OSG Sports Update: Roddy White Ends Holdout

Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White has ended his holdout with the team.
He has agreed to a contract extension with the club.

FALCONS WIDE RECEIVER RODDY WHITE

AGREES TO TERMS ON CONTRACT EXTENSION

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA – Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White agreed to terms on a contract extension today. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

White set a franchise record with 1,382 receiving yards last season (fourth in the NFL) en route to his first Pro Bowl nomination. He became the first Falcons receiver to post back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns since 1998 and '99 and the first receiver in club history to tally back-to-back 1,200-yard seasons. In 64 career games, White has caught 230 passes for 3,536 yards (15.4 avg.) and 16 touchdowns. In 2008, he led the League in third down receiving yardage (516) and ranked tied for second in the NFL in third down receptions (29). The Falcons were 5-1 last season when White finished a game with at least one touchdown reception.

6 Years and $50 mil, with $18 million guaranteed which would make White the 2nd highest paid Receiver in the NFL. Not bad for a guy who 3 years ago, was barely hanging on to his job.

Ouch! Tough Training Camp for the Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons, last seasons NFL darlings in a near worst to first turnaround are already showing the signs of this year not being quite as smooth. For those who don't know, they parlayed a chaotic 2007 into a Playoff berth in 2008. The thing that most folks in Atlanta and for that matter the NFL are waiting to see. Whether they can have back to back winning seasons. Something believe it or not, they have never done.

Well, we are about 1 week in to Training Camp and already...we've got injuries and holdouts. This morning, the news on #3 receiver Harry Douglas, (seen here courtesy Celebritycity.com) was not good. The story from ajc.com here . And as an added bonus...this years 2nd round pick William Moore goes down in practice today...though he isn't expected to miss the year. More on that again from ajc.com here .

All of this makes the case of holdout Wide Receiver Roddy White interesting. White who has been among the best WR's in the league the past 2 seasons wants a new deal, he still has a year to go on his rookie deal which pays him about 2.25 million, White and his agent are looking for more, significantly more.

Gone, Gone, Gonzalez...

Well, the rumors were true. The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to part ways with their all-pro, the one pillar that was left in the franchise, one Tony Gonzalez.

The Chiefs traded Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons for a 2nd round draft pick...in 2010. Somewhat of an odd price, but for the Falcons...a steal.

The move was not a total surprise as stories have leaked out over the past several days saying that Gonzalez would end up either in Atlanta or Philly. The Falcons, rumored to be picking a Tight End in this years draft, now obviously don't have to worry about it any more. They can concentrate on what they need, which is defense.

From the Chiefs perspective, it was understandable that they made this deal...to an extent. They are in the midst of a huge rebuilding process and Gonzalez would probably not be around to see the end result. So Chiefs GM Scott Pioli did him a favor and sent him to a contender, yes another young team, but one that made the playoffs in 2008 and with a huge upside.

Falcons fans have to be salivating at the thought of Matt Ryan running an offense with not only Michael Turner and Roddy White, but Gonzalez. While they may lack some defense, they will certainly be good enough offensively to compete with just about anyone, we just hope that they have lots of big numbers to put on the scoreboard at the Georgia Dome.

7PM UPDATE:Chris Landry was a guest on the "Myers and Hartman Show" this afternoon, eastern time, on Fox Sports Radio. Landry said that the Chiefs and the Falcons may not be done dealing. 2008 first-round pick of the Chiefs, Glenn Dorsey, may be moved to the Falcons for draft picks. Landry believes that Chiefs GM Scott Pioli may be willing to take the cap hit and move his defensive lineman that will not fit in the schemes on the books right now in Kansas City.

Landry believes Dorsey would be a better fit in the Falcons defensive playbook.
