Broseph's Bits And The Wednesday Gospel
There's something so magical and sublime about conference tournament time in college basketball. It's the perfect prelude to the madness because it's maddening how many games there are being played and at all hours of the day. The fastest way to decrease the nation's productivity is to throw on some basketball or baseball in the afternoon. It's hard to resist even for me who already works in this business. How can you turn away from the first round of the Big East tournament which will go on all day.
There's something great about giving every team in the country one more shot. The slate is clean for most teams in most conferences as even the squads with hopeless records get one more chance. There will be that eighth seed that we all will be rooting for despite not being able to pick them out on a map or naming a player who ever played there too. Oakland went 6-10 in their conference in 2005, but they won their tourney AND beat Alabama A&M in the play-in game before losing to North Carolina. The Grizzlies were 12-18 that season. How about Florida A&M in 1999 also made the field of 64 with a 12-18 record before they got blown out by Duke. The worst team was 1961 George Washington who went 9-16, but got to dance.
Some will argue that the conference tournaments are bad because they make the regular season worthless. These people don't get the essence of March Madness. These are the same people who want to get rid of the auto bids for the smaller conferences saying that they aren't one of the best teams in the nation. Those people would be wrong because the mid majors are what makes the tournament so magical. It's been a broken record in this column for me so I won't bore you with the Cinderella's who have captured the hearts and imaginations of us all.
Charlie Sheen mentioned that he keeps winning. Well the readers have been winning too if they followed my picks. Let's keep the good times going.
Utah State/New Mexico State Over 133.5 -- The battle of Aggies heats up in New Mexico as New Mexico State hopes to snap their three game losing streak. NM State has scored at least 70 points in seven of their last eight games. The team has scored less then 70 at home just three times this season. The two teams met January 22nd in Utah with USU winning 59-49. New Mexico State may score a lot, but they also play faulty defense allowing over 70 points too. Troy Gillenwater (19.3 ppg) and Hernst Laroche (11.7 ppg) lead the way for the home team. Utah State has a more balanced attack with five players scoring at least eight points per contest. This balance has helped them average 73 points per contest. They play tremendous defense at home and specialize in low scoring games there. On the road, they have been prone to higher scoring affairs putting up over 80 points at Nevada, San Jose State and Hawaii. The total is low enough that a scoring explosion by either team should help this go over.
Northwestern -3.5 -- Minnesota has been in a tailspin since their win over Northwestern on January 26th. The two teams renew acquaintances, this time, in the Wildcats' building. The Golden Gophers have lost three straight each by less then 10 points. The team's depth has been ravaged by injuries and off the court issues. Blake Hoffarber (13.9 ppg) and Trevor Mbakwe (13.9 ppg) are the main threats for Minnesota's offense which scores just under 70 points per game. Northwestern averages 72 per game and has three main scorers led by John Shurna's 16.8 points per game and Michael Thompson's 15.2 ppg. The Wildcats have hit the skids a bit, but for the most part they've taken care of business at home knocking off Iowa, Illinois and Michigan there.

