OSG High: Gulf Coast HS Remembers Fallen Teammate

Last Friday night, D'Iberville ((MS)) high running back Fred Dunbar died after collapsing on the field during their game with Gauthier ((MS)) High. Dunbar was taken from the field during the game and the coaching staff gave his teammates the choice of postponing or playing...
They played, played from behind, and eventually won... as it was later disclosed that Dunbar died of a cardiac episode...

OSG High: Indiana WR Sets National Yards Record

Coming into this week's games, South Bend ((IN))-Washington High WR Gehrig Deiter had the top spot for receiving yards by almost 270 total yards.
Deiter expanded those numbers with, what looks like, the new national record for yards in a game with 447 yards in a 63-10 win over Elkhart-Central.
Dieter broke the 2008 mark of 421 yards set by J.D. Felice of Rose Bud ((AR)) in a game against England High.
In Washington's season opener, Dieter broke the Indiana state record with 373 receiving yards- 8th highest on the national list.

OSG High: Virginia Mom Speaking Out Against Concussions

Austin Trenum committed suicide two days after suffering a concussion during a high school football game in northern Virginia nearly a year ago. He ran the ball three times for a total of three yards in a 48-14 loss. Two days later, he was found dead in his bedroom...
Maureen Umeh had the story back then...
Now his parents are speaking out. Austin's parents donated their son's brain for research, and doctors found that Austin's brain had "structural damage" during the examination. One of the doctors says he thinks it's "more likely that not" the suicide was a result of the concussion.
Austin's father, Gil, is a member of the local school board in Prince William County, Maryland. He is working to put new guidelines in place at the county's schools for all athletes- not just football players. Austin's mom and dad are maintaining that "getting your bell rung" shouldn't be seen as something cool anymore...

OSG High: If You Can't Beat Em, Join Em...

This is the first time that the HQ can remember something like this ever going down...
Lincoln County ((GA)) High School's Red Devils are coached by Larry Campbell. Coach Campbell has been around as head coach since 1972 and is 7th in the nation in career wins.
Garrison Hearst...??? Played under Campbell... the list of stars for all of Campbell's Class A state titles is huge, and when you see what can happen if you play under Campbell- you want to chase the bright lights.
Harlem High lost to LCHS 69-6 last weekend...
Their star running back, sophomore Mike McIntyre, after grinding out 60 yards in the loss transferred to Lincoln County...
McIntyre's eligibility is currently in question and evaluation by the Georgia High School Association and Coach Campbell has held McIntyre out of practice until he gets a final ruling...
Interesting case study... and Coach Campbell don't play...

OSG High: 4 NJ Teens Killed In Car Crash

Four teens that play football for Mainland Regional high School in Linwood, New Jersey were remembered at their football stadium as a vigil was held to recall the lives lost when the van they were travelling in lost control on a highway. The teens were part of the team caravan heading to a team meal over the weekend.
a day after four high school football players were killed and four were injured when their SUV crashed on Garden State Parkway on their way to have brunch with some teammates.
Students, parents, community members, and football team players donned in game jerseys turned out to mourn their loss. Some of the survivors in the crash were among the more than 3,000 in attendance.
Photos of the four teens killed in the crash were placed at the center of the football field...

Sgt. Julian Castellanos, a New Jersey state police spokesman, said the driver, 17-year-old Casey Brenner, apparently lost control of the vehicle as it went around a crest on the parkway and came upon heavy traffic.
The vehicle overturned several times, ejecting two passengers, one of whom was struck by a passing car, Castellanos said.
The team's first game is scheduled for September 9, three days before the school year begins.

OSG High: Long Losing Streak Over
Green Hope High School in Cary, N.C. has been mired in a 38 game losing streak, the longest such streak in North Carolina, until Friday night.
The Falcons opened their season snapping breaking the drought defeating Smithfield-Selma 38-0.

OSG High: Another HS Death, This Time In Arkansas

The HQ thinks that this is the fifth death during the early parts of pre-season practice this high school football season...
This time, it's in Arkansas...
Gurdon ((AR)) High School sophomore Montel Williams collapsed at football practice and later died. Head football coach John Pace says Williams fell to one knee after a series of wind sprints during practice Tuesday night.
Preliminary autopsy results should be available tomorrow. Investigators are keeping an open mind and are looking into whether heat exhaustion or an undiagnosed medical condition could have played a role in Williams death.
Coach John Pace says the team will dedicate its season to Williams and try to get through this tragedy together. "They're all in shock, kind of like we all are." Pace says, "Only time will help that."
Gurdon students go back to school on Monday, and grief counselors will be made available to Williams's friends and fellow students...

OSG High: NC Teen With Down's Syndrome Too Old To Play...???

There's nothing like high school football to get everyone in a small town riled up over what is a perceived wrong...
Brett Bowden recently turned 19, and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association says he is no longer eligible to suit up for his Hobbton High team because he is too old. Allowing him to do so, Hobbton High athletics administrators say, is a violation of state rules.
Bowden suffers from Down's Syndrome and has been on the sidelines for his team for the last two seasons- suiting up in full pads. But he can't do that anymore...
And being a part of the team has been well-meaning for Brett and his teammates...

