Tayshana "Chicken" Murphy was a top-20 guard in high school recruiting circles in the country and was showcasing her abilities out of the Harlem projects.
At a little after 4AM, she was shot and killed as she was apparently mistaken for a boy who had gotten into a fight with boys from a neighboring housing project.
According to witnesses, Murphy was pleading for her life with the shooter claiming she had nothing to do with what happened. The shooter is still on the loose and is being sought after by the NYPD...

Former NBA'er Kenny Anderson takes job coaching Jewish school

Former NBA all-star Kenny Anderson has found a full-time coaching gig. At a Davie, Florida Jewish High School.
Really.
Anderson apparently lives down the road and has been looking for work as a coach for some time. He briefly coached a minor league basketball team in Atlanta. He was told he needed a degree to get a job. He got it. There were rumblings he would end up on the staff at the University of Miami, but that never happened.
So he took a job coaching the Posnack Jewish Day School basketball team. Posnack is a small 1-A school that isn't exactly known for hoops. He apparently got the job after talking to a school parent on Twitter.

We say good for Kenny. We got to know him when he was coaching the minor league team in Atlanta and he was doing some basketball analysis work. He's a really good guy who wants nothing more than to teach and be a successful coach.
He was an all-everything college basketball player at Georgia Tech and had a solid 15-year career in the NBA. According to this story, he took the job in part because it was a chance to prove he can make a team better with coaching.
We applaud him. And we'll try and keep up with how he does. If he can make the Posnack school a High School power, he'll prove he can do anything.

OSG High: Michigan Recruit Involved In Second Plane Crash

Ten days ago, Indiana high school basketball star Austin Hatch declared to play for the University of Michigan. Now, he is hospitalized in critical condition after a plane crash that killed his father and step-mother. Sadly and ironically, Hatch and his dad survived another crash in 2003 that killed his mother and two siblings.
"We are saddened to hear about another tragedy that has affected the Hatch family," Michigan coach John Beilein said in a statement. "Austin needs as much support right now as possible and I know he will be in the thoughts and prayers of the Michigan family during this difficult time."
His father received a private pilot certificate in 1997, according to the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. The single-engine aircraft he was piloting, with three passengers, crashed into a garage Friday night in the Michigan town of Charlevoix.
Hatch is currently in a medically-induced coma...

OSG High DEVELOPING: AZ Forest Fire Threatening HS Venues

This has been a year that the HQ has reported on a lot of meteorological stuff- more than we care to talk about... too many lives lost in the entirety, but the whole impact in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, and now Arizona is immeasurable.
The Wallow Fire has grown to become Arizona's second-largest wildfire in history and as of Tuesday, stood at more than 389,000 acres. Air and ground crews are currently battling the fire with no containment. The 608 square miles that the fire currently owns is larger than Phoenix itself...
If the fire continues on its path toward New Mexico, through the towns of Springerville and Eagar, it could endanger the site of the The Round Valley Ensphere. The Ensphere is the only high school domed football stadium in the United States. A multiuse facility on the campus of the Round Valley High School, the Ensphere is located in the town of Eagar.

OSG High: 4 Joplin Schools Complete Losses

It seems we're doing a lot of this for the spring and summer...
You've seen all the damage done by the tornado that took out at least 75-percent of the town of Joplin. Over 100 are known dead, some are still missing, and now another town has to pick up and start over...
A press conference took place today to explain the scope of the damage from an academic stand-point...
Superintendent CJ Huff gets to share the bad news...
Obviously, there are no classes planned for the rest of the intended school year...
But the goal to rebuild is a great task and one Joplin plans to take on full bore.

Here's the first one... it's a half-courter by Indianapolis/Metro High's Jerrbryon Graves for a game winner to knock off Shawe Memorial to win the Martinsville Regional
And the other one, from closer in...
Kokomo's LaBradford Sebree does it from the corner in double overtime to defeat Pendleton Heights to win the Marion Regional.
Ain't this time of the year awesome...???

OSG High: Fennville's Run Comes To A Close

Eleven days after the death of star player Wes Leonard, Fennville ((MI)) High's post-season run comes to a close as Schoolcraft ((MI)) won 86-62 in the western Michigan town of Vicksburg.
"It's been nice to have basketball to keep your mind off stuff," Fennville coach Ryan Klingler said. "But if anybody can handle it tomorrow, it will be our guys."

