25 years ago BYU won the national championship. The Cougars seem to making a run to win another. Saturday in Dallas 20th ranked BYU got the job done by defeating 3rd ranked Oklahoma 14-13.
Yes Sam Bradford hurt his shoulder late in the first half and I'm sure that contributed to BYU's win but Max Hall proved he's a pretty good quarterback to. The Oklahoma defense beat the tar out of Hall but when the Cougars needed a play, Hall was there.
In some sense Hall had to be. He was picked up by the ESPN cameras and microphones saying, "We are going to win, we are going to win," while running into the locker room at halftime.
Hall's late 4th quarter touchdown drive will be talk about in Provo and throughout Utah for a long time. OU's defense was getting the best of the Cougars in the 2nd half. Yet Max Hall was cool and competent when his team needed him to pull it off. The 16 play 78 yard drive late in the 4th quarter that resulted in the difference of the game was stuff of legend.
"It wasn't just me, man," Hall told the Salt Lake Tribune. "We pulled it off man. This is going to be one of the greatest wins in BYU history, and I feel very proud to be a part of the team that did it."
While its a big win for BYU its another feather in the cap for the Mountain West Conference. The league keeps taking advantage of playing the big boys and coming through with wins.
"One more positive acknowledgment for our league that can't be overlooked," said BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall.
One more reason why the Mountain West Conference deserves BCS status.
