Bobby Knight and Kentucky basketball: The war continues

Bob Knight/Courtesy: collegesportsfeed.com
This is nothing short of odd. We may be a day or two late in reporting the 1st part of this story. You know, the part where College basketball coaching legend and ESPN analyst Bob Knight calls out John Calipari and the University of Kentucky.

Knight, apparently on Saturday took umbrage with Calipari and the 2009 Kentucky basketball team. Answering a question during a speech at Wabash University, he accused UK of starting 5 players that didn't go to class that semester. Blaming that as a reason for a "One-and-done philosophy" now permeating college hoops.

Well, Kentucky responded today. Wildcat AD Mitch Barnhart saying Knight's assertion was "Blantantly erroneous" and "The University of Kentucky, our student-athletes and their families take great offense" to what was said.

Read the full story from the Lousiville Courier-Journal RIGHT HERE

This is stupid. Knight knows better. Or he should. Sure, we've taken shots at Calipari and Kentucky, but we would make that assertion, not without proof. And he didn't have any proof. There's plenty of proof that several of the UK players were actually pretty good students. Sure, there were some issues (ie: Eric Bledsoe), but none were proven.

Knight isn't wrong about one thing. The "One-and-done" issue in College basketball should be addressed. It's a problem. College football requires at least 2-years of players and there's no legitimate reason basketball can't do the same. Yeah, we know we've harped on the NCAA and their lack of commitment to anything academic or for the athlete.

But keeping kids in school another year doesn't hurt anyone. The money is going to be there. If they are good enough to leave after one season. They'll be good enough to leave after two. And maybe, just maybe they might catch on to the idea of getting their degree. It's just a thought....

Here's the video/speech that started the war. You'll have to skim through the really annoying titles/graphics to get to it. Sorry. (Courtesy: Joedctalk)

Who Wants The UNLV Gig?

[HT: Las Vegas Review-Journal, http://www.lvrj.com/sports/hunt-to-replace-kruger-heats-up-119163399.html]

That's a good question. UNLV hasn't been it's glitziest self since Jerry Tarkanian was forced to leave the strip.

Rollie Massimino, Bill Bayno, Charlie Spoonhour and Lon Kruger couldn't make the Runnin' Rebels the best show in town like Tark did however, a trio of former players for Tark would like to give it a shot.

Reggie Theus wants the job. Theus had a successful yet brief tenure at New Mexico State leading the Aggies to an NCAA tournament appearance.

Dave Rice, who was on UNLV's Final Four teams in 1990, which won the national championship, and 1991 appears to be the leading candidate. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood has already met with Rice, who's an associate head coach at BYU.

The third former Runnin' Rebel to throw his hat in the ring is 1990 National player of the year Larry Johnson. That interview is coming soon I'm sure.

It appears that Bob Knight has expressed interest in the UNLV position. The Las Vegas Review-Journal is citing a source saying Knight is interested. Part of me would like to see Knight coaching in Las Vegas. You would have a most wins in NCAA history death match between Knight, who has 902 career wins and Mike Krzyzewski, who has 900 wins.

Kind of similar to Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden.

Knight to U of Indiana Hall of Fame

Maybe Indiana and Bobby Knight have kissed and made up. It seems as though Mr. Knight is going to be inducted into the University of Indiana's Hall of Fame. Knight, who won a couple of National Championships at IU, didn't exactly leave the school on the best of terms. Over the past several years, he has taken more than a few shots at the school and the administration and to the school's credit, they have stayed pretty quiet. The real fun will be to see if he actually shows up to receive the honor.

The story from the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette here .

The ceremony will take place November 6th and Knight is expected to be honored along with seven others. The move is seen as being somewhat of an olive branch to the "Always Volatile One" and it should be interesting to see how it plays out. Knight still remains immensely popular in the Hoosier state and no doubt should he decide to show, it will be one hell of a day or weekend to remember.

And to wrap this up, we've posted it before and we'll post it again, we of course are talking about the legendary Chair Throwing incident....Courtesy: You Tube

Watch Out for the Chair!

Sometimes, you have to watch your temper. Such is the case with Anaheim Ducks General Manager Bob Murray, who in frustration Thursday night, picked up a stool in the Press Box at Joe Louis arena and swung it violently, striking a woman sitting nearby. If this were the say, WWE, it might not be an issue, but it wasn't. Thankfully other than a couple of bruises, she was not seriously hurt.

Check out the details from WJBK-TV here . Unfortunately, there is no video of this incident.

Luckily for Murray, the woman declined to press charges although, police did question her and Murray. As much as we can understand Murray's frustration with what happened during the game, unless you are Bobby Knight, there is no chair throwing in Sports.

Bob Knight In His Boxers Playing Guitar Hero

On many levels this Guitar Hero commercial is a bit disturbing. I never thought i would see Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, Mike Krzyzewski & Bob Knight in the boxers in public but hey, anything for a few thousand dollars.

The General went down to Georgia

Knight Moves...

Okay, can someone please explain something to us? Why would Bobby Knight, legendary but crazy College Basketball Coach and now analyst for the 4-Letter Word (ESPN) want to be the Head Basketball Coach at the University of Georgia?
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution's legendary Columnist Furman Bisher, Knight has let it be known that he'd like the gig. Check out Furman's story here

Now, knowing Furman, who has been at this much longer than I've been alive, there is definitely a nugget of truth to this. He wouldn't have reported it if there wasn't. Again the question is why?

Yes, Georgia is desperate to find a way to create some buzz with its Basketball team. They are, for lack of a better phrase, "The Red-Headed Stepchild" of the UGA Athletic Program. Not counting last March's miracle tournament run, they've had no measurable success since the '80's.
It's not to say that they can't. The school just built a $30 million dollar practice facility for its Basketball and Gymanstics teams and it is very, very impressive. There is plenty of Basketball talent inside the state to draw from and the fans are looking for a reason to support them. It will be interesting to hear if UGA President Michael Adams or Atheltic Director Damon Evans contact Knight. Knight apparently wants to be called. Why not? It can't hurt. I'm not saying he'd be the perfect choice, but it does open one's imagination as to the possibilities.
