Griffin was a major contributor to the basketball team last season, logging time in all 30 games as a forward and center. According to the school he had played in a pickup basketball game Monday night along with doing some weight training.

The school obviously was shocked and saddened at the loss. Griffin was a major in Sociology from the Chicago area. The school president, Andrew Westmoreland released this statement: "The Samford community is profoundly saddened by the death of Jim Griffin," said Samford President Andrew Westmoreland. "He was a popular student on campus in addition to being a member of the men's basketball team. It never is easy when any life is lost, but it is more difficult to lose one of such great promise."

Obviously, we at OSG Sports offer thoughts and condolences to the Griffin family and the Samford University community as well.
