Tressel's E-Mails: Now We Know...Maybe...

((HT: Columbus Dispatch/Wagner, May))

Apparently, when tOSU head coach Jim Tressel acknowledged that the infamous/shot-across-the-bow e-mail warning was sent somewhere and his AD Gene Smith cut him off from any further details, we now know where they were sent...

We think...

An advisor to Terelle Pryor in his home town...

Ted Sarniak lives in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. He became friends with Pryor and had accompanied him on recruiting trips in the past. The university, however, will not identify Sarniak as a booster.

When asked by the Dispatch whether or not Tressel had passed the information in the e-mail to Sarniak, OSU officials said, "We are not discussing any issues relative to the case until it is resolved with the NCAA."

Of course not...

More when we know more...
The e-mails can be found hyah...

Your NFL Strike Update: A Fan Lawsuit (Rich vs. Rich--Day 14)

Ken Lanci/Courtesy: cleveland.com
We've now hit the 2-week mark in the NFL Strike/Lockout and low and behold, our 1st lawsuit by someone other than the NFL or NFLPA. Now granted, it may get tossed out of court, but it raises many of the same questions that we have.

Cleveland businessman Ken Lanci would be your plaintiff in the case. He is claiming among other things, that the lockout violates his PSL with the Browns and will possibly not allow him to watch a full season of home football games.

The story, from the Cleveland Plain-Dealer RIGHT HERE

Read Lanci's Lawsuit, which is versus not only the NFL, but the Browns and every team that plays in the NFL. The PDF is RIGHT HERE (thanks cleveland.com)

Here's a quote from Mr. Lanci "What tipped the scale for me is the labor issue between millionaires and billionaires and the fact they can't settle it when the country is in a recession" "Worse yet, they have to rub it in our faces"

Sound familiar? We've said essentially the same thing for 10 of the past 13 days. And we don't even own a PSL (We can't afford it and don't live in the same town as our favorite team).

God, we hope a court will take this suit seriously. The Personal Seat License (PSL) is one of the biggest scams in the history of business. And we can remember when the scam began back in the early '90's.

How can it be legal to have to pay a significant amount of money for the right to purchase a seat? And yet NFL fans have blindly done it...for years.

For someone like Mr. Lanci, who apparently is fairly wealthy himself, it probably isn't that big of a deal. For the fan who makes $30,000 a year and has to support a house and family, it's a really big deal. And yet Mr. $30,000 gladly dishes out the money. And they don't hesitate to do it.

We scoff....no we sneer at both the Owners and the Players when they say they are on the side of the "Fans". No, you aren't. You never have been. You never will.

Unfortunately, they both know that the minute they finally but their gargantuan egos aside and come to an agreement, the fans will flock back. Without thought and without hesitation. We'd love to help be the driver of change, to have the fans walk away...even if its just for a couple of weeks, to send a message. To tell both sides in this incredibly stupid "Lockout" to shut up, split your damn billions of dollars and go back to doing what you do. But don't assume that we support or can relate to any of you, we can't.

If only we could let them know that fan loyalty isn't blind when it comes to stupid "Lockouts", then maybe they might understand. It's not the "Corporate, PSL loving, Luxury Box giving RICH PEOPLE" that made you what you are, its Mr. $30,000 and people just like him who either make you a success at the box office or a complete and abject failure.

Here's some video of the last Monday Night Football game in 1987, before the strike hit that season:

Tourney Update: By Jimmer, the Gators win

Proof that you need more than one great player to win, even at the NCAA level. The Florida Gators did what they needed to do, though it took an overtime period to do it, beating the Jimmer, Jimmer Fredette and the BYU Cougars 83-74 last night.

Fredette managed to drop 32 on the Gators, but it took him 29 shots to do it. Nobody else made a major contribution. In fact, Florida took advantage with Alex Tyus having the game of his life with 19 points and 17 boards, which offeset the 11 for 34 they shot from 3-point range.

The next matchup for Florida, Butler, which may very well be one of the best games of this years tournament, or so we can hope.

