Who Is Patrick Cantlay And Stop Making The Joke...

It's too easy...

Patrick Cantlay, a UCLA sophomore, shot a course-record 60 to take the lead at 13-under par at the Travelers tournament in Hartford. He is the first amateur to shoot 60 in a PGA Tour event, and only the 24th person ever to card a 60.

But, now, Cantlay has to answer the questions all over again about his going pro. Last week at the US Open, he said the earliest he would turn pro would be "after I get my degree."

But how 'bout now...???

"I'm going to stay amateur definitely for the Walker Cup," Cantlay said of the premier amateur event in September at Royal Aberdeen. "And my plan is to stay amateur until I finish college."

Larry Drew II Heading West. Enrolled At UCLA

This last we heard from Larry Drew II he was leaving North Carolina because he lost his starting point guard position. The Tar Heels thrived with a pass first dribble with you head up point guard in Kendall Marshall. Heck Marshall almost led North Carolina to the Final Four.

It appears Larry Drew II has found a home and it's UCLA. Drew must like the baby blue colors, this time with gold trim.

UCLA's Scout.com site is citing a source say Drew enrolled Monday for the spring quarter at UCLA and will be eligible for the 2012-13 season. Drew will have one year of eligibility with the Bruins.

By the way Drew will be paying his own way through UCLA until he is eligible to play.

Interesting to see how Larry Drew will do playing for Ben Howland.

Broseph's Bits And The Weekend Gospel

Just the picks for this Saturday. We seem to be hitting a bit of a roll right now.

Arizona/UCLA Over 140 -- It's going to be a special day at UCLA when they host Arizona at Pauley Pavilion. It will be the last game at the building for some time while it undergoes renovations. School officials are calling for a "Blue Out," which means there will be a lot of emotion. The Bruins have won 11 of their last 13 while Arizona has won 12 of their 15 PAC 10 games. The Wildcats have scored 77.6 points per game this season. Arizona has scored at least 75 points in six of their last eight contests. The first time these two met up on January 27th, Arizona won 85-74. They are led by Derrick Williams (19.3 ppg), Lamont Jones (9.6 ppg) and Kyle Fogg (8.3 ppg). UCLA has more balance with five players scoring at least 10 points per game. They put up 71 as a team while giving up 66.3. The stats show that this team has played a lot of low scoring close games, but they were against teams who tried to play at that pace. UCLA's games with California and Washington State were both played at a higher pace because their opponents didn't mind running.

Mississippi State/Tennessee Over 135.5 -- A topsy turvy eventful season continues for Mississippi State who is in Tennessee on Saturday. MSU is coming off a stunning two point loss to LSU 84-82 at home. The Bulldogs defense has deserted them this season giving up over 70 points in three of their last five contests away from home. Offensively they've scored 71 or more in three straight contests and have no problems getting up and down the court. The team has multiple weapons led by Ravern Johnson (17 ppg), Dee Bost (16.4 ppg), Renardo Sidney (14.3 ppg) and Kodi Augustus (11.6 ppg). Tennessee has also had a long eventful season dealing with Bruce Pearl's issues and some questionable losses. Still the Vols are 17-11 and are putting up 70.8 points per game. They are led by Scotty Hopson (17.4 ppg) and Tobias Harris (14.2 ppg). Tennessee's defense has abandoned them from time to time although they haven't given up more then 70 in four straight games. With a total like this, we don't need an explosion of scoring. Mississippi State's defense will let them down again in this one.

San Jose State -6.5 -- Louisiana Tech's offense took a blow when DeAndre Brown was suspended for the rest of the season. They have failed to crack the 60 point mark in four of their last five games. The team has also lost every road game since December 14th when they played at Houston Baptist. The first time the Bulldogs took on San Jose State, they lost 79-74 on January 13th. They have lost 12 of their last 15 games. La Tech now relies on Olu Ashaolu and his 14.4 points per game for offensive production. The Spartans have two players who score more then that themselves including Adrian Oliver who scores 24.4 points per game. He has help in Justin Graham (15.2 ppg) and Keith Shamburger (11.8 ppg). San Jose State has won three straight after losing the first game of their six game homestand. They knocked off New Mexico State in overtime last time out and got a great effort from Oliver in that win. The Spartans have taken care of business at home against teams they should beat. They'll do it again on Saturday.

