We've been waiting for this video to surface all weekend.
The eagle known as "Spirit" who fly's through the air with the greatest of ease to start Auburn's football home games, made a little detour in this weeks flight.
"Spirit" appears to either be distracted by his own reflection, looking for air conditioning or maybe has something out for one of the scribes in the Press Box as he bangs into the window sealing it off, before continuing on his way.
Honestly, though we don't particularly harbor any love for Auburn football, we've seen "Spirit" fly in person and really, it is pretty damn cool.
We looked, albeit briefly for this video on Saturday, we are glad to see it finally surface. And yes, because he wasn't hurt, we can make fun of this.

This may be our favorite story, if we had only caught it on July 29th when it happened.
Apparently, the Lee County, Alabama Sheriff's department came up with an elaborate way to catch up with over a dozen deadbeat parents. Tell them to show up at a location in Opelika and claim tickets to this years Auburn/Alabama game.
After all, what self-respecting Alabamian could resist that?

Operation "Iron Snare" didn't round up all the suspects Deputies were looking for, but it got quite a few. They mailed out over 140 letters for people with at least 5-figures of unpaid child support.
We'll try and refrain from the multiple jokes that we can make over this story. It's not the first of its kind, we've read of it working in New York with Yankees tickets too.
It just goes to prove, in the state of Alabama, they'll do anything, often without thinking about it...in order to get tickets to their version of a "Holy War".

In direct opposition to Danny Sheridan's nebulous rant and riff on the PFRN yesterday about bag men and the such, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik went on the four-letter and discussed the SanDestin incident with the NCAA and what he can't control...
Interesting. The normally, somewhat placid SEC athletics meetings last month in North Augusta, South Carolina apparently had a little excitement in them.
No, Mike Price wasn't there, but the NCAA's VP of enforcement, Julie Roe Lach was.
And she had some interesting words with Auburn coach Gene Chizik. Now, in the interest of our Auburn contingent who reads us regularly, this probably is meaningless...but.
According to the New York Times, there was a bit of a testy exchange between Lach and Chizik when Chizik pressed her about the NCAA investigation into Cam Newton and Auburn recruiting. The quote was "You'll know when we're finished and we're not finished".
The Times confirmed this after talking to several people in the room at the time.

Yes, we'll grant, this is news in large part due to the lack of news at the present time. We..and everyone else have gone into great detail of the why and what about the NCAA investigation into Auburn football and Cam Newton in particular.
This, we hope, means the NCAA is serious and not going to rush things just for the sake of it. They need to be sure that things were done right. This is an issue, they already haven't handled particularly well and they need to get it right. With the other outstanding investigations out there, they need for the schools to know they take this type of issue seriously and if you do something wrong, there will be repercussions.
LaGrange, Georgia Police have responded to a car accident and found a female driver with a gunshot wound to the head. The gunshot wound is believed to have been received before the accident occurred.
The victim, Tonya Bray, was transported to the West Georgia Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Jeff Jones has turned himself into police and admitted to being the person who drove up to Bray's car and shot her. Police are telling WTVM-TV in Columbus that the two have been in an 18 year relationship and have children together, but they cannot confirm if Jones and Bray were married. Jones is being held in the Troup County ((GA)) Jail, where he has been charged with murder.
Police say Jones explained that he drove up beside her car and shot her before her car veered off the road and crashed.
Tonya and Jeff are the parents of Auburn freshman Quan Bray. Bray was one of the more highly touted prospects in the country upon his signing with the Tigers. Here's his laundry list... thanks to Auburn University and their website...

1845 UPDATE:Alan Riquelmy of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer caught up with LaGrange ((GA)) Police Captain Dale Strickland. Strickland puts the time of the incident at 9:45 this morning and maintains that there was a car chase between Bray and Jones down a city street that ultimately led to the car accident and the discovery of the body.
“When the officer got there, they found a female occupant,” Strickland said. “We went up to the vehicle and the officer found the female unconscious and she had a gunshot wound.”

