Vincennes Rivet Loses In Indiana Title Game

((HT: WTHI-TV))

Jamison Coyle has the highlights...

Yes, you saw what you thought you saw in the post-game...
The starting left-fielder was a girl...

Sophomore Emily Montgomery was asked to play on the team by her older brother when the season started. They didn't have enough players...

Mark Dent from the Indianapolis Star picks up the story from there...

"It started as a joke. Last winter, coach Bill Beard would stop Emily Montgomery in the hallway and ask whether she wanted to play. By March, the talks got serious. Beard needed players.

Emily knew this already. Her brother, Cory, had been nagging her for days. Then Mom did the same. "It's your brother's favorite sport," she would say, "and they don't have enough players."

So Emily joined.

The team nearly had to stop after a player got injured in March, leaving them with eight. Nine are needed to play. Two seniors joined so the team could continue, and then the injured player came back, bringing the team to 11."

One of the smallest schools in Indiana made history...even in a loss...