Broseph's Bits And The Monday Gospel
It's Monday and there is nothing but wounded egos and a boatload of ranked teams licking their wounds. Stunning how many teams lost over the weekend giving us more of a reason to love the sport of college basketball. There aren't even that many upsets in a regular season of the NBA. Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Villanova, Florida, Texas A&M, BYU, UConn and Wisconsin all lost on Saturday. We almost saw the only undefeated team go down at Northwestern. Sunday we saw Duke dismantled by St. John's and Washington fall at rival Washington State.
These results are great for parity, but bad for those schools in the smaller conferences who desperately want an at-large bid. I had a friend tell me that St. John's wasn't worthy of a bid. You can't say that right now after the way they beat Duke. The Red Storm finished up a stretch of eight straight ranked games winning only three. It's a catch-22 for teams like that. Tons of chances to get good wins, but you have to actually win some of those games. Do you give them the benefit of the doubt because they won only three of eight during that stretch? The team that took the court on Sunday was one of the best 68 teams in the country. The team that lost to Fordham? Not so much. It's the peaks and valleys of this sport. Any team can get up for 40 minutes to knock off a rival or a ranked team.
The game that touched me the most this weekend was Hawaii and Utah State. This game fell completely under the radar mostly because those on the East Coast were well asleep. Being a college basketball geek/degenerate gambler, I threw a little something down on the Rainbows at home. Always a tough trip to go to the islands. I fired up the ESPN Radio Hawaii broadcast and sat in my apartment to listen in. I was treated to one of the best games of the season. Hawaii had a nice lead and blew it. There was an overtime and then another overtime. Unfortunately Hawaii could not pull it out. One of the best stories involving this contest was Jeremiah Ostrowski. The little used guard had played just 68 mins in eight games before Sunday morning. His father passed away suddenly just a few days before the January 30th contest. Miah, as they called him on the broadcast, went out and played inspired basketball scoring 15 points adding six assists and three steals in 38 minutes of work. The ironic thing about sports is that the best headlines/stories don't always come from the best games. Manhattan and Marist played Sunday at noon in a game that combined two teams with seven wins between them. Neither has any sort of aspirations of postseason play, but they were on TV and on the court for a pretty good contest. Michael Alvarado who is one of the Jaspers better players heaved up a shot from half-court at the buzzer to knock off the Red Foxes. The jubilation that the team felt was pretty great to see.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have Centenary. The Gentlemen as they are called are 0-23, 0-11 in the Summit Conference. It's almost painful to call up their team page and look at the schedule. This is a team that has played just six home games so far. Their closest loss was by four at home against Missouri Kansas City on January 13th. Their best chance at a win could be February 24th when they host seven win Western Illinois. Somehow Centenary played a home and home with Division II Arkansas-Monticello and lost both games to them. The Boll Weevils led wire-to-wire in both contests. Should be noted that the Centenary women's basketball team is 0-17 as well. The Ladies lost 100-36 at Oakland on Saturday. At least baseball season is coming for them soon. They at least won a game.
Overall, it was a great weekend on the college hardcourt. More weekends like this and we're going to have to find a catchy F phrase to match March Madness in February.

Utah And San Jose States To Mountain West...? UPDATE: Or not...

Is it just the HQ or is there a distinct possibility that the WAC may be disappearing right before our eyes...
Case in point... the Mountain West meetings in Las Vegas over the next two days may be presenting expansion notices to both Utah State ((who has declined the invitation to the MWC before)) and San Jose State.
That would leave the WAC with Idaho, Louisiana Tech, and New Mexico State...
That's it...
Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii are leaving the Mountain West Conference effective July of 2012. Denver, Texas State, and Texas-San Antonio are entering in the 2012 season. Denver, however, won't be a football-playing member since they don't have a squad. That gives the 2012 WAC five football teams...
Looks like this was the closest the WAC got to having any kind of national title hopes in their history...

TWTW: Boise Takes Out Utah State, Bowling In Vegas...?

Kellen Moore threw three touchdown passes, ran for another and 9th-ranked Boise State beat Utah State 50-14 in their last Western Athletic Conference game ever.
Here's Coach Pete on the win...
So, now it looks like Boise is headed to either the Las Vegas or the Holiday Bowls. Since Nevada beat Louisiana Tech, it looks like the Wolfpack are heading to San Francisco to feed the world...
The Broncos could possibly be in the Las Vegas Bowl to play the University of Utah who has already accepted an invite to the game. The Holiday Bowl remains a possibility if the Pac-10 is unable to add any more bowl eligible teams.
The University of Washington can still become bowl eligible if they are able to defeat Washington State on Saturday night. A win would likely put them into the Holiday Bowl and would likely send the Broncos to the Las Vegas Bowl.

