Here's the Pitsburgh-Tampa highlights where the third line came up huge again for the Lightning in a 1-0 win...
Who had Sean Bergenheim in the pool...???
The Bolts become the 24th team in league history to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the series...
And the other one went overtime with a key trade deadline acquisition coming up huge in a 3-2 overtime win...
Who had Nathan Horton in the pool...???
Horton and Bergenheim are what this season is all about as we head to the CSF's...

Your Nightly NHL UPDATE: Double-Double
((HT: NHL/Versus/ROOT Sports))
Two games in the NHL took a while to close off last night...
The Tampa-Pittsburgh and the New York-Washington games both went double overtime- the first for this post-season...
Here are your game-winners... both quite fluky bouncy...
And one of the cooler moments of the evening was in the Rangers-Caps game as the crowd at MSG tried to make a point to Caps head coach Bruce Boudreau...
((HT: NHL/Versus))
Gotta love Panger's response there...
And he's right...
In other games, the Ducks evened the series with Nashville and Detroit eliminated Phoenix in four straight. Now all we need to know is the future...
Which would need to be settled by late June...

NHL Playoffs: Night 1- Pens, Wings, and Caps
((HT: NHL/Versus/CSNWashington))
Alexander Semin kept the Caps-Rangers game from heading into a second overtime...
Good enough for a 1-0 series lead...
CSNWashington's Alan May had a good outburst in studio...
After a slow start, the Red Wings took care of the soon-to-be-moving Phoenix Coyotes 4-2. Johan Franzen was his normally-active self...
Marc-Andre Fleury was in equally good form for the Pens game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Brooks Orpik had a multiple-point game as the Pens got the shutout...
Highlights from Vancouver and Anaheim when they become available...

Matt Cooke Cheap Shot: Version 1,243,456 UPDATED
This time it was on national television against the Rangers Ryan McDonagh...
Another elbow right in the mush... and the HQ wishes Torts had a few minutes with Cooke just to straighten things out...
It's just not very imaginative...
((HT: NBC/NHL/youtube))
His in-person hearing with the league office is this afternoon...
If he's suspended, it's his FIFTH- four would have involved a blow to the head...
And HIS boss was the one who wanted tighter controls on head shots, recently...
PM UPDATE: Cooke got a suspension for the remainder of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs- however long that series goes...
He's forfeiting a little over US$200,000 in salary...
If the HQ went through the Mario System, the Pens would have been fined ten times that amount...

Gillies Gets 10 Games
And the HQ is still tired of his act...
Islanders forward Trevor Gillies gets a 10-game ban for hitting the Minnesota Wild's Cal Clutterbuck from behind in his first game back from a nine-game suspension.
Here's the hit... again...
((HT: KSTC/MSG+/NHL/youtube))
Gillies drilled Clutterbuck and was given a major penalty for checking from behind and ejected.
"By targeting his opponent's head, [four] shifts into his first game back from a suspension for a very similar action, Mr. Gillies has forfeited his privilege of playing in the league for 10 games," NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell said in a statement. "While it is fortunate there was no injury on the play, there can be no justification for a player delivering a dangerous check to an opponent in this manner."
Gillies earned the nine-game suspension for charging Pittsburgh forward Eric Tangradi last month in the brawl-fest from February 11th...
Here's that classy move...again...
((HT: NHL/FSPittsburgh/youtube))
As a repeat offender, Gillies loses just under $61,000.
Whatever...

Pens-Isles Yields Suspensions... Finally...
Not that this is any kind of a surprise...
But...
The NHL suspended Islanders forward Trevor Gillies for nine games, Matt Martin for four and handed the club a $100,000 fine for the brawl against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Eric Godard was punished on the Penguins side by the league as he received an automatic 10-game suspension for leaving the bench to join a third-period brawl.
Gillies' ban was for delivering a blow to the head of Penguins forward Eric Tangradi and punching him several times, leaving him with concussion-like symptoms that will keep him out for at least Sunday's game against the New York Rangers.
Here's everything that went down, for those of you who have lived under a rock...

Pens-Isles Play Old-Time Effin' Hockey
Okay...
When was the last time the Penguins lost 9-3 after being down 6-nothing...???
No idea...
It completely degraded with the Isles up 6-0 in the second...
Understandably so...
Here's all the fighting... and everything...
((HT: NHL/FSN/youtube))
Remember... nine days ago, Pens goalie Brent Johnson beat up Rick DiPietro with a one-punch goalie fight in a Pens win.
The teams combined for 65 penalties that totaled 346 minutes with 10 player ejections. You had 15 fighting majors and 20 misconducts in a game that set records for both teams for most combined penalty minutes.
Howyalikemenow...???
Where are we...? The 1970's all of a sudden...???

Matt Cooke Suspended For Four
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke got a four-game suspension for his hit from behind on Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin.
Cooke was initially issued a five-minute major for charging.
Cooke also was handed a five-minute major for fighting, as was Columbus center Derick Brassard, who went after Cooke after the hit. Tyutin stayed in the game.
The Penguins, who lost 4-1, contended Tyutin had glanced over his shoulder before playing the puck behind his net.
"It was the worst hit I've ever had from behind," Tyutin said, according to the Columbus Dispatch. "I wasn't surprised, not when you see [Cooke] in the highlights all the time for dirty hits."
Here's the hit...judge for yourself...

