The story of Welles Crowther became more well known as we got closer to the anniversary of the 9-11 tragedies...

His post-Boston College career as a lacrosse player took him to one of the World trade Center towers in a carer in finance. He always wanted to do something more instead of sit behind a desk.

He rescued somewhere close to a dozen people from his tower before he lost his life when the buildings collapsed. When a story came out in the New York Times about someone wearing a red bandana doing this duty, Crowther's parents knew it was Welles.

As a tribute this weekend, UCF students got behind the idea of wearing bandannas like Crowther's in memoriam...

Did ACC Schools Screw Up Leaving For Big East...?

The question was posed considering that when the new Pac-10/11/12 deal was put on the table... with their $21-million to go with the Big 10/11/12's $18-million plus and the Ess-E-Cee's $17-million plus...

Currently, the ACC's deal is in the neighborhood of $13-million and the Big East's will be up for renewal in 2013.

So, then what...???

Remember, Miami, Boston College, and Virginia Tech all left the Big Least for the Atlantic shores and, allegedly, richer times and pastures.

UConn head men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun has even hinted to an idea that was a long time in coming- splitting the 37-member conference into football-playing and non-football-playing members. And there was also the talk of those two groups being so split up that the non's would have their own conference and the footballers would splinter off on their own and create another one ((just to create another Bee-Cee-Ess headache down the line when it comes to AQ's and non-AQ's in other sports))...

Broseph's Bits And The Thursday Gospel

Wake Forest/Boston College Over 143.5 -- These two teams take the court against each other just four days after closing out the regular season against each other. Boston College won in Chestnut Hill 84-68 in a game that really wasn't even this close. The Demon Deacons will need a lot of work on defense in the offseason considering they allow 77 points per contest. Wake Forest has given up at least 70 points in 15 of their last 16 games which all occurred in conference. The team has struggled to score at times, but as long as they are allowing this many points, the over is always in play. The Demon Deacons have four players who average at least 10 points per game led by Travis McKie (12.9 ppg). Boston College also has multiple offensive weapons in Reggie Jackson (18.3 ppg), Joe Trapani (14.4 ppg) and Corey Raji (12.7 ppg). The Eagles are averaging 72.1 points per game while giving up 69. They have scored at least 70 points in two straight games against Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. This one has shootout written all over it.

Southern California -3 -- USC and California meet in the PAC-10 conference tournament on Thursday afternoon. The Trojans have won five of their last six games including a 78-75 triumph at California. USC also knocked off Arizona and Washington during that stretch and has the size and speed to compete in this conference. They are the 29th ranked defense in the country giving up only 62.9 points per contest. They are led by Nikola Vucevic (17.7 ppg) and Jio Fontan (10.5 ppg) with three others averaging exactly 9.9 points per game. California's defense is on the other end of the spectrum allowing over 71 points per game. Sure, they score a lot (72.9 ppg), but they can't afford to get into a shoot out. The Golden Bears are a jekyll and hyde squad winning four straight after losing four straight during the season. Their win streak wasn't as impressive as USC's. We'll take the Trojans who will be fresh for this game.

Broseph's Bits And The Wednesday Gospel

The Carmelo Anthony trade is finally done. We're finally out from under this story that held us all hostage. I'm a Syracuse alum so I'm glad to see Carmelo succeeding, but this whole farce is just another reason why the NBA just doesn't do it for me. The NBA's superstars have taken control of this league and are essentially saying that they want four or five dream teams. When the Knicks pick up another superstar next season, they'll be up there with the Heat, Lakers, Bulls et al. What happens to the rest of the teams...my beloved Sixers or the Cavaliers or the Nuggets? Should they form some sort of NBA D-League for themselves? I just can't get into a league that has the same eight or ten teams vying for the title.

Compare that parity to that of the NFL or the college ranks. Green Bay wasn't one of the teams mentioned before the season began yet they hoisted the trophy come season's end. Look at Auburn...Vegas had them for only eight or nine wins depending on where you look yet they picked up the trophy. This year's college basketball tournament features a couple of teams who may win and a whole host of teams who could make things interesting. There's a lot of Butler's potentially this year in the tourney.