Broseph's Bits And The Weekend Gospel

The gospel was bored on Friday night so he turned on some NBA basketball and was reminded why it just doesn't show up much on his radar. I'm a college basketball junkie and the thought of a midnight WAC or West Coast Conference game makes me so happy. I still don't understand why ESPN took away my beloved midnight game on Big Monday done by Stephen Bardo and Terry Gannon. It was a rare joy of mine to watch Gonzaga and Santa Clara do battle and have those two gentlemen call the game. I can watch a MAC conference game between the directional Michigan schools. I just can't say the same about a random NBA game.

Back to the NBA though, I just can't get into it. Watching the Lakers and Nuggets, there's so much I find missing in my basketball experience. First off, there's no juice in the stands. College games are littered with high powered alums and drunk college students screaming just because. NBA games are littered with celebrities and college students looking for study hall. The NBA also has a major competition issue with so few teams able to compete with the elite of the Celtics, Heat, Spurs, Lakers etc. College basketball also has their elite and their teams that don't have a chance, but there still isn't this helpless feeling it seems. These kids are playing for their futures while the NBA stars are playing for their next contract. It's easier to identify with a Jimmer Fredette and a Kemba Walker then a Kenyon Martin and an Andre Iguodala.

We move to the grand finale of each sport. In the NBA you get potentially seven matchups between the same two teams and the same stars doing the same things over and over again. Where's the fun in that? In college, you get a tournament with 68 teams and one chance to move on or not. It's that one chance that allows us to crown Cinderella's which are rarely found in the NBA. When's the last time a 6 seed made it to the NBA Finals? When's the last time an NBA team captured the heart of the casual fan like Butler did last year? I'd like to think those answers are close to never.

Finally, let's talk about TV coverage. To the common person, the NBA is filled with 12 teams or so because that's all you see on TV. How many times can I watch the Heat or Lakers without getting bored out of my mind? I realize the true NBA fan has no problem with this, but c'mon there's got to be some variety. The Clippers and T-Wolves aren't too good, but they have players worth watching so put them on TV. There are at least 26 college basketball games on Saturday for the fan. Yes, Duke and Ohio State and Connecticut are pretty much always on too, but there's enough channels with games on to get around them. I fully expect the hate mail from the NBA fan, but it's not going to change my mind. Give me Utah State-New Mexico State over Lakers-Nuggets any day of the week.

The gospel took the night off after another winning day on Thursday night. Saturday's are always difficult as I came up with at least 15 leans. These I feel are the best of that bunch so enjoy.

UCLA -6.5 -- UCLA welcomes a wounded Stanford Cardinal team to Pauley on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal lost last time out 65-42 at Southern Cal. They had a lot of issues trying to contain the size of the Trojans with Nikola Vucevic and Alex Stepheson doing a lot of the damage in Thursday's loss. UCLA has Joshua Smith, Reeves Nelson and Tyler Honeycutt to throw at the undersized Cardinal. Stanford has lost by 33 at Butler, 11 at Oklahoma State and 10 at Arizona. Jeremy Green (14.9 ppg) and Josh Owens (11.7 ppg) are Stanford's main threats. That's not saying much considering they score only 63.8 points per game. The Bruins average more then that at 72.1 points per contest. They are led by Reeves Nelson (14.5 ppg), Tyler Honeycutt (13.5 ppg), Malcolm Lee (12.2 ppg) and Lazeric Jones (11.2 ppg). UCLA has won three straight and has been real tough at home for the most part. They'll triumph in this one as well.

Kansas/Texas Over 143 -- Arguably, the two top teams in the Big 12 hit the court in Kansas on Saturday. The Jayhawks are one of the few unbeatens so far this season. They do it with an offense that averages 83.2 points per game while giving up only 61.1. This is a DEEP team with six guys averaging at least eight points per game. They've gotten even better since adding Josh Selby who has played nine games and averaged 12.1 points per game. They've scored at least 80 points in five of their last seven contests. The Longhorns are no slouch either offensively. They put up 78.2 points per game and have five players who average at least nine points per game. Texas has scored 83, 67 and 78 in their last three road games. This series has produced 10 overs in their last 15 matchups including five straight at Kansas. We think this will go over the total as well.