Here's the statement from Auburn head coach Gene Chizik:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Quan and his entire family during this extraordinarily difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy, but the Auburn Family will support Quan in every way possible throughout the grieving and healing process ahead. Quan is a great young man with a bright future, and we will be there for him every step of the way."
LaGrange police today still had no idea why Jones — the father of Quan Bray — allegedly shot Tonya Bray as she was driving on Ragland Street Sunday morning. Witnesses saw a green car chasing the woman’s vehicle, then apparently pulling up beside it and firing several shots at it, striking Bray, whose vehicle then wrecked.
“The two had been together for some 18 to 20 years and had separated within the past three months, we were able to determine,” LaGrange Police Capt. Dale Strickland said today of Jones and Bray. He did not know what may have caused the alleged incident that led to the shooting.
“I’m not sure what happened. I just know that I got a call this morning,” Former Shaw ((GA)) High school head coach Charles Flowers said Sunday. Flowers is the brother of Tonya Bray.
Well, it took awhile, but then again, if you look at the size and decorations on them, it isn't a total surprise that it took so long for the team to actually get them.
The item(s) in question: The Auburn University National Championship rings. They were given to the 2010 National Championship team at a low key event Sunday night at the school's athletic facilities.
Most college football fans already know the story of the 2010 Auburn Tigers, so we will spare you the pontificating. Bottom line, when all was said and done, they were the best team on the field, period. And, for whatever issues Auburn had on the field, we'd rather see them win it then a team such as Ohio State who seems to have taken the questionable off-the field issue thing to a whole new level.
Everybody knows that the Auburn Tigers finally got their time with the Commander in Chief the other day, but what you may not have known is that we now have our first official Presidential chest bump...

Russell Wilson spent his off day Tuesday from the Asheville Tourists in the Class A South Atlantic League down in Auburn, Alabama checking out the Tigers. Even though Wilson has cashed a six figure check from the Colorado Rockies he can't stay away from football. Wilson is searching for a school to play for because NC State head coach Tom O'Brien made it clear that junior Mike Glennon is his starting quarterback.
Those of us in the OSG HQ know how talented Russell Wilson is, he's third in the ACC in career touchdown passes with 76 and threw for 3,563 yards last season.
We are also imagining Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn getting his hands on Wilson for a year. Might up the win total a bit for the 2010 BCS national champions.
While Wilson is shopping around for a new school to play one ACC head coach isn't impressed. Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said this Tuesday on Mark and Mike on 620 the Buzz.
"He's a tremendous player, it'll work. I'm just uninspired by that type thing. Russell Wilson is an N.C. State football player and should leave it at that. Where is he an alum from when that happens? I don't know," Cutcliffe said.
"The intent of that rule is that truly if someone wants a graduate degree from somewhere and it's not offered at their school you can immediately be eligible. I just think that's abuse of a rule. And he's a great young man. I'm very proud that he's from our conference and tremendous representative and I hate for anybody not to have a chance. But I just personally don't like that. I don't like guys all of the sudden getting waivers...and I hate to say this but it's abuse on transfer when a family member is sick and then they waive the year of transition. Appeals bother me, they seem to be funny. All of that is easily approved is what I'm getting at."
As for the Rockies well if Wilson decides to play football this fall then a portion of his $250,000 signing bonus must be returned.
“It's a significant portion he would have to return,” Marc Gustafson, the Rockies' senior director of player development told the Asheville Citizen-Times.
Wilson did notify the Tourists that he intended to go to Auburn in persuit of resuming his football career.
“He called (Monday night) and said a lot of (college football) teams were courting him,” Gustafson said. “He said he doesn't know what he wants to do, so right now, it's all speculation.”
Does Wilson have a major league baseball career? Maybe but his focus isn't entirely there. Russell Wilson still wants to play football even on the professional level.
A Lee County ((AL)) grand jury has indicted Harvey Almorn Updyke, Junior on two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, two counts of desecrating a venerated object and two counts of unlawful damage, vandalism or theft of property from a farm animal or crop facility.
Updyke will be arraigned May 26th before Lee County Circuit Court Judge Jacob A. Walker III in the town of Opelika. He has a tentative trial date of June 20th.
The HQ is of the thought that there will be no plea agreement. But we do, somewhat, agree with Dan Patrick who would sentence "Al From Dadeville" to five years of planting trees and being banned from witnessing any Alabama football game while wearing Auburn University colors...
TBH, when told of the Patrick gambit, said that the first two ideas were fine. But no Auburn person would want Updyke to ever...

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley's office is confirming that Bobby Lowder has withdrawn his name from consideration for reappointment.
Governor Bentley's office announced a scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustee Selection Committee for next week...
Lowder, who was appointed to the Board in 1983 by Governor Wallace, was among those whom Governor Bentley reappointed a month ago. The decision to reappoint Lowder- as well as the process itself- drew criticism from the Auburn community... pretty much everyone in the Auburn community...
Lowder, you'll recall, was at the heart of the almost-hiring of then Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino- among other shady shenanigans during his tenure. And he has yet to comment publicly on this latest bout of common sense in both Montgomery and the Loveliest Village...
And this would mean, in all honesty, that Bobby Lowder would be out of his last job...
Back in April, the press secretary for current Governor Robert Bentley said Bentley's decisive vote to reappoint Lowder as an Auburn University trustee was "based on his leadership" and was not influenced by a $25,000 campaign donation from Lowder's wife.
The question being begged then: Do you REALLY want that kind of leadership on the Trustees board considering all that Lowder did and the geographical shifting that, technically, made him eligible all over again from a different Post position...???
The Selection Committee voted 3-2 to reappoint at the time. Bentley's press secretary, Jennifer Ardis, said the governor felt Auburn "has great momentum and it was important to keep the leadership team in place."
Really...
Lowder's wife, Charlotte, donated $25,000 to Bentley's campaign in September. Ardis said contributions to Bentley's campaign have not and will not influence his decision on appointees.
Sure...
But that's where the fun starts today...
Alabama Senate President Del Marsh says that he is blocking action on the nominations to the Auburn University board of trustees, and wants to restart the selection process. “I’m not pleased with the process that got us here, and I’m not alone,” said Marsh. “I think we can do better.”
Marsh controls which votes can go when in the Alabama state house, and he's feeling the heat, as an Auburn alumnus. Governor Bentley announced March 31 that he was seeking nominations, with an April 8 deadline for names to be submitted.
The committee got more than 200 submissions, but according to Talbot: Marsh said that the committee conducted no interviews and approved its recommendations just 10 days after the deadline, suggesting that it gave inadequate time to considering the nominees.
The committee recommended the approval of three new members and six from the current board, including the controversial Bobby Lowder. Lowder, former chairman of Colonial Bank, has served on the board since 1983 and is opposed by a growing number of alumni.
Marsh wants to restructure the geography on the board and where each member comes from. It has been in place since 1961.

Interesting. Brother Jon reported earlier this afternoon (Wed.) on a court hearing for Harvey Updyke, the man accused of poisoning the tree at Toomer's Corner in Opelika, Alabama. We'll use that story as the frame of reference for this one.
Mr. Updyke claims that shortly after the court hearing today, while making his way home, he stopped at a convenience store just outside of town where he alleges he was attacked and beaten by two assailants and taken to the hospital for treatment.
However, there is some question now filtering out about the truthfulness of that report. In it, Updyke and his lawyer Glennon Threatt are claiming it is true. That Updyke was cut above his head.
However, read the story closely. The store clerk at the "Tiger Express" didn't see anything and said there were no police or investigators at the store.
The blog HABOTN goes even further, revealing the lack of plausibility of both Updyke and his lawyers comments.
There is tons of speculation this is a stunt to try and get Updyke's trial taken out of Opelika. The belief is they can't get a fair trial and after the prosecution declined today to cut a plea bargain, could've made this a desperation move.
We hope that if this is a fabrication, that authorities throw the book at these clowns. With just a bit of digging it appears that may be the case. This story just gets more bizarre as it unfolds.

The lawyer for "Al From Dadeville" says prosecutors rejected a plea deal where his client would have avoided serving additional time in jail.
Defense attorney Glennon Threatt Jr. said he made what he calls a "low-ball" offer to the DA for his client, Almorn Harvey Updyke Jr., but prosecutors refused any deal. Threatt waived the preliminary hearing set for Wednesday as part of a deal for limited discovery in the case which will go before a Lee County ((AL)) grand jury next month.
“If he gives me anything now, I’m better off,” Threatt said."We had made what was an optimistic deal. As a defense lawyer my first job is to keep my client out of jail if I can. It seemed to me somebody should reach out and start negotiations."
Threatt maintains he would prefer an alternative sentencing - possibly outpatient mental health counseling, electronic monitoring and supervised probation.
Updyke is free on bond, but if he is convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Threatt said Updyke told local police when he was initially interrogated that he didn't poison the trees. One of the trees is already showing signs of the effects of the Spike80DF while the other isn't to that stage yet.
2000 UPDATE: Updyke was apparently assaulted at a nearby gas station on his way home.
He told an Opelika, Alabama officer he was attacked when he stepped out of his car at a gas station on Birmingham Highway, according to Opelika Police Captain Allan Elkins.
Updyke claims that he was punched in the head, and believes there was more than one person involved. But Elkins said Updyke didn't see who may have done it. The gas station did not have surveillance video, and there were no witnesses.
“He has not really been too cooperative at this point,” Elkins said
Updyke was treated for small bruises and scratches at a hospital.
The HQ would like to welcome Updyke to his version of hell... It has begun...

