Oops...S.Carolina QB coach arrested--Updated

George Mangus/Courtesy: WSPA/Greeneville City Police
((ht:wspa.com))

**UPDATE AT BOTTOM OF STORY**

Well, there's always a way to make an impression. However University of South Carolina Quarterback Coach George Mangus, probably didn't make a very good impression when he was arrested early Tuesday morning in Greeneville, South Carolina.

Mangus was arrested on a nuisance conduct charge after 2 police officers saw him peeing on a street while they drove by. They suspected him of being drunk, but didn't charge him for that.

Mangus was cuffed and booked and as of 10:30 Wednesday morning, was still in the Greeneville County Detention Center.

No word yet on what the 'Ol Ball Coach is going to have to say about this one and for that matter, it is starting to sound like Mangus may need some help getting out of the pokey.

We'll let you know if he's set free...

--Update-- Yes, he's been set free. And he's been suspended indefinitely by his boss Steve Spurrier until the matter is resolved.

SEC Media Days: The only thing that could trump the NFL in the south

SEC Media Days 2008/Courtesy: Me
Arguably, whatever portion of the Sports Media world isn't in Atlanta today, is in Birmingham, Alabama.

Why you ask? Because it is the Daytona 500 of the SEC season, the kickoff to all that is southern in football, it's SEC Media Days.

For those who don't know, Media Days brings together oh, say, about 1000 members of the SEC media to pepper, cajole and tweak SEC football coaches and players for three days about the upcoming football season.

To say the event is somewhat chaotic would be being polite to the word chaotic. The reason: Those 1000 media types are in a ballroom area, roughly the size of a good sized Chili's restaurant. And yes, there are media people falling all-over each other to get the "Money" shot....coaches and players "Walking".

So you ask, how do you know so much about this event? Well, that would be because I covered it for several years. And you'll have to take my word for it that I'm probably underselling the chaos.

Anyway, day 1 featured one of our favorite coaches to quote, the ever quotable "Ol' Ball Coach", Steve Spurrier.

Here's what he said about his quarterback Stephen Garcia, who though suspended, is expected to run his team this year. "I guess we just don't want to kick him out for stupidity."--Nice

From Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino: "It's good to be here in Birmingham again for Media Days. I always wonder when I say that how to keep a straight face."--What's with the humor dude?

Al.com qutoes Mississppi State running back Vick Ballard after being asked about the day being the most talking he's ever done. "Yes, it is. My jaws are tired."

And this quote from Florida quarterback John Brantley on coach Will Muschamp who has associations with Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Alabama coach Nick Saban. "We don't really speak about those stories too  much. We just try to think about when he was growing up in Gainesville, and we'll leave it at that."

And Muschamp was asked this, "How does it feel being a Georgia guy coaching at the University of Florida? I'm a Florida guy."

South Carolina starting Safety busted for D.U.I

((ht: wltx-tv))

It hasn't been a great "Off-the field" season thus far for SEC East Media darlings, the University of South Carolina.

From the well-documented problems of starting/suspended for now qb Stephen Garcia, to the freshman backup cornerback dismissed from the team last week, to now this.

Starting safety DeVonte Holloman was stopped at a D.U.I checkpoint in Columbia, South Carolina late Friday night and summarily arrested on charges of driving under the influence.

More from WLTX-TV RIGHT HERE

Holloman is a key contributor to the Gamecock's defense and is being counted on heavily this coming season. The school, nor coach Steve Spurrier have commented at this point.

We suspect they will wait and see what happens in court, hopefully it will be handled better than Mr. Garcia's issues.

Garcia Suspended For Spring Practice... Again...

((HT: WLTX-TV Columbia))

It's not like this hasn't happened before or anything...
But South Carolina QB Stephen Garcia has been suspended for spring practice for a week in his third year of being immature in a row. It was for the ever-popular violation of team rules...

Unspecified, of course...

"This was something that happened earlier and that we're just getting around to finally handling," Spurrier said after practice. "He's actually been good this semester. This was something that happened in the past."

Let the competition begin for the QB position- again...
The HQ thinks, however, that Connor Shaw is a better passer in the system and won't lead with his head when going for first down yardage...

TWTW: And Troy Runs The Spread...???

((HT: Youtube))

It, simply, was not Troy's day...

After half the first quarter was over, South Carolina led 21-0. Marcus Lattimore had three touchdowns and 86 yards on his first four carries. Troy fumbled the opening kickoff and it was even more downhill from there...

“First half, certainly one of the worst halves of football I’ve ever experienced as a coach or a player,” Troy coach Larry Blakeney said. “It was almost like President Bush’s shock and awe. We act like we haven’t ever seen a football field.”