OSG High: Fennville Wins Region, 3rd Since Leonard Death

The Fennville ((MI)) High boys basketball team came back from a 10-point deficit to win a district championship and their third consecutive playoff game since the death of their star player, Wes Leonard.
The Blackhawks beat Covert ((MI)) High, 51-48 on Friday night to earn a Class C district title. Fennville is 23-0.
It was the third game since the death of Leonard, who collapsed shortly after scoring the game-winning basket on March 3.
Fennville was led by Pete Alfaro had 16 points.

OSG High: The Funeral For Wes Leonard
Hundreds of people attended the funeral for Fennville ((MI)) High basketball star Wes Leonard at a western Michigan.
A clergyman welcomed mourners with an opening prayer at Christ Memorial Church in the town of Holland. Orange flowers were ever-present at the service as a marker for Fennville's colors.
Leonard died of an enlarged heart last Thursday after his overtime basket kept the Blackhawks undefeated heading into the Michigan state playoffs. The team won their opening-round playoff game Monday night in front of 3,500 fans.
A bus carrying more than 70 students from the neighboring Gobles and Bloomingdale ((MI)) districts arrived at the funeral to show support for their friends from Fennville.

DEVELOPING: OSG High: Fennville Wins First Game Back

Fennville ((MI)) High won their first game since their star player collapsed after scoring the winning basket to give his team a perfect regular-season record back on Thursday.
Nearly 3,500 fans observed a moment of silence for Fenville's Wes Leonard before the tipoff of their state tournament game between Fennville and Lawrence high schools- schools who know players and have friends on both sides of the floor.
Fennville won 65-54 and improve to 21-0. Players from both high school teams wore warm-up shirts paying tribute to Leonard. The game was moved to the Hope College arena in the nearby town of Holland to accommodate the crowd that was anticipated for the game Monday.

OSG High: Michigan Hoops Player Hits Winning Shot And Dies On Court...

Wes Leonard was a junior at Fennville ((MI)) High School- outside of Grand Rapids. He hit the game-winning layup in overtime last night giving his Blackhawks a perfect 20-0 season. He collapsed on the court after the game, and later died at a local Hospital. His cause of death is unknown and is currently under investigation.
A parent at the game, who has a job as an EMT, started performing CPR on Leonard as soon as he collapsed. Emergency responders arrived and spent another hour and 20 minutes performing CPR when he arrived at the hospital.
He was also the school's starting quarterback...

What if a high school coach uses bad language to try and fire up and/or influence his kids to play...???
It seems to be happening in Ohio and the parents of the students on the team are mad enough that they're trying to get the coach that got the team to a 15-0 start removed... post haste, if not sooner...
The parents wrote the school board and the letter is hyah and hyah, too...

OSG High: Hurley Gets 1,000th Win

The HQ just thought this would be a cool mention...
Bob Hurley, Senior who has been coaching at St. Anthony ((NJ)) High School for the past 39 years, became the 10th high school boys basketball coach to ever get his 1,000th win. His Friars defeated St. Mary's ((NJ)) High 76-46, and his career record stands at 1,000-110.
"I'm somewhat of a historian," he said. Hurley became just the third high school coach ever to be inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame last year.
"It's a very difficult number to get to. You have to do this for a long time and be pretty good at it. And have an awful lot of help along the way. It's an incredible accomplishment. We're very proud of this."

OSG High: Louisiana HS Hoops Refs Taking The Night Off...

Some Louisiana high school basketball referees are taking an unscheduled night off in protest of a recent vote against a pay hike.
Officials in the New Orleans area are thinking the same thing...
Basketball officials in the state are the lowest paid in the country and have had only one raise in the past 21 years.

The winners couldn't pull all of their starters and the losing team, a high school for at-risk youth, couldn't match up from the beginning...

Chandler HS Coach Battling CF
Seton Catholic's ((AZ)) assistant basketball coach, Tiffany Tate, has had to battle cystic fibrosis since birth, but that never kept her from being a star athlete at Chandler ((AZ)) High School.
She had to stop after high school, but that love for sport evolved into a coaching career. Over time, her lung capacity has decreased to 25-percent and she is on a list for a lung transplant.
Every December, friends and supporters alike have held a two-day fund raiser for her to defray her costs...