Your highlights again from our friends at SI.com:

In other Thursday night action. Butler continued their run, sliding into the Elite 8 with a 61-54 win over Washington and Kemba Walker led UConn to a 74-67 win over San Diego State.

Tourney Update: Down goes Duke!

And it wasn't that close. Everyone's perennial favorite, Duke, got blasted last night in the Sweet 16. The Arizona Wildcats took it to them, winning 93-77.

Now granted, it may have been a career game for most of the Wildcats. Derrick Williams put on a show in the 1st half, scoring 25 of his 32 points. The team, well, they shot 58 percent in the second half, which was more than enough to get the win.

Day Four: Bonds On Trial

((HT: KGO-TV San Francisco))

A steroids expert told jurors in the perjury trial of Barry Bonds that the two designer drugs allegedly used by Bonds- the "clear" and the "cream"- were created not to be detected.

Larry Bowers, the chief scientist at USADA, said that the "clear" ((or THG)) was not detectable by most drug testing protocols in 2003. The "cream" was designed, according to Bowers, to "basically fool the laboratory."

From Sporting News...

"I'm not sure how you steal something from someone when you move it from their property A to their property B," Cobb said, according to ESPN. "It's just him trying to stir up more trouble. I'm not concerned. He's just trying to rattle us.

Your NFL Strike Update: Nothing from nothing means nothing (Rich vs. Rich-Day 13)

DeMaurice Smith of NFLPA (not a union)
Well...there really isn't too much to report here. On the good side, nobody from either side said anything stupid. Which is a change from previous days.

Both sides have spent the better part of the past couple of weeks. No, actually the past couple of years saying stupid things to each other and just being entirely unproductive.

According to many, the players primary complaint really is more the "Lack of respect" shown to them by the owners. And while on one hand we understand that, on the other, it's completely and utterly childish.

Read a good story on respect from Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com RIGHT HERE

For their part, the players are sticking to their revenue complaints. They maintain the league is inflating the figures that the players receive from extra revenues.

You can read the story the refer to RIGHT HERE

Okay. We don't dispute the math here, but the whole thing misses on fundamental issue that neither side is willing to address. This is an ASTRONOMICAL amount of money. Why or how can you not work this part out?

We cringe at comments such as the one by NFLPA President (not a union, a trade association) Kevin Mawae. Mawae is concerned that young players don't have insurance and have to get COBRA insurance and that they may not have the ability to pay it long term.

Ok Kevin, we get that COBRA is not cheap. But the league minimum salary is somewhere close to $400,000 a year. We are pretty sure if the money is budgeted well, it can be afforded.

Do we think the owners should do more for players in terms of medical? Absolutely. Players and former players are injured and have health problems that don't go away. Why can't you take some of the $Billions we are talking about and put it in a HSA?

As for the Owners/Greedy bastards. They seem to be coming across as just looking for more bucks. They already, routinely hold city's hostage for new stadiums paid for on the backs of taxpayers in those cities. At last check, there are a ton of cities and states going broke these days.

We suspect that is the crux of most of their issues. None of them want to dish out of their own pockets...to build a stadium themselves. Which it appears is what the owners believe can drive revenues.

Anyway, we've rambled on and on about this, we could talk for hours. We still maintain this is all about greed...on both sides of the issue. We suspect nothing is going to happen before the "Class-action" case goes in front of a Minneapolis Federal Judge on April 6th. Legitimately, there isn't a reason this can't be resolved before the season starts. It's more a battle of egos than issues, but we suspect it is going to drag on for awhile. So we better do our homework, because it's going to be tough to come up with material every day.

In the meantime, here is your title music, which really...kind of sums everything up:

Done Deal. Mike Anderson To Arkansas

As expected Mike Anderson was named the new head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.

It's a homecoming for Anderson who spent 17 years as an assistant to Nolan Richardson at Arkansas.

"We are extremely excited to welcome home Mike Anderson to the University of Arkansas as our new head men's basketball coach," Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said.

