Petersen Staying At Boise

So much for that whole "Petersen leaving to go to Stanford" thing...

In the last five years, he has been 61-5... not too shabby...

Petersen also said he has filled two vacancies on his staff, bringing back Brent Pease to be offensive coordinator. Last month, Pease accepted the job as offensive coordinator at Indiana. He takes over the spot held by Bryan Harsin, who is now the offensive coordinator at Texas.

Petersen also said quarterback coach Robert Prince will return to coach wide receivers and serve as passing game coordinator.

Kellen Moore threw three touchdown passes, ran for another and 9th-ranked Boise State beat Utah State 50-14 in their last Western Athletic Conference game ever.

So, now it looks like Boise is headed to either the Las Vegas or the Holiday Bowls. Since Nevada beat Louisiana Tech, it looks like the Wolfpack are heading to San Francisco to feed the world...

The Broncos could possibly be in the Las Vegas Bowl to play the University of Utah who has already accepted an invite to the game. The Holiday Bowl remains a possibility if the Pac-10 is unable to add any more bowl eligible teams.

The University of Washington can still become bowl eligible if they are able to defeat Washington State on Saturday night. A win would likely put them into the Holiday Bowl and would likely send the Broncos to the Las Vegas Bowl.

TWTW: Boise Puts Up 51 On Fresno

Conventional Wisdom had this game between Boise and Fresno being a lot closer than the final score gave us.

The HQ thinks the spread was in the neighborhood of 25...

At least, the prop bets we avoided were in that neighborhood
And we're glad we avoided them...

51-nothing... nice work, but is it enough work for the pollsters and pundits...

TWTW: Boise Takes Governor's Cup

As they still try to over-impress by blowing out Idaho...

Kellen Moore threw for 195 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, Chris Potter had a 76-yard punt return touchdown the first time Boise State touched the ball, and the Broncos beat Idaho 52-14.

Boise State, now 9-0/5-0 in the WAC, ran their win streak to 23 games...

Biggest question ((again)) is whether or not the Broncos did enough to keep from slipping in the alphabet standings...

Minnesota Job Search (Gophers Not Vikings). Has Phil Fulmer Thrown His Hat In The Gopher Ring?

The power brokers at the University of Minnesota believe the Gopher football program is a diamond in the rough. Millions of dollars have been spent on new facilities and a brand spankin' new stadium. Now that Tim Brewster has been let go as head coach a new leader is being sought. Deep pocketed boosters want a big name with credentials and seem to be willing to spend whatever it takes to get their guy.

They went after Gopher alum Tony Dungy but he likes his TV gig. Who's in the Minnesota cross hairs? One name has caught our attention in the OSG HQ.

That would be former Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer. According to an OSG source Fulmer has wanted to get back into the coaching arena and is looking for the right opportunity. Does Minnesota qualify?

“Minnesota has great potential, and with its new facilities it’s a place you could recruit to,’’ Fulmer told the Knoxville News Sentinel. “I believe it’s a place where you can compete.’’

Interesting.

Here's who is reportedly on the Gophers list:

Kevin Sumlin - University of Houston head coach: Sumlin was an assistant at Minnesota and has been very successful leading the Cougars. That would not be a bad hire.

Jeff Jagodzinski- Omaha Nighthawks (UFL) head coach: The Minneapolis/St. Paul media would love him, having dealt with Jags in the past he was great to get to know. Though successful at Boston College in ended badly clashing with B-C's athletic director. Still not a bad hire.

Jim Harbaugh - Stanford head coach: Can't see that happening. If Harbaugh goes back to the Big 10 its to his alma mater Michigan.

Chris Petersen - Boise State head coach: Good luck. Petersen has a great gig at Boise State. Minnesota might pay him better but is it worth it to Petersen.

Dan Mullen - Mississippi State head coach: Mullen can only take Mississippi State so far in the SEC. The Minnesota gig might be appealing because at least he might get the program to compete for championships in the Big 10. That will never happen in Starkville.

Ken Niumatalolo - Navy head coach: I'm sure Minnesota's athletic administration has seen how Paul Johnson's offense has been successful in the ACC since leaving Navy for Georgia Tech. Their would be a risk but Niumatalolo has kept the Navy program in smooth water since getting the head coaching gig.

Leslie Frazier - Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator: Reportedly interested in the gig. Frazier has been interviewed a few times for NFL head coaching jobs but hasn't landed the job. This might be that opportunity Frazier is looking for. Reportedly Tony Dungy has endorsed Frazier.

Marc Trestman - Montreal (CFL) head coach: Trestman has been very successful coaching football in Canada. Stay in the Great White North.

DeWayne Walker - New Mexico State head coach: No comment.

Al Golden - Temple head coach: We like Golden. Anyone that can make Temple football relevant has to considered for a Big 10 job. Golden might not bite though as he has been rumored as a possible successor to Joe Paterno at Penn State.

Oregon State head coach Mike Riley decided to paint his practice field blue to prepare for his trip to Boise. It didn't work all that well...

Kellen Moore went 19 of 27 passes for 288 yards, throwing for 3TD's. Doug Martin ran for 138 yards and Boise beat Oregon State 37-24. Boise State's home-winning streak is now at 57...

Boise State Rolls Over Wyoming

There were a lot of folks who thought that, after the lay-off and the win over Virginia Tech, Boise State would have problems with Wyoming and their brown endzones.

Not really... and the HQ didn't think so, either...

Kellen Moore went 23-for-30 and the Broncos had zero issues, 51-6 over the Cowboys...

DEVELOPING: Boise Hangs On In DC 33-30 Over Hokies

Kellen Moore hit Austin Pettis with a 13-yard touchdown pass with 1:09 left and Number 3 Boise State beat Number 10 Virginia Tech 33-30.

The Broncos ran out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, then had to rally themselves to extend their winning streak to 15 games.

Tyrod Taylor passed for 186 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 73 yards for the Hokies who, for the fourth straight season, took a deflating early season loss.

College Football Kicks Off

Yes it's here, college football kicks off tonight. Here are some games to look forward to.

NC State hosts South Carolina at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raileigh and the joint should be jumping. The Wolfpack faithful see a big year, The Gamecock supports think USC could surprise.

A year ago, NC State quarterback Russell Wilson, then a freshman, got his you know what handed to him by the South Carolina defense and the Gamecocks kicked the Wolfpack's backside 34-0.

The only top 25 match up of the night takes place at the Smurf Turf in Boise, Idaho as the 14th ranked Boise State Broncos host the 16th ranked Oregon Ducks.

"It's like a bowl game, like starting out with a bowl game." Boise State head coach Chris Petersen said. "That's what it is. It's a top ranked team."

It's also the biggest game to be played on the Smurf Turf ever.
