The Big 10 Has A New Logo And Divided Into Leaders And Legends

The mathematically challenged Big Ten Conference, which will have 12 teams next year, unveiled the conferences new logo Monday.

It's a nice looking logo, simple and well done.

"Its contemporary collegiate lettering includes an embedded numeral "10" in the word "BIG," which allows fans to see "BIG" and "10" in a single word." Michael Gericke said who along with Michael Bierut of the international design firm Pentagram designed the Big Ten's new logo. "Memorable and distinctive, the new logo evolved from the previous logo's use of negative space and is built on the conference's iconic name, without reference to the number of member institutions."

Which is 12, two more than 10.

Big Ten commish Jim Delany gave it a thumps up.

"We think the new logo is fun and has something for everyone." Delany said in a release from the Big Ten Conference.

It's a logo, it has nothing for me.

Is it me or is their something subliminal about the "I" and "G" in "BIG"? Kind of looks like the number 16. Is that the number the 10/12 ultimately wants?

The new division names are far more confusing that what the ACC concocted five years ago.

The division names are the "Leaders" and "Legends".

"'Legends' is a nod to our history and to the people associated with our schools who are widely recognized as legends - student-athletes, coaches, alumni and faculty." The Big Ten commish Delany said. "'Leaders' looks to the future as we remain committed to fostering leaders, the student-athletes who are encouraged to lead in their own way for the rest of their lives, in their families, in their communities and in their chosen professions,"

Here's the breakdown:

LEGENDS: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern

LEADERS: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin

Next a new fancy name for the Big Ten Championship Game. How about the "Dozen Bowl" since you refuse to acknowledge their is 12 teams in your conference.

Branding is everything.

Hoosier Coach? How About Kevin Wilson

Indiana is set to introduce Oklahoma offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson as the new head coach of the Hoosiers. http://www.heraldtimesonline.com/stories/2010/12/07/iusports.730816.sto

Wilson has been on the OU staff since 2002 and the O.C. 2006. In 2008 Wilson won the Frank Broyles Award as the assistant coach of the year.

Those of us at the OSG HQ wish Wilson all the luck in the world in turning a perennial Big 10 doormat into a winning program, or at least bowl eligibility.

Buckeyes Blacken Hooiser Eyes, Poised To Be #1

Terrell Pryor made his bold move in the Heisman Trophy race throwing for a career high 334 yards and three touchdowns in Ohio State's 38-10 pummelling of Indiana.

Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel reached a milestone, the sweater recorded win number 100 as the Buckeyes head coach.

Bobby Knight doesn't want your money!

Hey look ESPN reporting a story on one of its own, which by the way we never thought we'd be saying about Bobby Knight. But anyway, according to the 4-letter word and others, Knight is refusing a $75,000 settlement check from alumni donations to settle the lawsuit that he filed against Indiana University. His statement was released by his friends in Bristol

This really isn't a big deal to a whole lot of people, it's just kind of funny in a Bobby Knight kind of way. His point is that his "Beef" is with the school, not the alumni and that he "Never took anything from the alumni before and won't now". That part we kind of respect. Really though, the main reason we post this is because it gives us another opportunity to show the always entertaining videos of Knight in his heyday...the late 70's and early 80's...

Knight to U of Indiana Hall of Fame

Maybe Indiana and Bobby Knight have kissed and made up. It seems as though Mr. Knight is going to be inducted into the University of Indiana's Hall of Fame. Knight, who won a couple of National Championships at IU, didn't exactly leave the school on the best of terms. Over the past several years, he has taken more than a few shots at the school and the administration and to the school's credit, they have stayed pretty quiet. The real fun will be to see if he actually shows up to receive the honor.

The ceremony will take place November 6th and Knight is expected to be honored along with seven others. The move is seen as being somewhat of an olive branch to the "Always Volatile One" and it should be interesting to see how it plays out. Knight still remains immensely popular in the Hoosier state and no doubt should he decide to show, it will be one hell of a day or weekend to remember.

Raise The Champagne Glasses Indiana, No More Unbeatens

Now that Wake Forest lost Wednesday night to Virginia Tech for the Demon Deacons first loss of the year, the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers remain the last NCAA Division one men's basketball team to go through an entire season undefeated.

7 teams have cut the nets at the end of the season with a zero in the loss column, UCLA did it 4 times during the John Wooden era (1964, 1967, 1972, 1973) but the Hoosiers of '76 were the last.

You wonder if it's a big deal to that team like it is every year in the NFL with the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Does Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Scott May and the rest raise a glass of champagne?

That '76 Indiana team was awesome. Scott May won National Player of the Year honors. In the National Final against Michigan, May helped in a big way scoring 26 points as the Hoosiers took home the NCAA title. 29 year later May would watch his son Sean win an NCAA Championship with North Carolina.

Kent Benson, the burly 6-11 center, (Picture to right: Thanks AP) found his groove in the title game with 26 points capping off a great year and a great NCAA Tournament. Benson would receive Most Outstanding Player honors. The next year Benson would be the Big 10 player of the year and go on to a serviceable NBA career.

Come to think of it, no one from that Hoosier team became superstars in the NBA. The 1976 Indiana Hoosiers were a collection of great college players that became a great college team. This was before the shot clock and 3 point line came around. Purest will say it was when basketball was real. It was a much different game then.

Will another team run the table in Division I men's college basketball again? UNLV almost did it in 1991 losing to Duke in the '91 National Semifinal for the first time that season but that has been the closest.

With the shot clock and 3 point line, it's almost impossible for teams to protect their lead. Back in '76, a 10 point lead was almost to much to overcome. In today's game a trio of 3's has you down by a single point.

I'm not saying it's impossible but what Indiana did in 1976 won't happen again in my lifetime.
