Charlie Weis goes to Florida...Not as odd as you'd think

Charlie Weis
It's official now. Charlie Weis, now former offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs and former Notre Dame head coach is now the offensive coordinator for Will Muschamp at the University of Florida.

The story, which started leaking out late last week, is in some ways very odd. Not so much that Weis will go to UF, but rather that he'd leave the Chiefs. It was disclosed that he'd wait until the Chiefs are beaten in the playoffs before he leaves for Gainesville.

Read more from the Palm Beach Post RIGHT HERE

And the official version from Gatorzone.com (UF Athletics) RIGHT HERE

While there are a few questions here, we can't fault Weis who has a son down in Gainesville. It's somewhat of a step-down for him, but a chance to be closer to family is understood.

The bigger question is can anyone be work with Chiefs coach Todd Haley. Haley has now gone through 2 offensive coordinators in two seasons having fired Chan Gailey two weeks before the start of the 2009 season. Haley is a smart offensive guy, we just are beginning to wonder how "Offensive" he is appearing to be.

Already there is speculation that former Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels will take over Weis' role. While not discounting the dust-up Haley and McDaniels had after a Kansas City win earlier in the season, the two know each other as they worked together in New England and are disciples of the Bill Belichick coaching tree.

Check out video of Weis getting his knee blown out while the coach at Notre Dame:

PM UPDATE: Florida also hired Seattle Seahawks defensive line coach Dan Quinn as DC and D-line coach. Quinn spent the past 10 years in the NFL and has seven years of college experience.

Frank Verducci was added as O-Line coach and running game coordinator ((The HQ thinks that the two are fairly linked in the first place, right...?)). Verducci coached at Notre Dame in 2009 after eight seasons with four NFL teams.

George Wynn will be director of football operations in Boomtown. He spent the past six seasons as assistant AD for football operations at Texas.

Sunday Carousel: Weis And Garrett Make An Odd Couple

Only because they're in the same story...

Charlie Weis looks like he's going to take the OC job in Boomtown after all.
Nothing like being an overbearing, Type-A personality that will be paired with another Type-A personality for a coaching staff.

Will Muschamp will be the enthusiastic one in Gainesville, and the question now becomes: Who gets to recruit...??? And how do they recruit as a unit...???

Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun has the details
about Weis and Aubrey Hill joining the staff.

Now, to the NFL... and it looks like Jason Garrett, winner of 4 of the 7 games he's coached as the interim leader in Dallas, may get that "interim" label pulled after all.

But David Moore of the Dallas Morning News has things still in flux and indecision.

But if you check in to Michael David Smith at PFT, it's a done deal since the Cowboys brought in Ray Sherman to satisfy the Rooney Rule.

OTHER STUFF: Looks like Tom Cable is in question for a return to Oakland, Gary Kubiak is returning to Houston and the Texans, and Marvin Lewis can stay in Cincinnati if his staff changes- which Lewis may balk at...

More when we know more...

Weis Lands In Kansas City...

((HT: ESPN))

Anyone with any kind of football acumen knew that former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis would not be on the unemployment line for long...

The HQ had figured that he would end back up in New England with the Patriots so he could be reunited with The Hoodie...

Same church, different pew...

He's heading to Kansas City- which, really is New England West these days with Scott Pioli in charge upstairs and Matt Cassel at quarterback. Todd Haley has decided that calling the plays and being head coach of the Chiefs was too much and is turning over the keys to Weis for the 2010 season.

Haley and Weis were assistants together in the Jets organization in their early days.

A lot of dots connected here... and Romeo Crennel may be another one added to the staff very soon.

Chris Mortensen checks in with Dari Nowkha over the telephone to discuss...

Sorry Charlie, You're Not Needed Here

Charlie Weis is gone at Notre Dame.

The New York Daily News is citing a source inside the Notre Dame program that athletic director Jack Swarbrick decided to make the move now.

WNDU-TV in South Bend has, obviously, in-depth coverage...
Jeff Jeffers sits in the newsroom for his sound from AD Swarbrick...

Weis has not met with the team since he was told he will not be returning as head coach. The team leaders did meet with Swarbrick this morning for discussions about the possibility of attending a bowl game, however there was no official vote at the meeting.