The 56 halftime points USC had were the most in a half in school history, and the 69was South Carolina’s largest since it beat Kent State 77-14 in 1995.

Here's postgame from the OBC...

TWTW: Auburn Comes From Behind Again, Survives USC

((HT: WLTX-TV Columbia))

Okay, full disclosure here...
After the game with your Shorter Hawks won in overtime over Georgetown 47-46 in OT, it was a two-and-a-half hour drive for yours truly to the Plains and the South Carolina game with TBH.

The HQ ran into The Chiz in Columbus the night before at a high school game and after volunteering a "War Cam Eagle," he said "I wouldn't go there yet."

After 334 yards of responsible offense, we may be getting closer...

Down 20-7, the Tigers came back again to win 35-27...
And there were plenty of gray hairs to go around after that as the Auburn faithful prepare for Louisiana-Monroe...

The larger questions... what happens when Arkansas is on the docket...???
Answer: Make everything happen in front of you...

Question 2: Does Stephen Garcia know who he is, and more accurately, does he know where he is after getting knocked silly by the Auburn defense...???
Answer: Probably, not... that is why Flowery Branch ((GA)) HS grad Connor Shaw will get more reps at QB in the near future...

Here's the OBC postgame...

South Carolina may have bigger problems than just agent issues...

S.Carolina coach Steve Spurrier/Courtesy: coacheshotseat.com
We reported on South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders being suspended from the team last week and when we did, something caught our eye in the story we linked to. We hadn't heard anything about it, but it didn't sound really good.

Now, Saunders, his issues include violating a team rule, believed to be showing up late to practice and then lying about why and also there is a little investigation as to his potential involvement with an agent party that several players were involved with.

As for the, well, newest issue...it may be the biggest of them all. It appears that Saunders, along with at least 10 other players were living in a rather nice Columbia area hotel for what appears to be a rather discounted rate.

More on this from the state.com or more specifically their GoGamecocks.com section... RIGHT HERE

Of course, the article goes on to quote the 'Ol Ball Coach as saying this isn't a distraction. We don't buy that...for a minute.

The players, to comply with an NCAA rule, would end up paying the hotel...The Whitney $5000 or more to make up the difference. We are pretty sure that they don't have that kind of money.

This is indicative of a larger problem that we have seen, particularly in the South where college players are afforded luxuries that most other people wouldn't get. It cropped up with the recent Bar Knoxville arrests of some Tennessee football players. While we understand that the players don't usually have a lot of pocket change to spend on things, this sort of practice is ultimately against the NCAA rules.

The NCAA is investigating the South Carolina incident as a part of their current investigation into Saunders. The combination of issues beginning to pop up would indicate they may be busy for awhile.

Enjoy Coach Spurrier who seems resigned to the thought of getting some penalties from the NCAA. Thanks WLTX-TV in Columbia:

Weslye Saunders suspended...Temporarily for now...

Weslye Saunders//Courtesy: al.com
The 'ol ball coach is vetting out some discipline these days. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier announced Monday night that star Tight End Weslye Saunders has been "temporarily suspended" for apparently violating some team rules.

We probably should add here that Saunders is a part of the NCAA investigation into the South Beach player/agent party, but Spurrier was adamant that was not the reason for the suspension.

The Ball Coach also had to clarify a situation that apparently popped up where Saunders' was part of a group of players living in an area hotel. Hmmm....hadn't heard about that one.

In the meantime, Columbia's thestate.com tries to make sense of it all...read it RIGHT HERE

This, well, isn't looking very good for the Gamecocks. Saunders seems to have a rather lengthy list of questionable decisions here, even if the South Beach incident isn't true.

He was supposed to be the best receiver on the team this season, on the watch list for the Mackey award and a surefire NFL draft pick.

Saunders may still pan out that way, Spurrier was emphatic that it was for a "Team Rules Violation" and wouldn't elaborate as to how long the suspension will be in place. We guess that a peek at the starting lineup or guys who dress for next weeks season opener against Southern Mississippi will be the answer to that question.

Here is sound from the 'ol ball coach his ownself....Thanks WLTX-TV:

TWTW: So Much For That "Spiller For Heisman" Talk...

((HT: WOLO-TV/Columbia))

37 total yards of offense for someone touted as a Heisman hopeful... but, yes, CJ Spiller did have a very pretty kickoff return for a TD- his 7th and a record...

But that wasn't going to do it for Clemson as they lose to the OBC and South Carolina 34-17...

The Tigers 6-game win streak in the series is kaput...

