that video is here...
It's raw tape, so you may see some things that aren't quite edited-for-television...
But, after the tour, we were left to our own devices… having seen the track the unwanted party guest took to enter the city and followed it up the mountain side where it picked up momentum all over again…
The four block subdivision that caught everything full force was just as randomly jumbled as everything else we had seen… and this was two weeks after the fact...
Homes were either rendered unlivable, or outright destroyed, but some were untouched showing only trees that were turned into obstacles in driveways. The Mt. Peria Baptist Church seemed to symbolize the whole night as one of their travel vans was right-side up and it’s companion was upside-down. Its front canopy and roof had collapsed while some of the church possessions ended up 20 feet up in a nearby tree. But the most sobering moment of the whole trip was on that same street when a woman who was helping another clean up the remains of a life fully-invested asked me:
“Do you know what street this is…?”
Had there been a street sign up, I probably could have recalled it… but those didn’t exist anymore, either…
“Sorry, I wish I knew,” was all I could come up with…
To say it impacted the three of us is a severe understatement…
I have had to worry about people I love in these situations before as we were miles apart and you couldn’t do anything but be supportive over a phone line from hours away. But now having seen what Mother Nature can do close up, you always remember how she impacted others. The high school, they say, may be ready for classes by the end of July. The middle schoolers will move next door, probably, until their new school is built. And that may be for the best so the younger ones can share their thoughts and feelings with the older kids…
They’ll need to…
And while the schools can be rebuilt by insurance, there are a lot of things that can’t be recovered that way… “everything” athletic is the easiest way to say it…
The baseball team was able to salvage some uniforms for their playoff run that took them to a third game in the second round with perennial powerhouse Columbus High, but everything else is still being figured out. The football team is practicing over at Heritage High with the spring game scheduled for this Saturday morning against the Generals and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The proceeds are all going to Ringgold and their rebuilding…
If you can’t make it, a fund has been set up to help Ringgold High and Ringgold Middle…

OSG High: Schools Have To Cease And Desist With "Seminoles" Logo

The HQ figured that this would start happening sooner or later...
Colleges and universities are, after all, big business and that includes all their marketing, licensing, and logo-based revenues. When you go to your favorite high school games, the logo your favorite school has may be amazingly similar to one at the collegiate or professional level...
Once again, not a surprise...
But now, the blanket use of the logo and nickname may be curtailed by a huge margin after Collegiate Licensing Company sent out a cease and desist letter to an Atlanta-area school district on behalf of Florida State University.
Rockdale County's School System's letter from CLC says that the appearance of the Seminole spear logo on their helmets "may cause consumers to erroneously believe that the university has authorized Salem High School to use its marks. Additionally, it will dilute the distinctiveness of the marks that the public associates with the university."
Notice CLC didn't use the word "fan." They used the word "consumer."
And to be perfectly honest, people may not give a tinker's damn about where the logo came from. There may be a fleeting thought about its origins and a just-as-instant association, but since they're a part of the fabric of these communities, the thought about the logo and its origins is now more a thought than previously ever.
Betcha... and its only brought out by the C&D order.
Now the school system, already looking at a deficit has to remove logos and other elements from every piece of work associated with the logo by August 1- just in time for football season. The school system accepted a settlement offer from CLC. It lets Salem High School and/or Memorial Middle School keep the name, but they have to ditch the Indian head and spear associated with, collegiately, FSU...
There are a handful of other schools within the state of Georgia that have to switch out as well. No word on whether they're taking the settlement or challenging in court.
Whaddya wanna bet they all switch to Gators or 'Canes...???

Youth FB Coach Posts Slurs On Facebook Page, Upheaval Commences...

The Brookwood Broncos won their first state title since 1996 last Saturday night- defeating a Rush Propst-coached Colquitt County squad 52-38.
By the way, watch it hyah... thanks to our friends at Georgia Public Broadcasting...
The secret to most programs is a feeder system. You start kids running the offenses and defenses when they're, like, four. And, by the time they're in high school they've got it down...
Frank Samuelson is a coach on the 5th-grade level for the program, and he, apparently, posted some rather bigoted words and phrases on his Facebook page.
Like this one, thanks to our friends at the AJC:
"I was dining in an Asian buffet today [big surpise], and I heard this morning how Asian students are suppodely so much smarter than American kids. My personal observation is that those fishheads still eat with chopsticks. It took Western ingenuity to invent the fork. I'm just saying. ... they a'int that friggin' smart."
Parents are, understandably, in complete and total incredulity and a meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening in the neighborhood. Opinions, while incredulous, are somewhat divided as to what to think of the psts.
Samuelson has apologized and hired an attorney:
“Is it in poor taste? Sure. But it was not intended to be printed out and break laws by sticking it on other people’s windshields.”

OSG High: Could Rush Propst Win A State Title In Another State...?

When Hoover High ((AL)) head football coach Rush Propst was asked to resign from his post three years ago after revelation after revelation after allegation and allegation about two separate lives in the state of Alabama, Colquitt County ((GA)) High School took a flyer on him.
All he's done is take his team to the GHSA state semi-finals twice, and now he's one win a way from a state title in a second state...

Mercer University Wants Football, Too...