North Texas -8 -- We faded Arkansas State in their last road game against Denver and came up a winner so why not do it again. ASU lost 74-36 to a Denver team that is talented, but nowhere near as good as North Texas. They are now 1-10 on the road which is not a good number for a team that averages just below 70 points per game. Martavius Adams (12.6 ppg) and Donald Boone (10.2 ppg) are the Red Wolves main threats. The Mean Green put up 79.1 points per game this season. They are led by Tristan Thompson (18.1 ppg), Josh White (13.8 ppg), George Odufuwa (11.3 ppg) and Dominique Johnson (10.4 ppg). The Mean Green have lost four games this season and all came on the road. They have pounded each of their home Sun Belt opponents by 10 points or more. They won by 17 last time out at woeful Louisiana Monroe and can be a handful when they are running and gunning. Arkansas State will be in for a long evening on Saturday.

Idaho +1.5 -- The Vandals have won six straight contests and are alone in 2nd place of the WAC entering this home game against Boise State. Idaho is 3-1 against Boise under coach Don Verlin. The team has the conference's 2nd best defense and six players averaging between seven and 11 points per game. The best part of this win streak is that four of the games came on the road. They've used the 74-69 home loss to New Mexico State as motivation and have played great basketball since then. Boise State is 11-7 having lost two straight contests. They are led by Robert Arnold's 15.5 points per game. Boise's losses the last two games have come at home to Utah State and Nevada. They lost at Portland, Utah, Drake and UNLV on the road. Idaho's the better team so we'll take the points and the outright win in this one.

OSG Buzzer Beater: UCLA Claws Past Cal On A Last Second Tip In.

Not only did UCLA's Reeves Nelson have a career night with 24 points Nelson also won the game for the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion with a tip in at the buzzer.

UCLA is now 4-2 in the Pac 10, 12-6 overall.

Texas really wasn't that good...UCLA lays the Smack Down in Austin....

What was thought to be true, proved to be true on Saturday. Texas was over-rated. The nations 7th ranked team lost to UCLA 34-12...at home, in front of 101,000-plus,  in Austin.

While the 4-first half turnovers certainly didn't help the Longhorns cause, UCLA just pretty much ran over them. The Bruins ran for 264 yards in the game.

To quote Texas coach Mack Brown "It was a rear-end kicking".

Wooden Laid To Rest

Former UCLA Bruins basketball coach John Wooden was laid to rest in a private burial Saturday.

Wooden, who died June 4, was buried in Los Angeles following a ceremony attended only by family and invited guests at Forest Lawn's Old North Church in the Hollywood Hills, according to UCLA athletics spokesman Marc Dellins.

A public memorial for the legendary coach is planned on June 26 at UCLA's Pauley Pavillion.

We touched on this story as breaking news last night and now we find much, much more to say about the greatest college basketball and arguably the great basketball coach period...who ever lived.

As you know, John Wooden, 99 years old, 10-time NCAA Basketball National Champ and inspiration to just about anyone who has ever met him or read or studied his works and what he was about, passed away on Friday night

Over the course of the day, more and more of his teachings and philosophy's are being discussed. And they should be. He perhaps was the greatest teacher and proponent of basketball, business and life as a "Team" sport that ever lived.

Wooden Passes Away...Long Live the Wizard

**BREAKING STORY**

John Wooden, the Wizard of Westwood and perhaps the greatest College Basketball coach in history passed away this evening at the age of 99.

Wooden coached UCLA through the 60's and 70's when they were considered the pre-eminent team in College Basketball. The list of great College and NBA players who had the fortune to play for him is way longer than we could talk about here.

The Associated Press had reported earlier this afternoon that former UCLA legend Jamaal Wilkes visited with his former coach and that Wooden was coherent enough to carry on a decent conversation though according to the report he looked and seemed "Very Frail".

Obviously, this is a big story in the world of sports and details are still coming out. We will try our best to update this story throughout the weekend.

