Washington State Gets By Montana State.... Barely

Those of us at the OSG HQ called for Montana State to defeat Washington State and the Bobcats damn near pulled it off which would have made Jon, Brother Phil and yours truly look like geniuses.

Wazzou was down 22-7 heading into the fourth quarter but Cougar pride took over scoring 17 answered points to eek out a win 23-22.

Here's the highlights from KREM-TV, Spokane, Washington.

And some post game sound from Cougar safety Chima Nwachukwu.

Plus head coach Paul Wulff's post game comments too. (Thanks WSU Cougar Athletics/Youtube.com)

TWTW: What In The Hell Is Going On In Washington...??? Or: "Clear Is Folk...?"

((HT: KOMO-TV))

Erik Folk kicked a 22-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining and the Huskies' fired-up defense stymied fill-in quarterback Aaron Corp and No. 3 USC in a 16-13 victory Saturday.

It was the first time the Trojans have lost to the UW Huskies since 2001 - and the first time UW has beat the Trojans at Husky Stadium since 1996.

It was Washington quarterback Jake Locker's time to shine and the Huskies' turn pull out a win that will stand among the most memorable in the once-proud program's history. Locker drove the Huskies 63 yards on 10 plays to set up the winning kick.

USC (2-1, 0-1 Pac-10) was nearly a three-touchdown favorite. Washington (2-1, 1-0) came in riding a 10-game losing streak in Pac-10 games and had broken a 15-game overall skid last week against Idaho.

But again the Trojans were toppled by a team that seemed to be no match for all their blue chip recruits and future NFL draft picks. USC has now lost to an unranked team each of the last four seasons.

Here's Sark's post-game thanks to our friends at KOMO

And Wazzu beat SMU...???
Whasupwidat???!!!

Nico Grasu kicked a 39-yard field goal in overtime as Washington State came back from a 17-point deficit to beat Southern Methodist 30-27 on Saturday for its first win of the season. The Mustangs (2-1) had the first drive of overtime. But Bo Levi Mitchell threw deep into the end zone on the first play and was picked off by Chima Nwachukwu. It was Washington State's fourth interception of the game.

The Cougars (1-2) took over on the 25 and gained just three yards on three plays before Grasu's game winner. Earlier in the game he missed a 39-yard field goal.

It was the first time Washington State had led all season.

What is this world coming to...???
By the way, if you listened to the OSG C/PC College Football Preview, we kinda called that...

The Dirty Dozen and Bottom of the Barrel...Week 2

Week 2 has ended and it is on to week number 3. We didn't get to see a lot of upsets in week 2, but we did see reality start to set back in. Now the season really starts, Florida plays and actual Division 1 team and everyone else gets practice games like they did.

In honor of what we are pretty sure Florida is going to do to Tennessee, check out this clip from the You Tube:

We can only imagine Urban Meyer having that order carried out on Lane Kiffin this week. Now...on with the countdown.

The Dirty Dozen:

1. Florida (2-0). This isn't really fair since they haven't actually played a football team in the Top 90 yet. It's been like watching Varsity vs. JV. That is supposed to change this week and it would if they weren't looking to embarrass the fighting Kiffin's (This week: Florida 112, Tennessee 7)

2. Texas (2-0). Colt McCoy is leading the charge for the 12...mostly because there is nobody else left...that is healthy. They took care of business last week and only ESPN thinks this weeks game should be a big deal...we know how that works. (This Week: Texas 51, Texas Tech 23)

3. Alabama (2-0). They actually struggled with the Fighting Christobal's for a half before reality set in. They are currently on the Florida practice game track, so they will win going away...again. (This Week: Alabama 38, North Texas 6)

4. Penn State (2-0). The Joe Pa's had little trouble with Syracuse as expected. They drift out of conference for a week, but it's not a biggie...it's not North Texas...or Charleston Southern either (you listening Florida?). (This week: Penn State 37, Temple of Doom 10)

5. BYU (2-0). Already they are the pollsters darlings...for now. I like this team, but they aren't better than the teams ahead of them in this poll. This coming up week should be fun. Strangely, the pollsters will make more out of this than those of us who know football, their opponent ain't so good. (This week: BYU 31, Florida St. 27)

6. Boise State (2-0). There toughest game is done, though this week won't be a pushover and it's not on that godawful turf that looks bizarre with Boise's jerseys. (This Week: Boise St. 20, Fresno St. 17)

7. Ole Miss (1-0). The off-week couldn't have come at a better time for team Swine Flu. Thankfully for them they don't have to be 100% to win the game ahead (Ole Miss 28, SE La. 3)

8. LSU (2-0). Nice win in bad weather vs. a tough Vanderbilt team. I still like this squad and they are right now flying nice and low. The fun part of the game this week is seeing my wife's conflicted rooting interest. (LSU 37, La.-Lafayette 13)

