DEVELOPING: Huguely Indicted In UVa Lacrosse Murder

A grand jury has indicted former UVA lacrosse player George Huguely on all six counts, including murder, in the death of ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love.

The Charlottesville grand jury reviewed first-degree murder, robbery, burglary, statutory burglary and grand larceny charges. The panel then decided to indict the 23-year-old and allow the case to proceed to trial which begins in February of 2012.

Huguely is accused in the May 3, 2010, death of Yeardley Love.
He has remained in jail since his arrest shortly after the murder.

George Huguely Steams Toward Grand Jury

The judge overseeing the George Huguely murder proceedings found probable cause and will send his findings to a grand jury. The grand jury convenes April 18th and will probably hand down murder charges. Huguely, who has been charged with 6 felonies- including the murder of fellow UVA lacrosse player, and ex-girlfriend, Yeardley Love- found out about the probable cause decision after nine hours of testimony Monday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Northern Arizona -3 -- The Grizzlies will try and keep up their good ways in the Big Sky conference when they hit the road to take on Northern Arizona. It'll be tough for the Grizz without Will Cherry who will be out due to a sprained ankle. Cherry averages 15.5 points per game and shoots 44% from the field. This mean's they'll rely on Brian Qvale (14.4 ppg) and Derek Selvig (10.8 ppg) more. Northern Arizona has a good homecourt and multiple weapons for teams to deal with. The Lumberjacks are led by Cameron Jones (19.5 ppg), Gabe Rogers (11.7 ppg) and Shane Johannsen (10 ppg). Montana won the first meeting at home 83-80 on December 29th. Cherry scored 27 points adding four rebounds and six assists to that stat line. NAU shot 56% in that game getting 30 from Jones and 19 from Platt. Now the scene shifts to NAU's building where they've lost by just once. We like NAU's chances to hold serve at home against a weaker Montana team.

Bowling Green -3 -- The Falcons have enjoyed conference play after starting the season 5-9. They are 6-2 in the MAC having won three straight and five of their last six. The Falcons play a stiff 2-3 defense which has helped them allow only 65.2 points per contest. Bowling Green is led by Scott Thomas (11.8 ppg), A'uston Calhoun (10.8 ppg) and Dee Brown (9.9 ppg). Western Michigan is 11-9, 4-3 in the MAC. They have some defensive problems giving up nearly 70 points per contest. They do score a bit more then Bowling Green, but may lack the shooters to break the zone. Demetrius Ward (38.9%) and Alex Wolf (38.6%) are the best shooters the Broncos have. Western Michigan is coming off a nice road win at Miami Ohio, but they've lost at Towson and Toledo who are two of the worst teams in the country. This team's inconsistency makes me like Bowling Green who has defended homecourt well.

Virginia +9.5 -- The Cavaliers weren't expected to do much this season. While they aren't going to be in the field of 68, they've proven to be a thorn in the side of their opponents. After knocking off Clemson, the Hoos hit the road to take on Miami who is coming off a win over Georgia Tech where they had a TON of turnovers. The Cavs haven't exactly wilted on the road. They won at Minnesota and Virginia Tech before losing to Duke, BC and Wake Forest. The Blue Devil game was close for a half while the team could have won in Boston College. The team defense keeps them in games allowing just 63 points per contest. Mustapha Farrakhan (13.1 ppg), K.T. Harrell (9.9 ppg) and Joe Harris (9.9 ppg) are the UVA leaders on offense. The Hurricanes meanwhile love to play close contests. They have played seven straight games that have been decided by single digits. This is coming after an 11 point loss at Duke which was also close. The Canes lack of a solid point guard and an inconsistent offense will keep the Cavaliers in it till the end.

Huguely Defense Claims Love Death Not Caused By Beating

Former University of Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely has a defense team, all right... and they now have their idea as to why fellow student, and former Huguely girlfriend, Yeardley Love was found dead in her apartment.

It wasn't Huguely's fault...

Defense attorneys are now asking a Charlottesville judge for access to Love's medical records. They say the cause of death is still inconclusive. Depending on the medical examiner you ask in open court, it's either blunt force trauma, not blunt force trauma, or the traces of Adderall found in Love's system...

Love's mother sent a letter to the court asking that her daughter's medical records not be made available in open court for perusal...

You know, the HQ can never really figure Dook out...

They're competitive, they're getting blown out...

They're a doormat in the ACC, they sneak up on someone late in the year and cause havoc with all that is normal and right with the world as we know it.

Actually, with under three minutes left in regulation, the Cavaliers took a 48-47 lead thanks to a Keith Payne touchdown run.

Then Duke converted a 4th and 18 and scored the game winning touchdown just three plays later.

Virginia falls to 4-5 overall this season despite 634 total yards and 417 passing yards from Marc Verica.

They have their final home game of the season against Maryland next week.

Virginia To Miami: Yes We Have A Football Team

There are those who thought and I among those who thought the Virginia Cavaliers would defeat someone they were not suppose to in the first year of the Mike London era. That happened Saturday in Charlottesville.