Mercer University plans to re-start its football program in 2013 for the first time in 70 years.
School officials announced the plans Friday and university board chairman Homer Drake says that the decision came after more than two years of study and discussion.
Mercer President Bill Underwood says the university is seeking membership in the Pioneer Football League, a football-only conference. Underwood said reviving the school's football program will enhance Mercer's academic reputation and help the school attract "the most sought-after students."
The school has not competed in football since 1941, but has a football tradition stretching back to 1892.
Now, all they have to worry about is getting run up on by Jacksonville University and their coach Kerwin Bell- who, since he couldn't get any offense down as a pro, is now putting up 80-plus on his opponents.

NWLC Sues School Systems Over Title IX

The National Women's Law Center has filed complaints against 12 school districts around the country, including Henry County ((GA)) Schools, alleging they are violating Title IX law by failing to offer equal opportunities for female athletes.
The group says in Henry County Schools, specifically, there is a 12.5 percent gap ((one to eight ratio)) between the percentage of girls enrolled and the girls who are athletes.
According to the NWLC, that translates to 430 fewer opportunities for girls to play sports than boys in this particular instance. In an article by FOSG and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Michael Carvell, the NWLC claims those numbers grew worse between 2004 and 2006.
FOSG Ken Rodriguez caught up with a legendary Georgia high school wrestling coach, Cliff Ramos, and Georgia Tech women's hoops head coach Machelle Joseph to ask if they think Title IX is working...

OSG High: Alabama, Georgia Schools Both Facing Player Suspensions

Georgia high school history was set last Friday night, but for the wrong reason.
In the Seminole County ((GA))- Daleville ((AL)) game, a fight broke out in the third quarter with Daleville on top 28-13. All but nine Seminole players were suspended, rendering their game with Mitchell County ((GA)) a forfeit since they won't have enough warm bodies to play.
Daleville got off a little easier: a $2500 fine and eleven two-game suspensions.
Brad Sherwood has the Alabama version...
Here's the entire statement from the AHSAA's Andrew Kelley... “This morning we received notice from the Alabama High School Athletic Association concerning fines and sanctions imposed for the altercation that occurred during the Daleville/Seminole County football game last Friday night. Daleville High School cooperated with the AHSAA, agree with the sanctions imposed and deeply regret that the altercation occurred. Fines against Daleville will total $2,500 and a number of our players will be suspended for 2 games. Good sportsmanship is something we pride ourselves in at Daleville and we will not allow unsportsmanlike conduct to go unpunished. This was an unfortunate event for both schools and we sincerely hope that the young men involved will learn from their mistakes.”

FOSG Chip Towers caught up with White County ((GA)) tailback Ashely Lowery about the play in display...
“I thought he was going to cut me because I had run him over earlier in the game,” said Lowery, not surprisingly a high jumper and hurdler on the track team. “I didn’t feel like getting my knees hurt, so I just jumped.”
Despite the score, Lowery was flagged. It's illegal to hurdle a defender...???
Lowery is heading to Kentucky next season. He talked to them after the play hit the Internets...

Talles Cardoso had never seen an oblong version of football until August 1st of this year when he was introduced to American football in the east Georgia town of Thomson ((about a half-hour west of Augusta)).
But when you kick the game-winner as the new kid on the block, business picks up for you a little bit...

ALabama HS Coach Denies Wrongdoing, Propst Backs Him
Spain Park ((AL)) High School head football coach David Shores issued a statement Friday regarding an incident between himself and a player during practice this past Tuesday. Shores was placed on administrative leave while the school board investigates.
"I am saddened, shocked, and disappointed by the handling of the entire situation," Shores said in the statement. "A student-athlete on my team lost his cool and attacked me during a physical football drill at practice on Tuesday. I did not retaliate or otherwise fight back."
Shores said other coaches had to pull the student off him. He also said he is willing to meet with the player and his family to work through the issue.
This gave every Birmingham television station the chance to try and track down any ((what they thought would be)) pertinent sound on the issue...

Some elements of the HQ were in Hogansville, Georgia for their last scrimmage of the season against Callaway High School a week ago...
They ran three whole plays in the second half and lost 27-14...

Priest Wants Demon Mascot Exorcised From School

Pastor Donald Crosby moved to the Warner Robins ((GA)) High School district a year ago. He is in charge of the Kingdom Builders Church of Jesus Christ in the middle Georgia town.
When he found out his ninth-grader was set to become a "Demon," Crosby has gone on his own crusade to change the mascot name and the 60-years of tradition that goes with it.
He's gathering names for a petition and is even going as far as trying to transfer his son from Warner Robins High to another school in the county. His choices would be either the Eagles, the Warhawks, or the Bears. But that's if the school board allows the transfer on some-kind of religious grounds.
And the HQ is, admittedly, stretching here...

The HQ has trumpeted Greenville ((GA)) High School Jeremy Williams and his family as those we should all look up to as they fight ALS ((Lou Gehrig's disease)) with dignity and grace.
Here's part of their special episode of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

Rightfully so, Jeremy can now add another couple of lines to his resume: National High School Coaches Association "Coach of the Year" for the sport of football- the year after John McKissick from Summerville ((SC)) High School got the award.

Williams Family "Move That Bus" Update...
The season finale of the ABC television series "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" aired Sunday night with Greenville ((GA)) High School Head Coach Jeremy Williams and his family as the focus...
