Mrs. Wilkie and the Iron Bowl

OK, first of all, in case our faithful readers did not know, Jon Nelson - founder and president of OSG Sports Media - got married over the weekend (which is why OSG was a little silent - we were all at the wedding festivities).

I tell you this to set up one of the funniest moments of the weekend.

Brother Wilkie, Mrs. Wilkie, and I were standing at the reception, admiring all of the Auburn fans in attendance. Brother Jon's wife is a HUGE supporter of the Atlanta Auburn Club, and I think the entire town of Ozark, AL was there for the wedding. The reception band came all the way up from Auburn, Alabama.

They even played War Eagle during the reception, and worked it into the wedding processional. I'm not lying, Auburn was in the house! Brother Jon is a diehard FSU fan, and did have a flaming spear on top of his groom's cake. There was SOME diversity.

Mrs. Wilkie said, "Ya know, I should go up to the new Mrs. Brother Jon and ask her if I can join the Atlanta Auburn Club. I like these people."

(NOTE: Mrs. Wilkie was born and raised in upstate New York. Trust me; it matters.)

Wilkie goes, "You don't need to join. Just say War Damn Eagle at the top of your lungs and you're in!"

Me, being the kindhearted person I am, and knowing that Mrs. Wilkie is not the biggest football fan in the world, I decide to offer my brand of advice.

"Mrs. Wilkie, here's the deal. all you have to do is walk up to any Auburn fan here, take in a deep breath, and say "Roll Tide!" as confidently as you can."

Wilkie immediately shoots me a glance, and we both smile. Mrs. Wilkie innocently said, "OK, I'll do that!"

As I'm brandishing a cheshire cat grin, a very well lubricated Auburn fan came up to Wilkie, pointed his finger at him, and said, "I heard what you said."

Wilkie immediately started backpedaling, saying "I said say War Eagle...I said say War Eagle...that wasn't me!"

Then the Toomer's Corner alum turned to Mrs. Wilkie and said, "It was you. I heard what you said."

With an innocent grin, Mrs. Wilkie said, "What did I say?"

The fan shared with Mrs. Wilkie that, "Those words...Roll Tide...have NEVER brought joy to anyone's hearts...you best stop saying those words."

At this point, Wilkie and I are literally in tears due to extreme laughter, as Mrs. Wilkie is now surrounded by Auburn faithful - getting an earful about why Auburn is better than Alabama. It was like blood in the water, and these Auburn fans were trying to convince Mrs. Wilkie (who kept saying, "I'm from New York...I don't care about football"...still with that innocent grin on her face). She let them talk...and talk...and talk...and we kept laughing our butts off.

Brother Phil comes up and asks what we're laughing so hard about.

"She's getting a crash course about the Iron Bowl!" Wilkie squeezes out between rolls of laughter (yes, I used that word on purpose).

I guess the moral of the story is this. If one is surrounded by Auburn fans, and there are adult beverages around, one must never ever mention "Roll Tide" - even in jest.

Unless you're saying you want them to roll the hell back to Tuscaloosa.

(NOTE: Everyone does know that Alabama just won back-to-back National Championships, right? And three out of the last four? Just saying...)

I'm sorry, Mrs. Wilkie. That was not the way I intended to show you the importance of the Iron Bowl.

TWTW: The Ess-E-Cee- Arkansas, LSU, And Auburn

((HT: KTHV-TV Little Rock))

The Razorbacks totaled 466 yards to Missouri State's 163. Head coach Bobby Petrino is now 4-0 in season openers at Arkansas and 8-0 for his coaching career.

Joe Adams tied an Ess-E-Cee record for two punt returns for scores... the first time the feat occured in a game since 2002.

Here's your highlights...

The HQ was at the Plains for the rough season opener for Auburn. Utah State only lost to Oklahoma by 7 last year, and was this/close t beating Auburn as they led by two scores with 3:30 left...
Chris Pallone tells you what happened from there...
((HT: WVTM-TV Birmingham))

Chad Sabadie got the privilege of a late newscast, so we have LSU-Oregon highlights for you... the game exposed Oregon's defensive issues that may keep them from repeating in a Bee-Cee-Ess title game. That'll happen when Cliff Harris isn't around...
LSU converted three of Oregon's four turnovers into 20 points and won its 34th consecutive nonconference game.

In other scores, Connor Shaw started and Stephen Garcia finished in their comeback win over East Carolina 56-37. Alabama had no problems with Nick Saban's Alma Mater, Kent, and Boomtown was happy for a day as the Florida Gators beat Florida Atlantic 41-3.

Barrett Trotter Bonks Unsuspecting Band Member

((HT: ESPN/SEC/youtube))

Some might say that throwing it away does you a lot of good...

