No Sports for you!

An interesting story out of the Metro Cincinnati area. A Hamilton, Ohio High School athlete was sentenced by a judge to "Stay Away" from all organized Sports after being convicted of shooting a 15 year old in the eye with a BB Gun.

The story from the Cincinnati Enquirer here .

Dwayne "Deejay" Hunter was being recruited by a ton of Divison 1 College Football programs, not any more. Here is what Judge Andrew Nestoff sentenced Hunter to in lieu of probation: no sports, not even intramurals; a $500 fine; 500 hours of community service, which can include his helping youngsters in Special Olympics, pee-wee football or other sports; plus 180 days in the Butler County Jail. With credit for time served, he will be released just before Thanksgiving.

This is kind of an interesting story, more so about life itself and the creative sentencing than "Some" judges are using in lieu of a long prison term. One of things, if you read the story, that the judge was adamant about was "Let's see what kind of person you are without having to rely on Sports".

I have to admit, I kind of like the idea here. Hunter certainly is going to find out that there is more to life than professional or collegiate sports. If he does what is required, he still will have the opportunity at some point to pursue a Sports career, but he is now going to be forced to find out what other things that he might be able to do to be successful in life. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.
