Ooops.

He didn't "mean" to say. But he did. And no, we don't think he was doing it maliciously, but it was kind of funny.

4th quarter of last nights Dolphins/Patriots game--Chad Henne of the Dolphins tries completing a pass but misses. Jaworski said "Shit, you have to get rid of this ball".

Jaws has already apologized for it and we hope he doesn't get in serious trouble because he is one of the best TV game analysts in the business.

Lee Roy Selmon passes away

This is very sad. Pro Football Hall of Famer, University of Oklahoma legend, the greatest player in the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the driving force behind the growth of the University of South Florida football program, all apt descriptions of one Lee Roy Selmon.

Selmon died Sunday at a Tampa area hospital, just two days after suffering a massive stroke at his Tampa area home. Lee Roy Selmon was 56-years-old.

Lee Roy Selmon was an all-american football player at the University of Oklahoma. He went there and followed in the footsteps of his brother Luscious. He played on the same team as his brother Dewey.

Lee Roy was the #1 pick of the 1976 draft by the Buccaneers. He never played for another team. Six Pro Bowl nods, the 1979 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, he was just that good.

Selmon retired in 1986 but remained an active part of the Tampa Bay area. He had a restaurant, he was a banker and he helped raise the money to start the USF football program in the early '90's.

Lee Roy Selmon lived a full life. He accomplished more in his 56 years than most people do in 80. There is and has never been a person who could say anything bad about the man. He did what you are supposed to do. Be successful, be open, be personable, give back and help others.

Lee Roy Selmon, we salute you. We salute your family and we salute everything you accomplished. Peace to you and your family.

Cedric Benson to serve jail time now

This makes more sense. We, along with many others reported on Monday about Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson pleading to charges of assault. He was sentenced to 20 days in jail and fined.

Monday, Benson, or at least his attorney said the running back would wait until October, sandwiched around the Bengals bye week to serve his sentence.

So imagine the surprise of Travis County (Austin) jailers when Benson showed up last night to begin serving his sentence.

This makes more sense. It's been reported the 20-day sentence could be dropped to 7 with good behavior. And seven days just means Benson would miss his teams final exhibition game, one he wouldn't be playing in much anyway. It would allow him to return to Cincinnati next Wednesday, 4 days before the teams season opener. Plenty of time to prepare and he wouldn't miss any regular season time.

We don't know why he or his attorney didn't think of this Monday, but at least they finally figured it out.

Jeremy Shockey saves teammates life

Who knew? Carolina Panthers tight end Jeremy Shockey made a life-saving move Monday afternoon in the teams lunchroom.

Shockey's teammate Ben Hartsock, also a tight end, was choking on a piece of pork and Shockey came to the rescue. After trying the Heimlich unsuccessfully, Shockey ended up hit Hartsock in the right place on his back, causing the meat to break free from Hartsock's throat.

Much respect to Shockey for doing what he did. Needless to say, Hartsock easily could have died from that and his teammate essentially saved his life. How can you not respect that.

Both players are trying to play it off, but it is a significant deal. We don't know if the two are close or not, but they will now, probably be bonded together forever.

Cedric Benson gets 20 days in jail

Wow! Current Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson will apparently spend the 20-days in jail as punishment for an assault that took place at an Austin, Texas bar in 2010.

Benson pleaded no contest to assault charges and will along with the sentence, be fined $4,000.

He'll serve the sentence after the Bengals play on October 13th. In order to complete the time, he'll miss the bye week on the 20th and the Bengals game with the Seahawks on the 27th.

That however, is not the end of Mr. Benson's problems. He is also facing an assault charge from a fight with his former roommate back in August. There's a hearing on that case scheduled for later in the week.

Dolphins dis 'Canes by honoring Gators during game

Well, we guess it is a matter of perspective, but it is kind of odd.

The Miami Dolphins announced they will be honoring Tim Tebow and the 2009 University of Florida national championship team during halftime of the Dolphins vs. Broncos game on October 23rd.

Okay. That's swell. They are after all in the state of Florida.

But...that's not the rub. The rub is, they'll be doing it at SunLight/Landshark/Joe Robbie or whatever they call it stadium that both the Dolphins...and...wait for it, the Miami Hurricanes play in.

Okay, yeah, we'll just say it. Sure, Miami fans shouldn't be that petty. Surely there are some Gator fans in South Florida and certainly some from North Florida will make the trip down (a) to see their beloved Tebow and (b) because they are Dolphin fans.

But, yeah, if I'm a Hurricanes fan, I'd probably be a little pissed off. And while Tebow, along with Mike Pouncey of the Dolphins are the only 2 Gators playing in the game (though supposedly--Urban Meyer will be there too), they are going to get a lot of boos.

Lots of them.

But we wish the Dolphins luck, and while they are and will always be our favorite team, we don't pretend to understand many of the things they've done of late. And no, they haven't been successful.

Who knows, maybe we'll be wrong and this will payoff with a sell-out, but we kind of doubt it.

Terrelle Pryor Selected By Raiders In Supplemental Draft, Who Didn't See That Coming

Al Davis is at it again.

The Oakland Raiders selected former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the third round of the supplemental draft.

Davis loves quarterbacks with a big time arm and Pryor has that.

Would you be shocked if Pryor started a game toward the end of the 2011 season, that is if the Raiders have no chance to make the NFL playoffs.

Selecting Pryor in the supplemental draft is straight from the Al Davis playbook. If a player is an athlete, fast and some kind of questionable background that player qualifies to be a Raider.

Of course Pryor is suspended for the first five games for what he did at Ohio State. That makes sense.

It appears all the politicking and maneuvering has paid off. Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor will be one of a handful of college football players available for the NFL Supplemental Draft.

That draft will be held on Monday.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pryor, ironically, wouldn't be eligible to play until 5 games into the coming season. Hmmm. It almost sounds like someone was making a funny there since he was due to miss the first 5 games of tOSU's season had he stayed there.

Miami Dolphins to fans: Please stop posting practice video

We are posting this because it is interesting a poses some interesting questions.

The Miami Dolphins are facing off with the video camera phone and so far the phone is winning. Apparently over the past week or so, someone has been posting practice video on YouTube and the team is a bit less than thrilled about it.

The Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel spoke with Dolphins PR guru Harvey Greene who essentially is pleading with fans not to do this saying the team has rules on this. "Those rules exist so that we're not placed at a competitive disadvantage by having the teams we play see video of any portion of our practice."

This is the greatest fear of any NFL team. They are incredibly paranoid about any kind of video that shows practice plays being discovered by another team. Not that the plays won't eventually be seen, they will. Scouts will see them beginning with the 1st exhibition game.

But it poses an interesting dilemma. TV people are not allowed to shoot practice as a general rule. The video you see on the nightly news or SportsCenter is generally drills or position work. Not full-fledged plays. And there are exceptions.

But fans with camera phones are a different beast. On one hand the teams want fans there, but how do you regulate the phones? And you certainly can't stop them from posting it.

All-in-all, it's an interesting dilemma and one that TV folks have been pondering for awhile. NFL teams eventually are going to have to keep people from bringing there phones to open practices, but the bigger question is, "How do you stop them?".

Jaguars center motivates 6-year-old to relearn how to walk

This is a story that kind of wants to make you cry. It's inspiring and is why for every bad thing you can say about football players, this renews your faith in them.

This story is about Luke Akerstrom. Luke had a bad seizure in December of last year and was unable to walk. He was laid out, suffering at Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital when he got a surprise visit from Jacksonville Jaguars center Brad Meester, his wife and Jaguars PR guy Ryan Robinson. And for some reason, they all immediately bonded.

Without going into detail, the Meester's and Robinson became frequent visitors of Luke's and all but adopted Luke's parents.

It wasn't until June that Luke moved his legs for the 1st time in 6-months. A mere 5-weeks later he did something he hadn't done since his seizure on December 31st. But he wanted more than anything in the world to do it where his pal Brad could see it.

So they went to Jaguars training camp and in front of the team, Luke, got up out of his chair and took 5-steps...straight into the waiting arms of Brad Meester.

First and foremost, congratulations to Luke. And his parents. To do what he is doing takes bravery of a level few people will ever know. It's inspiring to read your story.

And second, we have an undying respect for Brad Meester and his family. And the Jaguars. For doing what they did to help a kid who needed it. That folks, is what it is all about.

Keep in mind for all the negative and bad things we report about professional athletes, there are oh, so many more who are just like Brad Meester. Guys who work hard at what they do...and get paid well for it. But there true thrill in life is to be able to do things to help other people and for that, we salute you.

Free Sav Rocca!

It appears the Washington Redskins are still waiting for their punter to get a work visa and report to camp.

New punter Sav Rocca, from Australia, has not gotten the "O.K" from the government to have said Visa and thusly show up in the U.S.

Apparently, slightly loony Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has an idea to get Rocca here. Marry an American.

We think he was kidding, but Shanahan told reporters Thursday morning Rocca has a job here in the U.S. He also said, "Eventually they'll let him go or, at least, I'm hoping they'll let him go. If not, I told him to get married to an American and that'll make it easier."

Except Rocca is already married.

Rocca, a former Australian Rules Football star, kicked for the Eagles the last few seasons and apparently made a pretty good impression, developing quite the following. Much like the Hispanic Baseball players, he's struggling probably because we aren't exactly known here in the U.S for our bureaucratic efficiency.

He'll eventually show up, and the Redskins will be fine. The only real question here, and without the video it'll be tough to tell, is whether Shanahan was kidding...or not.

Bubba Smith found dead at home

Aw man! Former NFL star and movie actor Bubba Smith was found dead at his Los Angeles home Wednesday afternoon.

Smith, an all-pro defensive end for the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers is probably better known to a generation as Hightower in the Police Academy series.

Details are yet to be released, but we are truly saddened to hear about this. A big, strong man, Smith showed a wonderful sense of humor and though not confused with an Academy Award winner, a man who seemed to have fun at everything he did.

Bubba Smith was 66-years-old.

**Update**--According to the police there were no signs of foul play and according to the coroner, it appears Smith died of natural causes.

Eagles get scare from Mike Patterson

Thankfully, he's going to be alright.

For those catching up: Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson appears to have had a seizure early this morning at the Eagles training camp in Bethlehem, PA.

The 28-year-old was quickly attended to by the Eagles training staff and taken to a nearby hospital. There were initial fears it might have been heat related, but it had yet to reach 80 degrees at the time of the incident.

We wish Patterson, who believe it or not, is the senior member of the Eagles roster, nothing but the best. Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder says Patterson will spend the night at the hospital for observation, but he's stable and seemingly in good spirits.

One other note: The first to respond and help Patterson was teammate Danny Watkins. Watkins, a rookie, is also a certified paramedic and knew how to treat.

Stop. No. Really, please don't make any jokes here, Joey was injured. And we've interviewed Joey before and really, he's a really good dude.

Former NFL and Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington was injured Sunday night when a car ran into the back of his bike on a Southeast Portland, Oregon street.

Harrington was sent to the hosptial, but not with serious injuries. Though a broken collar bone, punctured lung and gash on the head might slow him down for a few days.

Apparently, Joey has been working in radio in Portland these days. He was a former 1st round draft pick of the Detroit Lions many years ago and played briefly for the Atlanta Falcons and we believe the Miami Dolphins before retiring.

Hey, let's start singing "We are the world!". Though we can't figure out why so many Sportswriters were dancing in the street after the NFL and NFLPA settled their labor issue yesterday, the making nice with everyone has begun.

The players association put out a video this morning saying "Thanks to the fans". Which yeah, it is a nice sentiment, but at the risk of sounding cynical...what did the fans miss? Mini-camp? O-T-A's? Really, that and the "Hall of Fame Game" are going to be the only actual football anyone missed.

We won't even try and decipher the rest of this, because outside of NFL personnel guys, it won't mean anything after next week when rosters are full and teams are practicing....

Return of the Jolly Roger

It's over. And...it's over pretty much exactly when we told you it would be way back when to boot. Way back when we first started doing these stories, we speculated that this would be resolved, but not until right before training camp started.

And lo and behold, that's exactly what has happened.

We are laughing at the battle now to be the first media outlet to report the "Lockout" is over and things are settled. Really, that doesn't matter.

It's also interesting to see how everyone is calling both parties "Heroic" for their efforts in resolving this. There's no heroism here; this was plain and simple all about greed and seeing who would blink first. In the end, nobody is going to lose any money (except fans), nobody is going to miss time on the job. You are getting your football.

Our friends at NFL.com tell us the tale of what is next. Included in that: Facilities open on Tuesday. The NFLPA (not a union-for the moment) will then re-certify. Free agency allegedly will begin on Friday.

Adam Schefter of ESPN says teams can start talking trades today, though they wouldn't be official until Saturday. The teams can also start signing Unrestricted Free Agents Tuesday at noon. Those contracts wouldn't kick in until Tuesday of next week. Schefter...and others report that 10 teams will report on Wednesday, 10 on Thursday, 10 on Friday with the Jets and Texans reporting on Sunday.

And the one question we have is this: How is everyone's pal the Jolly Roger (Goodell) going to handle the spate of off-field incidents with players this offseason. Will he discipline? Can he discipline? We'll soon see.

Stay tuned NFL Fan, because the next week or so will be a bit crazy. In some respects, it sucks for baseball , who's trading deadline is this week, because they are going to be overshadowed. Yes, you NFL fan have your game back. Congratulations. Aside from the folks at the NFL Hall of Fame, nobody really lost anything...except time.

Report Terrelle Pryor may not qualify for supplemental draft

How do you like them apples Terrelle Pryor? According to a report on foxsports.com, you may not be able to participate in an NFL Supplemental Draft, because there may not be one.

Alex Marvez, the NFL writer for Fox Sports e-mailed NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello who told him if there aren't any players eligible for such a draft, there is no supplemental draft.

According to league rules, in order to qualify for said draft, "Unforseen" changes in ones circumstances must happen, not just because you decided to leave school on your own.

And before you ask, even though he would have been suspended for the first five games of 2011 at Ohio State, Pryor at no time was going to ruled ineligible.

This sounds a bit like a problem for Mr. Pryor and his fabled representative Drew Rosenhaus. It sounds to us like someone didn't think a decision through properly.

And yes, while the NFL makes decisions on the supplemental draft eligibility on a case-by-case basis, to let Pryor in at this point would set a dangerous precedent. The league tries very hard to maintain tough standards for the draft so the system doesn't get manipulated and this smells an awful lot like that.

It didn't help them either that the lockout has taken so long to be resolved. The supplemental draft may just be a casualty of timing now.

We'll see how good Rosenhaus's vaunted negotiating skills are with this one, because if Pryor sits out until 2012, he's destined to lose a lot of money.

Is he back?: Favre's return rumored in Philly

Really. Surely this can't be serious. And no I'm not calling you or Brett Favre "Shirley" either. Considering the source we'd ordinarily just write this off as Howard Eskin rambling on about nothing in particular.

But.

It's Favre. Yes, Eskin went on WCAU-TV Saturday night and threw out the rumor that the Philadelphia Eagles would consider bringing in Brett Favre to be their backup Quarterback. And yeah, we laughed when we heard it.

We don't take it too seriously because it would mean the "High-and-Mighty" Favre would have to be Michael Vick's backup, something most of us are sure he'd never do. And yes, we know he "Swore" he was done. But he did that multiple times.

What interested us more was a tweet from Vick Sunday morning. "I would be honored to have Brett Favre as a backup. That will be amazing, learning how to toy with defenses the way he did his whole career."

Either way, it ain't happening. It just made us laugh seeing this. We are pretty sure Mr. Eskin was just looking for some attention, since he attributed it to "A" source who qualified it by saying "He didn't know if Favre would even be interested in playing anymore."

Before you say it. Yes, if we are saying it isn't credible, then why are we reporting it?. We're reporting it because of who it is and as crazy and ludicrous as this sounds, anything regarding the person involved unfortunately is worth a mention.