Wooden Update: "Resting Comfortably"

Former UCLA head basketball coach John Wooden is said to be resting comfortably at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He was admitted on May 26 due to dehydration, the school said.

Former Bruins star Bill Walton told AP from the NBA Finals that he last visited with Wooden two days ago at the hospital.

"He's the greatest," Walton said. "We love him."

Thursday, former Lakers coach Bill Sharman and his wife, Joyce, visited Wooden at UCLA Medical Center according to ESPN.

"I talked to him before [Game 1 of the NBA Finals]. He could talk a little bit, and he could see who you were, but you could see it was going downhill."

Though Wooden could barely talk, Sharman said, Wooden said what he needed to.

"We said goodbye today," Sharman said. "I think he realized it."

DEVELOPING STORY: Wooden Hospitalized At UCLA, Condition "Grave..."

Former UCLA men's basketball coach John Wooden is being treated at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

A report claims that Wooden, who turned 99 on October 14th, was in "grave" condition and had not eaten in the last couple days. A UCLA spokesman could not immediately confirm the report. The university's sports information director, Marc Dellins, could not be reached for immediate comment. Another athletic department official reached by the LA Times wouldn't comment either.

Wooden’s health has been an issue in recent weeks as he was briefly hospitalized about a month ago.

Lavin to St. Johns...Yawn!

Hey for those of you not tired of the college basektball coaching carousel, St. Johns finally convinced someone to take that job. Steve Lavin. Lavin, who hasn't coached in the past 7 years was working at ESPN as a college basketball analyst, which apparently is a good job for a former coach if you want to get back in the game.

Lavin, who last coached at UCLA at the beginning of the 21st century is apparently getting a 6-year deal that will total somewhere around $9 million.

The Red Storm had been having a tough time convincing a "Big Name" to take their job. Billy Donovan of Florida and Paul Hewitt of Georgia Tech both declined the opportunity.

USC Gets Their Own Update Now... Chow Down And Hold The Mayo...

The HQ thinks that Chow wouldn't have gotten along with Changing Lane in the long-term, anyway...

And, according to Kelly Naqi at ESPN, OJ Mayo ((to the HQ's shock and surprise)) has not cooperated with the internal investigation the school made on illegal gifts and benefits, Rodney Guillory, stop us if you've heard all this before...

Mayo has referred all questions to his agent, LaPoe Smith, who isn't answering questions and told the LA Times last week that "(w)e can't talk about innuendoes..."

TWTW: Passion Buckets Invade Nation's Capital, Take Out Toledo

You never know what happens when Passion Buckets invade Washington, DC, but after UCLA's win over Temple in their bowl game they may want to keep going back.

The Owls were playing in their first bowl game in thirty years- which speaks volumes about the job Coach Golden has done while he's been with the program. They even had the early lead at the half, but someone reminded them that they were actually playing in a bowl game for the first time in thirty years.

Akeem Ayers returned an interception 2 yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter for a 30-21 win.

You could see the wheels come off for Temple, and you kinda felt for them, but they've done really well once they were abolished to the MAC.

The Bruins (7-6) finish with a winning record for the first time since 2006. Temple's only previous bowl appearance were the inaugural Sugar Bowl in 1935 and the Garden State Bowl in 1979.

The Powder Blue Neuheisels Bring Down "Big Orange" 19-15

Lane Kiffin got his first test as head coach at Tennessee facing L.A.'s other college football team, UCLA, and didn't pass.

Neither the Vols or the Bruins lit it up offensively. UCLA only had 186 yards of total offense but the Vols only could generate 208 yards.

A big reason why the Bruins prevailed at Neyland Stadium Saturday was that their quarterback, Kevin Prince, made the least mistakes. Prince was 11-23 for 101 yards and a touchdown but no interceptions.

Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton hasn't endeared himself to the Vol nation and after his performance Saturday against UCLA the fans of big orange are seeing red.

Crompton stat line: 13-26 passing for 93 yards, no touchdowns but 3 interceptions.

Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin took the blame for Crompton's performance when asked if he considered pulling his starting quarterback.

