Police investigators outside of Houston are investigating a drowning in the swimming pool at the home of Houston Texans DE Antonio Smith.
25 people stayed at Smith's house last night and are all being questioned as a body was found at the bottom of the pool around 9AM. The last, witnesses say, the victim was seen was around 2AM.
For now, foul play is not suspected and an autopsy is underway.
Smith was holding a private party for close to 100 people...

This is, well, a bit odd. And it happened Sunday afternoon at the Philadelphia Phillies versus Florida Marlins game.
Here's the set-up: With Ryan Howard on 1st and Hunter Pence hitting during a tie game in the top of the 6th inning, Pence hits a ball to the right field wall. Florida's rightfielder jumps for it and two Phillies fans sitting in the corner reach over to try and grab it too.
Ball bounces off the wall and Pence rolls into 2nd with what appears to be a ground rule double. Florida manager Trader Jack McKeon didn't see it that way, asks for a review...and gets it.
The umps come out, toss the fans and call Pence out. Charlie Manuel blows a gasket, and he gets tossed out.

Hmmm. We thought the replay rule in baseball was only for home runs. And it appears the Phillies thought the same way. It's unfortunate the fans got tossed for interfering though, they were probably 2 of the 1500 or so actually in attendance at SunLife Stadium.

((ht: various))At least the Rice band has a sense of humor. At Saturday's game versus the University of Texas, they of the now "Longhorn Network, the band had a message.
During their show at halftime, they decided to spell out S-E-C...with a dollar sign on the "S". Nobody is really sure if it was a dig at Texas for their greed or at Texas A&M for bailing out of the Big 12...which I'm pretty sure Rice isn't in.
Either way, it's funny, so like everyone else, we'll post it.
DEVELOPING: FAMU Hoops Player Stabbed To Death, Arrest Made

From a pair of press releases- first from the Tallahassee PD...
The Tallahassee Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing at 3025 South Adams Street this morning at approximately 2:03 AM.
Officers located victim Shannon Washington in the apartment, with a knife wound to her neck.
The victim was initially treated by officers on-scene, until EMS arrived.
She was then transported to the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The victim was a FAMU student athlete, who was a member of the women’s basketball team.
TPD has been in contact with university officials.
TPD Victim Advocates have been working with the FAMU Athletic Department, and the victim’s teammates.
Suspect Starquineshia Palmer was still at the apartment upon the arrival of officers.
The investigation determined she did not live in the apartment, but traveled to Tallahassee from Central Florida to visit the victim for the weekend.
The victim and Palmer began to argue in the early morning hours, resulting in Palmer stabbing the victim with a kitchen knife.
Palmer was detained and transported to the Tallahassee Police Department where she was interviewed and subsequently charged with first degree murder.
Palmer was then transported to the Leon County Jail.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) is mourning the loss of Shannon Washington, a student and women’s basketball player.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to Shannon’s family and members of the Lady Rattlers Basketball Team,” said FAMU President James H. Ammons. “For Shannon to be killed in the prime of her life is tragic and senseless. She had so much promise as a student athlete. This is a great loss for the university and our athletic program.”
The FAMU Student Government Association will have a vigil tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the FAMU Eternal Flame to celebrate the life of Washington.
Washington was a standout basketball player at Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) earning All-American honors both seasons at IVCC.
A native of Sarasota, Fla., her success at IVCC earned her the distinction of having a replica of her jersey to be honored in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.
Washington transferred to FAMU and was expected to play this fall as a shooting guard.
“It is truly a trying situation to lose a student-athlete that has come to us to further her education and excel at her sport,” said LeDawn Gibson, FAMU’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach. “As a coach, this is the kind of incident you just hope you never have to deal with — the death of one of your players at such a young age.”
“The closeness of the students, coaches and staff at FAMU Athletics resembles that of a family,” said Derek Horne, FAMU’s director of Athletics. “Losing a family member is never easy. Our task now is to make sure we learn from this, and make as much effort at preparing our student athletes for all situations that may occur.”