AD Jacobs put out a correspondence, that politely expressed the University's concerns...
Jacobs Sayeth Quote... Ahem... As you have probably heard or read by now, HBO will air a segment on "The State of College Athletics" tonight at 9 p.m. CT. It will be a part of the cable channel's regular "Real Sports With Bryant Gumble (sic)" show.
An HBO producer contacted Auburn Athletics seeking a comment on claims made by several former Auburn football players who said they received improper benefits either while at Auburn or while being recruited to Auburn during the previous football staff's tenure here.
While HBO's producer conceded the network had "no proof" any of the claims are true, the producer indicated the network still intended to run the interviews as part of its “State of College Athletics” piece.
We declined to be interviewed by HBO, but the following statement was provided to the show’s producer last week.
“Auburn Athletics respectfully declines to comment on these alleged claims apparently made by a few former football players. Compliance with all NCAA and Southeastern Conference rules is a major emphasis and top priority for all of our athletic programs at Auburn University.”
** In addition, we have just released the following statement from me to the media.
"We are aware that four former football players have made allegations against Auburn. While HBO confirmed to us they have no proof that any of these claims are true, we contacted both the NCAA and Southeastern Conference as soon as these allegations surfaced. We have engaged outside counsel to investigate this matter and will spare no resources to find the truth."

1230 UPDATE: McClover also claims that he purchased his college car with $7,000 he got from a booster "that he knew." Junior Rosegreen, a teammate of McClover's, says he saw McClover purchase the car with his Pell Grant moneys.
"Stanley is bitter with everybody because he blew $1.2 million at the strip club. He went to the strip club three times a week. He was making it rain with 20-, 10-, 5- and 1-dollar bills and now he's broke. He shouldn’t get mad at Coach (Tommy) Tuberville, Coach (Eddie) Gran and the Auburn Family because he blew his money."
Rosegreen also says that McClover maintains he was paid $20,000 by HBO for his presence in their special...
Our pal Brooks got a look at the upcoming episode of HBO's Real Sports, set to air today (Wednesday), and let's just say, it makes Auburn, along with a couple of other schools not look to good.
The segment in question is a piece done by Andrea Kremer talking about "Pay to Play" in College Football. And according to 4 former Auburn players featured in it, they were given money to play. And yes, Auburn fans, if you read the transcript....it doesn't sound so good for you. And there is a mention of LSU in this as well, for you folks in Baton Rouge
For their part, neither the NCAA or Auburn responded to the story though they were apparently contacted about it.
The story quotes each of the players, talking about the varying amounts they would receive, either by handshake or in book bags. Some players got more than others, it would appear, though they all got something.
As for Real Sports, this story is a part of an hour devoted to the problems inherent in college football. And it isn't necessarily kind to the NCAA, or others.
Though they aren't totally breaking new ground with the in depth look here, they are bringing to light several issues that have been simmering just under the surface for years. There have always been allegations, particularly in the SEC, that things like what Auburn is now being accused of have gone on for a long, long time.
This by far is not the only issue that needs to be addressed. We have, for years advocated that the players need to be getting a stipend for living expenses while at school. Just look at how much money the schools and the NCAA make off the players likenesses. There is no rational argument that can justify them doing this. Most college football players come from backgrounds that make it virtually impossible for them to afford doing the things that most college students do on a daily basis. That has always been an issue.
We hope this story and others will open some eyes, not as much on Auburn, although, if true, they need to be punished. But more the NCAA, an entity that for years has been making money hand-over-foot, exploiting and taking advantage of college age athletes.
They'll argue, they re-invest the money they make. We'd argue that they don't do enough of it. Prove that you are as altruistic as you claim and then maybe we'll change our tune, but not until then.