Irish assistant head coach/offense, wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello will take over until a successor is chosen.

Jimmy Clausen Avoids the Rush but not the Punch

Really, the past few weeks have...shall we say...been "Less" than pleasant for Notre Dame football. Just a mere 3-4 weeks ago, there was talk of them making the BCS, heck...Lou Holtz said so, so it must be true.

Well, to top off losing 3 out of the last 4 comes this one. Quarterback Jimmy Clausen got into a brief skirmish Saturday night after the Irish lost to UConn and he came out of it with a black eye. Granted, according to all reports, the incident was not his fault, rather the fault of a drunk and stupid alleged fan...but it was an incident never the less.

More from the WSBT-TV- RIGHT HERE.
The South Bend Tribune's version is RIGHT HERE

((Jimmy Clausen wearing Eye Black//Courtesy: Marcus Marter/South Bend Tribune))

Embattled and probably soon unemployed Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis pretty much would not comment...at all about the incident other than saying "He'll play" in this weeks game against Stanford.

This hasn't been a "Banner" season for the Irish, but then again, neither have the past 10 or so. The one "Breakout" performance thus far has been the play of Clausen who at one point was very much in the Heisman conversation. Those discussions have faded much like Notre Dame has, but Clausen has most definitely enhanced his stock with the NFL. The incident Saturday was unfortunate and definitely not his fault, but we really couldn't not mention it at all now, could we?

Here is some video of Mr. Clausen playing QB. Laugh if you will at the "Ambitious" commentary from the poster: Thanks You Tube

TWTW: UConn Takes Out Weis Guys In South Bend

((HT: WTNH-TV))

After losing three games by a total of four points after the slaying of teammate Jasper Howard, UConn finally got a win Saturday- in South Bend, against Notre Dame, in double overtime- 33-30...

Andre Dixon scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the second overtime, and we think that all this does is send Charlie Weis packing with an $18-million golden dome parachute...

Weis said 6-5 wasn't acceptable when he took the job, and those of us at OSG HQ think 6-5 is unacceptable now...

Here's your coverage of the game, thanks to our friends at WTNH-TV...

TWTW: Navy Sinks Notre Dame's BCS Hopes 23-21

((HT: WNDU-TV/South Bend))

Notre Dame's hopes for a BCS bid ended with its 2nd loss to Navy in three season as the Irish fell 23-21 at Notre Dame Stadium to the Midshipmen to drop to 6-3 on the season.

Notre Dame left 27 points off the scoreboard while inside the red zone in the defeat.

Navy becomes bowl eligible with the victory. The last time Navy beat Notre Dame twice in three season---was the last two times the Midshipmen beat the Irish--- 1961 and 1963.

In between those two periods, Notre Dame won 43 straight in the series.
Next up for the Irish is 13th ranked Pittsburgh, which improved to 8-1 on the season.

TWTW: USC Hangs On In South Bend, Clausen Grades Incomplete 34-27

((HT: KCBS-TV/Los Angeles))

Jimmy Clausen threw three incomplete passes into the end zone in the closing seconds as No. 6 Southern California held on for a 34-27 victory and its eighth straight win against No. 25 Notre Dame.

The Irish rallied back from a 34-14 deficit, but couldn't score into the same end zone where the Trojans famously scored four years ago on the Bush Push.

On Clausen's first pass into the end zone, Kyle Rudolph made juggling catch but was out of bounds. The second was knocked down by Josh Pinkard and the Trojans started celebrating thinking the game was over.

But the officials ruled there was 1 second left.

Clausen fired to Duval Kamara, who slipped and couldn't get a hand on it.

TWTW: Clausen Outlasts Locker, Irish Win In OT

((HT: WNDU-TV/South Bend))

The cardiac kids did it again.

Robert Hughes scored a touchdown in overtime, and Harrison Smith and Kyle McCarthy laid out Washington's D'Andre Goodwin on 4th and 20 as Notre Dame defeated the Huskies 37-30 at the Stadium in yet another thriller for the Irish.

It was the 4th straight wild down to-the-wire finish for Notre Dame, and their third straight victory.

Notre Dame is now 4-1 and is on the bye next week before hosting USC on October 17th.

