Centenary Heading For Division III
((HT: Shreveport Times/Watson))
The Centenary College board of trustees voted today to drop down from NCAA Division I to NCAA Division III athletics in the next two to three years.
The vote was 31-18 in favor of dropping down, which included 16 proxy votes.
“This is one part of an overall wide-ranging plan which will be implemented by incoming president Dr. David Rowe,” said Ed Crawford, board of trustees acting chairman. “Centenary must and will restructure its overall strategy to achieve financial and academic stability. We on the board look forward to working with president Rowe as he helps rebuild an even more firmly established Centenary College as a leading institution of higher education in the South and in the nation.”
Centenary does not have a conference affiilation yet according to third-generation Centenary board of trustees member Andy Shehee.
"My family and I have longtime been supporters of Centenary and we will continue to support Centenary, but I need to go back to my chicken yard and lick my wounds and contemplate all of this,'' Shehee said.
Former Centenary basketball player Travis Hill, who played with the Gents last season, said he was disappointed in the decision because he was looking forward to coming back to Centenary over the next few years to see friends play.
"Now I don't know if any will be here,'' Hill said. "The vote was shocking. To see these people coming out of the meeting and 90 pecent of them have never been at a basketball game really hurts. If you weren't coming to the games, you don't know what we're about.''
