Matt Cooke Suspended For Four
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke got a four-game suspension for his hit from behind on Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Fedor Tyutin.
Cooke was initially issued a five-minute major for charging.
Cooke also was handed a five-minute major for fighting, as was Columbus center Derick Brassard, who went after Cooke after the hit. Tyutin stayed in the game.
The Penguins, who lost 4-1, contended Tyutin had glanced over his shoulder before playing the puck behind his net.
"It was the worst hit I've ever had from behind," Tyutin said, according to the Columbus Dispatch. "I wasn't surprised, not when you see [Cooke] in the highlights all the time for dirty hits."

Markov Returns To Montreal Off Cooke Hit

The playoffs have officially ramped up a few notches...
The Montreal Canadiens have confirmed that defenseman Andrei Markov has returned to Montreal to receive treatment for an injury suffered Friday night in their Game 1 loss to Pittsburgh.
Markov was hurt when he was checked into the boards by the Pittsburgh Penguins' Matt Cooke. Markov fell awkwardly into the boards, threw one of his gloves into the air and was in visible pain on the ice as some of his teammates went after Cooke.
Markov stayed down for several minutes before being helped off the ice, putting no weight on his right leg when he was exiting.
No word on a diagnosis, other than the anticipated "lower-body injury..."

So Much For That Idea... Pens Now The 4-Seed
A lot of times, if you look at a game on the surface and on the paper everyone talks about, you'll see two teams that have two different ideas running through their heads at any given moment...
One team is going nowhere, except on vacation, after game 82...
The other team is planning how to get prepared for their playoff run...
One team rests three of its highest-paid players on the last home game of the season.
The other team is resting no one and throwing everything they think they have at an inferior opponent...
What's that silly phrase about "why they play the games somewhere else than on paper...?"
That's what happened when the Pittsburgh Penguins played the Hosting Thrashers Saturday evening at Philips Arena...
The Pens were fighting to stay with the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference race for the 2010 postseason- identical records, identical point totals, and identical ideas...
Keep winning...
The Devils kept up their end of the bargain pounding the Islanders, but for some reason the Penguins ran into an Atlanta team that played in front of a sold-out house and had other ideas.
A chippy, scoreless first period led to an equally chippy second period. In the opening twenty minutes, Evander Kane wanted a piece of Sidney Crosby for perceived-shenanigans. In the second period, Matt Cooke got a piece of Kane.
But Kane got Cooke with a straight right...
"If they take exception to who gets hit out there, does that mean you are supposed to start a fight?" Thrashers head coach John Anderson said after the game. "I don't get it. Crosby is so great for this game, but when you're always around the puck, you're going to get hit a little bit. Every time he gets body checked, does that mean somebody is going to get attacked?
"Cooke came at an 18-year-old. What goes around, comes around. That's all I can tell you."
Followed by a draw between Eric Boulton and Eric Godard...

Brian Little scored on Marc-Andre Fleury to give the Thrashers a 1-nothing lead, and it held up on a night where Todd White, Christoph Schubert, Evgeny Artukhin, Pavel Kubina, and Nik Antropov all sat for one reason or another.
"It's disappointing, obviously," Sidney Crosby admitted after the game. "We had a chance to win out. Now we have to make sure we play a good game tomorrow. Our focus is on the playoffs. We've got to move on."
The Penguins now will face the Ottawa Senators in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. But the Sens go into the series, and the rest of the season, without Alexei Kovalev. Kovalev suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in an otherwise-useless game against Tampa Bay Thursday night. Recovery time is normally three to four months.
"The bottom line," Crosby says, "is that we've gotta be better. We have an opportunity a lot of teams don't have."

Bruins Get Matt Cooke, Still Lose To Pens

It was the time for the rematch between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins.
Matt Cooke had taken out the Bruins' Marc Savard in the last meeting between the two, so it was time for implementation of "The Code."
Shawn Thornton got to square off against Cooke to defend Savard, but that was about all the defending Boston did Thursday night.
The Pens won 3-0...

The running debate is whether or not this is worse than the Brad Richards-David Booth meeting where Richards destroyed Booth with an elbow of his own...
Expect Cooke to get a hearing with league brass sometime very soon...
And also expect Matt Cooke to be in the cross hairs of every Bruin from this moment forward...

Asham's "Bitten Finger" Is Fine...
We all know the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins never have liked each other- now with the Peter Laviolette-coached Flyers turning more and more into the Broad Street Bullies ((and winning more games than losing)), there's a bit of a fire under their pants.
Sunday's game against the Pens showed that, and was somewhat personified by the scrum that involved Aaron Asham and Matt Cooke. Asham claims that Cooke used his finger as an appetizer during the brunch time slot.
“I got a couple marks, nothing serious; it hurt at the time,” Asham said, repeating what he said on Sunday that Cooke was “gutless” for biting him. “It’s no big deal,” Asham said. “I got a couple of good shots in on him.”
As evidenced by the play below... Doc, Edzo, and Pierre have the call...
