Silver Surfer Says So Long To SC, Mora Takes High Ground...

Outgoing USC head coach Pete Carroll said it was time to move on in a farewell presser on the USC campus...

Really... who has "farewell" pressers...???

But he emphasized again his departure had nothing to do with looming sanctions from the NCAA. That meeeting with the Committee on Infractions is set for sometime between February 19 and 21 when the COI meets in Tempe, Arizona.

He told Gary Klein of the LA Times Monday morning:
"Not in any way," Carroll said. "Because I know where we stand. It's just a process we have to go through. We know we've fought hard to do right."

On the flip side, outgoing Seahawks coach Jim Mora was a guest for a full hour on the "Softy and Hugh" Show on KJR-AM in Seattle... Check it out here...

The only issue where Mora gave a bit of a dig was involving the post-season press conference last Wednesday when it is now, somewhat apparent, that Seahawks brass was looking another way...

"If you conduct yourself in an honest way, you'll be fine," he said. "If you're sneaky and suspicious and self-serving, it'll get you. Maybe not immediately, but in the end, you'll pay."

Mora is getting $12-million to leave, so the HQ thinks everything will be fine.

So much for that whole "ringing endorsement" thing...

Seattle Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke backed Mora six weeks ago when general manager Tim Ruskell stepped down in midseason.

But, when you lose your last four, you have no offense, and you're not generally liked, we get this... Jim Mora, Junior ((pictured yelling thanks, Stephen Dunn/Getty)) is out as Seattle head coach after a 5-11 season...

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports gets the HT on this one. He says the team has already gotten permission to interview assistant coaches from other teams.

Glazer lists Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier as a likely candidate, among others.

Apparently, Mora sent a text to KJR-AM 950's Dave "Softy" Mahler confirming that he had been fired...

The official release from the Seahawks says in part:

“This team, more importantly this community, means so much to me that it hurts not being able to see this through,” said Mora. “I am disappointed I did not get the chance to complete my contract. This is a tough business that sometimes demands immediate gratification.”

AFTERNOON UPDATE: Chris Mortensen is mentioning that current USC head coach Pete Carroll has shown interest and wants to bring Trojans OC Jeremy Bates with him to Seattle. Bates is also being courted by the Chicago Bears.

Mortensen, in a conversation with someone close to Carroll disclosed: "You're about to see a big headline that shakes up the major college football word," in reference to the Seahawks' development. The Seahawks did not confirm Carroll as a leading candidate but also did not deny it.

Also, Frazier, it is reported, has declined an interview opportunity with the Seahawks. Technically, he can't go through with one until the Vikings season is complete. He could talk with the Buffalo Bills last week since Minnesota was on a bye week.

Vick to the Belichick's?

Yesterday, Michael Vick spoke of being "Close" to signing a deal to play football again. Today, the rumors are flying that the "Team" in question is the New England Patriots.

In his press conference today, the King of New England, Bill Belichick was asked directly about the possibility of taking in the formerly disgraced Quarterback.

Also coming out today, reports from a few outlets saying that Vick is likely to head west...to Seattle. The story from Yahoo Sports...here .

That, I don't buy. Having covered Vick and current Seahawks Head Coach Jim Mora for a few years with the Falcons, I don't buy this. While Mora is certainly not above taking on a charity case, trying to help someone who has fallen out of favor. Vick was a "Huge" letdown to Mora and his staff in Atlanta. He was never a "Team" guy and never put in the extra time needed to be successful.

We do think the Belichick story has some merit though. The Belichick has taken in Corey Dillon and Randy Moss and changed their lives/careers, so it can be done. As for those who say the owner, Robert Kraft's wife is a big animal rights advocate; what better way to prove that Vick is trying to redeem himself than have her in his corner.

They Climbed the Mountain

Interesting story out of Seattle today. Seahawks Head Coach Jim Mora (Junior.....junior) and NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell made it to the summit of Mount Rainer and back all in the name of Charity.

The climb, which was to raise money for the Seattle area United Way had been planned for over a month. Mora and Goodell are now among the 9,000 or so estimated to succesfully scale the Mountain each year.

We like this story and though we don't know Mr. Goodell very well, we do know Coach Mora (Junior) from his stay not far from OSG HQ a few years ago. An odd dude, but with a good heart and this seems like a good way to raise a little money ($380,000) for a very worthy cause.

Mike Leach Passing Through Seattle

Things might be heating up in the coaching search at the University of Washington. We do know that Fresno State head football coach Pat Hill interviewed for the position. Now Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach flew to Seattle for his interview. Leach's agent Gary O'Hagan would not confirm that Leach spoke to U-Dub. O'Hagan told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal "I don't know anything about that," O'Hagan said. "I'm not going to comment on that." In other words, he knows nothing and didn't know when he knew it.

Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers didn't deny nor confirm that Leach interviewed with UW either.

But Alaska Airlines did confirm that Mike Leach came through town. The Seattle Post-Intellligencer got in touch with a Alaska Airlines employee privy to passenger lists who spilled the beans saying that Leach and his wife flew in Monday afternoon and left Tuesday around noon.

Texas Tech realizes it needs to up the ante and make Mike Leach very happy. Throwing large amounts of money and job security would help. Gerald Myers told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that he is preparing to offer Leach an extension and a raise.

Rumors are flying all over the Northwest that Jim Mora will be offered the job. Mora is the head coach in waiting with the Seattle Seahawks. If true than Mora has a chance to choose which bad football team in Seattle will he coach.

Brian Kelly has told UW thanks but no thanks and will stay at Cincinnati.
