So, as part of our TWTW coverage on the OSG High side, we're giving you a glimpse into the world of what we get to see every week during the summer and fall- small towns that wrap themselves around their football teams...
You see the work we do with Ringgold ((GA)) High and now, we'll keep you posted on Phil Campbell ((AL)) high as well... 38 people in a town of 1,200 or so were lost on that day four months ago...
And they haven't quit since...

Help Joplin Rebuild... A Before And After...

Admittedly, the HQ has been wrapped up in a few projects this summer- two of them involve the nastiest natural disasters that the HQ's HQ has seen in a long time...
We found this report on the WJLA-TV website when we were trying to stay updated on the Roger Clemens perjury trial...

159 people died when a multivortex EF-5 tornado visited Joplin, Missouri on May 22nd. Think Joplin is far along the road to recovery by now? This video might make you reconsider.
The upper slice of the screen shows footage recorded on a drive-through of Joplin’s 20th Street in August. It’s a verdant, pleasant Southern scene. Below that is a horrorscape of imploded houses and denuded trunks recorded just last week, on July 8. The destruction just goes on, and on, and on.

OSG High: Ringgold High Graduates Off-Campus

The Ringgold High Tigers had their graduation last night- off campus...
But they weren't alone at McKenzie Arena on the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga campus. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe was there as well on an emotional night on a lot of different fronts...
Our friends at Newschannel 9 are keeping us up to date on the re-construction of the entire Ringgold High and Ringgold Middle School campuses...
That story is hyah and they're still looking at September for getting back to the new normal...

Last Night's Tornadoes Were Nothing to Play With...

The HQ will admit that we spent a lot of yesterday afternoon writing and watching all of the developments in Oklahoma City- considering how much we're fixated with Ringgold, Georgia, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Joplin, Missouri these days...
After OKC, it was the Metroplex last night... we even went as far as, inadvertently, waking up one of the posse in Dallas not knowing he was working morning shift...
The game at the Ballpark at Arlington was pushed back three-and-a-half hours because of the weather action in the area...
Evidence here...

OSG High: 4 Joplin Schools Complete Losses

It seems we're doing a lot of this for the spring and summer...
You've seen all the damage done by the tornado that took out at least 75-percent of the town of Joplin. Over 100 are known dead, some are still missing, and now another town has to pick up and start over...
A press conference took place today to explain the scope of the damage from an academic stand-point...
Superintendent CJ Huff gets to share the bad news...
Obviously, there are no classes planned for the rest of the intended school year...
But the goal to rebuild is a great task and one Joplin plans to take on full bore.

Rebuilding Ringgold...

It’s random, but at the same time, systematic…
It’s cruel and uncaring- like the idea that anything Mother Nature would put in our way would be handled with care…
The same person who makes sure that sunrise and sunset are two of the most beautiful parts of the day can also make sure that you know what is beautiful can also be hard to handle and, regrettably, deadly.
We always have this vision of Mother Nature, from the days of those Chiffon margarine commercials from the past…
And, I know, I just dated myself…

So, what happens when her fury is thrust upon you and you have no choice…???
Ask the folks of Ringgold…
A lot of us have seen what the damage has been in Alabama, but right here close to home, it’s just as bad…
You ask anyone and the sky went from purple to black and everyone tried to hide. But even if you hide and make it from one side to the other, you’re still stuck with what’s left. Mark Harmon, Shane Keating, and myself went to Ringgold to see first-hand how the town is coping with rebuilding- not just the physical, but the mental and emotional aspects of that word… “rebuilding…”
Two weeks after the fact, it still looked an unhappy child was ready to start over with his or her set of Lincoln Logs and smashed the work to pieces…
Driving up Interstate 75, the town of Ringgold (population 3,000) has access from three exits- 345, 348, and 350…
The first one and the last one were fine… the middle was where a tornado, probably 500 yards wide at some points came screaming down the Alabama Highway from west to east.
And it didn’t play favorites…
It didn’t matter if you owned a gas station, a convenience store, a restaurant, a hotel, or a car dealership. It didn’t matter if you owned, rented, leased, or borrowed. Your personal possessions were in the crosshairs or something very angry with a singular purpose… But at the intersection of Alabama Highway and Main Street, it stopped in one place, reinvented itself, made a right turn and picked up speed and momentum and decided that the subdivision that cradled Ringgold High School and Ringgold Middle School would be the new path. And the part of the tornado that stopped at Main Street would meet the other half at the school grounds… hopping over Main Street itself…
Graciously, head football coach and Athletics Director Robert Akins and Assistant Principal Kyra Rhyne allowed us to tour the grounds with them and see what this tornado did to people’s livelihoods, and their lives, as the Tiger family lost two students on that night as they were with their families: a wrestler and a National Honor Society inductee.
You could tell the rotation of the tornado and what it did along the way…