What in the hell has happened to BYU...???
The Aggies beat the Cougars 31-16 Friday taking a 17-0 lead as the Aggies won the instate rivalry for the first time since 1993.
The USU defense kept BYU and quarterback Jake Heaps in check, sacking him twice and "holding him" to 27-of-55 for 270 yards passing.
The Cougars only rushed for 65 yards.
BYU is 1-4 for the first time since 1973, having lost four straight.

Oklahoma Struggles With Utah State 31-24
Oklahooma needed an interception by Jammel Flemming to save a 7-point victory over a Utah State team that had won only five games in the last four years.
Landry Jones threw two interceptions. DeMarco Murray ran for 218 yards with two touchdowns.
The defense struggled with all of its new secondary pieces, and Utah State turned a 21-3 deficit into a real ball game.
Save for Flemming's save at the end...
We don't have highlights, but the HQ has the next best thing...

BYU Staying In Mountain West After All...???
From the "sound and fury signifying nothing" department...
According to a report by Natalie Meisler in the Denver Post, BYU may stay in the Mountain West Conference after all. When Fresno State and Nevada left the WAC to join the Mountain West the idea kinds fell apart on its own.
The Post says a decision could come as soon as today, and the school has until September 1st to inform the Mountain West Conference that it is leaving if it wants to play as an independent starting in 2011.
When contacted by ABC 4 TV in Salt Lake City, BYU associate athletic director Duff Tittle said in an e-mail, "Nothing has changed at BYU. As we have said for weeks, we continue to explore all options."
If BYU stays in the Mountain West, its membership would be at 11 teams, so the next question would be whether or not to expand to 12 schools. Utah State, which originally received an invite from the MWC before turning it down, would be a likely candidate.
Utah State has expressed an interest after their initial "thanks, but no thanks" move. The HQ doesn't think it was a move they could afford to make in the first place...

In the whole "western football trying to eat each other's young" scenario playing out between the Mountain West and the WAC, we found out today that before Fresno State and Nevada were invited to the party to switch teams...
Utah State was...???
And they turned it down...
The HQ can't make sense of it, but we do know that tried to happen...

Don't Mess with the Mascot!
It seems as though there was a bit of a scuffle this weekend at the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nevada. During Saturday night's Semi-Final between Utah State and New Mexico State, it appears that the mascots...well got into a bit of a shoving match.

As the story goes...a Nevada fan apparently offered the Utah State Mascot $100 to pull the mustache off of the New Mexico State's mascot. That didn't sit real well, and you can probably guess what happened next.
We couldn't resist posting this story for 2 reasons. 1 because it's funny as hell, 2 because there are 2 photos of said fight. It's better to read about it than talk about it, so enjoy.

College Basketball Predictions: Western Athletic Conference
For the last few years, Nevada has ruled the pack in the WAC. That trend looks to continue as the title will go through Reno once again but Utah State could challenge it things fall their way.Best Team In The WAC - Nevada Wolf Pack:
The only thing better in Reno other than the gambling and legal brothels is Nevada basketball. Mark Fox has built a mid-major power in Reno and will continue their run of championships simply because the Wolf Pack have the best talent in the league.
Best Player In The WAC: Armon Johnson - Nevada:
He is the reigning WAC Freshman of the Year after averaging 11.5 PPG and 4 boards per as well.Team That Could Surprise: New Mexico State Aggies
NMSU boasts a talented player in sophomore Herb Pope. He was inconsistent last year as a freshman even though he wasn't cleared to play till mid season. Pope is a former High School All-American who could be the most talented player in the WAC before he leaves Las Cruses. Pope has a supporting cast that is young. Watch out for the Aggies.

Who Plays For Number 66: San Jose State
WAC Notes: Mark New Years Eve on your calendar WAC fans. That is when Nevada hosts North Carolina and the Tar Heels could be #1 in the country then. Its a big test not only for the Wolf Pack but for the league going up against the best in the ACC. The secret to Utah State's success is to protect their house. Last year the Aggies went unbeaten, 17-0, at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum and are 142-17 at home the last 10 seasons. It's by far the best home court in the WAC.