Virginia jumped on the Hurricanes and knocked Miami quarterback Jacory Harris out of the game. At the half the Wahoos lead 17-0 before the Hurricanes made their usual comeback however, it fell short. Virginia gets their first conference win defeating 22nd ranked Miami 24-19.

It's the first ACC win for Mike London as UVa head coach who feels this win sends a message.

"When you have a team that has taken its lumps, the only way to bring them out of that mindset is to say ‘I have enough faith in you that we are going to go for it and we are going to get it.'" London said. "That's the only way you create the mindset that you want to be physical and you want to compete. Why not?"

London added, "When you have a group of young men who hear ‘you guys are only going to win three games' and ‘you're no good,' those that are in the room keep hearing the message ‘you're not fast enough, you're not good enough.' They refuse to listen to those things. We are what we are and we play a style that's conducive to who we are. Today we played a style that was good enough to hold on and beat a very good team, a fast team, an athletic team regardless of who is in the game."

Love Investigation Documents Released

The documents have been released in the Yeardley Love homicide case, and they give your detailed description of what witnesses told police happened on the night Love died. That includes information about how she was dressed and the physical altercation between her and murder suspect George Huguely.

Witnesses told police they found Yeardley Love in her bed wearing only panties, but a spokesman for the City of Charlottesville said Love's family has returned the T-shirt they maintain that she was wearing on the night she died.

Huguely told police she was wearing a shirt that might have contained evidence only after police had already searched Love's apartment.

UVA Women's Lacrosse Season Ends In Quarters

The day before graduation in Charlottesville, the Virginia Cavaliers lost to North Carolina 17-7 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA lacrosse tournament. UVa was playing its first road game since Love's death three weeks ago.

"I don't think that there's any way that you can really move on from" Love's death, senior midfielder Brittany Kalkstein said. "Obviously, it's going to be in our thoughts forever."

Virginia's players again wore T-shirts that said "One Team. One Heart. One Love." Their orange jerseys bore black patches on their chests with "LOVE" in white.

Some North Carolina students wore Carolina-blue T-shirts bearing Love's name and jersey number 1, and a moment of silence was held before the game.

UVA Pays Tribute To Love At NCAA's

The Virginia women's lacrosse team played for the first time since the death of teammate Yeardley Love.

The Cavaliers rallied in the last four minutes to beat Towson 14-12 Sunday and reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.

Love's body was found May 3, and UVA men's lacrosse player George Huguely is charged with the murder. The Virginia women's players wore shirts under their jerseys with the phrase "One Team. One Heart. One Love."

The men's squad, in their game against Mount St. Mary's, had the phrase on their wamr-up shirts the day before.

As the game ended, fans chanted "UVA UVA" and players flashed plackards with the number "1" on them to the crowd in appreciation.

UVA Men Play First Game Since Love Murder, Another Huguely Incident Surfaces

The men's lacrosse team at the UNiversity of Virginia had their first NCAA tournament game yesterday against Mount St. Marys. It was the first time back on the field for either lacrosse squad after the death of womne's player Yeardley Love.

Meanwhile, a 2009 incident with Huguely and another teammate has been made public- and the University supported Head Coach Dom Starsia and his approach.

University spokeswoman Carol Wood said George Huguely and an unnamed player went to men's lacrosse coach Dom Starsia days after the February 2009 incident. They told him they had gotten into a "scuffle" but that they had worked things out.

The women's team is set to play their first NCAA playoff game Sunday.

Funeral For Yeardley Love In Baltimore

Friends and family of Yeardley Love gathered this morning at The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen church on N. Charles Street in Baltimore to celebrate the life of the murdered University of Virginia lacrosse player Yeardley Love.

Many of Love's teamates from the University of Virginia arrived together by bus for the service which lasted about 90 minutes.

The program for the service also included an essay Love had written when she was just a freshman at Notre Dame Prep.

Love's family asked for donations to two funds created in Yeardley's memory rather than flowers...

Reports: Love Feared Huguely, Previous Fights Investigated...

Police in Virginia are investigating the idea that reports that a slain University of Virginia women's lacrosse player and the men's lacrosse player charged in her
death had been involved in previous altercations.

Charlottesville Police Chief Tim Longo said Friday that there have been several reports suggesting prior incidents between the two, including one at a bar the day before Love was found dead.

Longo says his police department is interviewing people to confirm or dispel those accounts. Others are coming forward saying that Love even received death threats.

UVa Prepares For Love Vigil, Huguely Has A Past...

Wednesday night's vigil for Yeardley Love at the McIntire Amphitheater on the UVA campus will be public and open to the entire university and Charlottesville community.

The vigil begins at 8pm.

President John Casteen, Student Council President Colin Hood and fourth-year class President Sarah Elaine Hart will deliver remarks at the vigil, all accompanied by musical tributes and a candlelight vigil.

Hood said the entire program will last about an hour.

Other developments Wednesday: A police officer in southwest Virginia says she arrested Huguely in the town of Lexington back in November of 2008.

Officer R.L. Moss says Huguely was arrested for public intoxication after leaving a fraternity party at Washington & Lee University. The arresting officer said Huguely was yelling obscenities and threatening to kill her.

