A report on the 13 University of Iowa football players that were hospitalized after a workout in January clears the players, trainers and coaches of any wrongdoing, but recommends that the workout that led to the injuries be abandoned.
Of course it does...
A five-member committee appointed by University of Iowa President Sally Mason released its findings to the Board of Regents.
The 13 players were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, which breaks down muscle cells and discolors urine. All the players were treated and spent substantial time in hospital, but they have all been released since.
According to the inquiry, back squats with heavy weights caused the injuries, but committee members say they don't know why the injuries occurred because similar workouts in the past did not cause what happened this past time.
Iowa AD Gary Barta says he will implement the committee's recommendations.
File this under "Don't do this again" with the matching index-finger wagging...
That sounds so authoritative...

Broseph's Bits And The Thursday Gospel
I don't know where there was more euphoria last night...my apartment or Jenny Craig Pavilion. San Diego knocked off St. Mary's last night on ESPN2 and dozens of people stormed the court. It's an underrated part of the college experience. I remember my freshman year at Syracuse after one of our many great wins getting the opportunity to do this. The funny thing about this is once you get on the court, you really don't have much else to do except jump around and scream. If you are late to the party though, you won't be in the pack. You will actually be on the outside looking for someone to party with.
The euphoria of this event actually loses it's luster the more you do it. I can say I probably stormed the court at least five times in my college career including once at a football game when we knocked off Virginia Tech. It's almost boring to have to navigate the crowd and railings in order to make it onto the floor for 10-15 seconds of potential face time on ESPN. I do want to tell you the most important rule is don't fall. One of the times that I made my way to the court, a female student took a dive over the railing and had to curl in the fetal position to survive.
The rules of when to storm are murky at best. In my mind, you have to be an unranked team beating a ranked squad. If you are favored by Vegas or if every pundit on the national networks pick you then it's not worth it. There have been plenty of court stormings that just don't need to be done. One of the flexible rules that should be used on a case by case basis is the last second miracle shot. Sometimes it should lead to a storming while other times not so much.
There was a court storming in my apartment after the 2-0 night the Gospel gave you, the reader. St. Bonaventure and Detroit took care of business. We hope these totals do the same.
Iowa/Northwestern Over 136.5 -- Northwestern hosts Iowa on Thursday night in the Big 10. The Hawkeyes and Wildcats played a great game January 12th in Iowa with Northwestern winning 90-71. Iowa has struggled to score as of late failing to hit 65 points in three straight games. This team scores 67.2 points per game while giving up the devilish number of 66.6. Matt Gatens (12.5 ppg), Bryce Cartwright (11 ppg) and Melsahn Basabe (10.5 ppg) lead the way for Iowa. Northwestern turns to John Shurna (17.3 ppg), Michael Thompson (14.4 ppg) and Drew Crawford (12.5 ppg) for their offensive output. They put up 73.3 points per contest while allowing 68.2. They've gone over the total in 12 of their 18 lined games. Outside of games against Wisconsin and Ohio State at home, the Wildcats have put up nice point totals in front of their own fans. Northwestern tried slowing the pace down, but their coach said after the Penn State loss that they may have to speed it up again.
Portland/San Francisco Over 134.5 -- San Francisco tries to pick up the pieces after getting undressed at home by St. Mary's. The Dons are on the road at Portland on Thursday. San Francisco has put up some nice numbers on the road at Santa Clara and Pepperdine this season. The first meeting between these two teams was a SF win 81-74. They score just 68 points per game, but almost give up 70 points per game. Michael Williams (15.1 ppg), Rashad Green (11.6 ppg) and Perris Blackwell (10.4 ppg) lead the way for San Francisco who has themselves in this West Coast Conference race. We've used Portland a ton this season. The Pilots put up 71.3 points per game while giving up 67.3. Luke Sikma (13.9 ppg), Nemanja Mitrovic (13.5 ppg) and Jared Stohl (13.3 ppg) are the Pilots main threats. This team has put up 64, 85 and 79 in their last three home games. One of these two teams need to hit 70 for this bet to have a good chance and I think someone will.

Ferentz Answers Iowa Questions On Signing Day

Iowa Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz says he still doesn't know why 13 players were hospitalized with a muscle disorder following intense workouts.
Ferentz told reporters his teams had done similar or even tougher workout routines three times before without anything going wrong.
He says he has no idea why the workout gave the players rhabdomyolysis, which releases muscle fibers into the bloodstream and can cause kidney damage. All 13 players have been released from the hospital after a week's worth of treatment.
Ferentz says the workouts will not be repeated. But he says he has confidence in Chris Doyle, the Iowa strength and conditioning coach who designed them.

DEVELOPING: Iowa Investigating Invasion Of Privacy As Some Players Discharged
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is saying that medical records for some of the 13 hospitalized Iowa football players may have been viewed by people who didn't have proper authorization.
University spokesman Tom Moore says they began investigating the matter after a normal check by the hospital's own IT Department indicated a "possible breach" of confidential information files breaking patient confidentiality accords.
The players, five of whom who have now been released, and their families were notified Friday of the matter. The UIHC is saying that the investigation could take a couple of weeks before they come up with an answer.
KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids has been able to identify one of the 13 felled by the workout.

ESPN's Joe Schad and Andy Rittenberg detail some of the apparent damage done by the workout- the first, apparently, performed by strength and conditioning coaches since the Insight Bowl...
From Schad:
One parent said some players had gained 30 to 50 pounds since entering the hospital because of the amount of fluids that have been forced into their bodies.
The parent said that one player was told he had sustained "20 to 30 percent loss of kidney function and that the damage may or may not be repaired."

Iowa Hospitalizes 12 Football Players

Twelve Iowa football players are recovering after being admitted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Monday with a rather lengthy-titled condition called "exertional rhabdomyolysis."
The condition is a breakdown of muscle fibers resulting in the release of muscle fiber contents (myoglobin) into the bloodstream. In serious cases, it could affect the kidney’s ability to clear the toxins and has potential for permanent kidney failure.
All Iowa players admitted are doing fine, according to a source close to the situation.
A University of Iowa staff physician and football team physician confirmed that the student-athletes were responding well to treatment.
“The student-athletes were admitted throughout the course of Monday evening,” said the UIHC staff physician. “All of the individuals are responding well to treatment as of Tuesday morning. All are in safe and stable condition. At this time we are not sure when any of the individuals will be discharged. Hospital discharge will be on a case by case basis.”
AD Gary Barta said that the university will do what it takes to make sure the situation never happens again to the athletes.

Everson Convicted In Iowa Assault Case
A jury has convicted a former Iowa football player of misdemeanor assault related to a sexual encounter with a female athlete from almost two-and-a-half years ago.
Jurors returned the guilty verdict against Cedric Everson after 10 hours of deliberating for a total of ten hours over a few days. Everson faces up to 30 days in jail when he is sentenced on a date to be determined.
Prosecutors claimed Everson sexually assaulted the fellow athlete in a dorm room while she was passed out after one of Everson's teammates, Abe Satterfield, assaulted her. Everson's attorney claimed the woman had blacked out and didn't remember consenting to having sex with Everson.
Jurors did not find Everson guilty on the more serious charge of "third-degree sexual abuse."

Iowa's Adam Robinson Talks, Everson Trial Continues

Former Iowa Hawkeye Adam Robinson pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge back on Thursday, was fined $315 and given a year of probation.
Robinson said in a press conference over the weekend that he has shaken off offers to play at other schools and says he intends to prove himself worthy this semester of returning.
Coach Kirk Ferentz dismissed Robinson from the team on January 3rd.

In other jurisprudence news in Iowa City, the jury left for the day in the sexual abuse case of former Hawkeye football player Cedric Everson.
The jury didn't hear from Cedric Everson or get any evidence from the defense during the proceedings, which means they have to decide if he's guilty of sexual assault based on the testimony of others.
The judge ruled that the charge against Everson should be reduced to 3rd degree sexual assault. The jury can also consider lesser charges than that if they choose...
Deliberations kick back in tomorrow morning...