"Under Mike's leadership, I am confident the Razorbacks will be successful in the future on and off the court. The decision to hire Mike Anderson as head coach is based on my firm belief that he is the right person to lead the Razorback program today and in the years to come."

"I am extremely excited to once again be a part of this special University and Razorback Athletics." Mike Anderson said. "With the continued passionate support of all Razorback fans, I am confident that we will have the opportunity to succeed on and off the court and continue to build on the University of Arkansas' championship tradition."

The Razorback Foundation board has approved a contract that will pay Anderson $2.2 million a year for seven years, with a $500,000 buyout clause.

After years of stability and NCAA Tournament appearances first under Eddie Sutton and then Nolan Richardson, the Arkansas men's basketball program had been anything but stable since Richardson was let go in 2002. Razorback fans are hoping with Anderson returing to Fayetteville the program will stablize and return to it's winning ways.

DEVELOPING: Iowa Rhabdo Report Released

((HT: WHO-TV Des Moines))

A report on the 13 University of Iowa football players that were hospitalized after a workout in January clears the players, trainers and coaches of any wrongdoing, but recommends that the workout that led to the injuries be abandoned.

Of course it does...

A five-member committee appointed by University of Iowa President Sally Mason released its findings to the Board of Regents.

The 13 players were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, which breaks down muscle cells and discolors urine. All the players were treated and spent substantial time in hospital, but they have all been released since.

According to the inquiry, back squats with heavy weights caused the injuries, but committee members say they don't know why the injuries occurred because similar workouts in the past did not cause what happened this past time.

Iowa AD Gary Barta says he will implement the committee's recommendations.

But then Steve Harrigan shot back at Robertson's initial assertions in a HuffPo interview...

Harrigan also called Robertson "a hard worker," but added, "I think he's dull. I fall asleep when he gives a report." He noted that many journalists in Libya, such as the four captured New York Times reporters, the BBC reporters who were subjected to mock executions, and the Al Jazeera cameraman who was killed, had been "heroic" in their reporting—even more, he said, than he had been. But he said Robertson could not claim the same thing.

"Is that heroic what he’s doing?" he said. "He puts on his blue blazer and gets on the government bus, and then pats himself on the back and calls that news? Bullshit."

Marty Schottenheimer Is Back, Taking Head Coaching Gig With UFL's Virginia Destroyers

It's good to see Marty Schottenheimer back in football. This time Schottenheimer will stalk the sidelines for the Virginia Destroyers of the UFL.

"I have returned to Coaching with the Virginia Destroyers and the UFL." Schottenheimer tweeted about a half hour ago. "I look forward to taking on Omaha in the first game of the UFL season."

Destroyers fans better hope Schottenheimer has a better track record in the UFL playoffs than he did coaching the Cleveland Browns, where he couldn't get past John Elway and the Denver Broncos, or the Kansas City Chiefs, where even with Joe Montana at quarterback could win the AFC, or the San Diego Chargers, where he had the best team in the NFL and couldn't win a frekin' playoff game.

DAY 3: Novitzky Takes Stand At Bonds Trial

((HT: KGO-TV San Francisco))

The federal investigator who headed up the probe that led to the Barry Bonds' inquiry and subsequent trial wrapped up his testimony on Day 3 of the trial.

Jeff Novitzky talked about the transcript of a taped conversation Bonds had with discussed which government officials created the transcripts of a recording made between Bonds and Steve Hoskins- a former business partner.

Hoskins was expected to testify about the recording he made secretly of a conversation about steroids he had with Bonds' former personal trainer, Greg Anderson.

The Bonds charge stems from allegedly lying to a grand jury in 2003 when he said
did not knowingly take performance-enhancing drugs. Yesterday, Novitzky told the jury how, in 2002, he regularly searched the trash of Victor Conte's BALCO lab for evidence.

Sometimes, that's the best way to get evidence...

Those of us at the OSG HQ say there is no way in hell Jamie Dixon and Jay Wright would leave Big East schools to coach the Vols. Ditto for Anthony Grant, why make a lateral move.

