NCAA Documents Released, FSU's Response Due July 1
((HT: WCTV))
The NCAA's response to Florida State's appeal was made public on Thursday (6/18).
Florida State's attempt to secure wins in ten different sports was fully denied.
The 21 page document cuts Florida State University no slack and fully upholds all original penalties, hammering down on the seriousness of the cheating scandal.
While the NCAA Committee on Infractions did commend Florida state for going the extra mile to uncover the truth and discover other infractions, the committee did not belief the corrective actions were enough to relieve the university from a vacation of wins.
The document goes on to say, "a vacation of wins is unique in its fairness because it takes away wins from athletes who should not have been competing in the first place."
It also says, the most severe penalties are appropriate when the "academic mission of the university is compromised."
The Committee on Infractions summarizes its response to FSU's appeal by writing the "vacation of records penalty should be upheld."
It's going to be a battle for Coach Bobby Bowden to keep his wins, but this isn't over.
Florida State still has to submit its response.
These documents make it clear however that the NCAA isn't budging so far.
Florida State's response is due July 1st.
The document says the victories were tainted because they were played with ineligible athletes. It goes on to say it would be unfair to take the victories away from innocent athletes who played with their ineligible teammates and not take them away from coach Bowden.
The NCAA says, he has to be placed in the same category as the other innocent parties.