9. Ohio State (1-1). Told you so! I still hate putting them here...but I will stick with them as a good team for another week. They did play USC very close...so they've got that going for them. (This Week: Ohio St. 27, Toledo 26)

10. California (2-0). They will fade...they always do. But they are one of the best teams in the country every year for 2-6 weeks. Jahvid Best really is a good ballplayer, that helps, but they are still Cal...so the fade will follow. (This Week: California 37, Minnesota 31)

11. Georgia Tech (2-0). Repeat after me; "THIS IS A GOOD TEAM". Trust me when I say that nobody wants to play them. They are very...very good as surprising as it is to some they are a really tough match up. (This Week: Ga. Tech 27, Miami 19)

12. Oklahoma (1-1). Some redemption last week, though it shouldn't really count because it was the Idaho State Potatoes. They have proven that there may be life with out Sam Bradford...for now. (This Week: Oklahoma 41, Tulsa 31)

The Bottom of the Barrel:

5. Ball State (0-2). I said "Ball State". They lost to New Hampshire last week. Not good if you are supposed to be a Division 1 team. (This week: Army 26, Ball St. 12)

4. Rice a Roni (0-2). Not good, even if you are the "San Francisco Treat" or a really bad team that plays football in Texas. (This week: Okie State 120, Rice 6 Noodles)

3. Colorado (0-2). Wouldn't want to be Dan Hawkins right now, his team ain't off to a good start. Losses to Col. State and Toledo to start the year. I believe if you look on Career Builder you might find an application for this job. (This Week: Wyoming 20, Colorado 19)

2. Virginia (0-2) I wonder if Dan Hawkins and Al Groh are friends. Maybe they can look for a job together? This is a bad team in a "REALLY" bad conference (hear me Wilkie!). (This week: Southern Mississippi 24, Virginia 17= Al Groh unemployed)

1. Washington State (0-2). This may become permanent before long. I guess crappy football is acceptable up in the Great Northwest because they've sucked for 2+ years now. No sign of that changing (This Week: (SMU 4, Wash St. 0-I'm so conflicted...2 of my favorite crappy teams...)

Last Week: 11-3...straight up...not a bad way to start!

Tony Bennett To UVA

((HT: KHQ-TV))

Washington State University men's basketball coach Tony Bennett surprised his players, his assistant coaches and the school administration Monday by accepting an offer to become the head coach at the University of Virginia.

Bennett ((pictured, thanks The Statesman-Review)) told returning players and coaches about his plans at a 2 p.m. meeting in Beasley Coliseum.

"I was so shocked," said freshman guard Klay Thompson of Bennett's announcement.

A source close to the situation told The Spokesman-Review the offer came up over the weekend and though the decision was a tough one, Bennett decided this was the right move for his family and future.

Read the rest at Spokesman-Review.

Meanwhile, Washington State University Director of Athletics Jim Sterk confirmed that men's basketball coach Tony Bennett has accepted the head coaching position at the University of Virginia.

"Dick and Tony Bennett have elevated the men's basketball program at Washington State to an unprecedented level of success," Sterk said. "We will begin a national search for a coach immediately with the goal of finding someone with the integrity, experience, and values that Dick and Tony brought to the program."

Sterk said that Virginia asked for permission to speak with Bennett last Friday. Monday afternoon Bennett informed Sterk and WSU President Elson S. Floyd of his decision to accept the position at Virginia.

Following those conversations, Bennett informed his players of his decision.

Crying Wulff

Paul Wulff had a miserable debut season at Washington State. The Cougars went 2-11 and finished next to last in the Pac-10 thanks to beating Washington in the Apple Cup.

Now Wulff's legacy from his previous job, Eastern Washington, is stained. The NCAA found that the EWU football program under Wulff's watch committed major violations from 2003-04 to 2006-07.

Among the violations announced Wednesday were allowing ineligible athletes to practice, having 13 to 14 assistant coaches when the NCAA capps it at 11 and failure to properly monitor the team. In other words, Wulff got the "failure to monitor" citation and Eastern Washington got the dreaded "lack of institutional control" from the NCAA

Eastern Washington was put on three years' probation, banned from Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2009 and loses two scholarships plus had limits placed on recruiting and coaching.

Here's the NCAA's statement: "The (NCAA committee on infractions) found that the violations in this case were the result of the former head coach's inattention to certain aspects of his program. The committee stated it was most concerned that the former head coach did not report various violations to the compliance office once he learned of them."

This follows Wulff to Pullman where he cannot have any contact with the Washington State football team during the first three days of practice in 2009.

During those seasons of breaking the rules, Eastern Washington won 2 Big Sky Conference Co-Championships and 3 FCS playoff appearances.
The OSG posse draws this conclusion, during his time in Cheney, Washington Paul turned into a Big Bad Wulff.