ADDENDUM: While it would be astronomically naive to have the HQ put its fingers in its collective ears about the subject, there are a few points to look at with the Auburn witch hunt ((it seems)) by HBOSports, Brooks and others...
First, McGlover was confronted by teammates and asked why he would go ahead and say what was divulged on "Real Sports." He told Ronnie Brown that it was for his foundation- and, as strange as it seems, HBO Sports cut a PSA for McGlover's "Foundation" after the interview was completed. Brown could openly refute what McGlover asserted if asked, but he wasn't by Gumbel and Company.
So much for alleged journalistic integrity...
Second, regrettably, the statute of limitations for charges such as these is four years. There are no members of the Auburn staff from the Tuberville era still employed on the Plains- unless you count Chizik's assistantship in 2004. Therefore, the NCAA can do only one of two things:
1) Still go ahead and punish the university for the environment they've created as something along the lines of repeat offender/culture of deceit status- which they've done to schools in the past because they felt like it or,
2) Go after Tuberville in his current environment and have the entire town of Lubbock commute to Indianapolis with torches, pitchforks, and firearms in tow.
Chaz Ramsey and Raven Gray talk about "anonymous" this and "unidentified" that. Troy Reddick talks about "unidentified" assistants after he was turned down for a GA job with the school.
The HQ has its journalistic side and its "poke the bear" side, too. And we're admittedly split on this particular element. If the "anonymous and unidentified" finally are given names and faces, then we're cool with what goes down in the long run. If college busts and those desperate for the reclamation of their 15 minutes are doing it just for that- then it's a shame you feel like ratting out your alma mater for something you put on your self in a time of your life you can't get back.
"I remember trying to figure out—I was just talking to my girlfriend about this yesterday—I just got my first credit card yesterday and I was talking about how nice it was not to have to choose between eating food and putting gas in my truck for once. Even though now I have money, I told her that would be helpful back when I was in college. That’s the way things were. They were late giving us our scholarship checks, we were getting money on the 17th or something like that, late on our rent checks and stuff. We struggled in college. As much as you whined and complained and tried to get money, you weren’t getting a dime. So I don’t know where all this is coming from.”
Ramsey was injured in his time on the Plains, and was recently a loser in a lawsuit against an athletic trainer who Ramsey claimed screwed up his rehab.
Charles Goldberg wrote in an al.com article that McClover's high school coach, Ken Scott at Fort Lauderdale-Dillard says that Auburn never paid any of the players that came from there.
Goldberg also details the exchange between Brown and McClover: "I found out that Stanley was talking about he had a choice to go to different colleges, and one of the reasons he chose Auburn was because they offered him money," Brown said. "So I called him. I said, 'Whoa, what is this? What is this about?'
He said, 'Well, it has nothing to do with Auburn. I was just telling my story about me trying to help kids. I figured it would be good to tell my story.'
"I said, 'What are you talking about? If you tell that story, people are going to say you were paid.' He said, 'This has nothing to do with the school. This is about me and my story, and trying to help kids.'
"I said, 'You can't implicate a school eight or nine years later. Why would you say that anyway?'"
Brown said McClover didn't have an answer.

Apparently, the number of players disputing everything-HBO is now up to 14...
For the first time since an uber Alabama fan, Harvey Updyke, revealed on Paul Finebaum's radio show that he poisoned the oak trees on Toomers Corner, Auburn and Alabama competed against each other in Tuscaloosa.
While the men's basketball game was important the recent tree poisoning was still top of mind. Bryant Somerville of ABC 33/40 in Birmingham, Alabama provided this report on the mood of the fans in the aftermath.
As far as the game it was a dandy. Alabama's JaMychal Green's tip in with 0.3 seconds left to win it for the Crimson Tide 51-49.

Glennon Threatt Jr. said he has spoken with Harvey Updyke Jr. by phone and filed a notice of appearance in Lee County ((AL)) Circuit Court.
Circuit Clerk Corinne Hurst says her office has received the faxed notice from Threatt, but it won't be official until received in person, electronically or through mail.

Threatt's office says the notice was sent through first-class mail ((insert postal service joke here)). Threatt, who represented ex-Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford in his court case last year, says he's taken this case pro bono.

Updyke is free on bond on a first-degree criminal mischief charge. Threatt says a preliminary hearing will be held March 2.