Turgeon is on everyone's list but has stayed at Texas A&M.

Marshall? If he makes a move its to NC State.

How Does "Anaheim Royals" Sound? Not Good In Sacramento

It beginning to look as if Southern California will get a third NBA team. This one playing in Anaheim.

It's a outcome Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson seems to have resigned himself to.

Rumors have been flying this season that the Sacramento Kings were leaving California's capitol city. Confirmation that it was more than just rumors came from none other than the NBA's grand poohbah David Stern.

Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait confirmed Tuesday that negotiations are ongoing with the Kings to bring the franchise to Anaheim where they would play at the Honda Center.

"This is something this city has been waiting 18 years for," Tait said in an interview with the Orange County Register. "I am very excited."

In his blog Johnson, who you may remember was an all-star guard for the Phoenix Suns, wrote, " First we heard from NBA Commissioner David Stern, who said rumors about the Kings’ talks with Anaheim were more than rumors."

"Next was the decision by the Kings not to share financial market data with the team of professionals selected by the City Council to study the feasibility of our new entertainment and sports complex.

"Then we saw the Kings playing games in “Royals” uniforms – supposedly to celebrate their history when the club was based in Rochester, N.Y., and Cincinnati from 1948 to 1972."

You can read Mayor Johnson's blog right here: http://www.kevinjohnson.com/KevinsBlog/tabid/98/Article/809/watching-kings-prepare-to-leave-is-like-slow-death.aspx

And it looks as if "Royals" would return. Earlier this month the Maloof brothers who own the franchise filed for a trademark with names. Among the names filed for according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office's website were: Anaheim Royals, Anaheim Royals of Southern California, Orange County Royals and Los Angeles Royals. The filing was made on March 3rd. The Maloofs have until April 18th to file with the league for relocation.

The Kings have been a transient franchise. The team began in Rochester, NY as the "Rochester Royals before moving to Cincinnati in 1957. In 1972 they franchise changed their name to "King" after moving to Kansas City. They kept the "Kings" nickname for their fourth move to Sacramento in 1985.

They would have to change back to "Royals" since the Los Angeles Kings play hockey up the road in downtown L.A.

Dez Bryant no longer welcome at Dallas area mall

Bwahahaha! Sorry, we couldn't contain our laughter after reading this story. It seems as though Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has been banned from a Dallas area mall after creating a "Disturbance".

According to a report by WFAA-TV, Bryant received a "Criminal Trespass warning at the NorthPark Center on Saturday night. He received the warning apparently after he and some friends went to the mall wearing pants that according to Mall Security--were half down their hips, exposing their underwear".

As the story goes, security asked the men to pull up their pants and were summarily treated to "Profanity Laced" tirade which necessitated Mr. Bryant being asked to leave--and not come back.

Read the entire story from WFAA-TV RIGHT HERE

And--get this. It apparently was not Bryant's "1st issue" at the mall. According to the warning he was issued, Bryant is subject to arrest if he is found at the mall within the next 90 days.

Interesting. On first read, the response here is Bryant needs to act like a grown-up. If he's offending people at the Mall and is asked to pull up his pants, that, despite the potential cultural issues, is not an unreasonable request. Had he complied, we wouldn't be discussing this.

We realize, the "Low-slung" pants thing is somewhat cultural and not necessarily something we totally understand. But...that being said. You just can't do that in a public place. Period. If you want to dress like that around your neighborhood or in your house, go for it. But you are in a public place--a mall.

At second glance, the bigger issue is that it wasn't his first "Disturbance" at the Mall. And while he may feel picked on, we think that the opposite is true and the Mall has given him multiple chances and overlooked some things.

The bottom line here is Bryant just needs to "Shut Up" and let this go away. But we are guessing he won't. He just proves and verifies what people think about some NFL Football players, they don't act like grown-ups, because people don't make them act that way. Grow-up dude, despite what you think, you aren't 15 anymore.

Here's the TV Story from WFAA:
