Ali Farokhmanesh, Northern Iowa's first-round hero with his 3 against UNLV, had the biggest play of all- knocking down a 3-pointer in transition with the shot clock and game clock still in the 30s that sends the Panthers to the round of 16 for the first time.
UNI will face the Michigan State-Maryland winner in St. Louis.
Kansas (33-3) fell behind early, came close late with their pressing defense, but couldn't close. Cole Aldrich had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Marcus Morris added 16 points.
Farokhmanesh, who finished with 16, jumped into a huddle of teammates chanting "U-N-I!" while Marcus Morris and redshirt Kansas senior Mario Little found it hard to get up- even for the post-game handshakes.

The Monday Morning Sports Update
With a weekend of a lot of little things going on...ok...there were a couple of interesting stories, but there aren't a lot that we didn't cover over the course of the weekend. But in the interest of trying to stay somewhat consistent (as long I don't have to go to work until 11am), here are a few things that happened overnight.
George Karl Perseveres....
Your First NCAA Qualifier is...
Yes, it is getting to be that time of year in College Basketball. In fact this week would be considered the 1st of the "Tournament Weeks" with most conferences that have tournaments playing them and teams qualifying for March Madness or as we know it, the NCAA Tournament.
The 1st team in....Northern Iowa. The Panthers are in by virtue of beating Wichita State 67-53 in the Missouri Valley
Conference basketball tournament on Sunday.

George Karl Perseveres....
Best wishes to Denver Nuggets Coach George Karl who will will undergo a sur
gical procedure today (monday) to help his treatment for throat and neck cancer. He'll start another round of chemotherapy starting on Tuesday.
He hopes to return to his team on Friday. We hope so. Karl, one of the better coaches in the NBA has to be struggling to get through this. Chemo is tough on people who don't have physical, stressful job...we can only imagine how tough this is for him.
Karl spoke about the whole thing when he was diagnosed in February.

UConn Women just keep winning:
It's no secret that the University of Connecticut's women's basketball team has been one of the if not the most successful of any team in the NCAA for the past oh...20 or so years. So it should come as no surprise that they have tied their own record yesterday when they won their 70th game in a row. They advanced in the Big East tournament with a 77-41 win over Syracuse
Yes, it is short of UCLA's 88 game win streak from back in the early 70's, but in this day and time it is pretty damn impressive. The Lady Huskies haven't really been challenged this season, they have a 31-0 record and they've won all of their games by at least 10 points. It would take a monumental upset for them not to run the table and win the Women's Final Four.

TWTW: Northern Iowa Can't Block In The End- TWICE!!!

Mark Woodley and Jason Epner, from our friends at KWWL-TV, have your team coverage from the "Iowa escaping 17-16" game at Kinnick Stadium. Kirk Ferentz actually claims to have learned something...
Some of us at OSG HQ were watching this game from the Plains and the group we were with was incredulous at the following:
1) That it took so damn long for the ruling on the field that we knew about off the top...
2) That Northern couldn't block the same play TWICE!!!
3) Boy, do you have to feel for the UNI kicker... keep his belt and any sharp objectsaway from him...

UNI Goes Out With a Win
We've been following the story of the University of Northern Iowa baseball Panthers as they head to extinction due to budget cuts in Cedar Rapids.
Here's the highlights of their last game against the Bradley Braves.
John Sears and our friends at KCRG-TV9 Sports have all the drama...
At least for one day on the UNI campus, there was a divine being that gave the squad a win. They're not making an appearance in the MVC tournament.
If anyone knows off hand where those of us at OSG HQ can pick up some UNI baseball gear, it would be greatly appreciated.

More March March: The MVC
With all apologies to Brother Lee, an alum of Illinois State, we post the next story...Ali Farokhmanesh scored eight of Northern Iowa's 12 points in overtime, helping the top seed overcome a big finish from Osiris Eldridge in a 60-57 victory over Illinois State in the Missouri Valley Conference championship game Sunday.
Kwadzo Ahelegbe had 17 points and hit two free throws with 16 seconds left in OT for Northern Iowa (23-10), which earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Panthers,who tied for the regular-season title, matched a school record for victories while earning their first NCAA bid since 2004.

Eldridge had 21 points and hit five 3-pointers after a scoreless first half, but he missed a long 3-point attempt at the end of regulation and another at the end of overtime.Northern Iowa was 3-0 against Illinois State (24-9) this season,with another victory in double-overtime and all three decided by a total of nine points.
We sincerely hope Lee's better half, Karen, is only giving him plastic ware to eat with and an electric razor to shave when he heads to work.

Support UNI Baseball
Remember a while back how we told you about this year's first athletic screwjob...?The University of Northern Iowa baseball team...
They had just lost to Arkansas-Little Rock and then, Happy Monday!!! You're done at the end of the season... unless you can fill an incredibly tough demand from your Athletic Director...
The University was claiming the economic climate was "forcing" cuts in the program, so they decided on baseball. It was the only way to keep the integrity of their Title IX percentage and save money at the same time...
Right...
So the demand...???Raise $1.2-million by April 5th...
That $1.2 gets them a three-year reprieve, but in that three years they have to raise $10-million to permanently endow the program.
Gee, thanks...

UNI Set To Drop Baseball

The University of Northern Iowa will eliminate its baseball program following the 2009 season, UNI director of athletics Troy Dannen announced Monday.
"This is a sad day for Northern Iowa athletics," Dannen said. "Current budget estimates project the University will see at least a nine percent reduction in state funding. That reduction directly impacts intercollegiate athletics. The projected gap between revenues and expenses for the upcoming year is $500,000 - $600,000 as a result of the reduction in state funding.
"The magnitude of the reduction has forced us to review every program in our department. That review has concluded we cannot maintain the overall quality of our athletic program without reducing the number of sports."
With the elimination of baseball, UNI will offer 17 intercollegiate varsity sports, seven men's sports and 10 women's sports. The Panthers will continue to field men's teams in basketball, cross country, football, indoor track and field, golf, outdoor track and field and wrestling, and women's teams in basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
The Panther baseball team includes 35 student-athletes. According to NCAA rules, all student-athletes who have eligibility remaining after the 2009 season will be allowed to transfer to other schools and compete in the 2010 season. Current and incoming baseball student-athletes wishing to remain at UNI and who are receiving scholarship aid will have their scholarships honored. The timing of today's announcement is in part to accommodate the interests of the student-athletes, and to assist them in finding participation opportunities at other institutions, if they so wish. Three full-time coaches are also having their positions eliminated.
"We explored every alternative before reaching this decision," Dannen said. "Coach Rick Heller and the UNI baseball program have always represented UNI in exemplary fashion and have been positive contributors to the quality of life on our campus."
According to Ben Allen, president of UNI, "During these challenging budget times, every area of campus will be affected. This decision with respect to baseball is a reflection of the difficult decisions that we will be facing across the entire University."
This is not the first time that UNI has dropped sports. Men's and women's gymnastics were dropped in 1981, and women's field hockey was dropped in 1983. In May of 2002, the men's and women's swimming and men's and women's tennis programs were dropped, but women's swimming and women's tennis were reinstated several months later. UNI also added women's soccer in 2000.

The baseball team has been given an alternative to keep the program around. Coach Heller and AD Dannen have six weeks to raise $1.2-million to keep the baseball around in the short term. At that point, they would have a few years grace to raise $10-million to permanently endow the idea of a baseball program.