BYU Likes Independence, Cougars Defeat Ole Miss Rebels In Oxford
Saturday was a statement game for BYU. In the Cougars first game as an independent BYU had to depend on their defense against Ole Miss, and that unit did the job.
BYU's defense held Ole Miss to 208 yards of total offense and forced a key fumble forced by sophomore linebacker Kyle Van Noy and recovered by Van Noy in the end zone late in the game that proved to be the winner and the Cougars prevailed in Oxford, MS 14-13

"This is one of the most satisfying victories because we were able to execute in a hostile environment." BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said in a post game press conference. " We found a way to win which says a lot. There will be many things to point out that we could have done better but we found a way to win the game.”
"We played a really good football team, and I wish them the best this season. But for us to come down in their house and pull out the win like we did showed a lot of toughness and grit." BYU quarterback Jake Heaps said after the game.
“I hate to lose one like that." Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt said in a post game press conference. " We had the ball and then that fumble happened. There were a few plays that just make you sick and you wish you had them back.”
BYU has another statement game next week against Texas. The Cougars have some momentum for that one.

Another One Goes Down To Boise State, Broncos Bust Bulldogs
What more do you want Boise State to prove that the Broncos are among the elite in college football.
Saturday night Boise State came to Atlanta to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. Once again the Broncos rose to the occasion defeating the Bulldogs 35-21.

This is another milestone in the history of Boise State football. The Broncos had never beaten a team from the SEC in four tries. With the win over Georgia Saturday night Boise State has accomplished that.
It was a hard fought physical game," said Boise State head coach Chris Petersen in a post game press conference.
"Congrats to Boise State. They just beat us tonight. They were better than we were," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said in a post game press conference. ''But SEC play hasn't even started. It's a long season. We've got to get our minds right. A game like this, no question, we know more about our football team than if we played someone and beaten them by 40. Hopefully that translates into us learning how to play better in these type of games and better see where our weaknesses are.''

Coming into this week's games, South Bend ((IN))-Washington High WR Gehrig Deiter had the top spot for receiving yards by almost 270 total yards.
Deiter expanded those numbers with, what looks like, the new national record for yards in a game with 447 yards in a 63-10 win over Elkhart-Central.
Dieter broke the 2008 mark of 421 yards set by J.D. Felice of Rose Bud ((AR)) in a game against England High.
In Washington's season opener, Dieter broke the Indiana state record with 373 receiving yards- 8th highest on the national list.
Here's the highlights of the game itself... the South Bend-Washington game is at the 3:00 mark or so...

There would be no repeat of the James Madison loss for Virginia Tech. The Hokies rolled over Appalachian State 66-13 Saturday.

Will Oklahoma be the next team to bail out on the conference known as the Big 12 who now has 9 members?
Maybe they will, maybe they won't, but it sure sounds like they are fully exploring their options. Sooner president David Boren spent the bulk of his time during a ceremony to celebrate a donation to the school answering questions about the school's future.
Boren told the Kansas City Star the decision wouldn't take long, "I don't really think this is something that is going to linger on beyond two or three weeks at the outside."
Boren also said that the Sooners have opportunities with more than one conference should they choose to move.

Interesting.
While Boren hasn't ruled out trying to resuscitate the Big 12 and stick around, he clearly is exploring all his options. Oklahoma's brand is certainly strong enough that they can pick and choose where they'd want to go. We are quite sure the Pac 12 would be happy to have them and so would the SEC, though the Sooners have rebuffed them. The Big 10 and a host of other conferences would jump at the opportunity as well.
We would not be surprised to see Oklahoma bail out either, the only surprise is that they would try and make a decision during the season. Yes, it would make things disruptive. We think they'll go and smart money is on the Pac 12. We think the Big 12 will be the 1st of the "Big Conferences" to shrivel up and go away. They might be able to survive for awhile with Texas and a variety of others, but in the current atmosphere, we don't think that would last. But we could be wrong.