There is a nine-minute tour that the four of us took... that video is here...
It's raw tape, so you may see some things that aren't quite edited-for-television...
But, after the tour, we were left to our own devices… having seen the track the unwanted party guest took to enter the city and followed it up the mountain side where it picked up momentum all over again…
The four block subdivision that caught everything full force was just as randomly jumbled as everything else we had seen… and this was two weeks after the fact...
Homes were either rendered unlivable, or outright destroyed, but some were untouched showing only trees that were turned into obstacles in driveways. The Mt. Peria Baptist Church seemed to symbolize the whole night as one of their travel vans was right-side up and it’s companion was upside-down. Its front canopy and roof had collapsed while some of the church possessions ended up 20 feet up in a nearby tree. But the most sobering moment of the whole trip was on that same street when a woman who was helping another clean up the remains of a life fully-invested asked me:
“Do you know what street this is…?”
Had there been a street sign up, I probably could have recalled it… but those didn’t exist anymore, either…
“Sorry, I wish I knew,” was all I could come up with…
To say it impacted the three of us is a severe understatement…
I have had to worry about people I love in these situations before as we were miles apart and you couldn’t do anything but be supportive over a phone line from hours away. But now having seen what Mother Nature can do close up, you always remember how she impacted others. The high school, they say, may be ready for classes by the end of July. The middle schoolers will move next door, probably, until their new school is built. And that may be for the best so the younger ones can share their thoughts and feelings with the older kids…

And while the schools can be rebuilt by insurance, there are a lot of things that can’t be recovered that way… “everything” athletic is the easiest way to say it…
The baseball team was able to salvage some uniforms for their playoff run that took them to a third game in the second round with perennial powerhouse Columbus High, but everything else is still being figured out. The football team is practicing over at Heritage High with the spring game scheduled for this Saturday morning against the Generals and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The proceeds are all going to Ringgold and their rebuilding…
If you can’t make it, a fund has been set up to help Ringgold High and Ringgold Middle…

Toomer's For Tuscaloosa Goes National
Right Reverend Rece is an alum of the University of Alabama...

OSG High: Ringgold's Road Back...

Mother Nature is a fickle woman...
She is random, forgetful, forceful, uncaring, and altogether unforgiving...
Her effects are forever and her lessons are hard...
Evidence Lesson Plan 1:
You can't help but be moved by all these communities that have been wiped off the map, and when it comes to help, it's more of a "where do you start?" mentality instead of the normal "let's start here and move forward."
Mississippi has theirs, Alabama has theirs, and Georgia has theirs...
In Georgia it's Ringgold...
Here's Jana Barnello with County Superintendent Denia Reese for a preview...
But you have to start "somewhere" regardless of the level of starting...
When you travel up Interstate 75 from Atlanta to Chattanooga, there is one half-mile swath of downed trees at mile marker 297. You can still smell the pine...
Entering Catoosa County, Exit 295 is fine. Exit 300 is fine.
Exit 298 is far from it...
Looking east to west, the Baymont Inn is gone. The track of the tornado follows the overpass at the off-ramp. The Ruby Tuesdays restaurant looks like a bomb dropped on it- something out of the realism of "Saving Private Ryan." And the driving range is now an "olf range" with netting that has fallen down off its wooden stilts. Any elevated, lighted sign that would draw possible patrons- whether it was the Wendy's, the Waffle House, or any of the gas stations along the line just has a shell of itself to see. You have to guess, now, as to what you want to do if you classify as "local traffic."
The irony of the Baymont is, that if you come from north to south, there's a billboard- untouched- that trumpets the virtues of the values of the Inn as a way station... just before Exit 298...
Most people are trying to just get something of a life together now...
And they did that through baseball...
Round One of the triple-a playoffs was against Riverwood. You couldn't find a seat at the team's new home away from home- Heritage High. The Generals opened up their campus to the Tigers- wanting them to do what they needed to work. The kids from Ringgold High won't be back this year...
For anything...
But for one day leading into a weekend, the second that Ringgold gets to try and piece its life back together, the team's high-powered offense got to take out their frustrations of not having schools, homes, and the loss of two of their classmates.
All the signage was moved over from what's left of the baseball diamond to hang from the Heritage fencing. And eight runs in the first two innings of Game One led to a 13-3 and a 10-1 sweep.
But in all the cursive Ringgold blue, you saw relief (albeit temporary) and a sense of purpose. There are t-shirts for all to see that maintain an idea of "United We Stand" and "We Are Ringgold."
They all are... and they all will...
Fixes are long-term goals that need short-term solutions. The idea of one of those transmogrifiers that Calvin and Hobbes had in-house (that, amazingly, looked like a cardboard box) could transport everyone to that end of the work to view an instant success. But we're all now in a different place...
The new normal...
A normal not of our own choosing or device, but one forced upon us by all those whims from a mother of a Mother...
The baseball team gets Columbus next- and that's a tall order by any stretch of the definition. For one day, though, Ringgold was back on top. And you look to take that one day on top and turn it into a series of the same thing...
A successful repetition for completion of the long-term goal...

Schools Reach Out To Tuscaloosa

One thing is assured...
As TBH can attest, Alabamians may wear different colors on Saturdays but when it comes to the other days of the week- and, especially, in times in need- the colors you wear and the schools you support don't matter a whole lot...
Alabama student government chief of staff Nicole Bohannon says six schools have reached out to volunteer: Auburn, Louisiana State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Penn State and South Carolina.

Alabama Baseball player rides out tornado in bathtub
You gotta do what you've gotta do. University of Alabama outfielder Andrew Miller and his roommates only had seconds to react. They had seconds to do something to get out of the way of one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in U.S History.Miller and his pals were in their rental home, about 400 yards off of 15th Street one of the epicenters of Tuscaloosa's damage. They grabbed a mattress and got into a bathtub. None of the four were hurt.

Amidst the hundreds of deaths and massive destruction, there are stories of survivors, people who did whatever they had to do to survive nature's fury.
Perhaps the best line in the story we mention here is at the end when we here about Miller and his teammates going back to 15th Street and helped clean trees off their house and help their neighbors. We wish them and everyone else down there the best.