Dismissed Iowa RB Adam Robinson is sorry, wants to come back

Adam Robinson was Iowa's leading rusher during the 2010 season and seemingly had it all going for him. But then, like quite a few of his teammates, Robinson was arrested in December. He was charged with marijuana possession. Robinson says he was suspended from his teams bowl game, because of academic issues. Iowa had a lengthy list of players get in trouble this December.
Robinson did an interview with the Des Moines Register, read it RIGHT HERE
In the interview he confirms his marijuana use but says the team doesn't have a drug problem. He also says he is seeking help for it.
As we said earlier, we can be pretty cynical and sometimes acerbic when it comes to athletes doing stupid things, but we also think that most, if they are sincere and express remorse should get a chance to redeem themselves.
Not many do this and we don't know if Robinson will be able to either, but in life, most people get second chances...so we are willing to wish him luck.
The kid has his work cut out for him. As does his school. The string of arrests and suspensions that Iowa had during the month of December, particularly that of receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, was troubling to say the least.

BREAKING: Iowa's Robinson Kicked Off Team

Iowa has kicked running back Adam Robinson off the team a week after he was arrested for marijuana possession.
Head Coach Kirk Ferentz announced the move in a statement- adding that he wasn't going to say anything else.
Robinson was charged back on December 27th in his hometown of Des Moines. He was suspended for the Insight Bowl for failing to comply with team policies and expectations.
The Iowa State Patrol says Robinson was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over for not having a front license plate. A trooper detected a marijuana odor coming from the vehicle, then found marijuana after a search.

Hawkeyes Outduel Mizzou In The Desert. Iowa Wins Insight Bowl

Tiger quarterback Blaine Gabbert completed a 4th down pass to T.J. Moe to keep the Mizzou drive alive however after further review it was overturned. Watch below and you be the judge.

That play secured Iowa's 27-24 Insight Bowl win over Mizzou, the Hawkeyes third straight bowl win, a school record.

Iowa's Marcus Coker was awesome running for 219 yards on 33 carries and named Offenisvie Player of the Game and Coker is just a freshman. Like any good running back Coker thanked the big guys on the offensive line.
"I already knew before the game that the O line was going to do a great job." Coker said after the game. "I was pretty comfortable after the first couple plays. I felt like I was a little bit more comfortable than I was before that."
"We are really proud of what Marcus did tonight and it was a big part of the win." Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said."We felt like we needed him to run the ball for us to have a chance in this one."

Iowa flyover might have been a "Bit" too low....

It appears as though we have a bit of a flyover controversy brewing out in the Midwest. Apparently a pair of Vance Air Force base in Oklahoma were doing a flyover before the Ohio State/Iowa game last month.
They allegedly flew a bit too low. The flight deck was supposed to be 1000 feet, according to video they looked a little bit lower than that. The base is investigating.
This is not the 1st time something like this has happened. We reported in March about a flyover at the 2009 Georgia/Georgia Tech game. Here is the story.
In that incident, the two pilots, Navy pilots, were grounded and eventually reassigned. We don't know what will happen in the Iowa incident, but it is an interesting parallel.

Dan Herron rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with 1:47 left and 8th-ranked Ohio State beat Iowa 20-17 to keep its hopes for a Rose Bowl bid going.
Terrelle Pryor threw for 195 yards and a score for the Buckeyes (10-1, 6-1 Big Ten).
21st-ranked Iowa (now 7-4, 4-3) went ahead 17-10 early in the fourth quarter on Marcus Coker's 1-yard TD run. Devin Barclay's 48-yard field goal brought the Buckeyes within 17-13, and Pryor engineered the final 76-yard drive.
Ohio State is now tied with Wisconsin and Michigan State in the Big Ten standings heading into next week's showdown with rival Michigan in the Horseshoe.