There's been talk that college basketball is down this year, but I just don't agree. To me, the more upsets the better. The fact that there are less dominant teams, the better in my book. I really want to hear from those people who were against the addition of three teams after this year's tourney. I have a feeling they may change their tune. I, for one, am excited for the extra games and can't wait until the Cinderella's put on their glass slippers and screw up some brackets.

Anyways, let's move on to the winners for Wednesday night.

Western Michigan -15 -- Toledo's road losing streak will be put to the test on Wednesday when they play at Western Michigan. It's a shame how poorly the Rockets are playing this season. They are a team undermanned and out-talented by all of their opponents. The team has lost all but two of their road games by at least 10 points this season. In their first meeting at home with WMU, Toledo won 73-60. Revenge will be a big factor in this one as Western Michigan isn't that bad of a team. Toledo is scoring 57.9 points per game while giving up just over 70. The Rockets have two double digit scorers in Malcolm Griffin (12.9 ppg) and Reese Holliday (10.5 ppg). Western Michigan is 15-11, 7-5 in the MAC which is good for 1st place in the Western division. They are led by Demetrius Ward (14.5 ppg) and Flenard Whitfield (13.3 ppg). The Broncos have won five of their last seven games and are coming off a tough two point loss against Kent State on the 21st. They'll get revenge against Toledo on Wednesday.

Boston College -3.5 -- The Miami Hurricanes must be getting close to setting a record for close losses in a season. Ten of their last 12 contests have been decided by single digits. Five of those were victories for the Hurricanes. This is a team that has struggled at the end of contests which could prevent them from making the NCAA Tournament. They average over 72 points per game while giving up 68. Malcolm Grant (15 ppg), Durand Scott (13.6 ppg) and Reggie Johnson (12 ppg) lead the way for the Canes. Boston College is 16-10 and firmly on the NCAA tournament bubble. The Eagles score 72.2 points per contest while giving up just over 70. They get balanced scoring from four players who average over 10 points per contest. BC has won five of their six home games in the ACC this season and will be trying to avenge a one point loss in Miami on January 15th. The Eagles have the leadership and homecourt on their side in this one.

Drake -3 -- The Bulldogs may be struggling in the Missouri Valley, but they are a different team at home. Drake gets a chance to continue their home success on Wednesday when they host Evansville. The Purple Aces won 67-51 at home on January 12th. Drake has won four of their last five home games knocking off Northern Iowa and Creighton there this month alone. Their lone loss over that span was by three points to Missouri State who is one of the better teams in the conference. Rayvonte Rice (13.9 ppg), Ryan Wedel (10.6 ppg) and Seth VanDeest (9.2 ppg) lead the way for Drake who scores only 64.2 points per game. Evansville's offense is just slightly more potent averaging 66.1 points per contest. They have one double digit scorer in Colt Ryan (14.9 ppg). The Purple Aces have lost seven of their last nine road games this season with many of them coming by double digits. The team has lost three straight and four of their last five overall so their not exactly entering this game in good form. I'll take the good home team in this one despite the worse record.

Broseph's Bits And The Tuesday Gospel

I made a disturbing discovery this past weekend. It was so bad that I actually couldn't even write anything on Monday for fear of it's consequences. Before I expose the discovery, some quick background. I'm a college basketball nerd as this column has exposed. I'll wager on anything from the Big Sky to the Ivy League. I've been known to stay up late nights to listen to Hawaii basketball on the internet. I'm someone who yearns for the days of the West Coast Conference midnight ESPN2 game on Big Mondays with Terry Gannon and Stephen Bardo. I participate in a PRE-tournament pool and spend hours researching for it even though I've only won once.

I'm hoping the above illustrated the point. I dig my college basketball and apparently lonely nights at home as well. This past weekend I experienced a first though. I hit college basketball overload and was actually repulsed by the site of any game Saturday night. It could be because I started bright and early with the Xavier - St. Louis game at 11am. After watching that Atlantic 10 game, I moved over to St. Johns and UCLA on CBS until Temple and Rhode Island took the court around 2:05. So far, so good for me as I continued to feed my appetite. We then moved on to another one of the Gospel's favorite teams to watch in Gonzaga who took on Memphis in Spokane. This game kept me going as I flipped over to Vs. from time to time to watch UNLV and BYU. Around 5:15-5:30, I began to feel this discomfort and disinterest in the sporting world. I pushed myself to watch the 1st half of the Duke-NC State game, but the Blue Devils make my blood pressure rise. Around 7 o clock or so I hit the wall. I was like a marathoner sapped of all my strength. The true test came at eight with non-BCS school St. Mary's hosting Loyola Marymount. Unfortunately this did nothing, but turn me towards bad horror movies on Netflix.

The moral of the story is that there is a limit for everyone. There's only so much I can take before I just need an episode of "House" or "How I Met Your Mother" to cleanse the palette. We even took a few days to get away from betting on college basketball. The gospel can't do THAT much longer so here's a pair of winners for tomorrow.

Wichita State -16 -- The Salukis are on a terrible streak and have a team that is wounded beyond belief. They are without three players, two of which are starters after coach Chris Lowery suspended them for violation of team and university rules. Gene Teague and Mykel Cleveland are two key players who would be needed especially for a tough road trip at Wichita State. The first time these two played on January 26th, the Shockers won 74-64. SIU meanwhile has lost eight of their last 10 games including two home losses to Drake and woeful Bradley. Even with a full lineup, Southern Illinois scores just 61.8 points per contest. They'll turn to Carlton Fay (13.1 ppg) and Mamadou Seck (10.8 ppg) for their scoring now. The Shockers are 20-4, 11-2 in the Missouri Valley. They are putting up 74.3 points per game. They do it with balance and six players who average at least six points. Wichita State pounds bad teams at home beating Illinois State by 17, Bradley by 20, Drake by 19, Evansville by 34, Alabama A&M by 22 and Nicholls State by 18. They have won five straight all by 10 or more points with all 11 of their conference wins by 10 or more as well.

Boston College/Clemson Over 134.5 -- BC snapped a three game losing streak with a 58-56 win last time out over Virginia Tech. Now they hit the road to take on Clemson Tuesday night. The Eagles are averaging 73.3 points per game while giving up just over 70. Boston College's lack of a defense showed up during a streak of 16 straight games where they gave up 65 points or more to their opponents. Some of those games they managed to keep up offensively, but unfortunately in others they fell woefully short. The Eagles rely on Reggie Jackson (17.6 ppg), Joe Trapani (14.6 ppg), Corey Raji (12.3 ppg) and Biko Paris (10.7 ppg) for offense. Clemson meanwhile has excelled on the defensive end allowing only 59.6 points per game. They have six players who average 7.9 points per game or more. The Tigers defense has been stellar giving up 56 or less in four straight. They have shown that they will run at times scoring over 70 against Miami and Georgia Tech. This series has produced two overs in the last three meetings. We think this trend will continue.

TWTW Bowling: Neh-Vad-Uh Fights Hunger Better Than BC

Rishard Matthews caught a TD pass and returned a punt for a score as 15th-ranked Nevada beat Boston College 20-13 in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Sunday night.

"Our defense was huge tonight," Neh-Vad-Uh QB Colin Kaepernick said. "When we didn't make a play they did. For most of the night it was them making plays."

Kaepernick threw for 192 yards for the Wolf Pack (now 13-1), who snapped a four-game bowl losing streak and tied a school record for wins in a season, set the last time when it played in Division I-AA.

BC Hockey Players Facing Alcohol Charges After Wreck

Three members of the Boston College NCAA championship hockey team are among seven college students facing alcohol charges after a trolley hit their SUV.

A spokesman for the Boston transit agency ((MBTA)) says Philip Samuelsson, Patrick Wey and Parker Milner are among those who will be summoned to court on charges of being minors in possession of alcohol after Sunday morning's accident. Those three athletes are all freshman Eagles hockey players.

The MBTA says that no one in the SUV was over 19 and that the driver, ID'd as Jane Stanton, was not a member of the team.

The Jeep Cherokee, apparently, was making a U-turn across the tracks when the train- which was heading in the same direction- struck it. Some people in the Jeep suffered minor injuries.

We are in the process of conducting our own investigation into the incident that occurred Sunday morning. We are thankful that that the injured students are recovering and the driver of the vehicle that was struck by the MBTA trolley had not been drinking before the incident. At this stage, contrary to reports, no one has been charged. As is our policy, we will wait until the investigations are concluded before announcing possible disciplinary actions.

Donahue to BC, pieces fall into place....

According to published reports, one of this years "Hot" coaches, Steve Donahue, will be named the head basketball coach at Boston College today.

Donahue of course was the coach at Cornell who made a run to the Sweet 16 in this years NCAA Tournament. He was at Cornell 10 years and this year was actually the Big Red's 3rd NCAA Tourney appearance in a row.

He would replace Al Skinner, who was fired two weeks ago after a long tenure at the heralded Boston school.

UPDATE:

OSG Sports talked to a person inside Boston College athletics and confirmed Steve Donohue will be offered the Eagles head coaching position. As OSG reported last week Donohue was on B.C.'s radar screen even before Al Skinner was pink slipped.

The Coaching Carousel: Skinner Gone, Floyd To UTEP

As we reported, Al Skinner was relieved of his head coaching duties with the Boston College men's basketball team or as athletic director Gene DeFilippo says, "Coach Al Skinner and I agreed it would be mutually beneficial for us to part ways,"

In a statement released by Boston College, DeFilippo added, "We discussed our philosophical differences and our concern for the future of our basketball program."

Skinner wasn't on the same page as DeFilippo and of course his employment was terminated.

As stated earlier, look for Cornell head coach Steve Donohue to be in B.C.'s cross hairs. Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker could also be in the mix.

Meanwhile down in the west Texas town of El Paso, The El Paso Times and the Associated Press is reporting that Tim Floyd will be introduced as UTEP's new head coach. The A.P. cites UTEP spokesman Jeff Darby who says that Floyd is the new Miners men's basketball head coach and will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Floyd spent 8 years at UTEP on Don Haskins' staff from 1978 - 1986.

Skinner will be fired...Don't mess with Gene DeFilipppo

Well, it looks like Al Skinner is going to be fired as Boston College's Head Basketball Coach today. In fact, he already has according to reports. Skinner, who interviewed for the vacant St. Johns opening on Friday was notified late last night that he'd no longer be Boston College's coach.

We find this situation utterly fascinating for several reasons. BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo apparently does not want his coaches climbing aboard the carousel if they are under his employ. On several levels, that is kind of cool. When former football coach Jeff Jagodzinski went interviewing for a job with the Jets, DeFillippo didn't wait to see if he got the job, he just fired him. This sounds like a very similar thing.

The ironic thing is that Skinner isn't even the favorite to get the St.Johns job, Steve Lavin is. Skinner, who has had some success at BC will no doubt find a job coaching somewhere else but we just are amazed at the response in Boston.

In this era of zero loyalty and coaches just randomly jumping from one job to another for a little more money, it is refreshing that someone is taking a stand. Most schools just rollover and well, watch as their coach, in a lot of cases, the guy who improved the team and schools standing a lot, just walk out the door when a bigger school comes and courts them.

In this case, St. Johns isn't necessarily a better job and we do kind of wonder what Skinner was thinking. But he's a grown up too, and should have known that this scenario could have played out and it did.

Now DeFilippo will turn to the smaller school ranks and look for a new head coach himself. The negative part of his stand is that he may very well do the thing he is trying to keep his coaches from doing. While on one hand we admire the stand he is taking at BC, we also say that he is a bit hypocritical because he's doing exactly the opposite now in trying to find a coach.

OSG Sports contacted sources inside the Boston College athletic department who spoke on the condition of anonymity today and according to them Skinner is a goner. A press conference is expected this afternoon, probably around noon to announce that Al Skinner will be relieved of his coaching duties.

It appears that Boston College covets Cornell head coach Steve Donohue who led the Ivy League school to the sweet sixteen. Go ahead and pencil in Donohue at the top of Boston College's wish list.

Boston College has always been a enigma in the ACC during the Skinner era. There was talent but the effort to win seemed to be missing.

Boston College has lost both its road games thus far.

The second of those losses came on Saturday at the hands of (5) Virginia Tech to the tune of 48-14.

