TWTW: UTEP Beats New Mexico 38-20, Locksley Still Not Fired...

While the HQ is pleased that the Lobos can lay claim to most of the offensive output of New Mexico's football programs Saturday ((20 of the state's 23 points)), they still gave up 38 to Texas-El Paso and 14th-year quarterback Trevor Vittatoe.

Head coach Mike Locksley is now 1-16 with New Mexico and is still not fired...

Strong Booted From UTEP, Floyd Questions Rise Again

Texas El-Paso senior guard Myron Strong has been kicked off the Miners squad by head coach Tim Floyd. But Strong didn't leave town without calling out Floyd and burning every bridge he could find between El Paso and Memphis, Tennessee.

Strong told KVIA-TV in an e-mail that Floyd "stereotyped him from day one." Strong also said that Floyd even intimated that another guard was brought in and Strong would fall even further down the depth chart- even possibly relieving him of his team duties. Strong also said that he knew Tim Floyd created an artificial charity event to pay off OJ Mayo.

Nice...

On his Facebook page, the HQ thinks anyway... Strong told people early on Thursday:

Its better to know something or experience something for yourself than to take somebody else word. That way u know for sure

Dan Wolken, through his Twitter page, has been keeping up with everything through his work in the Commercial Appeal. Wolken tracked down Tim Floyd who said: Spoke with Floyd, who went right back at Strong, said he was dismissed due to drug policy violation, noted his fourth school in 4 years.

Strong claims he's going to play for Victory University, an NAIA school in Memphis.

TWTW: Houston Gets Boatraced In El Paso 58-41

Donald Buckram ran for a career-high 262 yards and four touchdowns to lead Texas-El Paso to a 58-41 upset of No. 12 Houston.

The Cougars (3-1, 0-1 Conference USA) had earned their first ranking since 1991 and were hoping to become a BCS spoiler after two wins over Big 12 foes. Instead they watched UTEP fans storm the field seconds after the Miners (2-3, 1-0) beat a ranked team for the first time in 12 years.

Houston lost despite a career night from Case Keenum, who threw for 536 yards and five touchdowns.

Buckram had 158 yards and all four of his scores as UTEP pulled away in the second half.

So much for Houston being a bracket buster. "Fun to watch" doesn't necessarily translate into "Run the table."

Here's an interesting bit of live television...
KVIA-TV's Raul Martinez is live for Channel 7's Saturday night sportscast from the Sun Bowl. He's very over-modulated, but he's very excited about his highlights- while the game is still going on in the fourth quarter...

We "think" this is okay since the game had no live television coverage otherwise...


Lost in the whole "Case Keenum had a career night" talk is that to get that 536 yards passing, he had to go 51 of 76...

Don Haskins ((1930-2008))

Legendary college basketball coach Don "The Bear" Haskins ((pictured, thanks KVIA.com)) died Sunday at the age of 78 due to congestive heart failure.

He is best known for taking his Texas-El Paso squad ((then, Texas Western College)) to the NCAA basketball championship and defeating an all-white team from the University of Kentucky in 1966. Haskins started five black players against the Wildcats.

He coached those teams in El Paso for almost 40 years and won seven WAC titles. Haskins was inducted in to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