Stephen F. Austin Puts Up 82 Points On McMurry
Here's the understatement from Thursday night's college football games, Stephen F. Austin had a impressive opener to the 2011 season.
The Lumberjacks put up 82 points on McMurry who's a Division III school and won the game 82-6
SFA put up 31 points in the first quarter.
It was 53-6 at halftime.
What do you think McMurry's halftime locker room was like?
SFA totaled 668 yards of total offense.

Russell Wilson Impressive In Badger Debut, Wisconsin Slays UNLV
Wisconsin fans, now you know.
Now you know why NC State fans didn't want to see Russell Wilson go.
Now you know why ACC defensive coordinators didn't sleep the week the Wolfpack were on the schedule.
Wilson's debut as a Wisconsin Badger was spectacular. He was his efficient self going 10-13 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson even rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown as Wisconsin crushed UNLV 51-17.
Russell-mania has taken over Madison, Wisconsin.

Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema said in Wisconsin's post game press conference. "Russell is a guy that has been very impressive. You’ve heard me say it a million times but I think people will see that."
"The first start was good but you have to move on and get ready for the next week." Russell Wilson said in a post game press conference. "We have a great team coming in next week and we need to prepare offensively and execute.”

Mom of Miami basketball player denies payment request

Several of the people named in the Yahoo story about rogue University of Miami booster Nevin Shapiro are vehemently denying the allegations.
Among them, the mother and two coaches of UM basketball player DeQuan Jones.
The Miami Herald reached out to Jones's mother Irene Bell who tells them "The whole thing is such a lie".
Bell says she did her homework and worked hard to provide for Jones and the thought of exploiting or taking money for her sons services would have made her walk away.
Jones's AAU coach and former high school coach added the timeline didn't add up either. They say the Yahoo story alleges the $10,000 payment request for him to come play there came after he was already committed and enrolled at the Coral Gables school.

We aren't sure who to believe here. Shapiro claims there is a witness, though Shaprio himself never met the kid and that then Miami assistant Jake Morton took care of the transaction.
The story also goes on to mention Irene Bell didn't need the money mentioned.
The quandry this poses is how do you prove all these allegations and who's story do you believe. And while the NCAA has been proactive thus far and obviously has something to work with as evidenced by the quick suspension of 8 current UM football players earlier this week, the older charges are going to be much harder to prove.
And as much as most Hurricane supporters and almost all journalists want this to be finished already, it's going to take a long time. We don't believe that every allegation made by Shapiro will be proven, quite honestly, we'll guess that maybe 50-percent get proven. But it will be enough to get the school in serious trouble or shut down as many writers have suggested? Well, that remains to be seen...

Ooopsie! More problems for those Buckeyes up there in Columbus, Ohio.
Three players, two of them starters will not play in the season opener/practice game this Saturday against Akron.
The reason...the apparently got some "Impermissible benefits" at a charity event earlier this year. And they had not been cleared to attend the event from the schools compliance department.
Running back Jordan Hall, cornerback Travis Howard and backup safety Corey Brown will sit at least one game and possibly more.
The incident popped up this spring when the NCAA was in the midst of investigating Terrelle Pryor. Which begs the question...why wait until now to mention it?

By now, most are already familiar with the issues facing the Buckeyes in the eyes of the NCAA, so we will spare you the details. Suffice to say, there is some work ahead. And while this latest problem is not an indication of further serious issues, it just really doesn't look to good.
Thankfully for Ohio State they play, for the most part, schools such as Akron for the first 4 or 5 games, so losing starters for a short period of time won't kill them.

DEVELOPING: McCourt Offered $1.2B For Dodgers...???
It appears that Frank McCourt may be out of his mess with the LA Dodgers...
The founder of the LA Marathon, Bill Burke, along with some Chinese investors, apparently have offered $1.2B for the Dodgers, all associated real estate, and media deals...
The whole f'n show...
The deal is all cash and will be on the table for three weeks. No word on whether or not either Frank or Jamie McCourt has received any correspondence from Burke or any of Burke's representatives.