Spurrier Disappointed In Geathers

((HT: WLTX-TV))

USC Head Coach Steve Spurrier has issued his first statement on the arrest of one of his players this past weekend.

Defensive lineman Clifton Geathers ((mugshot pictured, thanks WLTX-TV)) was arrested early Sunday morning after a fight at a Columbia nightclub.

"We are disappointed in the actions of Clifton Geathers the other night," Spurrier said in a written statement. "He has been suspended indefinitely from the team until all the facts come in."'

Police say at 3:10 a.m., Columbia police responded to a call about a fight at Club ICE on Lady Street in the Vista.

When they got there, that's when police say they tried to break up the crowd in the parking lot to get to two people fighting closer to the building.

As police got up on the fight, that's when they realized a security guard at ICE and 21-year-old Geathers were in a brawl.

They say they tried to handcuff Geathers but he was resisting, flailing his arms, and yelling obscenities.

Police say it took two officers to finally get the football player in handcuffs. They say he refused to comply and smelled of alcohol.

Geathers has been charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and drunkenness.

He is out on bond.

Those of us at OSG HQ think that Geathers indefinite suspension will last a definite period of time- at least until the first conference game...

Finebaum: OBC Talks Urban To Irish

((HT: AJC/Hartstein))

There is no offseason when it comes to Steve Spurrier’s ability to stir things up.
Without prompting, the Head Ball Coach this week brought up rumors about Florida coach Urban Meyer ((HT: volnation.com)) bolting for Notre Dame.

Audio: Spurrier radio interview

In a long interview on the Paul Finebaum Radio Network, Spurrier called Meyer one of the nation’s top coaches, then digressed.

“They’ve still got that rumor going down there, Paul, that if he has about one more big year he might be the Notre Dame coach,” Spurrier said. “I know you’ve heard that rumor.”
Finebaum chimed in that “people at Notre Dame firmly believe” Meyer will jump to South Bend next year.

Meyer grew up in Ohio and has repeatedly referred to Notre Dame as his “dream job.” But he chose Florida over the Irish in 2004.

“It’d be surprising if he left, but who knows?” said Spurrier, the former Gators coach now heading South Carolina. “He’s accomplished so much. I mean, I left after 12 years because I just said, ‘Hey, I’ve done enough. Try something else.’ He may get to the point where he needs to try something else. Who knows?”

Confirming that he was speaking off the cuff, Spurrer added: “Maybe it was his dream job and not anymore. I don’t know.”

Teeing it Up

OSG Sports got the opportunity yesterday to attend an event that can only be described as "Interesting". We were in attendance yesterday at the 3rd annual "Chick Fil-A Bowl Coaches Golf Tournament". Unfortunately for Chick Fil-A, this year attendance was down to 5 groups of 4.

It's always intersting to us to see a gathering of College Football Coaches and particularly one like this where it is mostly coaches, a few odd boosters and even fewer members of the media. They generally seem to enjoy the event, put on at Reynolds Plantation in Middle of Nowhere, Georgia and if you looked carefully, there was actually some bonding going on.

We saw Steve Spurrier and Jim Grobe yucking it up on the course along with the Johnson's, Paul and Bobby who were paired together. Seeing Nick Saban and Houston Nutt eating lunch and visiting for a long while also struck us as interesting, but a good thing.

While it would be nice for regular Joe's to get opportunities to play in Charity Golf Tournaments such as this one, for once it was actually nice to see these guys getting along off of the field and some of them are actually pretty good golfers. We saw Paul Johnson hit a 100 yard approach inside of 3 feet on 16. Your winners, for the 2nd year in a row, the 'Ol Ball Coach and his playing partner, Sterling Sharpe.

Could The Head Ball Coach Be Heading To Auburn

WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama is reporting that Auburn may... may offer its head coaching job to Steve Spurrier. WSFA is citing sources within the coaching profession saying their is strong indications that the head ball coach is Auburn's top choice.

Spurrier is saying that his coaching future is at South Carolina. Are we seeing some posturing? Our question is why? Why would Spurrier go to Auburn? Maybe the challenge of putting down a coach in the state of Alabama that has a even bigger ego. That would be Nick Saban.

OSG sources tell us that the Spurrier offer is a reach but it's Auburn and nothing would be a surprise.

We do know that TCU head coach Gary Patterson was interviewed Thursday. The 7th candidate to do so.

Jay Jacobs, whose next to perform on Auburn's version of America's Coaching Idol.
UPDATE:
Fox 10 in Mobile - Pensacola reported late last night that Will Muschamp will "likely" be announced as the new head football coach at Auburn. Muschamp has denied that report and told the Atlanta Journal Constitution: “I have not talked to Auburn about this job and I have no interest in the job,” said Muschamp. “I really don’t know what else to say. I’m going to stay at Texas until they fire me.” There you go.
There's no way Muschamp is taking the Auburn gig. He and Jay Jacobs did not part ways on the best of terms.