TWTW: Hawkeyes Blow A Tire, Lose To Wisconsin

Who knew a fake punt would change things so dramatically...
Bret Bielema called for one midway through the fourth quarter. Montee Ball ran 8 yards for a touchdown with 1:06 left as the 10th-ranked Badgers rallied to beat Iowa 31-30.
Scott Tolzien threw for 205 yards and a touchdown and John Clay added a pair of touchdowns for the Badgers, now 7-1/3-1...
Bielema called for it on fourth down from his own 26 with Wisconsin down 6. Ball capped an 80-yard drive with the game-winning score.
"It was something we had seen on film," Bielema said. "Once I saw them put the punt return unit there ... we gave them the call."

Bret Bielema called for one midway through the fourth quarter. Montee Ball ran 8 yards for a touchdown with 1:06 left as the 10th-ranked Badgers rallied to beat Iowa 31-30.
Scott Tolzien threw for 205 yards and a touchdown and John Clay added a pair of touchdowns for the Badgers, now 7-1/3-1...
Bielema called for it on fourth down from his own 26 with Wisconsin down 6. Ball capped an 80-yard drive with the game-winning score.
"It was something we had seen on film," Bielema said. "Once I saw them put the punt return unit there ... we gave them the call."

Your New Border War, Nebraska vs Iowa
Nebraska won't join the Big Ten Conference until next year but the Husker nation is already fanning the flames toward their new rival, the Iowa Hawkeyes, or vice versa.

TWTW: Iowa May Have Lost Ricki's Number, Lose To Northwestern

Dan Persa threw a touchdown pass and Marshall Thomas recovered a fumble for another touchdown, and Northwestern snapped No. 8 Iowa's 13-game winning streak with a 17-10 victory on Saturday.
It was the first win over a top-10 opponent for the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten) since knocking off then-No. 6 Ohio State 33-27 in overtime in 2004.
Iowa lost quarterback Ricky Stanzi to an apparent ankle injury early in the second quarter.
Freshman James Vandenberg was just 9 of 27 for 82 yards filling, and couldn't lead the Hawkeyes (9-1, 5-1 Big Ten) to any points after Stanzi left the game.

TWTW: Iowa Scores 20 Unanswered, Beats Wisconsin 20-10

Trailing by a touchdown at halftime, the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten) began the third quarter by turning an interception into a tying touchdown pass from quarterback Ricky Stanzi to tight end Tony Moeaki.
Iowa took the lead on a 10-yard touchdown run by Adam Robinson early in the fourth quarter, and the Hawkeyes' defense kept the Wisconsin Badgers scoreless in the second half.
After appearing vulnerable to the run early on, Iowa's defense clamped down on Wisconsin (5-2, 2-2) and running back John Clay, who might have been slowed by a second-quarter leg injury after a big first quarter.
Clay finished the game with 75 yards rushing.

TWTW: Northern Iowa Can't Block In The End- TWICE!!!

Mark Woodley and Jason Epner, from our friends at KWWL-TV, have your team coverage from the "Iowa escaping 17-16" game at Kinnick Stadium. Kirk Ferentz actually claims to have learned something...
Some of us at OSG HQ were watching this game from the Plains and the group we were with was incredulous at the following:
1) That it took so damn long for the ruling on the field that we knew about off the top...
2) That Northern couldn't block the same play TWICE!!!
3) Boy, do you have to feel for the UNI kicker... keep his belt and any sharp objectsaway from him...

So Much For That Idea... State Penn Locked Up
A lot of people thought the Iowa-Penn State game was a trap for Joe Paterno and the rest of the Nittany Lions when they went in to Iowa City.
It was...
The only saving grace in the Penn State loss to the Hawkeyes is that he lost in the early part of November. The number one and two teams in the BCS are a collective 2-7 in recent history, and some of those losses were against teams outside of the Dirty Dozen.
In an unrelated development, at press time, Jimmy Clausen is not a good quarterback, and Notre Dame is not a good team.
Here's the end of the Iowa-Penn State game... good for the local kid getting the game-winning field goal in a beyond-huge pressure cooker...