Crosby Drops The Gloves For Real
And he actually does it and serves a penalty for it instead of one of the 4-gazillion other times he's exhibiting chippy behavior on the ice and they observe the "Crosby Rules."
Last night in Dallas, the Pens got beat by the Stars 5-2, but Crosby felt he had to come to the aid of Kris Letang after his scrap with Brendan Morrow.

Sidney Crosby goes yard....
Who says that Hockey players can't play other sports? For that matter, Sidney Crosby, already dubbed the natural in hockey, might just be a natural in baseball too.
Fast forward to earlier this afternoon, when Crosby joined the Pittsburgh Pirates for batting practice. Watch the swing. He's a lefty, and quite honestly, the stroke...it is pretty much textbook.
It didn't take long for the kid, to catch one. Check out the video from the Pittsburgh Penguins and NHL.com:

Max Talbot Calls Out Ovechkin; Something To Do With Vinegar And Water...
((HT: 105.9 FM The X/WXDX Pittsburgh))
At Heinz Field yesterday, the Pittsburgh Penguins were celebrating the fact that they were having a Winter Classic against the Washington Capitals.
You had your standard photo ops with Sidney Crosby and Max Talbot trying to launch pucks between the uprights... all that fun stuff...
And we even had Talbot refer to Ovechkin as a "real douche."
Gotta love those FM Dee-Jays...
Hear the interview here, thanks again to the X...
This dates back to the playoffs from last year when the Capitals' Alex Semin claimed that Penguins' captain Sidney Crosby was "nothing special" and said that the Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane was a much more interesting player.
For the sake of your calendars, the first match-up between the two is on December 23rd in Washington followed by the Winter Classic a week later...
Here's Game 7 of this year's playoff series for your reminder...
((HT: NHL/Versus/rvwv89))
And here's the NHL Network's Brian Duff catching up with Crosby about the Winter Classic... presumably after he tried to wrist one past the crossbar...

Habs Take Out Defending Cup Champ Pens 5-2
They won the first game at Civic Arena in Pittsburgh 2-1 behind Jean Beliveau 42 years ago. Tonight, the Montreal Canadiens won the last game at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh 5-2 sending the Penguins home for the summer.
The 8th seed Habs now wait for either the 6th-seed Philadelphia or the 7th-seeded Boston as they figure out who wants to win their series in the eastern conference.
Gionta scored twice as the bleu, blanc, et rouge stormed out to leads of 2-0 after one period and 4-0 in the second period.
But as the HQ says: The key to the playoffs is a hot goaltender and Jaroslav Halak certainly qualifies...
Another HQ note: TBH is not shedding any tears over the loss of Sidney Crosby to her playoff bracket...
Here's the Brian Gionta goal that started the whole thing...

Cammalleri Stays Hot As Habs Even Series
Mike Cammalleri scored two goals and Jaroslav Halak made 38 saves as the Canadiens surprised the Pittsburgh Penguins by winning 3-1 on Sunday to even their series at a game a piece.
Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin didn't name Halak as Game 2 starter until just before the game itself considering his getting shelled in Game 1.
Game 3 is Tuesday night in Montreal, followed by Game 4 on Thursday. The first playoff series between the teams since 1998 returns to Pittsburgh for Game 5 on Saturday.
Here's one of Cammalleri's goals. One more suited for BP or bunt practice...

Staal Out For Playoffs... Maybe... Maybe Not...
((HT: Versus/NHL/FunHockeyVideos))
Depends on who you ask...
Earlier Saturday, Pittsburgh Penguins winger Jordan Staal was listed as "gone for the season" after receiving a severed tendon in his right foot, thanks to the blade of Habs' defenseman PK Subban Friday night.
But... as "lower body injuries" go...
Not so fast my friends, after all... this is the playoffs...
Depending upon the healing process, Staal could join the Penguins by the Conference Final should the team advance that far.
Head coach Dan Bylsma told reporters at the morning skate on Saturday that Staal "was day-to-day."
Aren't we all...
It is a similar injury to the one that caused the Canadiens' Andrei Markov to miss 35 games at the beginning of the season.
Here's that injury... very flukey...
John Forslund and FOSG Darren Eliot continue their busy night...

Markov Returns To Montreal Off Cooke Hit
((HT: Versus/NHL/hockeyfanatik72))
The playoffs have officially ramped up a few notches...
The Montreal Canadiens have confirmed that defenseman Andrei Markov has returned to Montreal to receive treatment for an injury suffered Friday night in their Game 1 loss to Pittsburgh.
Markov was hurt when he was checked into the boards by the Pittsburgh Penguins' Matt Cooke. Markov fell awkwardly into the boards, threw one of his gloves into the air and was in visible pain on the ice as some of his teammates went after Cooke.
Markov stayed down for several minutes before being helped off the ice, putting no weight on his right leg when he was exiting.
No word on a diagnosis, other than the anticipated "lower-body injury..."