Authorities are investigating the death of a 14-year-old South Carolina high school football player who collapsed following a weekend morning practice. Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee said Tyquan Xavier Brantley, a freshman at Lamar High School, died at hospital late Saturday.
Hardee says tests are being conducted to determine if the death was heat related or from another cause. The heat Saturday afternoon rose to 101 degrees, a near-record, according to the National Weather Service.
"We are heartbroken at this terrible tragedy," Dr. Rainey Knight, superintendent of the school district, said, according to the Florence Morning News.
Darlington County School District spokeswoman Audrey Childers said it was the team's second day of light practice in helmets but no pads. Brantley was walking off the field when he started to complain about cramps and then collapsed. Childers said players were on the field about an hour and got a five-minute water break every 20 minutes.
She said the team resumes practice Monday night after taking Sunday off.

OSG High: Orlando-Dr. Phillips Loses 2010 Season

Defensive Coordinator Rodney Wells takes over for Dale Salapa at Orlando-Doctor Phillips. Normally, that would be news on its own, but replacing the coach that had a three-year record of 35-4 is because Salapa stepped aside after a boatload of trouble came to the surface...
Last week, Dr. Phillips self-reported to the Florida High School Athletic Association ((FHSAA)) that it had an ineligible player on its roster and is forfeiting all 14 victories from the 2010 season. Last month, three former Dr. Phillips players were acquitted of charges of battery and hazing a former teammate last September.
"There will be a zero-tolerance policy," Wells told Joe Williams of the Orlando Sentinel. "Everything has to be clean. Everybody will be watching us, not just at school but in the community."
Wells ain't lying...

OSG High: Summer 7-On-7 Brawl

The summer yields itself to camps out in the woods, hooking up with other schools for games every now and then, getting up early for weight training, drills, and the like...
We can now add a big brawl to the mix in Baton Rouge...
Woodlawn and Plaquemine lasted 20 minutes before the following...
It took a few minutes to restore order and get the teams to neutral corners, and the game was left at the point it was when the fists started flying. There was a little chippiness that led to all the angst...
No word on any discipline from the LHSAA at present...

OSG High: NY HS FB Star Stabbed Day After Graduation

Isayah Muller had graduated from Harry S Truman High School a few hours before he was killed Tuesday. Muller, his father, mother and girlfriend had left the commencement exercises when Isayah's father, Andre, noticed that some cologne -- a graduation gift-- was missing from his car.
The Mullers drove back to the parking lot to confront the attendants whom he thought had stolen the cologne when a fight broke out, according to the NYPD. Isayah was stabbed in the chest during the fight.
The elder Muller was arrested and faces charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon. The parking lot attendants were brought in for questioning by police Tuesday night, but no charges have been filed against them.

OSG High DEVELOPING: AZ Forest Fire Threatening HS Venues

This has been a year that the HQ has reported on a lot of meteorological stuff- more than we care to talk about... too many lives lost in the entirety, but the whole impact in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, and now Arizona is immeasurable.
The Wallow Fire has grown to become Arizona's second-largest wildfire in history and as of Tuesday, stood at more than 389,000 acres. Air and ground crews are currently battling the fire with no containment. The 608 square miles that the fire currently owns is larger than Phoenix itself...
If the fire continues on its path toward New Mexico, through the towns of Springerville and Eagar, it could endanger the site of the The Round Valley Ensphere. The Ensphere is the only high school domed football stadium in the United States. A multiuse facility on the campus of the Round Valley High School, the Ensphere is located in the town of Eagar.

OSG High: 4 Joplin Schools Complete Losses

It seems we're doing a lot of this for the spring and summer...
You've seen all the damage done by the tornado that took out at least 75-percent of the town of Joplin. Over 100 are known dead, some are still missing, and now another town has to pick up and start over...
A press conference took place today to explain the scope of the damage from an academic stand-point...
Superintendent CJ Huff gets to share the bad news...
Obviously, there are no classes planned for the rest of the intended school year...
But the goal to rebuild is a great task and one Joplin plans to take on full bore.

OSG High: So THAT'S What It's Like To Work With Will Ferrell

In Will Ferrell's new movie, "Evereything Must Go," Ferrell plays a guy whose life bottoms out- including the idea that his wife has thrown all of his belongings out in what used to be his front yard...
He decides to live there...
One scene involves a confrontation with his character and two high schoolers...
Played by, shockingly, two Arizona high school football players who listened to the junior varsity head coach at their school...

"Frontline" Hits Another Homerun With High School Football

"Frontline" is required viewing most of the time...
It just so happens that, in the last month, they've dipped their toes in the sports pool and have done some quality reporting...
The first was an expose on The Politics of Dancing and their new one is about high school athletics and how football has a life of its own when it comes to getting athletes to the next level.