TWTW: Spare The Rod...? Michigan Spoils ND Visit To Ann Arbor

((HT: WNDU-TV))

Notre Dame erased an 11-point 4th quarter deficit only to see Michigan freshman quarterback Tate Forcier throw a game-winning touchdown pass to Greg Matthews with 11seconds left in the game as the Wolverines beat the Irish 38-34 in a thriller at the Big House in Ann Arbor on Saturday.

The game ended with some confusion as the Irish appeared to let the kickoff roll out of the end zone untouched, meaning they should have the full 11 seconds left. But only nine seconds were on the clock when the Irish snapped the ball and time ran out after a completion to Golden Tate.

Charlie Weis was not happy, trying to gain an explanation from officials as to why the clock was set at nine seconds instead of 11. Replays showed the ball was touched by Irish returner Theo Riddick during the kick, thus the reason two seconds ran off.

Forcier was 23 of 33 for 240 yards, two touchdown passes and a touchdown run. "I don't get nervous," Forcier said after the game about keeping his composure in the final minute of the game. "I've been preparing for this my whole life. It's unbelievable. I'm speechless."

Notre Dame drops to 1-1 on the season.
They will host Michigan State next Saturday at the Stadium.

Is Charlie Weis an Intern?

We all know how seriously the folks at Notre Dame take their football. Under current Head Coach Charlie Weis, they haven't exactly been flush with success as of late. This season, some folks are "Increasing their Expectations" for the Irish (though we don't know why). That brings us to this story coming out of South Bend, Indiana.

Apparently a billboard located directly on top of the "Linebacker Inn" near the Notre Dame Campus posted this interesting "Good Luck" message to Weis for this season. It probably wouldn't be that funny...until you read the last word. Weis didn't exactly enjoy the quote.

Weis Reacts To McMakin Slur

((HT: WNDU-TV/South Bend))

Not wanting the story to linger until next week's media day, Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis issued a statement on Friday reacting to the comments made by Hawaii coach Greg McMackin ((pictured, thanks South Bend Tribune file)) this week.

Notre Dame, of course, romped Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve. Two days before the game, the two programs participated in a Bowl Banquet together.

At the dinner, a friendly dance off ensued.

This week at the WAC conference media day, McMackin referred to Notre Dame's routine as a "Little faggot dance."

Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis in regards to Hawaii coach Greg McMackin¹s comments yesterday:

"Coach McMackin demonstrated poor judgment when, while making comments critical of our football program, he used a derogatory word," Weis said in the statement. "Speaking only for our football program, we were offended by the remarks."

"[Friday] afternoon I received a phone call from Coach McMackin and he apologized to me and asked I pass that along to my players and coaches. We accept his apology and we will move on."

"As a parent of a daughter with global developmental delays, I am especially sensitive to offensive characterizations like the one at issue here. But in no way do I believe Coach McMackin's comments were intended to be offensive. In our phone conversation today, I expressed those sentiments."

"It is now time to put this incident behind us and return focus to the 2009 season."

The Irish hold their annual Media Day next Friday with the first day of practice next Saturday.

If you want to see the towel waving the Irish players did in the banquet room, you can view it here... thanks, again to WNDU-TV...

Here's the reaction from the Notre Dame football program...

Karma or Luck of The Irish...?

You get to choose...

Notre Dame Head Football Coach Charlie Weis accepts an apology from four-letter-word anchor Trey Wingo, but not one from fellow anchor Dana Jacobson before the game with the University of Michigan...

And, in true karmic fashion, a Michigan player bestows the same injury on Weis that his former quarterback, Tom Brady ((a Michigan grad)) is now having to deal with- a torn MCL and ACL from this rolling from behind...

Weis finished the game with a wrapped leg and on crutches...
((thanks, the youtube and ESPN))

Brian Hamilton has the following update from his Chicago Tribune blog...

Charlie Weis may or may not have surgery to repair the torn left ACL he suffered in a win over Michigan on Saturday -- but if the Notre Dame coach does go under the knife, it won't be any time soon.

"I might just go without having the surgery in the foreseeable future, if at all, to the ACL,"
Weis said Sunday. "If we need to address it down the road, we'll address it down the road. I certainly would not do it anytime we had a game. If I did it at all, it would be on a bye week or after the season."