BC's freshman quarterback Dave Shinskie, 25, had a rough day, completing just one out of twelve pass attempts and tossing two interceptions. Replacement Mike Marscovetra, a freshman from Oakland, New Jersey, fared much better once the game was out of reach.

Marscovetra finished the day 10-of-16 passing for 114 yards and two touchdown passes.

Boston College dropped to (4-2, 2-2 ACC) on the season. The Eagles next play North Carolina State at home.

Herzlich Battling Cancer

Boston College All-American linebacker Mark Herzlich revealed Thursday he has cancer. Herzlich was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a malignant tumor most often found in bone or soft tissue.

Boston College sports information released this statement from Herzlich:

"This past week, I got some news nobody wants to hear. After undergoing some tests to determine the cause of some pain I had been experiencing in my leg, I learned that I have Ewing's Sarcoma.

"Obviously, I was shocked. I had been extremely focused on preparing for my senior season at Boston College and for life beyond that. Now, I must channel all that energy into facing my toughest opponent yet, and that is exactly what I will do.

"I have returned to Pennsylvania to be near my family and to undergo a series of tests that will help my doctors determine the best course of treatment. I will keep you informed about my progress, but for now, I would like to ask for privacy as my family and I make some tough decisions.

"At this point, I do not know what this means for my football future, but I am determined to rid my body of this disease so that I can put that uniform back on. Thank you in advance for your prayers and concern. Together, we will fight this and win."

Herzlich was the 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was to be the anchor of the Eagle defense this year. While it's a big blow for B.C. the focus now is for Herzlich to beat this disease. Those of us at OSG are on your team and will be praying for you.

B.C. Has Found Their Man In Spaziani

Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo wants someone committed to B.C. to be his head football coach and he has found him. Defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani has been promoted to head coach of the Eagles.

Spaziani is a loyal B.C. Eagle, he's been a member of the coaching staff since 1997, the last 9 as defensive coordinator and got a head coaching audition a few years back. Let's face it, DeFilippo put the program in a tough spot firing Jeff Jagodzinski for going on a job interview with the New York Jets. Signing day is a few weeks away and the stability of the Boston College football program was in question. Promoting Spaziani at least keeps the continuity in place.

We here at OSG headquarters aren't that keen on promoting loyal assistants as head coach. It may be popular with the fans and players but those promotions tend to not work out however, B.C. didn't have much of a choice.

It's Official, Jags Jets Out Of Boston College

Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo has followed through and fired Jeff Jagodzinski as head coach. DeFilippo said Jagodzinski was fired because of a "difference of vision for the future."

DeFilippo had warned Jagodzinski on Saturday that his job would be in jeopardy if he went through with an interview with the New York Jets regarding their head coaching position. Jagodzinski met with the Jets on Tuesday night.

"A coach of his talents and personality will have many future opportunities and I am certain of his continued success." DeFilippo said.

"My family and I have enjoyed and cherished being a part of this great community," Jagodzinski said in a statement. "I would like to thank many people, especially Father Leahy and Gene DeFilippo, for the privilege to work here. I am so proud of what these student-athletes and our staff have accomplished during our tenure here. I wish everyone at Boston College the best in the years to come, both on and off the field."

No Surprise...

To the surprise of well, no one, Boston College has fired Head Football Coach Jeff Jagodzinski. The announcement, to the surprise of well, nobody was made by BC Athletic Director Gene DiFilippo at a Wednesday afternoon press conference.

DiFilippo did not take questions at the presser in which he announced that as difficult a decision that it was, he needed to make it in order to find someone "Committed" to the BC Football program. He also added that he has "Already begun the search for a new head coach".

What about Jags?

Fear not for Coach Jags. Though he probably won't end up getting the Jets job, he will land on his feet. There are several reports saying that he may end up as the Offensive Coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.

Quite frankly, this whole situation is a new twist for the Coaching Carousel. Normally coaches come and go and interview for jobs as they please, this is the first time we have ever heard of a coach losing a job for "Interviewing" for another. Though we don't necessarily agree with the tone of how DiFilippo handled this one. We do agree that there needs to be something in place to keep coaches from freely jumping from job to job whenever they feel like it.
