Gainesville State Attorney Bill Cervone told Florida Today on Monday that Florida football player Janoris Jenkins ((pictured, thanks Alachua County Sheriff's Office)), involved in a weekend fight in the downtown area, should be eligible for a deferral after he was arrested on a two misdemeanor charges.
Jenkins, 20, a freshman All-America defensive back last season, was arrested for affray and resisting arrest without violence. Police arrived after a report of a fight around 2 a.m. Saturday. Reports show Jenkins was fighting with several other people when he is alleged to have slapped one of the other men in the face.
Police, who had ordered the fighting to stop, then used a Taser on him. He still got to his feet and ran from the scene. He was soon arrested nearby. Jenkins told police he thought one of the men was trying to steal a chain on his neck.
Jenkins has no previous arrest history.
