Darren Chiaccia: The Road Back

Sunday was the one year anniversary of a horrifying, near fatal injury at the Red Hills Horse Trials. And Tuesday, for the first time since last March, equestrian rider Darren Chiacchia is back in the Capital City thanking the men and women at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital that kept him alive.

Chiacchia walked the halls of the hospital that was his home for almost two months. It was a reunion that a year ago, no one thought would happen.

Dr. Alberto Fernandez, who helped care for Darren Chiaccia said to him, "We can do everything we possibly can and without that same sort of determination that made you a world class equestrian, the outcomes could have been different."

"From beginning to the time when I was released here, played a huge role in not just my survival, but being able to return to life as I once knew it." said Chiaccia.

Here's part 1 of his story from part of the family: our own Lee Gordon of WCTV-6.