"No. I thought I didn't do a very good job today of taking care of Jonathan." Kiffin said. "I tried to stay with the run game a lot of times as you can see with the lopsided ratio of run-to-pass. I think we ran the ball 44 times or something. We've got to do better. I think that showed today, which is my fault for playing some players who haven't practiced enough because of injuries and hoping they would go out there and make plays. That really makes Jonathan suffer. So we didn't do very many good things around him."

So Kiffin was hell bent on running the ball down the throats of UCLA and the Bruin defense didn't break.

"Our defense from the second to the end of the third quarter really dominated the ball." UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel said, "From field position to turnovers, I felt like our defense was taking over the game so I didn't feel it was necessary to be risky offensively."

So what results will the Vols have against SEC defenses which are among the best. I can't imagine what the 3rd Saturday in October will be like for UT when they face Alabama. UCLA's defense might have dominated Saturday but they didn't look as awesome as Alabama's has been.

Kiffin may not be very confident in his offense and after Saturday, especially the passing game.

Meanwhile UCLA just might be a factor in the Pac-10. You don't go into the den of Neyland Stadium and win without being a really good football team. Winning a close game against an SEC team on the road will be huge for the Bruins confidence. This was a team that already felt disrespected nationally, in the Pac-10 and in L.A. UCLA earned respect Saturday.

Tennessee has some work to do.

UCLA stopped Tennessee's Montario Hardesty on fourth-and-2 in the closing minutes to make Kai Forbath's four field goals stand up for a 19-15 win over the mistake-prone Volunteers on Saturday.

Trailing by 6, the Vols (1-1) had a chance to take the lead from UCLA after driving 52 yards, but UCLA held fast.

Tennessee got a safety when Dennis Rogan sacked Kevin Prince on the next drive, but an inept Jonathan Crompton took a sack and threw three incomplete passes after getting the ball back.

After a confident opener, Crompton unraveled early against the Bruins. On the first play after halftime, he threw his third interception of the day -- to Rahim Moore.

Forbath kicked a 39-yard field goal four plays later for a 13-10 lead.

Thought: Isn't everyone's offense confident playing Western Kentucky...???
That is the idea, isn't it...???

Pete Carroll Says Trojans Will Wear Red At UCLA

Back when Southern California and UCLA shared the L.A. Coliseum, they would both wear there home jerseys. That tradition ended after 1982. USC head coach Pete Carroll wants to return that tradition when the Trojans and Bruins play Saturday at the Rose Bowl, which UCLA has staked a claim as its home stadium. Carroll says Southern Cal is wearing red jerseys Saturday. UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel is OK with it, the NCAA isn’t thrilled.

NCAA rules say the visiting team must wear white. Funny, I’ve seen the visiting team wear dark jerseys at LSU and sometimes at Georgia Tech? Seems to me there is some wiggle room.

Of course the NCAA is inflexible and rules are rules. Should the NCAA say no and USC wears red anyway than the Trojans will lose a timeout each half, be sent to their room and grounded for 2 weeks.

Pac 10 commissioner Tom Hanson has forwarded that request to Rogers Redding who happens to be the secretary of the NCAA rules committee. Well, we're waiting.

Here's the 1967 game between USC and UCLA. The Trojans in Red, the Bruins wearing the baby blues. O.J. Simpson was awesome in this game, almost like he was running from the law.

College Basketball: Pac 10 Predictions

UCLA rules the west coast and Ben Howland has another great team returning to Westwood. Arizona State could make life hell for the Bruins though.

Best Team In The Pac-10: UCLA Bruins
UCLA has the brand name, gets all the top 5 star talent out west and has a brilliant head coach in Ben Howland. Darren Collison returned for his senior season and is a playmaker and a shut down defender. The Bruins may have lost Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook and Richard Mbah a Moute to the NBA but don't worry, UCLA has the goods to go back to the Final Four.

Best Player In The Pac-10: James Harden - Arizona State
It would be easy to pick Collison but Harden is the real deal. He can shoot, defend, drive the hoop and finish plus draw fouls. Enjoy him Sun Devil fans, Harden won't be around much longer. NBA millions beckon.

Team That Could Surprise: Washington State Cougars
Wazzou lost 3 key starters but this team still has some veteran leaders. Most importantly, Tony Bennett is an outstanding coach and will find ways to get 20 wins and a upper division finish in the Pac-10