What Happened To The Head Ball Coach

Is it me or is the Head Ball Coach toning down his act? Steve Spurrier hasn’t really been his brash self since taking over at South Carolina. Maybe a few years working for Daniel Snyder with the Washington Redskins and then going to South Carolina, great fan base, lousy football program, will take some of the smart aleck out of you.

I remember when Spurrier was the head coach at Florida in 1996 and brought his top ranked Gators into Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas and put a whipping on the Hogs. After the game with a camera on my shoulder, I had a great shot of the head ball coach running toward the locker room in the south end zone. A group of Hog fans were screaming obscenities at Spurrier and he raised his index finger and said, “Yea but we are #1.” I had to admit, that was a great comeback.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the brash Steve Spurrier return but this South Carolina team won’t be that much to brag about.

Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel shares the same feeling as I do.

SEC Media Days, Day 3

End of the Chaos…

The end of SEC Media Days brought to a close one of the more interesting three day stretches that I’ve seen in quite a while. The “Media” traffic slowed, a little bit, but it didn’t slow the craziness, the oddness (if that really is a word) but it did give a look at what some would call a media vendetta.

Meet the Petrino…

You could have had a nice debate on day 3 as to what the big story was. For the Alabama folks, Tommy Tuberville was in the house. Tuberville however is a great guy; pretty much universally liked, has a great sense of humor and doesn’t take himself nearly as seriously as the Auburn fan base does.

The other early visitor was Kentucky’s Rich Brooks. Brooks was also somewhat of an amiable sort, he smiled a lot and like everyone else, wasn’t really sure what to expect out of his team this year.

The fireworks however were still to come. The afternoon brought the guy who is generally considered one of the true characters in College Football, Steve Spurrier and the guy who made headlines for leaving the NFL, the day after a game in the middle of the season to go back to college, Bobby Petrino.

Attack!

Upon his arrival, Petrino got pretty much the same treatment as all the “Big Name” coaches got, which was the phalanx of cameras walking with him as he walked. The Atlanta TV Stations were there as were several from the state of Arkansas.

I’ve got to say here that I never really felt sorry for Petrino before, despite the bland press conferences when he was with the Falcons and the whispers of his distant, cold and sometimes odd behavior with the folks up in Flowery Branch. He always came across as someone who would rather be anywhere other than on a podium, speaking into the lights, faces and cameras looking for something, anything that was usable to report.
This time was a little different. When he arrived into the TV rooms, the questions were all the same “Why did you leave the Falcons like you did? “Did you really hate pro football so much?” “Why did you bail out on the players like that?” His answers were pretty calm and thought out and again nothing special, the funniest, at least to me was the last question he was asked; “How will you feel if you have to come and play in Atlanta?” The answer was a good one; “I’ll be happy because that means we are playing for the SEC Championship and if we can win that, we may be playing for the national championship, that sounds like a good thought to me”.

Don’t forget the ‘Ball Coach!

I would be remiss in my duties if I didn’t mention Steve Spurrier. The guy, though he has some faults is one of a kind, an original. He had us laughing the whole time he spoke, not something easy to do in this cynical age.

The ‘Ball Coaches presser went something like this: “Well, I-hm really lookin’ forward to how our team’s gonna play this year. We got us a tall team, big and we look good in our uniforms” “We should look real good comin’ out of the tunnel. Unfortunately, I cain’t sit here and tell you if we’ll play as good as we look, we’re just gonna have to wait and see”. Great stuff, and he kept repeating this theme the whole afternoon.

Predictions…

If you read my stuff regularly, you probably know how much I hate “Pre-season Predictions”, but because I am doing my best to inform and entertain, I give the you SEC Media (70 ballots out of 700+ credentials) Predictions for the upcoming season.

SEC East
1. Florida
2. Georgia
3. Tennessee
4. South Carolina
5. Kentucky
6. Vanderbilt

Pretty much the same way the conference is picked before the season every year. In fact I don’t know that I can even remember the last time that it wasn’t picked this way.

SEC West
1. Auburn
2. LSU
3. Alabama
4. Mississippi State
5. Ole Miss
6. Arkansas

Again no surprises here, Auburn and LSU seem to just take turns in this poll. The only disappointment is Mississippi State. The Bulldogs were 8-4 last year, a pretty good team, in fact, don’t be surprised if they finish in the Top 2 here in the west.
