Christy Martin Claims Sex Discrimination Cost Her A Win

Gloria Allred is saying that "sex discrimination" was behind the ref's decision to stop the June 4th bout because of a broken right hand for her client, Christy Martin, against Dakota Stone.

Martin's appeal is being heard Monday by the California State Athletic Commission.

Allred claims that a fight involving a male boxer in similar circumstances "would not have been stopped and that officials acted on a misguided notion of female lack of toughness or a greater need to protect female fighters."

Here's the highlights of the fight...

Martin was winning on all three scorecards when the ring doctor stopped the fight.

Bernard Hopkins Becomes Oldest To Win Title

He won the WBC light heavyweight title from Jean Pascal at the age of 46.

Hopkins (52-5-2) broke the age record set by George Foreman in a heavyweight title victory over Michael Moorer in 1994. Hopkins won at 46 years, 4 months, 6 days. Foreman was 45 years, 10 months.

He won the WBC, IBO and The Ring magazine titles from the 28-year-old Pascal (26-2-1), the Montreal fighter in front of 17,560 at the Bell Centre in his home town.

"He's a great champion. He has great defense and a lot of tricks. I was a young champion," Pascal said of Hopkins in the ring afterward. "These two fights will help take me to the next level. I learned a lot from Bernard and his style."

The bout was a rematch of their Dec. 18 draw in Quebec City.

"I won't retire until I'm 50," Hopkins said.

And for a guy who was doing push-ups in the ring in the seventh round, the HQ doesn't doubt it... one bit...

Ozzie Subs For Jose In Boxing, Promoted Pissed

Get this...

Ozzie Canseco showed up as his brother Jose for a celebrity boxing match over the weekend at the Hollywood, Florida Hard Rock, according to Dave Hyde in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

"A bait-and-switch," promoter Damon Feldman told Hyde. "I'm disgusted."

Feldman claims he paid Jose $5,000 leading up to the fight with plans to pay him an additional $5,000 when he showed.

"The guy I thought was Jose kept asking me to pay him in cash before [the fight]," Feldman said. "I told him I had to pay him by check for business reasons. He said he needed cash. We went back and forth."

Ozzie, who has switched out for Jose in the past, never was allowed to box and received a police escort out of the Hard Rock.

Understandable...

Feldman has said he did not pay Ozzie the $5,000 for showing up as a Canseco and wants the original $5,000 he paid Jose back.

Here's what happened one of the last times Jose tried to celebrity box...

Maybe there was a reason Jose didn't want to fight after all...

Shannon Briggs Suing Management Over Klitschko Purse

((HT: PPV/Youtube))

This really doesn't surprise anyone here...

Shannon Briggs has sued his management company, claiming he has not been paid most of the $750,000 promised to him for last year's title bout against Vitali Klitschko that left him in the hospital for almost two weeks.

The lawsuit filed in New York state court seeks unspecified damages from The Empire Sports and Entertainment and its executives.

Briggs lost last October in a unanimous decision, and the suit says Briggs has only received $25,000 for the fight so far.

Briggs also claims The Empire's executives maneuvered to improperly eliminate his ownership stake in the company. Shelly Finkel, Empire CEO, calls the suit "ridiculous."

Here's the last round of that fight...

Briggs looks like he was out on his feet in that last round, and the sport is so messed up from top to bottom that the interest level keeps retreads around fighting for titles long after the expiration date.

Briggs, Holyfield, etc...

You know where we're coming from here... and if Briggs was smart enough to start Empire and go into management himself, he probably should have stayed there.

Why Is Evander Holyfield Still Fighting...???

The short answer is: "Probably, because he needs the money..."

At the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, Holyfield was trying to win the WBF heavyweight title from Sherman "The Tank" Williams...

From all indications, Holyfield was winnig the first two of three rounds, but after a head butt and a "clash of heads," the fight was declared a no contest...

Here's the last half of the fight...
Al Bernstein's commentary is priceless...

Holyfield wants a rematch...
Ugh...

"I'll just have to make an adjustment," Holyfield said. "I've had 11 setbacks [counting Saturday's no-contest] but I don't quit. I'll shake it off and I'll be back."

Holyfield's next scheduled fight is in Denmark on March 5 against Brian Neilsen.

First Successful woman's boxer Christy Martin stabbed and shot by husband...

Christy and Jim Martin/Courtesy: tom burton-orlando sentinel
This isn't good. 42-year old Christy Martin who gained notoriety for being the first successful woman's boxer back in the early 1990's is in a hospital after an apparently nasty incident involving her husband.

Police say that Jim Martin was shot and stabbed by Jim Martin in their Apopka, Florida home. She apparently managed to get out of the house and flag down a passing motorist who called 9-1-1.

Read more from the Orlando Sentinel RIGHT HERE

Police apparently are still looking for Jim Martin and say that they were called to the couple's home twice on Tuesday.

Christy had not given up the fight game, her last fight was a little over a year ago. The couple ran a boxing gym in the Apopka area.

Jose Canseco Fights A 60-Year-Old

Obviously, the HQ thinks that this is a sign as to what the world is coming to... to end a sentence in a preopsition...

46-year-old Jose Canseco fought 60-year-old Assistant AD at Arkansas-Little Rock Gary Hogan. Yes, we know it was for charity... but it was still god-awful ugly...

We also wonder what Canseco was paid to spar in Little Rock before the Travelers game.

There was no winner, except for, of course, the charity...
Here's the painful video...

Pacquiao makes them say Wow!

In front of 51,000 fight fans at Jerry World in Dallas, Manny Pacquiao dominated Joshua Clottey in their WBO Middleweight title fight Saturday night.

Pacquiao according to judges won almost every round and on some cards scored a shutout...dominating Clottey in workman-like fashion.

Pacquiao who most thought would be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr., ended up fighting in front of one of the biggest crowds ever to see a live boxing event.
