The Big 10 Has A New Logo And Divided Into Leaders And Legends

The mathematically challenged Big Ten Conference, which will have 12 teams next year, unveiled the conferences new logo Monday.

It's a nice looking logo, simple and well done.

"Its contemporary collegiate lettering includes an embedded numeral "10" in the word "BIG," which allows fans to see "BIG" and "10" in a single word." Michael Gericke said who along with Michael Bierut of the international design firm Pentagram designed the Big Ten's new logo. "Memorable and distinctive, the new logo evolved from the previous logo's use of negative space and is built on the conference's iconic name, without reference to the number of member institutions."

Which is 12, two more than 10.

Big Ten commish Jim Delany gave it a thumps up.

"We think the new logo is fun and has something for everyone." Delany said in a release from the Big Ten Conference.

It's a logo, it has nothing for me.

Is it me or is their something subliminal about the "I" and "G" in "BIG"? Kind of looks like the number 16. Is that the number the 10/12 ultimately wants?

The new division names are far more confusing that what the ACC concocted five years ago.

The division names are the "Leaders" and "Legends".

"'Legends' is a nod to our history and to the people associated with our schools who are widely recognized as legends - student-athletes, coaches, alumni and faculty." The Big Ten commish Delany said. "'Leaders' looks to the future as we remain committed to fostering leaders, the student-athletes who are encouraged to lead in their own way for the rest of their lives, in their families, in their communities and in their chosen professions,"

Here's the breakdown:

LEGENDS: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern

LEADERS: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin

Next a new fancy name for the Big Ten Championship Game. How about the "Dozen Bowl" since you refuse to acknowledge their is 12 teams in your conference.

Branding is everything.

Penn State Adds Hockey For $88M Pricetag

Because of an $88-million gift from the Pegula family...

Yup... $88-million... the largest private gift in the university's history gets a new arena built... among other things...

Terry and Kim Pegula get to see things come to fruition for the 2012-2013 season.

Pegula is the founder and former president of East Resources, Incorporated that he sold to Royal Dutch Shell PLC for $4.7 billion.

That's not a misprint...

The addition of men's and women's ice hockey will increase the number of sports at Penn State to 31.

Penn State has had a club hockey team, the Icers, since 1971. The team plays at the campus' 1,500-seat Ice Pavilion and is considered one of the top club teams in the country- having won seven ACHA national titles.

The school also had a men's varsity team from 1939 to 1946. Penn State has had a women's club hockey team, the Lady Icers, since 1996-97.

Five other Big Ten schools play Division I hockey, but there is no Big Ten hockey conference. Minnesota and Wisconsin play in the WCHA. Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are in the CCHA. Both conferences want to add Penn State, but the school could be instrumental in the Big 10/11/12 going their own way...

"They are a very attractive choice -- very attractive," CCHA commissioner Tom Anastos said earlier this month, according to the Detroit News. "They're in a different market than we're in, more and more U.S. players are on college rosters, and there's tremendous growth of the sport in Pennsylvania."

Michael Zordich tries to drink the Happy Valley....

It appears as though Penn State football players Michael Zordich Jr. may have a problem. You see he's in trouble...for the second time...for doing bad things under the influence of alcohol.

Zordich is still only 20-years old and is picking up quite the reputation. He was, in September charged with DUI and underage drinking. Now, come reports that he was arrested again, this past Sunday and charged with underage drinking...again.

Zordich's father, who also played at Penn State was a 12-year veteran of the NFL and is currently working as a coaching intern with the Philadelphia Eagles.

No word at this point what the Fighting Joe Pa's plan to do with Zordich, who had stood out in the team's Spring Game, running for 2 TD's as the #2 Fullback.

TWTW: Was This The Real Terrelle Pryor...???

Terrelle Pryor has always been a college tease for an athlete...

He teased his announcement for where he was going to school after the official signing day period just so he could have the spotlight on national cable networks...

He's shown flashes of the athlete that OSU put all that, um, "faith" in by having him at quarterback. But in big games, he's always come up more than a little bit short on more than one occasion.

Not this last time...

He passed for two TD's and ran for another in the Buckeyes win over Penn State in Happy Valley- which, we think, wasn't so happy Saturday night after all...

"It was huge. They were making a big deal about it and people were doubting us, 'Buckeyes can't do this or this.' A lot of that stuff motivates us, but we knew we could do it," Pryor said.

For a change... and now they're in control of the Ten standings...

TWTW: Iowa Wins 7th Of Last 8 Against Penn State

Iowa slugged out an ugly win in soggy Happy Valley to upset Penn State for the second straight year.

Adrian Clayborn returned a block punt for a touchdown and the Hawkeyes beat mistake-prone No. 5 Penn State 21-10 on Saturday night.

A year after a stunning 24-23 win knocked the Nittany Lions out of the national title race, the Hawkeyes (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) took down Penn State (3-1, 0-1) again, this time in a drenching rainstorm.

"It was a team loss. No one person, or one play lost it," Penn State coach Joe Paterno said. "We got licked."

So Much For That Idea... State Penn Locked Up

A lot of people thought the Iowa-Penn State game was a trap for Joe Paterno and the rest of the Nittany Lions when they went in to Iowa City.

It was...

The only saving grace in the Penn State loss to the Hawkeyes is that he lost in the early part of November. The number one and two teams in the BCS are a collective 2-7 in recent history, and some of those losses were against teams outside of the Dirty Dozen.

In an unrelated development, at press time, Jimmy Clausen is not a good quarterback, and Notre Dame is not a good team.

Here's the end of the Iowa-Penn State game... good for the local kid getting the game-winning field goal in a beyond-huge pressure cooker...