Moss shocked Huguely with a stun gun after resisting arrest for public intoxication.

She said in a statement Tuesday that she felt it necessary to use the stun gun because Huguely became abusive, and his size was "no match" for her.

Officer Moss says she wasn't surprised that Huguely turned physical again. "Surprised that he was involved in another incident involving physical violence? No. Surprised that he was involved in an incident to this extent? Yes," said Officer Moss.

Records show Huguely pleaded guilty to two charges last year, was placed on six months of probation and given a 60-day suspended sentence.

UVA Lacrosse Death "Not Intended," Seasons To Continue

The HQ would love to know what that really means at present, but we'll leave it alone for now...

The lawyer for the defendant in the UVa lacrosse murder case told reporters that George Huguely did not intend to kill Yeardley Love, and that it was a "tragic accident."

Huguely is the accused in the murder of Love.
Both played for the university's lacrosse teams.

He appeared in a Charlottesville courtroom this morning through a video link-up from Charlottesville-Albemarle Regional Jail.

After the hearing, defense lawyer Fran Lawrence told reporters that Love's death was "not intended but an accident with a tragic outcome." Lawrence also said in a statement that Huguely would be withdrawing from the university.

BREAKING NEWS: UVa Men's Lacrosse Player Arrested In Women's Lacrosse Death

Police have identified the victim of an apparent homicide early Monday morning at an apartment complex on 14th Street in Charlottesville, Virginia. The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Yeardley Love, a member of the UVa.'s women's lacrosse team. George Huguely, a member of the men's lacrosse team, is under arrest.

Love was a fourth year University of Virginia student from Cockeysville, Maryland.

Police were called to 222 14th St. NW, Apartment 9, for a possible alcohol overdose around 2:15 a.m. Officers arrived and found Love unresponsive in the apartment. Police officers and rescue personnel who were called to the scene attempted to revive Love but were unsuccessful.

Police say preliminary investigation by detectives revealed that Love is the victim of an apparent homicide. She suffered visible physical trauma, however the specific cause of her death is undetermined pending an autopsy.

1430 UPDATE: Huguely has been charged with first-degree murder, and witnesses have told Charlottesville police that Huguely and Love were in a relationship.

Huguely is being held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.

1630 UPDATE: Pete Thamel of the New York Times, through his Twitter Feed, says no thoughts have been on-campus about the future of the lacrosse teams. "UVa AD Craig Littlepage said the future of the lacrosse teams' seasons "hasn't even entered our thoughts." Focus is on grieving students."

Groh Gone At UVA, Who's Next?

Al Groh is gone at Virginia.

It's was a long death watch here at the OSG HQ but we knew this day was coming when William & Mary beat up on the Wahoos in the season opener.

With a sorry season and a fan base becoming more and more apathetic, Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage had to pull the trigger and he did on Sunday.

"There is not a coach in the college game who has worked harder than Al Groh in trying to build a football program. Football is his life and he dedicated himself to the University and to our football team,"

Littlepage said in a statement released by the University.
"We are grateful for his service and for his commitment to his players and his coaching staff."

Groh had 2 years remaining on his contract. He and UVA came to an agreement and will receive $4.33 million.

Nice way to say "Get out."

Groh released this statement Sunday night:

I am privileged to have represented this fine University – a school from which my two sons and I have earned degrees. I hope I have represented it well.

I feel very fortunate.

I am an ordinary guy who has been lucky to have been around some extraordinary players and coaches who put me in a position to enjoy many fulfilling games and seasons – and that’s the truth.

I gave everything I had to the position and to each game.

I have coached Hall of Fame players, worked alongside Hall of Fame coaches, and coached in two Super Bowls, but my time as the Head Coach of the Virginia Cavaliers has been my most memorable coaching experience.

What I will remember the most are the players’ faces in the locker room after some of the great wins we had over legendary programs like Penn State, Florida State, and Miami; rivals North Carolina and Maryland; and in bowl games.

I sincerely appreciate the efforts of all the coaches and players who have been a part of our program – I am indebted to you. I hope the players feel that one of their most positive college experiences was playing for Al Groh.

My coaching philosophy and method of building teams has trust and teamwork as bedrocks. We were poised to solidify our position as a top team. Instead, as that trust and collaboration deteriorated, I could see this day coming.

We arrived with a set of principles that we have tried to remain faithful to and we leave with those principles intact. Change can make things better or worse. I have every confidence that this will be a positive change for the Groh family and I look forward to my next game.

To all the members of the Virginia football family: I love you and God bless you.

All sorts of names will be thrown out there. I wouldn't be surprised if someone goes down I-64 to Blacksburg to see if Bud Foster is interested. Chris Petersen at Boise State might get a call. You will hear the names of Kevin Sumlin, Brian Kelly, etc.

My guess is that Virginia will find a hot shot non-BCS head coach who wants a chance at a BCS school but won't command a king's ransom, an up and coming assistant coach or someone from the lower divisions with a track record of championships.

Let the silly season begin.