Especially, when you bonk a member of the Auburn band to avoid a sack...

He and fellow FOSG Lisa Weiss have been making the rounds checking in on all that is good about the people, places, and things of today...

Thus, the name of the gig- "Positive" Pub...

His first stop was checking in with someone who would make TBH very happy...

Item #2: The University of Georgia Bulldogs football squad went out to Camp Sunshine to hang out with kids who have a different fight on their hands- cancer. For the last three decades, Camp Sunshine has been a place where the "C" word is the last thing on family's minds and they get the opportunity to be treated like they should be 100-percent of the time...

As normal human beings...

Once again, here's Lisa and Gil...

BREAKING: Mother Of Auburn FB Signee Bray Murdered, Father Turns Himself In To Police...

((HT: WTVM-TV Columbus))

LaGrange, Georgia Police have responded to a car accident and found a female driver with a gunshot wound to the head. The gunshot wound is believed to have been received before the accident occurred.

The victim, Tonya Bray, was transported to the West Georgia Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Jeff Jones has turned himself into police and admitted to being the person who drove up to Bray's car and shot her. Police are telling WTVM-TV in Columbus that the two have been in an 18 year relationship and have children together, but they cannot confirm if Jones and Bray were married. Jones is being held in the Troup County ((GA)) Jail, where he has been charged with murder.

Police say Jones explained that he drove up beside her car and shot her before her car veered off the road and crashed.

Tonya and Jeff are the parents of Auburn freshman Quan Bray. Bray was one of the more highly touted prospects in the country upon his signing with the Tigers. Here's his laundry list... thanks to Auburn University and their website...

1845 UPDATE: Alan Riquelmy of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer caught up with LaGrange ((GA)) Police Captain Dale Strickland. Strickland puts the time of the incident at 9:45 this morning and maintains that there was a car chase between Bray and Jones down a city street that ultimately led to the car accident and the discovery of the body.

“When the officer got there, they found a female occupant,” Strickland said. “We went up to the vehicle and the officer found the female unconscious and she had a gunshot wound.”

Here's WTVM's coverage from Monday...
Taylor Barnhill is in LaGrange

Here's the statement from Auburn head coach Gene Chizik:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Quan and his entire family during this extraordinarily difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy, but the Auburn Family will support Quan in every way possible throughout the grieving and healing process ahead. Quan is a great young man with a bright future, and we will be there for him every step of the way."

TUESDAY UPDATE: Tony Adams piece in the Ledger-Enquirer still yields few ideas as to the why...

LaGrange police today still had no idea why Jones — the father of Quan Bray — allegedly shot Tonya Bray as she was driving on Ragland Street Sunday morning. Witnesses saw a green car chasing the woman’s vehicle, then apparently pulling up beside it and firing several shots at it, striking Bray, whose vehicle then wrecked.

“The two had been together for some 18 to 20 years and had separated within the past three months, we were able to determine,” LaGrange Police Capt. Dale Strickland said today of Jones and Bray. He did not know what may have caused the alleged incident that led to the shooting.

“I’m not sure what happened. I just know that I got a call this morning,” Former Shaw ((GA)) High school head coach Charles Flowers said Sunday. Flowers is the brother of Tonya Bray.

DEVELOPING: Russell Wilson to make his "decision" today

Russell Wilson
Former NC State quarterback and NCAA record-holder Russell Wilson will be making his decision - baseball vs. football - today, according to Adam Rittenburg at the Four-Letter.

"I have to make a decision on what I’m going to do, and I hope to do that no later than July 1," Wilson told the Asheville Citizen-Times. "[Auburn and Wisconsin] are the two schools I’m looking at, but I was contacted by a lot of schools."

Some are asking how can Wilson transfer from NC State and play for anyone? Well, Wolfpack head coach Tom O'Brien and the University granted Wilson a release from the program, so that he could play his final year of eligibility at another school. Since he graduated last month - after only three years, I might add - NCAA rules state that he can sign on somewhere else and can play football immediately.

The downside about Wilson leaving baseball to play football - he'd have to pay back a significant portion of his $250,000 signing bonus from the Asheville Tourists. The Tourists are the Colorado Rockies' farm club that Wilson currently plays for, and is hitting .221 with 82 strikeouts in 181-at bats.

Facebook is spreading the decision news as well. NCSU's "Pack Pride" announced this morning that "QB Russell Wilson will announce his decision today on ESPN College Football Live. ESPN CFL will have his first interview to ask him all about it! 3:30 ET ESPN."

I'm sure Brother Jon will be happy if Wilson chooses the Tigers.

If you're unfamiliar with Wilson, check out these highlights:
